The Calling of A Sinner

Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, Follow
Me. And he rose and followed Him.

shall by no means perish forever, and no one shall snatch them
out of My hand.

The tax office was a toll house, where tax was collected for
the Roman government. Levi, also known as Matthew, was one of
the tax collectors, probably one in a high position (Matt.
10:3). The tax collectors were condemned, despised, and
abhorred by the Jews. Most of these tax collectors abused
their office by demanding more than they should by false
accusation. To pay taxes to the Roman government was very
bitter to the Jews. Hence, they were classed with sinners
(Mark 2:16). Even though Matthew was a tax collector, he was
called by the Slave-Savior and later chosen and appointed as
one of the twelve apostles (3:18). What mercy!

The record of the calling of Matthew is very simple. He was a
tax collector, one who was considered a traitor by the Jews
because he helped the Roman imperialists. In the New Testament
these tax collectors were classified with prostitutes.
Nevertheless, such a person as Matthew was called by the
Slave-Savior. The Lord simply said to him, "Follow Me!" We are
told that Matthew rose and followed Him. According to the
record here, it seems that this was the first time the Lord
met Matthew. There must have been some attracting power with
the Lord, either in His word or appearance, that caused
Matthew to follow Him.

To follow the Lord includes believing in Him. No one follows
Him unless he believes in Him. To believe in the Lord is to be
saved (Acts 16:31), and to follow Him is to enter the narrow
gate and walk the constricted way (Matt. 7:13-14).

Just like that�storm over!

How many times have I underestimated the power and majesty of my Creator? How many times have I tried to do something in my own strength only to realize that His touch is really all I needed? How often do I struggle alone while He is waiting for me to allow Him to take over the situation?

Regardless of your struggle, no matter how hard things may seem for you right now, in spite of your perspective that things are impossible, the solution to your problem may be as simple as a �Quiet, be still.� One word from Jesus and it could all be over. One touch of the Master and your troubles could be solved.

Consider this question: What if your biggest problems are really just an easy fix for Him, but you have never trusted Him enough to work His will? Sometimes we underestimate Hi s power and His love. Sometimes He has the solution, but we are too busy trying to find it without Him that we never get to His solution for us. James wrote in the Bible, �You don�t have because you don�t ask��. Could that be your problem today?

What are you facing today that is bigger than you? Is it time for a conversation with the One who holds the answers?

MORNING:

"Thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting."
-- Daniel 5:27

It is well frequently to weigh ourselves in the scale of God's Word.
You will find it a holy exercise to read some psalm of David, and, as
you meditate upon each verse, to ask yourself, "Can I say this? Have I
felt as David felt? Has my heart ever been broken on account of sin, as
his was when he penned his penitential psalms? Has my soul been full of
true confidence in the hour of difficulty as his was when he sang of
God's mercies in the cave of Adullam, or in the holds of Engedi? Do I
take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord?" Then
turn to the life of Christ, and as you read, ask yourselves how far you
are conformed to his likeness. Endeavour to discover whether you have
the meekness, the humility, the lovely spirit which he constantly
inculcated and displayed. Take, then, the epistles, and see whether you
can go with the apostle in what he said of his experience. Have you
ever cried out as he did-"O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver
me from the body of this death?" Have you ever felt his self-abasement?
Have you seemed to yourself the chief of sinners, and less than the
least of all saints? Have you known anything of his devotion? Could you
join with him and say, "For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain"?
If we thus read God's Word as a test of our spiritual condition, we
shall have good reason to stop many a time and say, "Lord, I feel I
have never yet been here, O bring me here! give me true penitence, such
as this I read of. Give me real faith; give me warmer zeal; inflame me
with more fervent love; grant me the grace of meekness; make me more
like Jesus. Let me no longer be 'found wanting,' when weighed in the
balances of the sanctuary, lest I be found wanting in the scales of
judgment." "Judge yourselves that ye be not judged."

EVENING:

"Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling."
-- 2 Timothy 1:9

The apostle uses the perfect tense and says, "Who hath saved us."
Believers in Christ Jesus are saved. They are not looked upon as
persons who are in a hopeful state, and may ultimately be saved, but
they are already saved. Salvation is not a blessing to be enjoyed upon
the dying bed, and to be sung of in a future state above, but a matter
to be obtained, received, promised, and enjoyed now. The Christian is
perfectly saved in God's purpose; God has ordained him unto salvation,
and that purpose is complete. He is saved also as to the price which
has been paid for him: "It is finished" was the cry of the Saviour ere
he died. The believer is also perfectly saved in his covenant head, for
as he fell in Adam, so he lives in Christ. This complete salvation is
accompanied by a holy calling. Those whom the Saviour saved upon the
cross are in due time effectually called by the power of God the Holy
Spirit unto holiness: they leave their sins; they endeavour to be like
Christ; they choose holiness, not out of any compulsion, but from the
stress of a new nature, which leads them to rejoice in holiness just as
naturally as aforetime they delighted in sin. God neither chose them
nor called them because they were holy, but he called them that they
might be holy, and holiness is the beauty produced by his workmanship
in them. The excellencies which we see in a believer are as much the
work of God as the atonement itself. Thus is brought out very sweetly
the fulness of the grace of God. Salvation must be of grace, because
the Lord is the author of it: and what motive but grace could move him
to save the guilty? Salvation must be of grace, because the Lord works
in such a manner that our righteousness is for ever excluded. Such is
the believer's privilege-a present salvation; such is the evidence that
he is called to it-a holy life.

GETTING THERE

"They abode with Him that day." That is about all some of us ever do,
then we wake up to actualities, self-interest arises and the abiding
is passed. There is no condition of life in which we cannot abide in
Jesus.

"Thou art Simon, thou shalt be called Cephas." God writes the new
name on those places only in our lives where He has erased the pride
and self-sufficiency and self-interest. Some of us have the new name
in spots only, like spiritual measles. In sections we look all right.
When we have our best spiritual mood on, you would think we were very
high-toned saints; but don't look at us when we are not in that mood.
The disciple is one who has the new name written all over him;
self-interest and pride and self-sufficiency have been completely
erased.

