There Is No Tomorrow, by Bill Sherrill

We spend so much time worrying about those things over which we have
little or no control and so little time doing the things which we can
do to insure the future. We have no real control over the length of
life, but tremendous opportunities to provide for the quality of the
life we have.

Jesus spoke to his listeners from the mountain concerning this very
matter. "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" (Matthew
6:27). His conclusion is, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its
own" (Matthew 6:34).

Still, we continue to allow the anxieties of those things we cannot
control draw from us the energy we need to enjoy the productive life
that we could have.

What can you do that will last forever?

We always seem to concern ourselves with predicting our own future. And
we are seldom, if ever, accurate! Again, James addresses the plans for
the coming day this way:

Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or
that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money."
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your
life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then
vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we
will live and do this or that" (James 4:13-15).

James' words give us an interesting commentary on the words of Jesus.
It is not a matter of being thoughtless about tomorrow, but rather we
are to keep things in proper perspective. The rule then is this: Be
free from anxiety by trusting God to oversee the matters of your life.
And even when making the everyday plans for an orderly life, remember
that you are always in the will of God. The most significant matter is
to always be willing to live in the Father's will!

So, for today, determine what you can do that will last forever. Don't
put that matter off. One of the best ways to be free from anxiety is to
not only know that you are in the hands of God, but to be certain that
you are prepared to meet Him face to face. After all, there is no
tomorrow, there is just today.

MORNING:

"I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as
servants upon the earth."
-- Ecclesiastes 10:7

Upstarts frequently usurp the highest places, while the truly great
pine in obscurity. This is a riddle in providence whose solution will
one day gladden the hearts of the upright; but it is so common a fact,
that none of us should murmur if it should fall to our own lot. When
our Lord was upon earth, although he is the Prince of the kings of the
earth, yet he walked the footpath of weariness and service as the
Servant of servants: what wonder is it if his followers, who are
princes of the blood, should also be looked down upon as inferior and
contemptible persons? The world is upside down, and therefore, the
first are last and the last first. See how the servile sons of Satan
lord it in the earth! What a high horse they ride! How they lift up
their horn on high! Haman is in the court, while Mordecai sits in the
gate; David wanders on the mountains, while Saul reigns in state;
Elijah is complaining in the cave while Jezebel is boasting in the
palace; yet who would wish to take the places of the proud rebels? and
who, on the other hand, might not envy the despised saints? When the
wheel turns, those who are lowest rise, and the highest sink. Patience,
then, believer, eternity will right the wrongs of time.

Let us not fall into the error of letting our passions and carnal
appetites ride in triumph, while our nobler powers walk in the dust.
Grace must reign as a prince, and make the members of the body
instruments of righteousness. The Holy Spirit loves order, and he
therefore sets our powers and faculties in due rank and place, giving
the highest room to those spiritual faculties which link us with the
great King; let us not disturb the divine arrangement, but ask for
grace that we may keep under our body and bring it into subjection. We
were not new created to allow our passions to rule over us, but that
we, as kings, may reign in Christ Jesus over the triple kingdom of
spirit, soul, and body, to the glory of God the Father.

EVENING:

"And he requested for himself that he might die."
-- 1 Kings 19:4

It was a remarkable thing that the man who was never to die, for whom
God had ordained an infinitely better lot, the man who should be
carried to heaven in a chariot of fire, and be translated, that he
should not see death-should thus pray, "Let me die, I am no better than
my fathers." We have here a memorable proof that God does not always
answer prayer in kind, though he always does in effect. He gave Elias
something better than that which he asked for, and thus really heard
and answered him. Strange was it that the lion-hearted Elijah should be
so depressed by Jezebel's threat as to ask to die, and blessedly kind
was it on the part of our heavenly Father that he did not take his
desponding servant at his word. There is a limit to the doctrine of the
prayer of faith. We are not to expect that God will give us everything
we choose to ask for. We know that we sometimes ask, and do not
receive, because we ask amiss. If we ask for that which is not
promised-if we run counter to the spirit which the Lord would have us
cultivate-if we ask contrary to his will, or to the decrees of his
providence-if we ask merely for the gratification of our own ease, and
without an eye to his glory, we must not expect that we shall receive.
Yet, when we ask in faith, nothing doubting, if we receive not the
precise thing asked for, we shall receive an equivalent, and more than
an equivalent, for it. As one remarks, "If the Lord does not pay in
silver, he will in gold; and if he does not pay in gold, he will in
diamonds." If he does not give you precisely what you ask for, he will
give you that which is tantamount to it, and that which you will
greatly rejoice to receive in lieu thereof. Be then, dear reader, much
in prayer, and make this evening a season of earnest intercession, but
take heed what you ask.

