=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Am I Lucky ... Or What?, by Steve Ridgell

"Boy, you are one lucky fella." That's what the policeman told me when
he was evaluating the wreck. I had been stopped at a red light when a
car ran into the back of my pickup. There was no sound of brakes and no
skid marks. She hit hard enough to cave in the front of her car and
deploy the airbag. It was such a violent collision that my spare tire
was knocked from underneath the truck. The frame was even bent from the
force of the collision. And I was not hurt. I was not even sore. I had
absolutely no discomfort from the accident. The medics and police kept
asking me if I was sure I was not hurt. Everyone kept talking about how
lucky I was.

But my truck was totaled. I was going to have to find a new one. I
worked out what I thought I could pay -- how much per month and for how
long. Then I began to shop around. The dealer I usually work with had a
demo they were ready to sell. And in this economic climate there were a
couple of other discounts available. So I figured out what I would have
to receive for my totaled vehicle for the deal to work. The salesman
did not think I would get what I needed. But I did. Most people would
call that "dumb luck."

I would agree with both of these assessments except for one thing: I am
a Christian. I often pray for God to protect me on my travels. When I
began shopping for another truck, I prayed that God would help me find
the right vehicle that would be reliable but keep me fiscally
responsible. I believed my truck had belonged to God and I promised Him
the next one would also.

I do not believe in luck. I believe in God.

Everyone operates with a world view that enables them to "make sense"
of what happens in this world. Some believe in dumb luck; others call
it blind fate. I believe in God. I believe God is active in this world
for His people. He wants you to be one of those people. He wants you so
much that He sent his Son Jesus to this earth to provide a way for you
to get to Him.

So how did God work in my situation? I do not know that I completely
understand. If I did, I would be God ... and I am not. But it makes
more sense to me that God was at work rather than attribute all that to
luck. If you would like to know more about a relationship with a God
that is real and active in your world, write me at
steve@hopeforlife.org and let's talk. Or join the discussion at our

Morning & Evening -- 2 Samuel 9:13 and 2 Samuel 9:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

MORNING:

"So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat
continually at the king's table; and was lame on both his
feet."
-- 2 Samuel 9:13

Mephibosheth was no great ornament to a royal table, yet he had a
continual place at David's board, because the king could see in his
face the features of the beloved Jonathan. Like Mephibosheth, we may
cry unto the King of Glory, "What is thy servant, that thou shouldst
look upon such a dead dog as I am?" but still the Lord indulges us with
most familiar intercourse with himself, because he sees in our
countenances the remembrance of his dearly-beloved Jesus. The Lord's
people are dear for another's sake. Such is the love which the Father
bears to his only begotten, that for his sake he raises his lowly
brethren from poverty and banishment, to courtly companionship, noble
rank, and royal provision. Their deformity shall not rob them of their
privileges. Lameness is no bar to sonship; the cripple is as much the
heir as if he could run like Asahel. Our right does not limp, though
our might may. A king's table is a noble hiding-place for lame legs,
and at the gospel feast we learn to glory in infirmities, because the
power of Christ resteth upon us. Yet grievous disability may mar the
persons of the best-loved saints. Here is one feasted by David, and yet
so lame in both his feet that he could not go up with the king when he
fled from the city, and was therefore maligned and injured by his
servant Ziba. Saints whose faith is weak, and whose knowledge is
slender, are great losers; they are exposed to many enemies, and cannot
follow the king whithersoever he goeth. This disease frequently arises
from falls. Bad nursing in their spiritual infancy often causes
converts to fall into a despondency from which they never recover, and
sin in other cases brings broken bones. Lord, help the lame to leap
like an hart, and satisfy all thy people with the bread of thy table!

EVENING:

"What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a
dead dog as I am?"
-- 2 Samuel 9:8

If Mephibosheth was thus humbled by David's kindness, what shall we be
in the presence of our gracious Lord? The more grace we have, the less
we shall think of ourselves, for grace, like light, reveals our
impurity. Eminent saints have scarcely known to what to compare
themselves, their sense of unworthiness has been so clear and keen. "I
am," says holy Rutherford, "a dry and withered branch, a piece of dead
carcass, dry bones, and not able to step over a straw." In another
place he writes, "Except as to open outbreakings, I want nothing of
what Judas and Cain had." The meanest objects in nature appear to the
humbled mind to have a preference above itself, because they have never
contracted sin: a dog may be greedy, fierce, or filthy, but it has no
conscience to violate, no Holy Spirit to resist. A dog may be a
worthless animal, and yet by a little kindness it is soon won to love
its master, and is faithful unto death; but we forget the goodness of
the Lord, and follow not at his call. The term "dead dog" is the most
expressive of all terms of contempt, but it is none too strong to
express the self- abhorrence of instructed believers. They do not
affect mock modesty, they mean what they say, they have weighed
themselves in the balances of the sanctuary, and found out the vanity
of their nature. At best, we are but clay, animated dust, mere walking
hillocks; but viewed as sinners, we are monsters indeed. Let it be
published in heaven as a wonder, that the Lord Jesus should set his
heart's love upon such as we are. Dust and ashes though we be, we must
and will "magnify the exceeding greatness of his grace." Could not his
heart find rest in heaven? Must he needs come to these tents of Kedar
for a spouse, and choose a bride upon whom the sun had looked? O
heavens and earth, break forth into a song, and give all glory to our
sweet Lord Jesus.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Life That Lives"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 27, 2009

THE LIFE THAT LIVES

Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued
with power from on high.