Pride is the deification of self, and this to-day in some of us is
not of the order of the Pharisee, but of the publican. To say "Oh,
I'm no saint," is acceptable to human pride, but it is unconscious
blasphemy against God. It literally means that you defy God to make
you a saint, "I am much too weak and hopeless, I am outside the reach
of the Atonement." Humility before men may be unconscious blasphemy
before God. Why are you not a saint? It is either that you do not
want to be a saint, or that you do not believe God can make you one.
It would be all right, you say, if God saved you and took you
straight to heaven. That is just what He will do! "We will come unto
him, and make our abode with him." Make no conditions, let Jesus be
everything, and He will take you home with Him not only for a day,
but for ever.

No Middle Ground

"If a person is not with me, then he is against me. The
person that does not work with me is working against me."

KEY THOUGHT:
So often as human beings, we want to do what I call "play in the gray."
Rather than seeing issues as black and white, right and wrong, good and
evil, we often say, "Well, it's not all that cut and dried. It's not
really a black and white issue; it's really more a gray issue." Jesus
does not allow us to "play in the gray" about his identity. If we are
not for him, we are against him. Being lukewarm, undecided,
noncommittal, is simply another way of opposing Jesus. So let's begin
today to daily live with unabashed dedication in our service to the
Lord Jesus Christ!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Loving and Almighty God, I confess that sometimes I do not want to take
a stand on a controversial issue that might get me criticized or
ridiculed. But today and each day that follows, Father, I want to serve
Jesus without compromise. I don't want to hedge on my devotion and
loyalty to him. As I commit myself to his service, please further
empower me by your Spirit with boldness to clearly, yet sensitively,
proclaim my allegiance to Jesus Christ as my Lord. In Jesus' holy name
I pray. Amen.

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" Mark 4:38 NIV

I have been told that the stern is the strongest part of the boat. The Creator of the universe was asleep there. The One who was there when the waters were parted and Moses led the people through on dry ground had His head on a cushion. The One who walked with three guys in the fiery furnace, in all of His current humanity had decided He needed some rest. The disciples apparently lost sight of the fact that, Jesus was not only human, and He was also fully God.

I am reminded that I forget the same thing at times. Have you ever felt like the disciples felt? Have you ever wondered if Jesus cared? Has the thought crossed your mind that Jesus may not even be aware of your current situation? Have you thought, �Jesus, I see my problems, don�t you?� Or maybe you have felt something like, �Jesus, don�t you care?�

Of course, our spiritual piety would never allow us to admit our weakness in this area fully. Could I as a pastor really admit that I doubted His love? Could you? Yet if I am honest, sometimes from my perspective, it appears that Jesus is nowhere to be found and I am left all alone to wallow in my sorrows. Just saying�.

I think the best thing we can possibly do in those situations is to be like the disciples and admit our frailty to God. When we get gut honest with Him about our insufficiencies, perhaps He will be willing to do what only He can do.

He Knows My Name!, by Phil Ware

Mary didn't recognize Him! Can you believe it? After all Jesus had
meant to her and after all she had seen Jesus do, she didn't recognize
the Lord as He stood outside the tomb.

[The angels] asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have
taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have
put him." At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,
but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

He asked her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking
for?"

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried
him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him"

(John 20:13-15 TNIV).

This is a story of despair -- a story about losing everything that
matters in life. Mary has had life crushed out of her by the torturous
death of Jesus. She is blinded by her grief and the job at hand. She
has no expectation of anything good coming out of this senseless and
inexplicable tragedy. Mary does not recognize Jesus even though he is
only a few feet from her.

Jesus said to her, "Mary."

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which
means "Teacher")

(John 20:16).

When the Lord calls her by name, she recognizes Jesus' voice ... she
recognizes that it is Jesus! Just as the Lord promised, when those who
follow Him hear His voice, they recognize Him and follow Him (John
10:1-4).

About this point in our thinking, the not-so-friendly Yabbots interrupt
our faith-thinking and replace it with earthbound "reality" thinking.
"Yeah, but Jesus doesn't speak to us today." "Yeah, but we can't expect
that to happen to us today."

Underneath the "reality" thinking, this earthbound pessimism, is a
nagging fear: Jesus doesn't really know about me, He doesn't really
care about me personally, and He doesn't involve himself in matters as
small as me. It's a way of saying, "I really don't matter that much at
a personal level to the Lord."

Of course, those of us who are religious, have more "righteous"
sounding ways of explaining away why Jesus doesn't talk to us. "I don't
believe in modern revelation!"

But listen to what we sing!

He knows my name.
He knows my every thought.
He sees each tear that falls.
And He hears me when I call (by Tommy Walker).

He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own ... (by C. Austin Miles).

Also take note of what we see Jesus do after the resurrection! He
speaks personally to Mary, calling her by name. He speaks and shows the
scars of crucifixion to the disciples. He speaks personally to Thomas
to help him believe that the resurrection is true, once again showing
the scars on His hands, feet, and side. He shares a very personal and
intimate meal with two followers from Emmaus.

Then notice what we have heard from Scripture. "My sheep listen to my
voice; I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27). Listen to the
psalmist:

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast (Psalm 139:8-10).

We are not cogs in some cosmic clock that God wound up and left to us
to play out our roles as time winds down. God knows us from conception
(Psalm 139:13-16). God is involved in working the pieces of our life
out to some good purpose (Romans 8:28-29). Our lives are the personal
work of God himself (Philippians 1:6; Philippians 4:13).

So what creates our doubt? What makes Jesus hard for us to recognize in
our daily lives?

Could it be that we are so caught up with our own wounds and grief, our
work and busy lives that we don't expect to hear anything? Have we
forgotten to listen?

