For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life. Leviticus 17:11 NIV

Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. Exodus 12:3 NIV

Without sounding irreverent, I want us to look at a bloody subject this week. I hope that will not bother the weak stomached among us, but if we are really going to understand our Christian belief, we cannot get away without discussing blood. Perhaps today�s Scriptures, and the ones to follow this week, will help put it all into perspective. When you understand the purpose of blood, it really is not so bad. In fact, it is actually very good!

Blood. The Bible talks a lot about it. A children�s dictionary defines blood as: the red liquid that is pumped through your body by your heart. Going to a more adult diction ary I found a couple of definitions. One being: A fluid consisting of plasma, blood cells and platelets, that is circulated by the heart through the vertebrate vascular system, carrying oxygen and nutrients to and waste products away from all body tissue. The next definition simply says: A vital or life-giving substance. I think you get the idea. Blood is an essential element of our life.

It makes sense then that blood would be considered important to God as well. God decided, when He designed our bodies, that blood would be the substance to bring life to our bodies. Is it any wonder, then, that, since blood is necessary for life, that God accepted the sacrifice of shed blood, for the remission of sin, which if unredeemed, would bring an end to life? (The wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23)

So, the precedent was set, the Old Testament followers of God were called to sacrifice a life, shedding its blood, and this was an acceptable temporary payment for sin. Tomorr ow we will look further at the shedding of blood for the remission of sin. For today, praise God that He at least allowed something to deal with our sin debt!

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all
of you, I always pray with joy because of ... (Philippians 1:3-5
TNIV).

I need to make a confession: I despise those horrible automated voice
mail systems everybody seems to have. I prefer to deal with people over
voice recorders and presume that anybody trying to reach the people
where I work feel the same way. Where I work, though, we have one too.

Have you ever journeyed into the call processing nightmare? What a
silly question! Of course you have. "If you are calling about x, press
1; if you are calling about y, press 2; and on and on and on." Some
systems are easier and quicker to negotiate than others. But, I still
prefer people. And I typically try to bypass the numbered options by
hitting "0" in hopes of being connected to a "customer-service
representative" rather than wade through the tree of options in order
to leave a message.

There was once a time -- believe it or not -- when companies actually
had warm-blooded people on their payrolls whose job it was to help
customers. Now it's more likely that customer service is a department
staffed by recorders rather than a person who will invest time
listening and responding to your needs.

Service is an attitude, not a department.

It even happens at church. Did you hear the one about the fellow who
walked into First Suburban Church wearing an expensive suit and a
baseball cap? After he sat down, an usher walked up discretely,
introduced himself, and said, "Pardon me, but we don't wear hats in the
sanctuary." The well-dressed man nodded -- and left the cap in place. A
few minutes later, a deacon repeated the process -- with the same
outcome. Then, just before the service began, the pastor came, smiled,
and shook his hand. "Sir, we are pleased to have you with us," he said.
"But we respectfully ask that you remove your cap during worship." "Of
course!" he replied and took it off. "It's just that I have attended
this church for three-and-a-half years and haven't met a soul. Today, I
wore a dirty baseball cap and met the head usher, a deacon, and now the
pastor." I hope that story is pure fiction. My fear is that it is not.

If you value human contact and personal service, take note of and
appreciate it when you receive it. Don't treat someone who serves you
well with indifference or arrogance. Thank the person. Tell the
manager. If appropriate, tip. Service is an attitude, not a department.
Everyone in an organization, family, company, or church is responsible
for treating others with respect.

People sense their value when we affirm them with personal attention.

MORNING:

"Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee."
-- Psalms 55:22

Care, even though exercised upon legitimate objects, if carried to
excess, has in it the nature of sin. The precept to avoid anxious care
is earnestly inculcated by our Saviour, again and again; it is
reiterated by the apostles; and it is one which cannot be neglected
without involving transgression: for the very essence of anxious care
is the imagining that we are wiser than God, and the thrusting
ourselves into his place to do for him that which he has undertaken to
do for us. We attempt to think of that which we fancy he will forget;
we labour to take upon ourselves our weary burden, as if he were unable
or unwilling to take it for us. Now this disobedience to his plain
precept, this unbelief in his Word, this presumption in intruding upon
his province, is all sinful. Yet more than this, anxious care often
leads to acts of sin. He who cannot calmly leave his affairs in God's
hand, but will carry his own burden, is very likely to be tempted to
use wrong means to help himself. This sin leads to a forsaking of God
as our counsellor, and resorting instead to human wisdom. This is going
to the "broken cistern" instead of to the "fountain;" a sin which was
laid against Israel of old. Anxiety makes us doubt God's
lovingkindness, and thus our love to him grows cold; we feel mistrust,
and thus grieve the Spirit of God, so that our prayers become hindered,
our consistent example marred, and our life one of self-seeking. Thus
want of confidence in God leads us to wander far from him; but if
through simple faith in his promise, we cast each burden as it comes
upon him, and are "careful for nothing" because he undertakes to care
for us, it will keep us close to him, and strengthen us against much
temptation. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed
on thee, because he trusteth in thee."

