Today's Verse : Ephesians 4:22

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 2, 2009

VERSE:
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put
off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful
desires; ....
-- Ephesians 4:22
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+4:22

THOUGHT:
That's a tough one, isn't it?! We each surrendered our heart to
God and our old self was crucified with Christ when we became
Christians (cf. Rom. 6:6). Jesus reminds us that this surrender is
something each of us should do daily (cf. Luke 9:23). We need to
put the old sinful life aside every day and choose to live for
Jesus in response to God's grace. As we begin this new year, let's
make it our spiritual habit to consciously offer ourselves to the
lordship of Jesus each day.

PRAYER:
Holy and Almighty LORD, my Father in heaven, I want to honor you
and ignore the temptations of Satan. Please empower me with your
Spirit and capture my heart with your grace as I seek to live each
day for you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: New Trust 4

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
New Trust 4
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
I trust in the LORD for protection. So why do you say to me, Fly to the mountains for safety! Psalm 11:1 NLT

David, the Psalmist, probably had many people who thought he was crazy. We know his brothers and others thought he was for trying to fight Goliath alone. (1 Samuel 17) Goliath had scared off the entire army of Saul. No one wanted to fight him. David, merely a boy, was willing to fight for his nation seemingly single-handed. We know the whole story though. David was not alone. He had the Lord on his side. As David told Saul, The LORD who saved me from the claws of the lion and the bear will save me from this Philistine!" (1 Sam 17:37) David put the trust for his protection in the God of the Bible.

Who is protecting you? To whom are you looking for strength? Do you expect your bank account to protect you? Do you think if your nation is strong enough you will be safe? Will there ever be adequate police protection so that you will never have to fear thos e who might cause harm to you?

I never want to claim perfection in my spiritual life. I am not sure I am as brave as David was or as bold with my trust in God. I have a security system in my home. I keep my doors and windows locked. I make sure I know where my children are most times. I am trying to be smart and responsible in my role to protect my family, as I think I should be. Ultimately, however, I need to realize that God is the protector of my home and all that is precious to me!

Are you finding yourself more and more worried about how you will protect your family, whether it is financial issues, physical safety, or in their emotional health? To be a good parent I think we should do all we can, relying on Gods help, to protect our family. In the end, however, God alone can keep my family safe.

You and I must continue to place our trust in the Living God of the Bible.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

What a Way to Start the New Year!, by Russ Lawson

"What a way to start the New Year!" writes one frustrated lady!

My New Year started this way. My husband was at work and I took the
dog out for her morning walk, locking the door to the house as I
usually do. I intended on leaving for a visit to my sister's house
in a nearby town in just a short while and noticed that there was
frost on the windshield of the car. I thought to myself, "I'll just
start it up and let the engine warm and defrost the windows while
I'm out here." Doing that, I exited the car and shut the door and
heard the automatic door locks activate and instantly knew I had
made a mistake. The door to the house was locked, my car was
running and locked and the dog and I stood outside looking at the
keys in the car ignition.

One thing I did have with me was my cell phone. In a panic I called
my husband at his work place (about 35 miles away) and he said he
would start home. I called my sister and she reminded me she had a
key to the house and could bring it up. About that time my husband
called back and reminded me that we had an emergency house key
hidden in the garage and that he had made me an emergency car key
to keep in my purse a couple of years before. So in short order I
was in the house, retrieved the car key and all things were back to
normal, but what a way to start a New Year! (Name withheld to
protect my wife's reputation -- Russ Lawson!).

As I thought about this incident I thought how often we have feelings
of panic when God has already made preparations to keep us safe. How
"Happy" can the New Year or any part of any year be if we are
constantly in doubt and perhaps even in panic about what will happen
next?

We don't know what good things God has in store!

A lot of scriptures run through my mind at times like this, but one
passage always seems to come to the top:

And we know that all things work together for good to them that
love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose (Romans
8:28 KJV).

We don't know what good things God has in store for us in this coming
year, but we do need to learn to trust in the fact that he has a plan
and a purpose for our lives.

May each of us learn to have a truly believing faith in the creator and
sustainer of us all as we face the New Year!

Morning & Evening -- Joshua 5:12 and Song of Solomon 1:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, January 1, 2009

MORNING:

"They did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year."
-- Joshua 5:12

Israel's weary wanderings were all over, and the promised rest was
attained. No more moving tents, fiery serpents, fierce Amalekites, and
howling wildernesses: they came to the land which flowed with milk and
honey, and they ate the old corn of the land. Perhaps this year,
beloved Christian reader, this may be thy case or mine. Joyful is the
prospect, and if faith be in active exercise, it will yield unalloyed
delight. To be with Jesus in the rest which remaineth for the people of
God, is a cheering hope indeed, and to expect this glory so soon is a
double bliss. Unbelief shudders at the Jordan which still rolls between
us and the goodly land, but let us rest assured that we have already
experienced more ills than death at its worst can cause us. Let us
banish every fearful thought, and rejoice with exceeding great joy, in
the prospect that this year we shall begin to be "for ever with the
Lord."