Luke 24:49
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+24:49&sr=1

The disciples had to tarry until the day of Pentecost not for their
own preparation only; they had to wait until the Lord was glorified
historically. As soon as He was glorified, what happened? "Therefore
being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the
Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, He hath shed forth this, which
ye now see and hear." The parenthesis in John 7:39 ("For the Holy
Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified")
does not apply to us; the Holy Ghost has been given, the Lord is
glorified; the waiting depends not on God's providence, but on our
fitness.

The Holy Spirit's influence and power were at work before Pentecost,
but He was not here. Immediately Our Lord was glorified in Ascension,
the Holy Spirit came into this world, and He has been here ever
since. We have to receive the revelation that He is here. The
reception of the Holy Spirit is the maintained attitude of a
believer. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we receive quickening life
from the ascended Lord.

It is not the baptism of the Holy Ghost which changes men, but the
power of the ascended Christ coming into men's lives by the Holy
Ghost that changes them. We too often divorce what the New Testament
never divorces. The baptism of the Holy Ghost is not an experience
apart from Jesus Christ: it is the evidence of the ascended Christ.

The baptism of the Holy Ghost does not make you think of Time or
Eternity, it is one amazing glorious NOW. "This is life eternal that
they might know Thee." Begin to know Him now, and finish never.

Praying with Paul : "Open Statement of Truth"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

OPEN STATEMENT OF TRUTH

2 Corinthians 4:1-6
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+4:1-6

Dear Father, powerful sustainer,

You have called me to minister your mercy to the world, so let me
never lose heart or give up! May I renounce disgraceful,
underhanded ways in all forms and refuse to practice cunning or to
tamper with your word.

Let me state truth plainly and thereby commend myself to every
one's conscience in your sight. Even if the message of Good News is
veiled to some, it is veiled only to those who are perishing! Open
the eyes of those whom the god of this world has blinded. May they
see the light of the Good News, the glory of Christ, your very
likeness.

May I not put forth myself, but Jesus Christ, for I am your
servant, your slave, for Jesus' sake! For you have said, "Let light
shine out of darkness." I invite you to shine out of my heart so
that others will see the light of your glory, the face of Jesus
Christ, in my life.

In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Only the Son Knows -- Matthew 11:27

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Only the Son Knows

"My Father has given me all things. No person knows the
Son--only the Father knows the Son. And no person knows the
Father--only the Son knows the Father. And the only people
that will know about the Father are those people the Son
chooses to tell."

-- Matthew 11:27 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The New Testament makes strong and exclusive claims for Jesus. These
claims are not based just upon the conclusions of men, but go back to
several powerful claims of Jesus. While these claims are most clearly
seen in the Gospel of John (the "I Am" statements of Jesus and the
emphasis on the Son's knowing and doing the Father's will), they occur
in the other Gospels as well. In this statement, Jesus is claiming to
be the only one to really know the Father and his will. In the Sermon
on the Mount, Jesus speaks as one who has authority, making clear the
will of God. As he leaves the earth, he does so with all authority --
in both the spiritual realm ("in heaven") and in the physical realm
("on earth"). The bottom line for Jesus' followers is what we do in
response to Jesus as Lord. What we believe about him and who we believe
him to be determine everything of lasting and eternal value in our
lives.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Sacrificial Father, thank you for sending Jesus so I could know you and
your will. Your love and kindness in sending him has given me
confidence that when I stand before you in judgment, it will be to hear
you say, "This is my child, whom I love, and in whom I am well
pleased." For this hope and assurance, I offer you my praise, my life,
and my all. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Isaiah 40:28-29

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/

May 27, 2009

VERSE:
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting
God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired
or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives
strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
-- Isaiah 40:28-29
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Isaiah+40:28-29

THOUGHT:
God is eternal. He has unlimited power. His supply of strength
is limitless. He blesses and shares his grace without growing
tired. Most importantly, he longs to share his power and grace with
us daily.

PRAYER:
Almighty and eternal God, loving and generous in your mercy,
thank you for giving me strength in my weariness, guidance in my
confusion, and hope in my despair. Please bless me with courage to
follow your will and trust in your presence through the Holy
Spirit. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

May 27, 2009

VERSE:
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting
God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not,
neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He
giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he
increaseth strength.
-- Isaiah 40:28-29

Amen.
