=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

It Won't Ever Happen to Us!, by Larry Zinck

The tragedy of thousands and thousands of houses burning in California
causes us to want to reach out to the families who have lost so much so
quickly. (See the recent Heartlight article listing possible ways to
help!) I can't imagine gathering my family together to run for our
lives. One report said that a million people have had to evacuate. A
few of those families have already gone back only to find just a mound
of ashes where they once lived. Dry brush and high winds have created a
seemingly unimaginable catastrophe. Our hearts go out to those so
terribly impacted by these fires.

There is, however, some measure of warning to take from this horrible
disaster. Dan Cray wrote an article in Time Magazine on October 23rd
entitled: "Why Californians Don't Leave." He writes:

In the wake of such natural disasters we are inclined to ask: Why
do people choose to live in hazardous regions in the first place?
As University of California Riverside fire ecologist Richard
Minnich says, "Why are these people living in vegetation which at
times behaves like gasoline? They should know better. Would you
live in gasoline?"

Research indicates that if a threat hasn't happened in our own
community, we tend to think it won't ever happen to us. Massive
earthquakes literally happen every year but since they are often
spaced decades apart in any given region, the vast majority of us
disregard the threat. "People are terrified of the word nuclear,
but the people who live next to a nuclear station are perfectly
content with it. People become much less frightened when something
hasn't blown up in several years." says Psychologist Daniel
Kahneman, who has studied human judgment systems.

[Editor's Note: Please don't take this as blaming people who live in
dangerous places for their own problems. There are very few places that
don't have some kind of danger associated with living there --
tornadoes, hurricanes, avalanches, floods, volcanoes, tsunamis, etc.
The point is that we all become complacent to the dangers around us
because we become accustomed to our environments and forget their
dangers.]

We all tend to believe that the disaster could never happen to us.

I find the same thing to be true here in Rio de Janeiro where I live.
Some people build houses on hillsides where, from time-to-time, rains
cause mudslides that lead to tragedy. Other poor communities spring up
beside canals and rivers ignoring the fact that when torrential summer
rains come they might lose everything. Why do they put themselves at
such risk? Lack of options and the hope that the disaster would never
happen to them.

And isn't this the same feeling that we so often have in regard to our
spiritual lives. Most of us know what could happen, but it is so easy
to put off dealing with it because it will probably not happen in the
immediate future -- not too mention the fact that we too often think it
will never happen to us.

Winds may be blowing the fires of destruction our way!

Friends of ours who come from fine Christian homes and who both deeply
love the Lord are getting a divorce. How could this happen? Where did
they go wrong? I don't know, but there is a very good chance that
somewhere along the line they stopped doing what they needed to do to
maintain a good marriage. It should be obvious to all of us that having
a good marriage requires an investment on our part. We could avoid so
much pain and heartache if we would just stop and consider how
important it is that we work at having a deeper relationship with our
spouse. Neglect fosters an impending disaster. I know brothers and
sisters in Christ who have suffered deeply due to problems with their
children. They never dreamed that they might have to deal with such
situations. Had they foreseen the danger they certainly would have
acted sooner to prevent it. Our list could expand, but you get the
point. The neglect seems minor and we believe the worst could never
happen to us.

The apostle Paul reminded us to think differently! He said, "So, if you
think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!" (1
Corinthians 10:12 TNIV). You and I would be foolish to say that we
could never have a problem with arrogance, drinking, gambling,
materialism, lust, bitterness, worry or any other sin. The devil is
always looking for a foothold or a chink in our armor. And when these
are allowed to take hold, even just a little bit, impending disaster
lurks at the edges of our lives waiting to break loose like wildfire.

We would all be wise to do what Paul said:

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one
gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who
competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get
a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will
last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running
aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I
strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have
preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the
prize. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

Winds may be blowing the fires of destruction our way at this very
moment. We mustn't think it can't happen to us. Let's take the
necessary measures to safeguard ourselves and those we love right away,
before we are left looking at the ashes. At the same time, let's also
be compassionate to those who have lost so much because of their own
disasters and work to reclaim them and help them rebuild their lives!

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy
faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God's love
as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to
eternal life.

Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from
the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the
clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you
before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy -- to
the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority,
through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and
forevermore! Amen.

