Is the God of the Jews and Christians the Same?

Is the God of the Jews and Christians the Same?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1Pet 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us
unto a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In this verse Peter speaks not only of God, but speaks of the
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The unbelieving Jews
knew about God. Their God was the One who created the universe.
But these Jews would not believe that their God was also the
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is an important
difference here. Of course, it is not true to say that the Jews
believe in one God and that Christians believe in a different
God. The crucial point here is that there is a great difference
between the understanding and realization concerning God among
Jews and among Christians. According to the understanding of
the Jews, God is the Creator of the universe, but He is not the
God and Father of Jesus Christ. In our understanding, however,
God is both the Creator of the universe and the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 20:17). This is the reason Peter
uses the definite article before "God" in 1:3.

In 1:3 Peter declares that the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ has regenerated us unto a living hope according to His
great mercy. Here we see that once again Peter uses an
adjective: he speaks not merely of God's mercy, but speaks of
His great mercy. Paul also speaks concerning God's mercy, but
he does not use the adjective "great" to describe it.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Free Speech Has a Price, by Rubel Shelly

The brilliant founders of the American republic set in place the
explicit provision for freedom of speech with the First Amendment to
the United States Constitution. Against the restrictive laws of
England, they were determined to allow free and unfettered public
discourse about government, public policy, and the officials in charge
of the general welfare.

From that beginning point, we have evolved a shallow concept of free
speech that is invoked for the most worthless of causes. Pornography,
religious hucksterism, racist literature, homophobic web sites -- all
appeal to their freedom of speech to malign, exploit, and dehumanize
people made in God's image.

Yet the stark and honest truth is that our freedom of speech has been
purchased at a very high price. There was not only the blood of early
patriots but that of their heirs as well. That is a high price to pay!
Those of us still alive to enjoy a gift purchased at so great a cost
have payments to make yet.

Civility is not too much to ask of politicians and their supporters
during the current presidential campaign. Make your case. Give the
reasons why your party or proposal is better. But mud-slinging and
"going negative" are the accepted means of campaigning. Better not to
win the office than to gain it that way.

Good sportsmanship used to be part of the justification our educational
institutions gave for the huge outlay of money necessary to put teams
on fields and courts. Sports Illustrated recently commented that the
current college basketball season has been "the ugliest season in
years" for rude, boorish, and nasty fan behavior. The article cited an
incident where a woman attending her grandson's game was reduced to
tears when students turned from taunting the player on the floor to
chanting "whores" at his family members.

The price of free speech is voluntary restraint and dignity.

Reason demands better of us. But the restraint of reason seems to
vanish pretty quickly after a few beers. In baseball parks, more and
more teams are creating sections where alcohol is not served. Those
sections will never be very large, however, because of the revenue
generated from booze. Obscenities seem to come more easily and
frequently from throats lubricated by it.

Respect for basic human dignity is sacrificed when the honorable title
"free speech" is pronounced over churlish people who are using their
mouths for sexual harassment, racist slurs, or other abusive language.

So long as others of us fail to use our free speech to challenge
theirs, we are making the problem worse. Thus my thanks to a coach who
takes the floor to say he will pull the team and forfeit a game if the
student section or other fans don't stop their over-the-line rowdiness.
Hurray for the parent who won't put up with it from her own kid. And
three cheers for you at the self-control you model.

The price of free speech is voluntary restraint and dignity. It is a
critical element in treating others the way you want to be treated.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only
what is helpful for building others up according to their needs,
that it may benefit those who listen (Ephesians 4:29 TNIV).

