MORNING:

"Sing forth the honour of his name, make his praise glorious."
-- Psalms 66:2

It is not left to our own option whether we shall praise God or not.
Praise is God's most righteous due, and every Christian, as the
recipient of his grace, is bound to praise God from day to day. It is
true we have no authoritative rubric for daily praise; we have no
commandment prescribing certain hours of song and thanksgiving: but the
law written upon the heart teaches us that it is right to praise God;
and the unwritten mandate comes to us with as much force as if it had
been recorded on the tables of stone, or handed to us from the top of
thundering Sinai. Yes, it is the Christian's duty to praise God. It is
not only a pleasurable exercise, but it is the absolute obligation of
his life. Think not ye who are always mourning, that ye are guiltless
in this respect, or imagine that ye can discharge your duty to your God
without songs of praise. You are bound by the bonds of his love to
bless his name so long as you live, and his praise should continually
be in your mouth, for you are blessed, in order that you may bless him;
"this people have I formed for myself, they shall show forth my
praise"; and if you do not praise God, you are not bringing forth the
fruit which he, as the Divine Husbandman, has a right to expect at your
hands. Let not your harp then hang upon the willows, but take it down,
and strive, with a grateful heart, to bring forth its loudest music.
Arise and chant his praise. With every morning's dawn, lift up your
notes of thanksgiving, and let every setting sun be followed with your
song. Girdle the earth with your praises; surround it with an
atmosphere of melody, and God himself will hearken from heaven and
accept your music.

"E'en so I love thee, and will love,
And in thy praise will sing,
Because thou art my loving God,
And my redeeming King."

EVENING:

"A living dog is better than a dead lion."
-- Ecclesiastes 9:4

Life is a precious thing, and in its humblest form it is superior to
death. This truth is eminently certain in spiritual things. It is
better to be the least in the kingdom of heaven than the greatest out
of it. The lowest degree of grace is superior to the noblest
development of unregenerate nature. Where the Holy Ghost implants
divine life in the soul, there is a precious deposit which none of the
refinements of education can equal. The thief on the cross excels
Caesar on his throne; Lazarus among the dogs is better than Cicero
among the senators; and the most unlettered Christian is in the sight
of God superior to Plato. Life is the badge of nobility in the realm of
spiritual things, and men without it are only coarser or finer
specimens of the same lifeless material, needing to be quickened, for
they are dead in trespasses and sins.

A living, loving, gospel sermon, however unlearned in matter and
uncouth in style, is better than the finest discourse devoid of unction
and power. A living dog keeps better watch than a dead lion, and is of
more service to his master; and so the poorest spiritual preacher is
infinitely to be preferred to the exquisite orator who has no wisdom
but that of words, no energy but that of sound. The like holds good of
our prayers and other religious exercises; if we are quickened in them
by the Holy Spirit, they are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ,
though we may think them to be worthless things; while our grand
performances in which our hearts were absent, like dead lions, are mere
carrion in the sight of the living God. O for living groans, living
sighs, living despondencies, rather than lifeless songs and dead calms.
Better anything than death. The snarlings of the dog of hell will at
least keep us awake, but dead faith and dead profession, what greater
curses can a man have? Quicken us, quicken us, O Lord!

MORNING:

"Behold, if the leprosy have covered all his flesh, he shall
pronounce him clean that hath the plague."
-- Leviticus 13:13