The following ideas and questions are intended to help you further
study this subject and is also for your personal reflection, your use
in a small group or house church, or a discussion with friends. I would

So if God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -- are involved in our lives,
and if the Lord speaks to us, then how does He do it and how can we can
be sure it is really God and not some selfish desire or some worldly
wisdom or some evil spirit trying to deceive us?

Ah! Two good questions. I'll give you a response, but leave it to you
to do some digging in Scripture to deepen your understanding and to
discover God's truth for yourself. (Try these ideas out and work
through the Scripture references!)

Do what Jesus says to do!

How does Jesus speak to us today?

* While we sleep! (The Bible talks about God ministering to us while
we sleep. I encourage you to read the article, While We Sleep.)

* During our times with our church family! We forget that church is
more than filling pews and following a worship order. Jesus is
present (Matthew 18:20) and through the power of the Holy Spirit,
our worship becomes more than a sharing of words (1 Corinthians 5:4).
Our songs are Spirit-filled messages where we speak to each other (Colossians
3:16; Ephesians 5:17-19). Those who speak are to do so as speaking
the very words of God (1 Peter 4:11). So what is preached, what is
said to encourage us by friends, the loving confrontations we help
each other face in Bible study, and the messages we sing to each
other are one way Jesus speaks truth and hope into our hearts!

* During our everyday life experiences. God is at work in us,
speaking to us when we read His word, when we hear repeated
thoughts from multiple sources, and through the well-timed note,
phone call, or card we receive from a friend (Philippians 2:13;
Romans 8:28).

What are some other ways you think the Lord may have spoken truth into
your life?

But how can we know it is really from the Lord and not from some other
source? Aren't we taught to "test the spirits" to see if what is being
said is true? (1 John 4:1-6)

Here are some ways to test to see if what we hear the Lord
communicating is really from Him:

Know Jesus. Get into the Jesus story and recognize what has the ring of
truth from knowing what the Lord said and how He lived (John 10:1-4;
John 10:27; read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

Pray for the Holy Spirit's help in knowing what is truth and knowing
Jesus' will. The Holy Spirit is given to us to help us know the truth
from error and to recognize what is from God and from some other source
(1 John 2:20-27; 1 John 3:23-24; 1 John 4:1-6; John 14:16-18; John
14:26; John 15:26; John 16:12-15).

Do what Jesus says to do. Not only is Jesus' truth self-validating when
it is lived by His disciples (John 8:31-32), but Jesus promises to
reveal Himself to us and come make His home with each of us (John
14:19-23).

What are other ways that you believe we can discern what is truly from
Jesus and what is from some other source?

There is no light in the planet but that which proceedeth from the sun;
and there is no true love to Jesus in the heart but that which cometh
from the Lord Jesus himself. From this overflowing fountain of the
infinite love of God, all our love to God must spring. This must ever
be a great and certain truth, that we love him for no other reason than
because he first loved us. Our love to him is the fair offspring of his
love to us. Cold admiration, when studying the works of God, anyone may
have, but the warmth of love can only be kindled in the heart by God's
Spirit. How great the wonder that such as we should ever have been
brought to love Jesus at all! How marvellous that when we had rebelled
against him, he should, by a display of such amazing love, seek to draw
us back. No! never should we have had a grain of love towards God
unless it had been sown in us by the sweet seed of his love to us.
Love, then, has for its parent the love of God shed abroad in the
heart: but after it is thus divinely born, it must be divinely
nourished. Love is an exotic; it is not a plant which will flourish
naturally in human soil, it must be watered from above. Love to Jesus
is a flower of a delicate nature, and if it received no nourishment but
that which could be drawn from the rock of our hearts it would soon
wither. As love comes from heaven, so it must feed on heavenly bread.
It cannot exist in the wilderness unless it be fed by manna from on
high. Love must feed on love. The very soul and life of our love to God
is his love to us.

I love thee, Lord; but all the love is thine,
For by thy love I live.
I am as nothing, and rejoice to be
Emptied, and lost, and swallowed up in thee."

EVENING:

"There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the
sword, and the battle."

Our Redeemer's glorious cry of "It is finished," was the death-knell of
all the adversaries of his people, the breaking of "the arrows of the
bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle." Behold the hero of
Golgotha using his cross as an anvil, and his woes as a hammer, dashing
to shivers bundle after bundle of our sins, those poisoned "arrows of
the bow;" trampling on every indictment, and destroying every
accusation. What glorious blows the mighty Breaker gives with a hammer
far more ponderous than the fabled weapon of Thor! How the diabolical
darts fly to fragments, and the infernal bucklers are broken like
potters' vessels! Behold, he draws from its sheath of hellish
workmanship the dread sword of Satanic power! He snaps it across his
knee, as a man breaks the dry wood of a fagot, and casts it into the
fire. Beloved, no sin of a believer can now be an arrow mortally to
wound him, no condemnation can now be a sword to kill him, for the
punishment of our sin was borne by Christ, a full atonement was made
for all our iniquities by our blessed Substitute and Surety. Who now
accuseth? Who now condemneth? Christ hath died, yea rather, hath risen
again. Jesus has emptied the quivers of hell, has quenched every fiery
dart, and broken off the head of every arrow of wrath; the ground is
strewn with the splinters and relics of the weapons of hell's warfare,
which are only visible to us to remind us of our former danger, and of
our great deliverance. Sin hath no more dominion over us. Jesus has
made an end of it, and put it away for ever. O thou enemy, destructions
are come to a perpetual end. Talk ye of all the wondrous works of the
Lord, ye who make mention of his name, keep not silence, neither by
day, nor when the sun goeth to his rest. Bless the Lord, O my soul.

GETTING THERE

Come unto Me.

Do I want to get there? I can now. The questions that matter in life
are remarkably few, and they are all answered by the words - "Come
unto Me." Not - Do this, or don't do that; but - "Come unto Me." If I
will come to Jesus my actual life will be brought into accordance
with my real desires; I will actually cease from sin, and actually
find the song of the Lord begin.

