Mustard Seed Thoughts: Saul's Power 2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Saul's Power 2
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul's men began to scatter. So he said, "Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings. " And Saul offered up the burnt offering. 1 Samuel 13:8-9 NIV

To understand what Saul is doing wrong here, you will need another scripture. In 1 Samuel 10:8 Samuel says to Saul "Go down ahead of me to Gilgal. I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do."

What did Samuel, the man of God, tell Saul to do? He told him to wait, didn't he? He asked Saul to wait seven days. Samuel had told Saul that he would be there and that he would do the burnt offering at the end of seven days. Saul was supposed to wait it out. Why didn't he?

Saul took things into his own hands. He decided, on his own, that Samuel was taking too long. Saul saw his men afraid and runni ng away, and he began to get discouraged. He believed that the burnt offering would bring God's favor, so he sacrificed before the Lord and before Samuel could arrive.

Have you ever taken things into your own hands? Do you sometimes fail to wait on God, before you start to panic? Do you get restless if you have to wait?

I can tell you now that, as you will see over the next few days of this story, Saul is going to lose far more than he gained, by not waiting upon the Lord.

Morning & Evening -- Galatians 5:17 and Matthew 19:16

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

MORNING:

"For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit
against the flesh."
-- Galatians 5:17

In every believer's heart there is a constant struggle between the old
nature and the new. The old nature is very active, and loses no
opportunity of plying all the weapons of its deadly armoury against
newborn grace; while on the other hand, the new nature is ever on the
watch to resist and destroy its enemy. Grace within us will employ
prayer, and faith, and hope, and love, to cast out the evil; it takes
unto it the "whole armour of God," and wrestles earnestly. These two
opposing natures will never cease to struggle so long as we are in this
world. The battle of "Christian" with "Apollyon" lasted three hours,
but the battle of Christian with himself lasted all the way from the
Wicket Gate in the river Jordan. The enemy is so securely entrenched
within us that he can never be driven out while we are in this body:
but although we are closely beset, and often in sore conflict, we have
an Almighty helper, even Jesus, the Captain of our salvation, who is
ever with us, and who assures us that we shall eventually come off more
than conquerors through him. With such assistance the new-born nature
is more than a match for its foes. Are you fighting with the adversary
to-day? Are Satan, the world, and the flesh, all against you? Be not
discouraged nor dismayed. Fight on! For God himself is with you;
Jehovah Nissi is your banner, and Jehovah Rophi is the healer of your
wounds. Fear not, you shall overcome, for who can defeat Omnipotence?
Fight on, "looking unto Jesus"; and though long and stern be the
conflict, sweet will be the victory, and glorious the promised reward.

"From strength to strength go on;
Wrestle, and fight, and pray,
Tread all the powers of darkness down,
And win the well-fought day."

EVENING:

"Good Master."
-- Matthew 19:16

If the young man in the gospel used this title in speaking to our Lord,
how much more fitly may I thus address him! He is indeed my Master in
both senses, a ruling Master and a teaching Master. I delight to run
upon his errands, and to sit at his feet. I am both his servant and his
disciple, and count it my highest honour to own the double character.
If he should ask me why I call him "good," I should have a ready
answer. It is true that "there is none good but one, that is, God," but
then he is God, and all the goodness of Deity shines forth in him. In
my experience, I have found him good, so good, indeed, that all the
good I have has come to me through him. He was good to me when I was
dead in sin, for he raised me by his Spirit's power; he has been good
to me in all my needs, trials, struggles, and sorrows. Never could
there be a better Master, for his service is freedom, his rule is love:
I wish I were one thousandth part as good a servant. When he teaches me
as my Rabbi, he is unspeakably good, his doctrine is divine, his manner
is condescending, his spirit is gentleness itself. No error mingles
with his instruction-pure is the golden truth which he brings forth,
and all his teachings lead to goodness, sanctifying as well as edifying
the disciple. Angels find him a good Master and delight to pay their
homage at his footstool. The ancient saints proved him to be a good
Master, and each of them rejoiced to sing, "I am thy servant, O Lord!"
My own humble testimony must certainly be to the same effect. I will
bear this witness before my friends and neighbours, for possibly they
may be led by my testimony to seek my Lord Jesus as their Master. O
that they would do so! They would never repent so wise a deed. If they
would but take his easy yoke, they would find themselves in so royal a
service that they would enlist in it for ever.

