Morning & Evening -- Isaiah 37:22 and Psalms 42:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, July 21, 2008

MORNING:

"The daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee."
-- Isaiah 37:22

Reassured by the Word of the Lord, the poor trembling citizens of Zion
grew bold, and shook their heads at Sennacherib's boastful threats.
Strong faith enables the servants of God to look with calm contempt
upon their most haughty foes. We know that our enemies are attempting
impossibilities. They seek to destroy the eternal life, which cannot
die while Jesus lives; to overthrow the citadel, against which the
gates of hell shall not prevail. They kick against the pricks to their
own wounding, and rush upon the bosses of Jehovah's buckler to their
own hurt.

We know their weakness. What are they but men? And what is man but a
worm? They roar and swell like waves of the sea, foaming out their own
shame. When the Lord ariseth, they shall fly as chaff before the wind,
and be consumed as crackling thorns. Their utter powerlessness to do
damage to the cause of God and his truth, may make the weakest soldiers
in Zion's ranks laugh them to scorn.

Above all, we know that the Most High is with us, and when he dresses
himself in arms, where are his enemies? If he cometh forth from his
place, the potsherds of the earth will not long contend with their
Maker. His rod of iron shall dash them in pieces like a potter's
vessel, and their very remembrance shall perish from the earth. Away,
then, all fears, the kingdom is safe in the King's hands. Let us shout
for joy, for the Lord reigneth, and his foes shall be as straw for the
dunghill.

"As true as God's own word is true;
Nor earth, nor hell, with all their crew,
Against us shall prevail.
A jest, and by-word, are they grown;
God is with us, we are his own,
Our victory cannot fail."

EVENING:

"Why go I mourning?"
-- Psalms 42:9

Canst thou answer this, believer? Canst thou find any reason why thou
art so often mourning instead of rejoicing? Why yield to gloomy
anticipations? Who told thee that the night would never end in day? Who
told thee that the sea of circumstances would ebb out till there should
be nothing left but long leagues of the mud of horrible poverty? Who
told thee that the winter of thy discontent would proceed from frost to
frost, from snow, and ice, and hail, to deeper snow, and yet more heavy
tempest of despair? Knowest thou not that day follows night, that flood
comes after ebb, that spring and summer succeed winter? Hope thou then!
Hope thou ever! For God fails thee not. Dost thou not know that thy God
loves thee in the midst of all this? Mountains, when in darkness
hidden, are as real as in day, and God's love is as true to thee now as
it was in thy brightest moments. No father chastens always: thy Lord
hates the rod as much as thou dost; he only cares to use it for that
reason which should make thee willing to receive it, namely, that it
works thy lasting good. Thou shalt yet climb Jacob's ladder with the
angels, and behold him who sits at the top of it-thy covenant God. Thou
shalt yet, amidst the splendours of eternity, forget the trials of
time, or only remember them to bless the God who led thee through them,
and wrought thy lasting good by them. Come, sing in the midst of
tribulation. Rejoice even while passing through the furnace. Make the
wilderness to blossom like the rose! Cause the desert to ring with
thine exulting joys, for these light afflictions will soon be over, and
then "for ever with the Lord," thy bliss shall never wane.

"Faint not nor fear, his arms are near,
He changeth not, and thou art dear;
Only believe and thou shalt see,
That Christ is all in all to thee."

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Faith Really Is....3

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Faith Really Is....3
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead. Hebrews 11:4 NIV

What if I sent my wife some flowers this week? It just might make her day, you think? What if, however, she found out that I really didn't want to send her the flowers, because I'm too cheap, and that her father had given me the money to send them? And, in fact, my wife's mother had actually made the call to the flower shop, told them where to send them, and asked them to sign my name? Do you think my wife would be impressed still?

Now, that didn't happen; and, it is hopefully not going to, but that is the kind of feeling God had over the offering Cain brought. Cain didn't want to bring it. He didn't want to give up what was his. Possibly because he didn't see how he would get it back.