A part of the host will this year tarry on earth, to do service for
their Lord. If this should fall to our lot, there is no reason why the
New Year's text should not still be true. "We who have believed do
enter into rest." The Holy Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance; he
gives us "glory begun below." In heaven they are secure, and so are we
preserve in Christ Jesus; there they triumph over their enemies, and we
have victories too. Celestial spirits enjoy communion with their Lord,
and this is not denied to us; they rest in his love, and we have
perfect peace in him: they hymn his praise, and it is our privilege to
bless him too. We will this year gather celestial fruits on earthly
ground, where faith and hope have made the desert like the garden of
the Lord. Man did eat angels' food of old, and why not now? O for grace
to feed on Jesus, and so to eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan this
year!

EVENING:

"We will be glad and rejoice in thee."
-- Song of Solomon 1:4

We will be glad and rejoice in thee. We will not open the gates of the
year to the dolorous notes of the sackbut, but to the sweet strains of
the harp of joy, and the high sounding cymbals of gladness. "O come,
let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise unto the rock of
our salvation." We, the called and faithful and chosen, we will drive
away our griefs, and set up our banners of confidence in the name of
God. Let others lament over their troubles, we who have the sweetening
tree to cast into Marah's bitter pool, with joy will magnify the Lord.
Eternal Spirit, our effectual Comforter, we who are the temples in
which thou dwellest, will never cease from adoring and blessing the
name of Jesus. We WILL, we are resolved about it, Jesus must have the
crown of our heart's delight; we will not dishonour our Bridegroom by
mourning in his presence. We are ordained to be the minstrels of the
skies, let us rehearse our everlasting anthem before we sing it in the
halls of the New Jerusalem. We will BE GLAD AND REJOICE: two words with
one sense, double joy, blessedness upon blessedness. Need there be any
limit to our rejoicing in the Lord even now? Do not men of grace find
their Lord to be camphire and spikenard, calamus and cinnamon even now,
and what better fragrance have they in heaven itself? We will be glad
and rejoice IN THEE. That last word is the meat in the dish, the kernel
of the nut, the soul of the text. What heavens are laid up in Jesus!
What rivers of infinite bliss have their source, aye, and every drop of
their fulness in him! Since, O sweet Lord Jesus, thou art the present
portion of thy people, favour us this year with such a sense of thy
preciousness, that from its first to its last day we may be glad and
rejoice in thee. Let January open with joy in the Lord, and December
close with gladness in Jesus.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Let Us Keep To The Point"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 1, 2009

LET US KEEP TO THE POINT

My eager desire and hope being that I may never feel
ashamed, but that now as ever I may do honour to Christ
in my own person by fearless courage.

Philippians 1:20
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=php+1:20&sr=1

My Utmost for His Highest. "My eager desire and hope being that I may
never feel ashamed." We shall all feel very much ashamed if we do not
yield to Jesus on the point He has asked us to yield to Him. Paul
says - "My determination is to be my utmost for His Highest." To get
there is a question of will, not of debate nor of reasoning, but a
surrender of will, an absolute and irrevocable surrender on that
point. An overweening consideration for ourselves is the thing that
keeps us from that decision, though we put it that we are considering
others. When we consider what it will cost others if we obey the call
of Jesus, we tell God He does not know what our obedience will mean.
Keep to the point; He does know. Shut out every other consideration
and keep yourself before God for this one thing only - My Utmost for
His Highest. I am determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him
and for Him alone.

My Undeterredness for His Holiness. "Whether that means life or
death, no matter!" (v.21.) Paul is determined that nothing shall
deter him from doing exactly what God wants. God's order has to work
up to a crisis in our lives because we will not heed the gentler way.
He brings us to the place where He asks us to be our utmost for Him,
and we begin to debate; then He produces a providential crisis where
we have to decide - for or against, and from that point the "Great
Divide" begins.

If the crisis has come to you on any line, surrender your will to Him
absolutely and irrevocably.

GOOD NEWS FOR PLANET EARTH

Romans 1:1-4
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+1:1-4

Dear Father, who commissioned the Good News to earth,

Thank you for the Good News for planet Earth which you promised
through your prophets in the Holy Scriptures.

We love you for giving us this Good News about your Son, who,
though he was descended from King David according to the flesh, was
designated your Son, the Son of God in power according to the
Spirit of holiness, by his resurrection from the dead.

We exult in thanksgiving for Jesus Christ, holder of all
authority, in whose name we come. Amen.

God's Promise Fulfilled

This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a
descendant of King David and of Abraham ...

-- 1:1 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus is God keeping his promises. This will be one of Matthew's
continuing themes -- Matthew writes his Gospel to stress the
fulfillment of God's promises to his people. Matthew begins the good
news of Jesus by reminding us that Jesus is not only Jewish, but he
also has a family line that can be traced back to King David and to
Father Abraham. Matthew wants to show his readers that Jesus is the
fulfillment of God's promise to send a Messiah who will bless all
nations. The Apostle Paul, God's chosen missionary to the Gentiles,
said that all of God's promises find their "yes" in Jesus (2 Cor.
1:18-20). He stresses that faith in Jesus is the key to unlocking the
truth of Scripture (2 Tim. 3:15). Let's use this year to find Jesus as
we have never found him before!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and faithful God, thank you for keeping your promises and sending
Jesus. Thank you for taking care of your people Israel through their
long and often difficult history. Your faithfulness to your Word gives
me assurance that you will send Jesus back to bring victory to all of
your people, just as you have promised. In the name of Jesus, son of
Abraham, son of David, and your Son, I pray. Amen.