Strange enough this regulation appears, yet there was wisdom in it, for
the throwing out of the disease proved that the constitution was sound.
This morning it may be well for us to see the typical teaching of so
singular a rule. We, too, are lepers, and may read the law of the leper
as applicable to ourselves. When a man sees himself to be altogether
lost and ruined, covered all over with the defilement of sin, and no
part free from pollution; when he disclaims all righteousness of his
own, and pleads guilty before the Lord, then is he clean through the
blood of Jesus, and the grace of God. Hidden, unfelt, unconfessed
iniquity is the true leprosy, but when sin is seen and felt it has
received its death blow, and the Lord looks with eyes of mercy upon the
soul afflicted with it. Nothing is more deadly than self-righteousness,
or more hopeful than contrition. We must confess that we are "nothing
else but sin," for no confession short of this will be the whole truth,
and if the Holy Spirit be at work with us, convincing us of sin, there
will be no difficulty about making such an acknowledgment-it will
spring spontaneously from our lips. What comfort does the text afford
to those under a deep sense of sin! Sin mourned and confessed, however
black and foul, shall never shut a man out from the Lord Jesus.
Whosoever cometh unto him, he will in no wise cast out. Though
dishonest as the thief, though unchaste as the woman who was a sinner,
though fierce as Saul of Tarsus, though cruel as Manasseh, though
rebellious as the prodigal, the great heart of love will look upon the
man who feels himself to have no soundness in him, and will pronounce
him clean, when he trusts in Jesus crucified. Come to him, then, poor
heavy-laden sinner,

Come needy, come guilty, come loathsome and bare;
You can't come too filthy-come just as you are.

EVENING:

"I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not
let him go."
-- Song of Solomon 3:4

Does Christ receive us when we come to him, notwithstanding all our
past sinfulness? Does he never chide us for having tried all other
refuges first? And is there none on earth like him? Is he the best of
all the good, the fairest of all the fair? Oh, then let us praise him!
Daughters of Jerusalem, extol him with timbrel and harp! Down with your
idols, up with the Lord Jesus. Now let the standards of pomp and pride
be trampled under foot, but let the cross of Jesus, which the world
frowns and scoffs at, be lifted on high. O for a throne of ivory for
our King Solomon! Let him be set on high for ever, and let my soul sit
at his footstool, and kiss his feet, and wash them with my tears. Oh,
how precious is Christ! How can it be that I have thought so little of
him? How is it I can go abroad for joy or comfort when he is so full,
so rich, so satisfying. Fellow believer, make a covenant with thine
heart that thou wilt never depart from him, and ask thy Lord to ratify
it. Bid him set thee as a signet upon his finger, and as a bracelet
upon his arm. Ask him to bind thee about him, as the bride decketh
herself with ornaments, and as the bridegroom putteth on his jewels. I
would live in Christ's heart; in the clefts of that rock my soul would
eternally abide. The sparrow hath made a house, and the swallow a nest
for herself where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of
hosts, my King and my God; and so too would I make my nest, my home, in
thee, and never from thee may the soul of thy turtle dove go forth
again, but may I nestle close to thee, O Jesus, my true and only rest.

"When my precious Lord I find,
All my ardent passions glow;
Him with cords of love I bind,
Hold and will not let him go."

The Father and the Prodigal Son (2)

The Father and the Prodigal Son (2)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(RcV) Luke 15:21 And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned
against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be
called your son. (22) But the father said to his slaves, Bring
out quickly the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on
his hand and sandals on his feet. (23) And bring the fattened
calf; slaughter it, and let us eat and be merry, (24) Because
this son of mine was dead and lives again; he was lost and has
been found. And they began to be merry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Part 2 of 2]
When the son returned home, he was a poor beggar dressed in
rags. But after the best robe was put on him, he was covered
with a splendid garment prepared especially for him. With this
robe on, he was qualified to match his father. The best robe
put on the son is a full type of Christ as our righteousness in
whom we are justified before God. Hence, putting the best robe
on the returned prodigal signifies justification in Christ. As
those who have Christ as the best robe, we are justified by
God.

The father also told the slaves to put a ring on his son's
hand. I believe this was a gold ring. This ring signifies the
sealing Spirit given to a returned sinner (Eph. 1:13). This
ring is a sign that a repentant sinner receives something
divine, the very Spirit of God Himself. The ring signifying the
sealing Spirit indicates that the returned prodigal belongs to
the Father. It also indicates that whatever the Father has as
an inheritance belongs to the returned son.