Morning & Evening -- Matthew 26:56 and Matthew 15:27

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, March 27, 2008

MORNING:

"Then all the disciples forsook him and fled."
-- Matthew 26:56

He never deserted them, but they in cowardly fear of their lives, fled
from him in the very beginning of his sufferings. This is but one
instructive instance of the frailty of all believers if left to
themselves; they are but sheep at the best, and they flee when the wolf
cometh. They had all been warned of the danger, and had promised to die
rather than leave their Master; and yet they were seized with sudden
panic, and took to their heels. It may be, that I, at the opening of
this day, have braced up my mind to bear a trial for the Lord's sake,
and I imagine myself to be certain to exhibit perfect fidelity; but let
me be very jealous of myself, lest having the same evil heart of
unbelief, I should depart from my Lord as the apostles did. It is one
thing to promise, and quite another to perform. It would have been to
their eternal honour to have stood at Jesus' side right manfully; they
fled from honour; may I be kept from imitating them! Where else could
they have been so safe as near their Master, who could presently call
for twelve legions of angels? They fled from their true safety. O God,
let me not play the fool also. Divine grace can make the coward brave.
The smoking flax can flame forth like fire on the altar when the Lord
wills it. These very apostles who were timid as hares, grew to be bold
as lions after the Spirit had descended upon them, and even so the Holy
Spirit can make my recreant spirit brave to confess my Lord and witness
for his truth.

What anguish must have filled the Saviour as he saw his friends so
faithless! This was one bitter ingredient in his cup; but that cup is
drained dry; let me not put another drop in it. If I forsake my Lord, I
shall crucify him afresh, and put him to an open shame. Keep me, O
blessed Spirit, from an end so shameful.

EVENING:

"And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs
which fall from their master's table."
-- Matthew 15:27

This woman gained comfort in her misery by thinking GREAT THOUGHTS OF
CHRIST. The Master had talked about the children's bread: "Now," argued
she, "since thou art the Master of the table of grace, I know that thou
art a generous housekeeper, and there is sure to be abundance of bread
on thy table; there will be such an abundance for the children that
there will be crumbs to throw on the floor for the dogs, and the
children will fare none the worse because the dogs are fed." She
thought him one who kept so good a table that all that she needed would
only be a crumb in comparison; yet remember, what she wanted was to
have the devil cast out of her daughter. It was a very great thing to
her, but she had such a high esteem of Christ, that she said, "It is
nothing to him, it is but a crumb for Christ to give." This is the
royal road to comfort. Great thoughts of your sin alone will drive you
to despair; but great thoughts of Christ will pilot you into the haven
of peace. "My sins are many, but oh! it is nothing to Jesus to take
them all away. The weight of my guilt presses me down as a giant's foot
would crush a worm, but it is no more than a grain of dust to him,
because he has already borne its curse in his own body on the tree. It
will be but a small thing for him to give me full remission, although
it will be an infinite blessing for me to receive it." The woman opens
her soul's mouth very wide, expecting great things of Jesus, and he
fills it with his love. Dear reader, do the same. She confessed what
Christ laid at her door, but she laid fast hold upon him, and drew
arguments even out of his hard words; she believed great things of him,
and she thus overcame him. SHE WON THE VICTORY BY BELIEVING IN HIM. Her
case is an instance of prevailing faith; and if we would conquer like
her, we must imitate her tactics.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Vision By Personal Character"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 27, 2008

VISION BY PERSONAL CHARACTER

Come up hither, and I will shew thee things.

Revelation 4:1

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=re+4:1&sr=1

An elevated mood can only come out of an elevated habit of personal
character. If in the externals of your life you live up to the
highest you know, God will continually say - "Friend, go up higher."
The golden rule in temptation is - Go higher. When you get higher up,
you face other temptations and characteristics. Satan uses the
strategy of elevation in temptation, and God does the same, but the
effect is different. When the devil puts you into an elevated place,
he makes you screw your idea of holiness beyond what flesh and blood
could ever hear, it is a spiritual acrobatic performance, you are
just poised and dare not move; but when God elevates you by His grace
into the heavenly places, instead of finding a pinnacle to cling to,
you find a great table-land where it is easy to move.

Compare this week in your spiritual history with the same week last
year and see how God has called you up higher. We have all been
brought to see from a higher standpoint. Never let God give you one
point of truth which you do not instantly live up to. Always work it
out, keep in the light of it.

Growth in grace is measured not by the fact that you have not gone
back, but that you have an in sight into where you are spiritually;
you have heard God say "Come up higher," not to you personally, but
to the insight of your character.

"Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?" God has to hide
from us what He does until by personal character we get to the place
where He can reveal it.