(Jude 1:20-24)

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 9:1 and Song of Solomon 8:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

MORNING:

"I will praise thee, O Lord."
-- Psalms 9:1

Praise should always follow answered prayer; as the mist of earth's
gratitude rises when the sun of heaven's love warms the ground. Hath
the Lord been gracious to thee, and inclined his ear to the voice of
thy supplication? Then praise him as long as thou livest. Let the ripe
fruit drop upon the fertile soil from which it drew its life. Deny not
a song to him who hath answered thy prayer and given thee the desire of
thy heart. To be silent over God's mercies is to incur the guilt of
ingratitude; it is to act as basely as the nine lepers, who after they
had been cured of their leprosy, returned not to give thanks unto the
healing Lord. To forget to praise God is to refuse to benefit
ourselves; for praise, like prayer, is one great means of promoting the
growth of the spiritual life. It helps to remove our burdens, to excite
our hope, to increase our faith. It is a healthful and invigorating
exercise which quickens the pulse of the believer, and nerves him for
fresh enterprises in his Master's service. To bless God for mercies
received is also the way to benefit our fellow-men; "the humble shall
hear thereof and be glad." Others who have been in like circumstances
shall take comfort if we can say, "Oh! magnify the Lord with me, and
let us exalt his name together; this poor man cried, and the Lord heard
him." Weak hearts will be strengthened, and drooping saints will be
revived as they listen to our "songs of deliverance." Their doubts and
fears will be rebuked, as we teach and admonish one another in psalms
and hymns and spiritual songs. They too shall "sing in the ways of the
Lord," when they hear us magnify his holy name. Praise is the most
heavenly of Christian duties. The angels pray not, but they cease not
to praise both day and night; and the redeemed, clothed in white robes,
with palm-branches in their hands, are never weary of singing the new
song, "Worthy is the Lamb."

EVENING:

"Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to
thy voice: cause me to hear it."
-- Song of Solomon 8:13

My sweet Lord Jesus remembers well the garden of Gethsemane, and
although he has left that garden, he now dwells in the garden of his
church: there he unbosoms himself to those who keep his blessed
company. That voice of love with which he speaks to his beloved is more
musical than the harps of heaven. There is a depth of melodious love
within it which leaves all human music far behind. Ten of thousands on
earth, and millions above, are indulged with its harmonious accents.
Some whom I well know, and whom I greatly envy, are at this moment
hearkening to the beloved voice. O that I were a partaker of their
joys! It is true some of these are poor, others bedridden, and some
near the gates of death, but O my Lord, I would cheerfully starve with
them, pine with them, or die with them, if I might but hear thy voice.
Once I did hear it often, but I have grieved thy Spirit. Return unto me
in compassion, and once again say unto me, "I am thy salvation." No
other voice can content me; I know thy voice, and cannot be deceived by
another, let me hear it, I pray thee. I know not what thou wilt say,
neither do I make any condition, O my Beloved, do but let me hear thee
speak, and if it be a rebuke I will bless thee for it. Perhaps to
cleanse my dull ear may need an operation very grievous to the flesh,
but let it cost what it may I turn not from the one consuming desire,
cause me to hear thy voice. Bore my ear afresh; pierce my ear with thy
harshest notes, only do not permit me to continue deaf to thy calls.
To-night, Lord, grant thine unworthy one his desire, for I am thine,
and thou hast bought me with thy blood. Thou hast opened mine eye to
see thee, and the sight has saved me. Lord, open thou mine ear. I have
read thy heart, now let me hear thy lips.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Faith"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 30, 2007

FAITH

Without faith it is impossible to please Him.

Hebrews 11:6

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=heb+11:6&sr=1

Faith in antagonism to common sense is fanaticism, and common sense
in antagonism to faith is rationalism. The life of faith brings the
two into a right relation. Common sense is not faith, and faith is
not common sense; they stand in the relation of the natural and the
spiritual; of impulse and inspiration. Nothing Jesus Christ ever said
is common sense, it is revelation sense, and it reaches the shores
where common sense fails. Faith must be tried before the reality of
faith is actual. "We know that all things work together for good,"
then no matter what happens, the alchemy of God's providence
transfigures the ideal faith into actual reality. Faith always works
on the personal line, the whole purpose of God being to see that the
ideal faith is made real in His children.

For every detail of the common-sense life, there is a revelation fact
of God whereby we can prove in practical experience what we believe
God to be. Faith is a tremendously active principle which always puts
Jesus Christ first - Lord, Thou hast said so and so (e.g., Matthew
6:33), it looks mad, but I am going to venture on Thy word. To turn
head faith into a personal possession is a fight always, not
sometimes. God brings us into circumstances in order to educate our
faith, because the nature of faith is to make its object real. Until
we know Jesus, God is a mere abstraction, we can not have faith in
Him; but immediately we hear Jesus say - "He that hath seen Me hath
seen the Father," we have something that is real, and faith is
boundless. Faith is the whole man rightly related to God by the power
of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

IMITATING GOD

Ephesians 4:29-5:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+4:29-5:2

Dear Father, worthy of my love and obedience,

Let nothing evil come out of my mouth - only what is good for
building others up. Let whatever I say fit the occasion, that it
may impart grace to those who hear.

Don't let me do anything that would grieve your Holy Spirit within
me, by which I have been sealed for the day of redemption. Help me
get rid of all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander, and
especially anything malicious. Help me to be kind to others,
tenderhearted, and forgiving, even as you have forgiven me in
Christ.

Father, I want to imitate you, as a loving child would imitate a
father.

And may I walk in love, even as Christ loved me and gave himself
up for me, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to you.

In the name of Jesus who sacrificed himself for my sake. Amen.