"OUT OF THE WRECK I RISE"

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

Romans 8:35

God does not keep a man immune from trouble; He says - "I will be
with him in trouble." It does not matter what actual troubles in the
most extreme form get hold of a man's life, not one of them can
separate him from his relationship to God. We are "more than
conquerors in all these things." Paul is not talking of imaginary
things, but of things that are desperately actual; and he says we are
super-victors in the midst of them, not by our ingenuity, or by our
courage, or by anything other than the fact that not one of them
affects our relationship to God in Jesus Christ. Rightly or wrongly,
we are where we are, exactly in the condition we are in. I am sorry
for the Christian who has not something in his circumstances he
wishes was not there.

"Shall tribulation...?" Tribulation is never a noble thing; but let
tribulation be what it may - exhausting, galling, fatiguing, it is
not able to separate us from the love of God. Never let cares or
tribulations separate you from the fact that God loves you.

"Shall anguish...?" - can God's love hold when everything says that
His love is a lie, and that there is no such thing as justice?

"Shall famine...?" - can we not only believe in the love of God but
be more than conquerors, even while we are being starved?

Either Jesus Christ is a deceiver and Paul is deluded, or some
extraordinary thing happens to a man who holds on to the love of God
when the odds are all against God's character. Logic is silenced in
the face of every one of these things. Only one thing can account for
it - the love of God in Christ Jesus. "Out of the wreck I rise" every
time.

More than a Prophet

"So what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, and I tell
you, John is more than a prophet."

-- Matthew 11:9 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
As Amos had prophesied, there was a famine in the land of God's people.
It was a horrible famine. It was a long famine! It was a famine for the
Word of the LORD. God's voice was not heard through his prophets. The
passionate fire that once had spoken to Israel was a silent dying
ember. God's chosen people suffered; they believed the Almighty heard
them, but he refused to act decisively on their behalf and refused to
speak directly to them. However, when John began to preach, the voice
of God was heard again. Many somehow knew it. Many of them somehow
recognized it was God's Word through a man's voice. The famine was
over. They poured out into the desert lands to see him and hear God's
truth. They were hungry, and only God's Word could feed that empty
place in their souls. But John was more than a prophet. His coming had
been prophesied. He was a servant to others who spoke boldly to the
people about God's truth. He especially served the Christ, preparing
the hearts of the people for the Messiah's ministry. John's voice was
the signal that the prophets' words were being fulfilled -- not years
later, but at that very moment.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty God, thank you for fulfilling your promises. Thank you for
choosing ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Thanks for using
special servants to re-awaken hope and speak your Word through their
own voices. Give me the fervor, the passion, and the courage to share
your gospel message today and each day of my life. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

6 Reasons Why PDFs Are Useful

If you archive health, wellness and benefits information online, or if you attach large files (booklets, manuals, etc.) to e-mails sent to employees, you're probably familiar with "portable document files" (PDFs). Still, some confusion pervades the PDF world, so here's basic information, plus reasons why you can benefit from using PDFs:

The PDF is a "read only" file format—it can be opened, but not altered. This makes it suitable for many situations where document authenticity is important. Some PDFs are interactive forms, so the reader can complete information, save the file and return it to the sender. Adobe Acrobat Reader is the most common free program that allows you to view PDFs, and the software is often pre-installed on computers. (The current version is Adobe Acrobat 9.)

1. PDFs print better than Web pages.

2. PDFs can be made small, making them usable in low bandwidth environments.

3. PDFs can have hypertext links, meaning they can link to other resources on the Internet.

4. PDFs can bundle fonts when they're saved, making them useful for storing and delivering digital photos and illustrations.

5. PDFs can be encrypted so that a password is needed to view or edit the contents, if security of the document matters.

6. PDFs can be indexed (read and catalogued) by major search engines, which can help your company's search engine rankings.

THOUGHT:
You've probably had a similar experience to this one. Someone
asks you how you're doing. At first, they seem interested, but as
you begin to share the burdens of your heart, you begin to realize
that they aren't really listening and aren't really interested;
they're just being polite. Most people have so many burdens they
simply don't know what to do with more. Our Father in heaven,
however, says "Cast all your anxieties on me. You can share all of
them with me, because I genuinely care for you."

PRAYER:
Father, I have been blessed in so many ways. Thank you so very
much. I do have some really burdensome things, however, that
trouble me. Please do with the following concerns what is best for
each of the people involved and what brings you the most glory.
(Please share your burdens and concerns with the Lord.) I thank you
for listening to my words and my heart. In Jesus' name. Amen.