EVENING:

"Continue in the faith."

Perseverance is the badge of true saints. The Christian life is not a
beginning only in the ways of God, but also a continuance in the same
as long as life lasts. It is with a Christian as it was with the great
Napoleon: he said, "Conquest has made me what I am, and conquest must
maintain me." So, under God, dear brother in the Lord, conquest has
made you what you are, and conquest must sustain you. Your motto must
be, "Excelsior." He only is a true conqueror, and shall be crowned at
the last, who continueth till war's trumpet is blown no more.
Perseverance is, therefore, the target of all our spiritual enemies.
The world does not object to your being a Christian for a time, if she
can but tempt you to cease your pilgrimage, and settle down to buy and
sell with her in Vanity Fair. The flesh will seek to ensnare you, and
to prevent your pressing on to glory. "It is weary work being a
pilgrim; come, give it up. Am I always to be mortified? Am I never to
be indulged? Give me at least a furlough from this constant warfare."
Satan will make many a fierce attack on your perseverance; it will be
the mark for all his arrows. He will strive to hinder you in service:
he will insinuate that you are doing no good; and that you want rest.
He will endeavour to make you weary of suffering, he will whisper,
"Curse God, and die." Or he will attack your steadfastness: "What is
the good of being so zealous? Be quiet like the rest; sleep as do
others, and let your lamp go out as the other virgins do." Or he will
assail your doctrinal sentiments: "Why do you hold to these
denominational creeds? Sensible men are getting more liberal; they are
removing the old landmarks: fall in with the times." Wear your shield,
Christian, therefore, close upon your armour, and cry mightily unto
God, that by his Spirit you may endure to the end.

THINK AS JESUS TAUGHT

We think rightly or wrongly about prayer according to the conception
we have in our minds of prayer. If we think of prayer as the breath
in our lungs and the blood from our hearts, we think rightly. The
blood flows ceaselessly, and breathing continues ceaselessly; we are
not conscious of it, but it is always going on. We are not always
conscious of Jesus keeping us in perfect joint with God, but if we
are obeying Him, He always is. Prayer is not an exercise, it is the
life. Beware of anything that stops [spontaneous] prayer. "Pray
without ceasing," keep the childlike habit of [spontanesous] prayer
in your heart to God all the time.

Jesus never mentioned unanswered prayer, He had the boundless
certainty that prayer is always answered. Have we by the Spirit the
unspeakable certainty that Jesus had about prayer, or do we think of
the times when God does not seem to have answered prayer? "Every one
that asketh receiveth." We say - "But..., but . . ." God answers
prayer in the best way, not sometimes, but every time, although the
immediate manifestation of the answer in the domain in which we want
it may not always follow. Do we expect God to answer prayer?

The danger with us is that we want to water down the things that
Jesus says and make them mean something in accordance with common
sense; if it were only common sense, it was not worth while for Him
to say it. The things Jesus says about prayer are supernatural
revelations.

The Father's Choice

Then Jesus said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and
earth. I praise you because you have hidden these things from
the wise and smart people. But you have shown these things to
people that are like little children. Yes, Father, you did
this because this is what you really wanted to do."

KEY THOUGHT:
God has always despised arrogance. Yet it is the repeated sin of his
creatures. Satan's rebellion and Adam and Eve's sin have their source
in the arrogance of being rivals to God. We should not be surprised
that God's will, his choice, his delight, is to hide his plan from the
arrogant religious leaders of the day and reveal them to common
everyday people. Only those who are willing to receive the Kingdom like
children will find it -- not because God wants simpletons, but because
those who are wise in their own eyes are often the most abusive and
ignorant of all.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O holy and majestic Father, I want my heart to not only be pure from
immorality but also from the stain of arrogance and pride. Your ways
are so far beyond my own, so guard my heart from the presumption of
thinking I know all of your ways or confining you to my own little
notions of your glory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

"'Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and
unsearchable things you do not know.'"

THOUGHT:
This was originally spoken to Jeremiah about the fate of
Jerusalem. However, this promise is true in special ways for us as
well. God wants us to call to him. God often waits for us to ask
before he blesses us with what he longs to give us. Yet we lack the
ability to comprehend and receive all the great truth about God. He
is simply too big and too glorious for us to fully comprehend him
and his grace.

PRAYER:
Father and Almighty God, you are breath-taking and beyond my
ability to comprehend. Dear Father, please bewilder the world by
coming on a day everyone least expects it. I do long to know you
better, dear Father. In Jesus' name. Amen.