Have you ever come to Jesus? Watch the stubbornness of your heart,
you will do anything rather than the one simple childlike thing -
"Come unto Me." If you want the actual experience of ceasing from
sin, you must come to Jesus.

Jesus Christ makes Himself the touchstone. Watch how He used the word
"Come." At the most unexpected moments there is the whisper of the
Lord - "Come unto Me," and you are drawn immediately. Personal
contact with Jesus alters everything. Be stupid enough to come and
commit yourself to what He says. The attitude of coming is that the
will resolutely lets go of everything and deliberately commits all to
Him.

". . . and I will give you rest," i.e., I will stay you. Not - I will
put you to bed and hold your hand and sing you to sleep; but - I will
get you out of bed, out of the languor and exhaustion, out of the
state of being half dead while you are alive; I will imbue you with
the spirit of life, and you will be stayed by the perfection of vital
activity. We get pathetic and talk about "suffering the will of the
Lord!" Where is the majestic vitality and might of the Son of God
about that?

Binding the Strong Man

"You say that I use the power of Beelzebul to force out
demons. If that is true, then what power do your people use
when they force out demons? So your own people will prove
that you are wrong. But I use the power of God's Spirit to
force out demons. This shows that the kingdom of God has come
to you. If a person wants to enter a strong man's house and
steal his things, first the person must tie the strong man.
Then the person can steal the things from the strong man's
house."

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus' power over demons, disease, and death are reminders that he
comes in the power of the Kingdom. His ministry is the power of the
Kingdom dawning in people's lives and a foretaste of Jesus' eternal
rule as Lord and Savior. He has entered the strong man's house and tied
up the strong man. He has plundered the strong man and liberated those
the strong man had bound and headed for Hell. His power is real and
righteous. His power is unleashed to liberate us. It is now time for us
to proclaim him Lord, not just Lord of our lives, but Lord of all! To
him goes all majesty, glory, honor, and power. To him belongs the
victory forever. To him we bow our knees and surrender our hearts.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy God, you alone are God. Through your Son you have liberated me
from law, sin, death, and Satan. I place my life and my future in your
hands. I praise you for your grace and power. I praise you for your
love and mercy. I praise you for your sacrifice and strength. I praise
you for Jesus Christ, my Lord and Lord of all. In his name, the Lord
Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

THOUGHT:
Jeremiah was telling God's people that 70 years after the
devastation, God would deliver and restore them. Despite the fact
that they had repeatedly abandoned God, he would not abandon them
or his promises to them. He would be faithful. In fact, God was
planning and preparing a bright future for them. This promise also
reminds us that no matter how deep our own personal gloom may seem,
God does have plans for us. He will keep his promises to us. He
will deliver and bless us. We can have a vibrant hope and a bright
future because of his faithfulness and our trust in his Son, Jesus,
who delivers us from every foe.

PRAYER:
Give me faith, O Lord, during the times I'm weary, discouraged,
and beaten down. Inspire me to trust in your great promises. Please
give me courage, O Lord, when my faith wavers. Help me obey your
word no matter how challenging it may seem or how discouraged I
feel. Thank you for giving me a bright future in Jesus. Please help
me live more consciously aware of this great gift. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

Manifesting His Deity in Humanity

Phil 2:6 Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider
being equal with God a treasure to be grasped, 7 But
emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, becoming in the
likeness of men;
Mark 2:10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority to forgive sins on Earth--he said to the paralytic,
11 To you I say, Rise, take up your mat and go to your
house.

The Slave-Savior was the very God incarnated, not regarding
equality with God a thing to be grasped. He was outwardly in
the likeness and fashion of man, even in the form of a slave,
but inwardly, He was God (Phil. 2:6-7). He was the Slave-
Savior and the God-Savior as well. Hence, He had not only the
ability to save the sinners, but also the authority to
forgive their sins. In this incident He forgave people's sins
as God, but asserted that He was the Son of Man. This
indicates that He was the true God and a real Man, possessing
deity and humanity. In Him men could see both His divine
attribute and human virtue.

When the Lord referred to the paralytic as a child [Mark
2:5], the Lord conducted Himself in a very human manner. The
Lord addressed him in an intimate way, in a way full of human
kindness. But when the Lord told the paralytic to rise, take
up his bed, and go home, He manifested His deity. Therefore,
the Lord's deity was manifested in His humanity. His humanity
was full of virtue, and His deity was full of authority. The
Lord's glory seen here was the expression of His authority.
The Lord's word to the sick man to rise, pick up his bed, and
go home was not a word of teaching; it was a word of
authority. This word was confirmed by the fact that the
paralytic then received the ability, the energy to rise, pick
up his bed, and walk. All those gathered there saw the Lord's
authority, glory, and honor. Therefore, in this case we see
the Lord's humanity displayed in its virtue and perfection
and His deity manifested in its glory and honor.

A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Mark 4:37 NIV

Is that not the way normal life happens? One day you can be doing everything you know to do right, smooth sailing seems to be the forecast of the day, and then out of nowhere comes a furious squall. Has that ever happened to you? On days like this in my life it always seems that one problem never gets lonely, because trouble seems to follow trouble. When one thing goes wrong there will most often be other troubles come as well.

My advice is not to be surprised when troubles come. They are a part of everyday living in a fallen world, even for the most dedicated believers. In fact, the strongest people of faith I know are those who have experienced tremendous heartache and pain, which has shaped who they are today. From very personal experience I can say that I would not be half the leader, Christian, pastor, father, husband or friend that I am withou t the times of excruciating torment I have experienced in life. (If you want more of my story read previous posts on my BLOG, but there are some stories of heartache too personal to share. You have your stories too.)

The question for me at this stage of my life is not why the storms come, but how am I going to allow God to use them to make me into who He wants me to be? Are you asking that question?