My Utmost For His Highest : "What Are You Haunted By?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 2, 2009

WHAT ARE YOU HAUNTED BY?

What man is he that feareth the Lord?"

Psalms 25:12
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ps+25:12&sr=1

What are you haunted by? You will say - By nothing, but we are all
haunted by something, generally by ourselves, or, if we are
Christians, by our experience. The Psalmist says we are to be haunted
by God. The abiding consciousness of the life is to be God, not
thinking about Him. The whole of our life inside and out is to be
absolutely haunted by the presence of God. A child's consciousness is
so mother-haunted that although the child is not consciously thinking
of its mother, yet when calamity arises, the relationship that abides
is that of the mother. So we are to live and move and have our being
in God, to look at everything in relation to God, because the abiding
consciousness of God pushes itself to the front all the time.

If we are haunted by God, nothing else can get in, no cares, no
tribulation, no anxieties. We see now why Our Lord so emphasized the
sin of worry. How can we dare be so utterly unbelieving when God is
round about us? To be haunted by God is to have an effective
barricade against all the onslaughts of the enemy.

"His soul shall dwell at ease." In tribulation, misunderstanding,
slander, in the midst of all these things, if our life is hid with
Christ in God, He will keep us at ease. We rob ourselves of the
marvellous revelation of this abiding companionship of God. "God is
our Refuge" - nothing can come through that shelter.

Praying with Paul : "Following His Example"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

FOLLOWING HIS EXAMPLE

2 Corinthians 6:1-11
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+6:1-11

Dear Father, blessed bestower of grace,

As your servant I commend myself to you as your will may require:
Through great endurance, if need be - afflictions, hardships,
calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, staying
awake, hunger! Through goodness - purity, knowledge, forbearance,
kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, and truthful speech.
Through the power of God - with weapons of righteousness for the
right hand and the left. In disparity - in honor and dishonor, in
ill-repute and good-repute, treated as an imposter and yet true, as
unknown and yet well-known, as dying, yet behold I live, as
punished but not yet killed, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as
poor yet making many rich, as having nothing and yet possessing
everything!

In the name of Jesus, who suffered for us, I ask for the grace and
will-power to live according to his example. Amen.

WJD! -- Lord! -- Matthew 12:8

Lord!

"The Son of Man is Lord (ruler) over the Sabbath day."

-- Matthew 12:8 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
There was no more important symbol or source of identity for the Jewish
people than the Sabbath. Rules, laws, traditions, and respect grew up
around the original Law and encrusted it with layers of a combination
of inconsequential, restrictive, and harmful traditions. So when Jesus
takes on his opponents over the issue of the Sabbath, we shouldn't be
surprised by their bitter opposition and hostile criticism. As Jewish
self-identity became fused to the Sabbath, the traditions and
attachments to it became more important for the religious aristocracy
than the people who celebrated Sabbath or even than the reasons God
provided a rest for his people and demanded that the Sabbath be
honored. Like a bolt of thunder, Jesus' simple words, "The Son of Man
is Lord of the Sabbath," would have raised their confrontation and
hatred of him to a fevered pitch. He drove them to the point of
decision. He left them no option but to believe or scheme to get rid of
him. They chose the latter. What do we choose? Are we ready to let him
redefine the heart and hope of our worship?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy God, I thank you so much for sending Jesus. I want him to be Lord
of every area of my life, especially my understanding of your desire
for worship and community. As I continue to read and learn from him,
inform my heart through your Spirit to better know him and be conformed
into his likeness. You sacrificed so much; help me to hold back nothing
as I seek to live for him. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Galatians 6:2

June 2, 2009

VERSE:
Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the
law of Christ.

-- Galatians 6:2
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+6:2

THOUGHT:
This is just another way of saying, "Love your neighbor as
yourself!" Jesus came to bear our burdens and carry away the stain
and pain of our sin. (Read Isaiah 53 for a powerful description of
God's Suffering Servant, a passage quoted in the New Testament in
reference to Jesus.) He now asks us to live redemptively, in
practical ways, toward those around us. More than just praying, or
asking what we can do to help, we are called to serve, minister,
and assist others who are burdened.

PRAYER:
Holy and merciful God, please give me eyes to see, a heart
willing to serve, and hands ready to help the people in my path who
need a burden lifted. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