Abel, on the other hand, was pleased to offer God a sacrifice. He wanted to take something he had and give it to God.

Taking that first illustration about sending my wife the flowers. What if I did indeed send them to her. What if later she found out that I had skipped lunch for a week to save up enough money to buy her the flowers? Do you think she would have felt special then?

By faith Abel offered God a sacrifice, knowing that God was worthy of the sacrifice. He didn't consider his own agenda, but only the feelings of God, wanting to give God something just because he loved Him. That faith pleased God.

Do you have that kind of faith? Do you want to please God just because He is God? Do you desire to give gifts to God; to serve God; because of what He did for you on the cross?

Faith is placing your trust in God so deeply that you would be willing to give Him your very best, expecting nothing in return, simply because He is worthy of whatever you give Him.

That is faith.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Gateway To The Kingdom"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 21, 2008

THE GATEWAY TO THE KINGDOM

Blessed are the poor in spirit.

Matthew 5:3
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+5:3&sr=1

Beware of placing Our Lord as a Teacher first. If Jesus Christ is a
Teacher only, then all He can do is to tantalize me by erecting a
standard I can not attain. What is the use of presenting me with an
ideal I cannot possibly come near? I am happier without knowing it.
What is the good of telling me to be what I never can be - to be pure
in heart, to do more than my duty, to be perfectly devoted to God? I
must know Jesus Christ as Saviour before His teaching has any meaning
for me other than that of an ideal which leads to despair. But when I
am born again of the Spirit of God, I know that Jesus Christ did not
come to teach only: He came to make me what He teaches I should be.
The Redemption means that Jesus Christ can put into any man the
disposition that ruled His own life, and all the standards God gives
are based on that disposition.

The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount produces despair in the
natural man - the very thing Jesus means it to do. As long as we have
a self-righteous, conceited notion that we can carry out Our Lord's
teaching, God will allow us to go on until we break our ignorance
over some obstacle, then we are willing to come to Him as paupers and
receive from Him. "Blessed are the paupers in spirit," that is the
first principle in the Kingdom of God. The bedrock in Jesus Christ's
kingdom is poverty, not possession; not decisions for Jesus Christ,
but a sense of absolute futility - I cannot begin to do it. Then
Jesus says - Blessed are you. That is the entrance, and it does take
us a long while to believe we are poor! The knowledge of our own
poverty brings us to the moral frontier where Jesus Christ works.

Praying with Paul : "God's Will: Perfect Love"

GOD'S WILL: PERFECT LOVE

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+4:9-12

Dear Father, perfecter of our love,

Don't ever let us disregard you or your Holy Spirit, which you
give us. Give us perfect love for our brothers and sisters in
Christ. Let this teaching of yours fill our minds. Let this love
among us grow more and more, every day and in every way.

May we aspire to live quietly, to mind our own affairs, and to
work with our hands or our minds, so that we may be dependent on no
one and command the respect of those outside your family. May that
respect lead them to listen, to heed, and also to become your
children.

In the name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

WJD! -- Who Can Be Saved? -- Mark 10:25-26

Who Can Be Saved?

"And it will be very hard for rich people to enter the
kingdom of God! It would be easier for a camel to go through
the eye of a needle!" The followers were more amazed and said
to each other, "Then who can be saved?"

-- Mark 10:25-26 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
If we are talking about meeting a legal requirement to be saved, we're
all doomed. God is holy and we are not. God is pure and we are not. God
is generous and we struggle to be. God is genuine and we struggle with
hypocrisy. God is gracious and we are often petty and grudging. And ...
when it comes to money, the vast majority of people are selfish or
fearful or miserly or faithless. So who can be saved? Ah, God has
already provided for our shortcomings and rebellious moments.
Otherwise, who could be saved!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, I recognize the gift of salvation as a gift from your grace.
I do not deserve it. I did not earn it. However, dear Father, please
know I cherish this gift of grace and I praise you for your loving and
sacrificial generosity shown me in Jesus. Amen.

"Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who is among