When Life Tumbles In, by Tim Archer

Dr. Arthur John Gossip was a minister who had preached many sermons,
but none like this one. The day before, his wife had collapsed and died
suddenly. Now he stood in the pulpit of the Beechgrove Church in
Aberdeen, Scotland, speaking on the subject "But When Life Tumbles In,
What Then?" In the midst of his pain, he spoke words of hope to his
congregation.

In reflecting on his loss Gossip said, "I do not understand this life
of ours. But still less can I comprehend how people in trouble and loss
and bereavement can fling away peevishly from the Christian faith. In
God's name, fling to what? Have we not lost enough without losing that
too?" Later he explained, "You people," says Gossip, "in the sunshine
may believe the faith, but we in the shadow must believe it. We have
nothing else."

It's never easy for one who stands in the sunshine, as Gossip put it,
to speak to those in the shadow. Any words that are spoken ring hollow
and empty. If you are walking in the shadow of loss or illness or
financial strain, you may find it hard to listen to those who would
speak to you of hope. You need to hear from those who know life's dark
side. One place to do that is HopeforLife.org. On that website, you
will find the stories of people like Arthur John Gossip who found
themselves in the shadow but now walk in the sunshine. People who faced
life's most extreme moments and came out with faith in God.

We in the shadow MUST believe the faith

Gossip ended his sermon with these words:

I don't think you need to be afraid of life. Our hearts are very
frail, and there are places where the road is very steep and very
lonely, but we have a wonderful God. And, as Paul puts it, "What
can separate us from his love? Not death," he writes immediately.
No, not death, for standing in the roaring of the Jordan, cold with
its dreadful chill and very conscious of its terror, of its
rushing, I, too, like Hopeful in Pilgrim's Progress, can call back
to you who one day in your turn will have to cross it, "Be of good
cheer, my brother, for I feel the bottom and it is sound."

MORNING:

"We live unto the Lord."
-- Romans 14:8

If God had willed it, each of us might have entered heaven at the
moment of conversion. It was not absolutely necessary for our
preparation for immortality that we should tarry here. It is possible
for a man to be taken to heaven, and to be found meet to be a partaker
of the inheritance of the saints in light, though he has but just
believed in Jesus. It is true that our sanctification is a long and
continued process, and we shall not be perfected till we lay aside our
bodies and enter within the veil; but nevertheless, had the Lord so
willed it, he might have changed us from imperfection to perfection,
and have taken us to heaven at once. Why then are we here? Would God
keep his children out of paradise a single moment longer than was
necessary? Why is the army of the living God still on the battle-field
when one charge might give them the victory? Why are his children still
wandering hither and thither through a maze, when a solitary word from
his lips would bring them into the centre of their hopes in heaven? The
answer is-they are here that they may "live unto the Lord," and may
bring others to know his love. We remain on earth as sowers to scatter
good seed; as ploughmen to break up the fallow ground; as heralds
publishing salvation. We are here as the "salt of the earth," to be a
blessing to the world. We are here to glorify Christ in our daily life.
We are here as workers for him, and as "workers together with him." Let
us see that our life answereth its end. Let us live earnest, useful,
holy lives, to "the praise of the glory of his grace." Meanwhile we
long to be with him, and daily sing-

"My heart is with him on his throne,
And ill can brook delay;
Each moment listening for the voice,
'Rise up, and come away.'"

EVENING:

"They are they which testify of me."

Jesus Christ is the Alpha and Omega of the Bible. He is the constant
theme of its sacred pages; from first to last they testify of him. At
the creation we at once discern him as one of the sacred Trinity; we
catch a glimpse of him in the promise of the woman's seed; we see him
typified in the ark of Noah; we walk with Abraham, as he sees Messiah's
day; we dwell in the tents of Isaac and Jacob, feeding upon the
gracious promise; we hear the venerable Israel talking of Shiloh; and
in the numerous types of the law, we find the Redeemer abundantly
foreshadowed. Prophets and kings, priests and preachers, all look one
way-they all stand as the cherubs did over the ark, desiring to look
within, and to read the mystery of God's great propitiation. Still more
manifestly in the New Testament we find our Lord the one pervading
subject. It is not an ingot here and there, or dust of gold thinly
scattered, but here you stand upon a solid floor of gold; for the whole
substance of the New Testament is Jesus crucified, and even its closing
sentence is bejewelled with the Redeemer's name. We should always read
Scripture in this light; we should consider the word to be as a mirror
into which Christ looks down from heaven; and then we, looking into it,
see his face reflected as in a glass-darkly, it is true, but still in
such a way as to be a blessed preparation for seeing him as we shall
see him face to face. This volume contains Jesus Christ's letters to
us, perfumed by his love. These pages are the garments of our King, and
they all smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia. Scripture is the royal
chariot in which Jesus rides, and it is paved with love for the
daughters of Jerusalem. The Scriptures are the swaddling bands of the
holy child Jesus; unroll them and you find your Saviour. The
quintessence of the word of God is Christ.

THE NEXT BEST THING TO DO

"Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss." If you ask for
things from life instead of from God, you ask amiss, i.e., you ask
from a desire for self-realization. The more you realize yourself the
less will you seek God. "Seek, and ye shall find." Get to work,
narrow your interests to this one. Have you ever sought God with your
whole heart, or have you only given a languid cry to Him after a
twinge of moral neuralgia? Seek, concentrate, and you will find.

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters." Are you
thirsty, or smugly indifferent - so satisfied with your experience
that you want nothing more of God? Experience is a gateway, not an
end. Beware of building your faith on experience, the metallic note
will come in at once, the censorious note. You can never give another
person that which you have found, but you can make him homesick for
what you have.

"Knock, and it shall be opened unto you." "Draw nigh to God." Knock -
the door is closed, and you suffer from palpitation as you knock.
"Cleanse your hands" - knock a bit louder, you begin to find you are
dirty. "Purify your heart" - this is more personal still, you are
desperately in earnest now - you will do anything. "Be afflicted" -
have you ever been afflicted before God at the state of your inner
life? There is no strand of self-pity left, but a heartbreaking
affliction of amazement to find you are the kind of person that you
are. "Humble yourself" - it is a humbling business to knock at God's
door - you have to knock with the crucified thief. "To him that
knocketh, it shall be opened."