Failed to Grasp It

Then Jesus talked to the twelve apostles alone. Jesus said to
them, "Listen! We are going to Jerusalem. Everything that God
told the prophets to write about the Son of Man will happen!
His people will turn against him and give him to the
non-Jewish people. The non-Jews will laugh at him, insult
him, and spit on him. They will beat him with whips and then
kill him! But on the third day after his death, he will rise
to life again." The apostles tried to understand this, but
they could not; the meaning was hidden from them.

-- Luke 18:31-34 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
With mere human words, Jesus cannot help them understand. His best
efforts can only give them words to remember and to put into
perspective, for a later time -- a time after he has been crucified and
has been raised from the dead. Jesus' destiny in Jerusalem was simply
incomprehensible to them. They had seen the good he had done. They had
experienced his life-changing presence first hand. They believed him to
be the Messiah. How could God's Messiah be crucified? How could he be
executed for the deeds of kindness he had performed and the words of
truth he had spoken? We, on the other hand, must grasp this truth.
Jesus is going to Jerusalem knowing full well that he will be
persecuted, rejected, and tortured. Yet he goes anyway, to honor God
and to pay the price for our sin. We must not let this loving sacrifice
be hidden from our hearts!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, I thank you for going to the Cross knowing that it was
coming and yet enduring it for the sake of my salvation. To you, O Lord
and Christ, belong all glory, honor, blessing, and praise. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Jesus Style Forgiveness 2

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1Jo 1:9

The Bible promises that if we confess our sins He will forgive us of them. I didn't make that up. I read it. Hopefully if you started this devotional the way I intended you read it to. If we believe the Bible is true, then we have to believe this verse is true.

It is one thing to believe something is true and another to live it out as truth in our life. If you are like me, many times you don't necessarily feel forgiven, even when you have confessed your sin. Why is that?

I believe it's because we are human. We can't fathom all the ways of God. We can't fully realize the concept of forgiveness the way God forgives, because we aren't wired that way ourselves. We may want to forgive seven times seventy (see yesterday's devotional), but as soon as the injury we received comes to our mind, we need to forgive someone all over again.

God forgives completely. He purifies completely. He restores completely. We may not completely understand that, but it doesn't make it untrue.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: If you have a spiritual question, send it to Ron.mustardseed@Christweb.com for a confidential reply.

October 30, 2007

VERSE:
They preached the good news in that city and won a large number
of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch,
strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to
the faith.
-- Acts 14:21-22

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Acts+14:21-22

THOUGHT:
Do you know a new Christian? Paul and Barnabas remind us that it
is difficult becoming a Christian; there are hard times for new
Christians! So let's make sure we don't just share the Gospel with
them. Let's also stand by them, check on them, strengthen them, and
encourage them.

PRAYER:
Loving Father, please be with the new Christians in our church.
Use me to be a source of encouragement to them and strength for
them. May my life always be a positive influence on them and other
new Christians as well. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Eating and Drinking the Lord Being the New Covenant

Eating and Drinking the Lord Being the New Covenant
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 22:19 And He took a loaf and gave thanks, and He broke it
and gave it to them, saying, This is My body which is being
given for you; do this in remembrance of Me. (20) And similarly
the cup after they had dined, saying, This cup is the new
covenant established in My blood, which is being poured out for
you
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
God made a covenant with redeemed Israel in Exodus 24:3-8,
which became the old testament, as a base for Him to deal with
His redeemed people in the dispensation of law. The Man- Savior
came to accomplish God's eternal redemption for God's chosen
people by His death, according to God's will (Heb. 10:7, 9-10),
and with His blood instituted a new covenant, a better covenant
(Heb. 8:6-13), which became the new testament after His
resurrection (Heb. 9:16-17), as a base for God to be one with
His redeemed and regenerated people in the dispensation of
grace. This new covenant replaced the old covenant and
simultaneously changed God's old dispensation to His new
dispensation. The Man-Savior wanted His disciples to know this
and live a life based on it and according to it after His
resurrection.

This new practice of the New Testament is to remember the Man-
Savior by eating the bread, which signifies His body given for
His believers (1 Cor. 11:24), and drinking the cup, which
signifies His blood shed for their sins (Matt. 26:28). The
bread denotes life (John 6:35), the life of God, the eternal
life, and the cup denotes blessing (1 Cor. 10:16), which is God
Himself as their portion (Psa. 16:5). As sinners, their portion
should have been the cup of God's wrath (Rev. 14:10). But the
Man-Savior drank that cup for them (John 18:11), and His
salvation has become their portion, the cup of salvation (Psa.
116:13) that runs over (Psa. 23:5), the content of which is God
as their all- inclusive blessing. Such bread and such a cup are
the constituents of the Man-Savior's supper, which is a table
(1 Cor. 10:21), a feast, set up by Him so that His believers
may remember Him by enjoying Him as such a feast. Thus they
testify of His rich and marvelous salvation to the entire
universe and display His redeeming and life-imparting death (1
Cor. 11:26).
