Happy Memorial Day
"Then the archers shot arrows at your servants from the wall, and some of the king's men died. Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead." 2 Samuel 11:24 NIV
Uriah the Hittite, the husband of Bathesheba, died in battle because of the sin of David. He died an honorable death, but a senseless one indeed.
Today, as we honor in America those who have died protecting our nation, I am reminded that all war is the result of sin. If not for the fallen nature of mankind, no army in the world would ever be necessary.
Please do not misunderstand that statement. I am not an anti-war protestor. There are certainly times when war is necessary. I am thankful for the freedom I have to share the gospel over this Internet. I am thankful for the rights my children had to a public education, and for the ability to gather with others to stand and pray on the steps of our city hall. I know that no freedom I have exists without the sacrifice of so many. I know that c ountless men and women gave their lives so that you and I might experience peace.
But I am also keenly aware that God�s plan was certainly not that His children would ever need to go to war. God�s perfect Creation was designed so that you and I might live together in harmony. In the Garden, when sin entered into the hearts of man, the stage was set for battle between men. Lines were drawn, territories were established, and the world was a different place than God had designed.
Without sin in the heart of David, Uriah would not have been on the front lines of war. Without sin, no battle in the history of man would have ever been fought. The world is much different than God had planned, because of sin.
Today, however, let us be thankful as we remember those who give their lives, so that even in a fallen world, you and I might live in freedom.