In 15:22 we see that sandals were also put on the feet of the
returned son. Sandals separate one's feet from the dirt of the
earth and strengthen him for walking. The sandals put on the
son's feet signify that God's salvation separates us from the
world and unto Him so that we may then take His way.

With the robe, the ring, and the sandals the returned one was
fully clothed and adorned. This means that he was fully
justified and qualified and could be accepted into the father's
house. Then the father told the slaves to bring the fattened
calf and slaughter it for their enjoyment. Thus far, we see
Christ as righteousness to justify a repentant sinner
outwardly, the Spirit as the seal, and the power of God's
salvation separating a repentant sinner from the world. Now we
see that Christ is also the fattened calf to fill us with the
divine life for our enjoyment. The father, the returned son,
and all the others could enjoy feasting on this fattened calf.
So "they began to be merry."

Mustard Seed Thought: Having to Wait

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

Genesis 22:4 NIV

Why did God pick a mountain three days away? Think about it. Abraham was called to sacrifice his only son Isaac on an altar. God told him to go to the mountain He would show Abraham. We saw yesterday that perhaps Abraham got up early because he hadn't had such a great night of sleep. He chopped his own wood, perhaps to take his mind off of the journey ahead. Can you see how real this Abraham character is? He was a real person with real struggles.

Now, we see that the mountain God chose was three days away. What, were there no mountains close by? Could Abraham not have built an altar right where he was? Wouldn't that have sufficed? No, apparently not! God took Abraham on a journey that we know lasted three days. Actually it could have taken longer, because the Scripture says he saw the mountain in three days. It doesn't say how long the journey continued after that.

So, why the long journey? Quite frankly, I think one of the reasons might have been that God wanted to make sure Abraham wouldn't change his mind. He left promptly on the journey after hearing from God, but during the three days, don't you think he got a bit nervous. Each time he looked at his son, he must have sensed his stomach turn into knots. It must have been very tempting to turn around and go home. But, he stayed the course, and he passed the test!

It is easy to show faith on Sunday morning! It's easy to make commitments to God standing at the altar of a church. Let Monday mornings come and let's see how strong our commitment is! Let the struggles of life go into the third day and beyond and we'll see how devoted to God we remain! God didn't just test Abraham's commitment, He tested Abraham's commitment to the commitment!

How committed to obeying God are you? Is that what you will say tomorrow, and the next day, and the next?

The Father and the Prodigal Son (1)

The Father and the Prodigal Son (1)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 15:11 And He said, A certain man had two sons. (12) And
the younger of them said to the father, Father, give me the
share of the estate that falls to me. And he distributed to
them his living. (13) And not many days after, the younger son,
having gathered everything together, went abroad to a distant
country and there squandered his estate by living dissolutely.
(14) And when he had spent all, a severe famine occurred
throughout that country, and he began to be in want. (15) And
he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that
country; and he sent him into his fields to feed hogs. (16) And
he longed to be satisfied with the carob pods which the hogs
were eating, and no one gave him anything. (17) But when he
came to himself, he said, How many of my father's hired
servants abound in bread, but I am perishing here in famine!
(18) I will rise up and go to my father, and I will say to him,
Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. (19) I am
no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of
your hired servants. (20) And he rose up and came to his own
father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw
him and was moved with compassion, and he ran and fell on his
neck and kissed him affectionately.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Part 1 of 2]
In verse 19 we see that the prodigal intended to say to his
father, "I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me
as one of your hired servants." This indicates that the
prodigal son did not know the Father's love. A fallen sinner
having once repented always thinks of working for God or
serving God to obtain His favor, not knowing that this thought
is against God's love and grace and is an insult to His heart
and intent. The father's seeing the son did not happen by
chance. Rather, the father went out of the home to look for his
prodigal's return. When the father saw his son, he ran to him
and fell on his neck and kissed him affectionately. This
indicates that God the Father runs to receive a returning
sinner. What eagerness this shows! The father's falling on his
son's neck and kissing him affectionately shows a warm and
loving reception.