An Undivided Heart

The Pharisees heard the people saying this. The Pharisees
said, "This man uses the power of Beelzebul (the devil) to
force demons out of people. Beelzebul is the ruler of
demons." Jesus knew the things that the Pharisees were
thinking. So Jesus said to them, "Every kingdom that is
fighting against itself will be destroyed. And every city
that is divided cannot continue. And every family that is
divided cannot succeed. So if Satan (the devil) forces out
his own demons, then Satan is divided. And his kingdom will
not be able to continue."

KEY THOUGHT:
Incredibly, we can assign good deeds to bad motives or evil intent when
those good deeds are done by those we don't like or hold as our
enemies. Jesus faced this same problem. But Jesus reminds us that Satan
and his forces already know what most of us intuitively realize when we
think about it: you don't advance your own cause by causing division
and rivalries. Satan also knows that if he can divide us, he can more
easily defeat us. Jesus' point, however, is that even united, with all
the evil one's forces intact, he could defeat Satan because he was
stronger than Satan. Jesus went into Satan's stronghold and defeated
him. With his help, we can, too!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and Almighty God, I believe that in Jesus you showed your power
over the evil one. Please come with your power and might and completely
eliminate his influence over me by sending Jesus to bring us home to
you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

THOUGHT:
This is God's promise to his people after their Messiah comes
with healing and power to bless them with the Lord's favor. In many
ways, this is our promise as Christians. We do rejoice greatly
because God has delivered us from law, sin, and death through the
coming of our Savior and Lord. Because of Jesus' sacrifice, as
God's children we are clothed with Christ (Gal. 3:26-27) and given
garments of salvation and robes of his righteousness.

PRAYER:
Thank you, dear Father, for making me righteous by Jesus'
sacrifice. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for paying the price for my sins
to give me life. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for cleansing me from my
sin and empowering me to live for God. May I, dear God, live in
such a way that those around me know that you have made me whole
and holy. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mark 2:10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority to forgive sins on Earth--he said to the paralytic,
11 To you I say, Rise, take up your mat and go to your house.
12 And he rose and immediately took up the mat and went out
before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified
God, saying, We have never seen anything like this!

These verses indicate that in order to show that He had
authority to forgive sins, the Lord said to the paralytic,
"Rise, pick up your bed and go to your house." This was the
healing of the paralytic. The Lord's salvation not only
forgives our sins, but also makes us "rise and walk." It is
not rise and walk first, and then be forgiven of our sins;
that would be by works. Instead, it is to be forgiven of our
sins first, and then to rise and walk; this is by grace.

Here [v. 12] we have the fulfillment of the Slave-Savior's
word, "Rise, pick up your bed." To say, "Your sins are
forgiven," was easier than to say, "Rise, pick up your bed and
walk." Since the latter was fulfilled, the former, the easier
one, was surely also fulfilled. This is strong evidence that
the Slave-Savior has authority to forgive sins on earth.

The paralytic rose, picked up his bed, and went out before
all. The Lord enabled the paralytic not only to walk, but also
to pick up his bed and walk. Formerly the bed bore him; now he
bears it. This is the power of the Lord's salvation. Moreover,
this paralytic was brought to the Lord by others, but he went
home by himself. This indicates that it is not that the sinner
can come to the Lord, but that the sinner can go forth from
the Lord by the Lord's salvation.

Well at least the disciples went, that�s better than I have done at times. If you are following this series then you know that there have been times in my life where I followed Jesus closely and other times where I did not and, therefore, missed out on what God was trying to do in my life. I am trying hard today to always follow as He leads.

I love the phrase in this verse, however, that says they took Jesus �just as he was�. While I am certain some theologian can impart wisdom to me about exactly what this means, it speaks volumes to me with what I do know of Scripture and my life experience.

Too many times we try to take Jesus, as we want Jesus to be, not as He intends for us to be. We like Jesus to do things on our terms, not His terms. We try to put our stamp on Jesus rather than allow His stamp on us. We try to fit Jesus in our box rather than conform our lives to Christ.

It does not take a very bright person to figure out they would be better off with Jesus� way than their own. I have often said that if you get better at something than Jesus is I�ll follow you. Even an unbeliever should know that Jesus� way is best.

That leads me to ask an important question: Are you following your way or Christ�s way? If God should choose to alter your life agenda would that meet your approval? Can you emphatically say yes to those questions in every area of your life? (I must confess I am not completely there yet�.but I am a work in progress.)

What the Dying Reveal to Us about the Trinity, by Scott Owings

Stillness is what creates Love
Movement is what creates Life

It's a great mystery and grace that no matter where we are in our
journey, no matter what we've done (good or bad), God calls us to
movement. And yet, sometimes we feel stuck: unable to move, afraid to
move, too weary to make a move towards God or with God into the world.

A year or so ago, after a long season of "stuckness," I sensed a nudge
or prod to move on from church ministry to be a chaplain with hospice.
It hasn't been an easy move and yet God has been teaching me a great
deal from the dying: not only about myself but about others and God.

The dying have much to show us, and one of those lessons has been
surprisingly about the Trinity. I don't know about you, but Trinity for
me used to mean "two dudes and a bird." (This phrase is in no way meant
to convey irreverence or disrespect for the Trinity, but to indicate
how shallow our human understanding of something so divine truly is.)
How helpful is that?

As I got a little older, I heard that the Trinity is one substance with
three forms -- for example in the physical world: ice, water, and
steam. When I went to grad school, I learned a few lofty, conceptual
theories about the Trinity. None of that has been all that practical or
life-changing. Trinity is not static or conceptual. Trinity is not an
"it." To reduce the Trinity to a propositional statement leads to a
lifeless body.