If we read carefully the parable of the loving father, we shall
see that while the prodigal son was still squandering the
father's riches, the father was waiting for him to come back.
When the son came to himself and decided to go to his father,
he prepared what he would say to him: "Father, I have sinned
against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be
called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants" (15:18-
19). What would you have said to the father if you had been the
prodigal son in this parable? Perhaps you would have said to
yourself, "...I feel ashamed and foolish for squandering
everything my father gave me. I cannot bear to recall the way I
have been living. I know for sure that my father will not be
outside waiting for me...."

To the prodigal son's great surprise, "While he was still a
long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion;
and he ran and fell on his neck and kissed him affectionately"
(v. 20). Perhaps the prodigal said to himself, "This is like a
dream! I didn't call out or knock on the door, but my father
comes running to me. Now he is embracing me and kissing me!"
[Continued tomorrow]

Mustard Seed Thought: Facing Storms

He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure. Isaiah 33:6 NIV

I fully intend to memorize today's verse. There are times in my life where I need to remember that God is my foundation. Times when I need to know He is my rich store of wisdom and knowledge.

Does your life ever seem to be on shifting sand? You don't know which way to turn next? The struggles of life have you captivated with fear, if you allow them to control your thoughts?

When my world is caving in around me, I need to know that my foundation is secure. Everything may not be going the way I want it to at a particular moment, but my foundation is fixed! I am not about to fall. I need to know that the Truth found only in Christ is the only wisdom and knowledge I need to succeed.

Once while my family was vacationing in Florida we encountered fairly severe weather. A hurricane, which never fully developed, was forecasted to hit our beach. People all around us were evacuating, but because it was the start of our vacation, we decided to stay. I knew as a father, it was my job to make a wise decision. I remember someone in our condo unit saying that the building we were in was over 25 years old. It had withstood stronger storms than this one. It had a strong foundation. With this practical information, and with my faith in God, I had the wisdom and knowledge I needed, and I was trusting in God to care for us through the storm. We would be okay.

When you and I face storms in life, we need to know that we are standing on solid ground. We have a sure foundation. That fact, provided to us by our faith in God, through His Son Jesus Christ, according to today's scripture, should be our treasure in life!

Place your faith in God as a sure foundation, and you will have a treasure; a treasure of peace, that the storms of life can never blow away!

Mustard Seed Thought : Strength

September 26, 2007.

Strength

O LORD, be gracious to us; we long for You. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress. Isaiah 33:2 NIV

Tough day ahead? How are you going to get through it? Why not let God be your strength today?

Sometimes my days overwhelm me. When I was younger, no one could have expressed to me the pressure that comes from life. In my little world I am expected to be a good husband, a good father, a good son, a good employer, a good community leader, a good pastor, a good radio co-host, a good writer, and a good friend. In the middle of all of that activity, I am required to be a good child of God; consistently seeking Him and daily growing to be more like Christ. Whew! I'm tired just typing the list and I left some of it out!

You're no different than me. You may have different responsibilities, but you have something that you need to do and someone you are accountable to everyday. All these demands can take a lot out of a person.

I don't know how to handle the demands of life apart from God's strength! I just don't! If I fail to give Him the burdens and opportunities of life, I will be a failure! It is just that simple! I know that intellectually, even spiritually, but carrying it out on a daily basis is sometimes a different story. There is always a tendency in my heart to want to fix things! To set back and let God work through me often conflicts with my "A type" personality.

Paul, the great Epistle writer of the New Testament, said it best when he reminded us that he "dies daily". Every morning, before we even get out of bed, we must pause for a minute, confess our insufficiency before the Lord, and ask Him to be our Source and Strength for the day. Then we start over the next day!

The Christian life is not to be lived alone. Praise God we have His presence in our life through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our obligation is to let His will be done in our lives, as He provides the strength for everyday living. May we do so today!