It has been from the dying, and several patients in particular, that
I've begun to glimpse a new angle on what I like to call "trinitarian
movement." And this Trinitarian movement is personal and missional.

After all, Scripture teaches the Father sent the Son; the Son sent the
Spirit; the Spirit sends the church into the world ... and eventually
sends us back to the Father. In a nutshell, this whole notion of "being
sent" is the guiding principle of the gospel of John (used some 30x)
and I believe an important, and often overlooked, dynamic of the
Trinity.

This is where the dying can help us. Of course, the dying don't move
like you or me. They aren't full of activity. They aren't busy,
consumed by self-importance or worried about work or school. Rather,
because of sickness and disease, the dying show (rather than tell) how
one can be still, yet still moving. The dying are about to make the
biggest move of their life: moving from this body through the "Door to
the Great Unknown." And behind that Door is a vastness, a Love, which
is beyond what we can ask or imagine.

"We don't have to take the lead but we do have to move!"

As one is still, preparing to move through the great Door, from God and
to God, I've found the dying have much to show about life -- how to
live and move more fully, more contemplatively, in the here and now.

* Take Fran, an Alzheimer's patient who isn't given to many words.
While in the hospital and on the verge of dying, I went into her
room, aware that she was barely with us. I stayed a few minutes,
and even though she couldn't say a word (and seemed to be asleep),
I decided to pray before leaving. At the Amen, she did something
I'd never seen her do over the past 8 months. She made the movement
of the Cross -- a blessing of the Holy Trinity. A deep symbol,
beyond words, that Father, Son, and Spirit are always present.

* And then there was Bill, a poor man from the country. A person for
whom I developed a deep fondness. On the day before his death, the
family and Bill were anxious, heavy with dread, and seemingly
unable to move. Before leaving, I asked the family to get up and
gather around for prayer. I don't understand why, but there was
something about that movement that unlocked their emotions. They
told stories and laughed and prayed and blessed. The laughter was
best of all, providing healing for the patient and family (and for
me).

* One of my favorite mystic writers, Meister Eckhart said it this way
about the Trinitarian movement of laughter: "When the Father laughs
at the Son and the Son laughs back at the Father, that laughter
gives pleasure, that pleasure gives joy, that joy gives love, and
that love is the Holy Spirit."

* Finally, I'd like to mention Gayle, a middle-aged woman suffering
from painful, pancreatic cancer who showed me a move I will never
forget. In her final moments, the family asked that I pray. As I
did so, she surprisingly leaned towards me, like a flower that
wilts at the end of the day. A single tear from her eye dropped,
and she breathed her last. It was the most sacred, still movement
I've ever experienced. In her dying move, I experienced a most
powerful sermon, one that reminded me of Jesus' words: "[C]onsider
the lilies ... for not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed
like one of these."

When we are brought to a place of stillness (and often it takes
failure, or disease, but prayer and silence can do it as well), we are
able to see and hear the movement, or dance, of the Trinity. As Thomas
Merton wrote, "God invites us to a dance ... we don't have to take the
lead but we do have to move, step by step."

My prayer and hope is that we will accept the Trinity's invitation to
move with stillness. To help with that, I encourage hanging out with
someone who is elderly or on the verge of dying. Visit a nursing-home,
take a grandparent to lunch, volunteer with hospice. If that's not
possible or your cup of tea (or even if it is), maybe you could
practice the three unconventional disciplines or movements I've
mentioned: making the sign of the cross as a blessing to the Trinity,
telling stories and laughing with those you love, and silently
observing and contemplating the movement and beauty of a flower or a
child of God in the waning moments of life.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
The love of God,
And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you (2 Corinthians
13:13).

MORNING:

"The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad."
-- Psalms 126:3

Some Christians are sadly prone to look on the dark side of everything,
and to dwell more upon what they have gone through than upon what God
has done for them. Ask for their impression of the Christian life, and
they will describe their continual conflicts, their deep afflictions,
their sad adversities, and the sinfulness of their hearts, yet with
scarcely any allusion to the mercy and help which God has vouchsafed
them. But a Christian whose soul is in a healthy state, will come
forward joyously, and say, "I will speak, not about myself, but to the
honour of my God. He hath brought me up out of an horrible pit, and out
of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my
goings: and he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our
God. The Lord hath done great things for me, whereof I am glad." Such
an abstract of experience as this is the very best that any child of
God can present. It is true that we endure trials, but it is just as
true that we are delivered out of them. It is true that we have our
corruptions, and mournfully do we know this, but it is quite as true
that we have an all-sufficient Saviour, who overcomes these
corruptions, and delivers us from their dominion. In looking back, it
would be wrong to deny that we have been in the Slough of Despond, and
have crept along the Valley of Humiliation, but it would be equally
wicked to forget that we have been through them safely and profitably;
we have not remained in them, thanks to our Almighty Helper and Leader,
who has brought us "out into a wealthy place." The deeper our troubles,
the louder our thanks to God, who has led us through all, and preserved
us until now. Our griefs cannot mar the melody of our praise, we reckon
them to be the bass part of our life's song, "He hath done great things
for us, whereof we are glad."

EVENING:

"Search the Scriptures."
-- John 5:39

The Greek word here rendered search signifies a strict, close,
diligent, curious search, such as men make when they are seeking gold,
or hunters when they are in earnest after game. We must not rest
content with having given a superficial reading to a chapter or two,
but with the candle of the Spirit we must deliberately seek out the
hidden meaning of the word. Holy Scripture requires searching-much of
it can only be learned by careful study. There is milk for babes, but
also meat for strong men. The rabbis wisely say that a mountain of
matter hangs upon every word, yea, upon every title of Scripture.
Tertullian exclaims, "I adore the fulness of the Scriptures." No man
who merely skims the book of God can profit thereby; we must dig and
mine until we obtain the hid treasure. The door of the word only opens
to the key of diligence. The Scriptures claim searching. They are the
writings of God, bearing the divine stamp and imprimatur- who shall
dare to treat them with levity? He who despises them despises the God
who wrote them. God forbid that any of us should leave our Bibles to
become swift witnesses against us in the great day of account. The word
of God will repay searching. God does not bid us sift a mountain of
chaff with here and there a grain of wheat in it, but the Bible is
winnowed corn-we have but to open the granary door and find it.
Scripture grows upon the student. It is full of surprises. Under the
teaching of the Holy Spirit, to the searching eye it glows with
splendour of revelation, like a vast temple paved with wrought gold,
and roofed with rubies, emeralds, and all manner of gems. No
merchandise like the merchandise of Scripture truth. Lastly, the
Scriptures reveal Jesus: "They are they which testify of me." No more
powerful motive can be urged upon Bible readers than this: he who finds
Jesus finds life, heaven, all things. Happy he who, searching his
Bible, discovers his Saviour.

THE NEXT BEST THING TO DO

For every one that asketh receiveth.

There is nothing more difficult than to ask. We will long and desire
and crave and suffer, but not until we are at the extreme limit will
we ask. A sense of unreality makes us ask. Have you ever asked out of
the depths of moral poverty? "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask
of God...but be sure that you do lack wisdom. You cannot bring
yourself up against Reality when you like. The next best thing to do
if you are not spiritually real, is to ask God for the Holy Spirit on
the word of Jesus Christ (see Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit is the One
Who makes real in you all that Jesus did for you.

"For every one that asketh receiveth." This does not mean you will
not get if you do not ask (cf. Matt. 5:45), but until you get to the
point of asking you won't receive from God. To receive means you have
come into the relationship of a child of God, and now you perceive
with intelligent and moral appreciation and spiritual understanding
that these things come from God.

"If any of you lack wisdom . . ." If you realize you are lacking, it
is because you have come in contact with spiritual reality; do not
put your reasonable blinkers on again. People say - Preach us the
simple gospel: don't tell us we have to be holy, because that
produces a sense of abject poverty, and it is not nice to feel
abjectly poor. "Ask" means beg. Some people are poor enough to be
interested in their poverty, and some of us are like that
spiritually. We will never receive if we ask with an end in view; if
we ask, not out of our poverty but out of our lust. A pauper does not
ask from any other reason than the abject panging condition of his
poverty, he is not ashamed to beg. - Blessed are the paupers in
spirit.

Thank you that such people act in ways that are above and beyond
blame. They love not only what is good in your sight but also what
is honorable in the sight of men.

Thank you for making these people modern partners with your
ancient apostles, partners and fellow-workers in your service, the
messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.

In the name of Jesus I thank you for the transforming power you

Like a Child

Then some people brought a man to Jesus. This man was blind
and could not talk, because he had a demon inside him. Jesus
healed the man, and the man could talk and see. All the
people were amazed. The people said, "Maybe this man (Jesus)
is the Son of David {that God promised to send to us}!"

KEY THOUGHT:
Isn't it amazing how the common everyday folks were so much better at
recognizing Jesus than all the religious leaders? What's going on here?
Of course we know: it's old human pride and selfishness rearing their
ugly heads. Those too smart, too good, and too religious to appreciate
Jesus totally missed his coming. But those who were simple, who yearned
for God, could find Jesus in almost any situation. That's what faith is
all about -- giving up our pretensions and coming to meet Jesus
honestly to see that his work is still true today!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy God, please remove my blinders and arrogance and help me see Jesus
as he truly is, my Savior and your Son! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

THOUGHT:
Confessing our sins means that we view our sin the same way that
God does -- the same revulsion and disdain for them. This kind of
confession opens our hearts to the flood of heaven's grace (see
Psalm 51). God shares with us the sweet liberation from sin that
Jesus purchased at Calvary; and our sins are not only forgiven, but
we are purified. We are no longer sinners and the stain of that sin
is removed as well. We are clean, perfect, and without spot because
of God's purifying grace (Col. 1:21-22). Now let's live in a way
that is reflective of this incredible gift!

PRAYER:
Father, I do confess to you my sins! Please forgive me for ....
(Please verbalize to God your own sins specifically in your
prayer.) Thank you for letting me be honest with you and share with
you my frustration and my sorrow for them. Please liberate me from
their power in my life and give me the confidence that you have not
only forgiven them, but that you have made me pure and holy. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Jesus -- The Slave Who Is God

Mark 2:6 But some of the scribes were sitting there and
reasoning in their hearts, 7 Why is this man speaking this
way? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins except One, God?
8 And immediately Jesus, knowing fully in His spirit that
they were reasoning this way within themselves, said to them,
Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?

Scribes and Pharisees, as the proponents of the old and dead
religion, were motivated and used by Satan, the enemy of God,
to oppose, resist, and frustrate the gospel service of the
Slave of God throughout all His ministry. They thought they
worshipped God and were zealous for Him, not knowing that the
very God of their forefathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob, was immediately before them in the form of a slave to
serve them. They were blinded by their traditional religion
from seeing Him in God's economy, and they plotted to kill
Him. Later they actually killed Him (15:1, 31).

The reasoning scribes, who considered themselves "scriptural"
and "theological," acknowledged the Slave-Savior merely as a
man, even a despised Nazarene (John 1:45-46). They did not
realize that the One who forgave the sins of the paralytic was
actually the forgiving God incarnated in the form of a lowly
man. The scribes, assuming that they knew the Scriptures,
thought that only God had authority to forgive sins, and that
Jesus, who in their eyes was only a man, blasphemed God when
He said, "Your sins are forgiven." This indicates that they
did not realize that the Lord was God.

The Gospel of Mark presents the Lord in the likeness of man
and in the form of a slave. The scribes did not realize that
within the humanity of this Slave there was deity. The Lord
behaved Himself in such a way as to indicate that within His
humanity there was deity. The Lord was a Nazarene in the form
of a slave; yet He had omniscience. Because He was omniscient,
He knew what the scribes were saying in their hearts.
