Today's Verse : 1Timothy 6:18

VERSE:
Command them [the rich] to do good, to be rich in good deeds,
and to be generous and willing to share.
-- 1Timothy 6:18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1Timothy+6:18

THOUGHT:
Generosity is such a wonderful thing -- not just to those on the
receiving end, but also to those who are on the giving end. Those
of us who can read this devotional on a computer via e-mail are
rich by the world's standards, so this passage on being generous
with our blessings is especially applicable. Let this giving-time
of the year be God's opportunity to reawaken in us the need to be
generous with our time, energy, and monetary blessings year round.

PRAYER:
O loving God, you have been so generous with me and blessed me
with so many incredible blessings. Thank you! Stir in my heart an
awareness of the joy of giving. Make my heart more like your own,
generous and gracious. Break down the anxiety and miserliness that
sometimes cloud my vision and keep me from sharing my time, money,
energy, and love as I should. Thank you for showing me how to be
generous in Jesus. I pray this in the name of Jesus, my Savior and
Lord. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Nativity 5

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews. We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." Matthew 2:1-2 NIV

If you recall, we are looking at the nativity scene we have popularized in today's Christmas celebration. First we looked at who wasn't present that first Christmas; now we are looking at those who were there for the birth of our Saviour.

Now, Biblical scholars, before you correct me, yes I know the Magi, or wise men as they are often called, were not actually at the manger scene. They arrived some time after Jesus was in a home; some believe as late as two years after His birth, but at least after He had left the manger. Also, there is no mention of how many Magi there were. There could have been hundreds, but they did bring three gifts, which leads us to place three of these figures in most of our nativity scenes.

The point is this, the Magi didn't miss Christmas! They may have celebrated the birth of Christ a little late, but they showed up to worship Immanuel!

These wise men were most likely astrologers; scientist of their day. They were intelligent, scholarly gentlemen. Quite possibly they had studied the works of Daniel; the great prophet of the Old Testament. They no doubt knew the Saviour would come and knew to watch for the star in Bethlehem. They were prepared to seek the Lord! Best of all, once they found Him, they were ready to worship Him!

It is often said, "Wise Men Still Seek Him". Wise men certainly did that first Christmas, which is why it is so appropriate for them to appear at our nativity scenes. These learned men looked to the future and saw something worth searching for!

They saw the Living Christ! This Christmas the Living Christ is still worth searching for...with everything you've got!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

A Jesus Sign?, by Patrick D. Odum

[Jesus said] "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill
cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a
bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to
everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before
others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father
in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16).

Driving to visit my sister this past week, I came around a curve in her
neighborhood and was confronted by one of her neighbor's Christmas lawn
decorations. Actually, "confronted" doesn't seem quite strong enough to
describe it. "Assaulted" is a little too much, but not entirely
inaccurate. Whatever you want to call it, I nearly swerved the truck I
was driving off the road when I saw it. It was a brightly-lit sign. It
was about as tall as I am and was about ten feet wide. It was sitting
in the front yard lit up for all the world to see. What it said was
pretty simple and just one word: "JESUS."

I wondered how many people had said something not too righteous upon
seeing that sign for the first time. It was that startling. And
honestly, while I appreciated the homeowner's commitment to keeping
Jesus front and center at Christmas, I have to confess that I thought
the sign looked a bit, well, gaudy -- maybe downright tacky. But now
that I think I've gotten over the initial shock of seeing this sign,
and the more I've thought about it, the more I think I kind of like the
big "JESUS" sign.

I can almost guarantee that no one drives past that sign without making
some sort of comment about it. In a neighborhood full of Christmas
lights, robotic reindeer, and 7-foot Santa Claus and snowman
inflatables, everybody notices the "JESUS" sign. Even those who don't
like it can't possibly ignore it. Plus, everyone now knows the
commitments of the people who live in that house. There is no ambiguity
about what they believe.

May Jesus shine brightly in our words and actions.

I know a giant sign in the front yard does not a Christian make.
Obviously, we all would hope that the lifestyles of the people who live
in that house match the "JESUS" sign in their front yard. But nobody in
that neighborhood is wondering what that family is celebrating this
Christmas. It's written in six-foot glowing letters in their front
yard.

One other thing I think you know about those folks. They don't live for
the approval of their neighbors. I wonder if anyone has asked them to
take their "JESUS" sign down. I wonder if anyone has said, "Look, that
thing's kind of an eyesore. Do us a favor and put up a big inflatable
snow globe or glowing candy canes or something." I wonder if anyone has
left an anonymous note or if they're violating some kind of
neighborhood ordinance by having the now famous "JESUS" sign up. At the
very least, I imagine they know that people are talking about the sign,
and that some don't like it. But, these homeowners apparently don't
mind the talk behind their backs, or at least they are not bothered
enough to take it down.

I'm guessing that our neighbors probably don't want us to put a "JESUS"
sign in our front yards -- this season or any season. However,
somewhere along the way, we have to step over the line of our own
comfort and sense of respectability and identify with Jesus in ways
that do reflect our Lord's character and compassion. This is not just
about declaring our allegiance to the Lord, but it's also about sharing
his grace. So may Jesus shine so brightly in our actions and words --
as Jesus put it, in our "good deeds" -- so that we won't need big
"JESUS" signs in our yards for our neighbors to know our reason for the
season and the reason for our hope in any season.

Morning & Evening -- 2 Samuel 23:5 and Ezekiel 16:10

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, December 21, 2007

MORNING:

"Yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant."
-- 2 Samuel 23:5

This covenant is divine in its origin. "HE hath made with me an
everlasting covenant." Oh that great word HE! Stop, my soul. God, the
everlasting Father, has positively made a covenant with thee; yes, that
God who spake the world into existence by a word; he, stooping from his
majesty, takes hold of thy hand and makes a covenant with thee. Is it
not a deed, the stupendous condescension of which might ravish our
hearts for ever if we could really understand it? "HE hath made with me
a covenant." A king has not made a covenant with me-that were somewhat;
but the Prince of the kings of the earth, Shaddai, the Lord
All-sufficient, the Jehovah of ages, the everlasting Elohim, "He hath
made with me an everlasting covenant." But notice, it is particular in
its application. "Yet hath he made with ME an everlasting covenant."
Here lies the sweetness of it to each believer. It is nought for me
that he made peace for the world; I want to know whether he made peace
for me! It is little that he hath made a covenant, I want to know
whether he has made a covenant with me. Blessed is the assurance that
he hath made a covenant with me! If God the Holy Ghost gives me
assurance of this, then his salvation is mine, his heart is mine, he
himself is mine-he is my God.

This covenant is everlasting in its duration. An everlasting covenant
means a covenant which had no beginning, and which shall never, never
end. How sweet amidst all the uncertainties of life, to know that "the
foundation of the Lord standeth sure," and to have God's own promise,
"My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of
my lips." Like dying David, I will sing of this, even though my house
be not so with God as my heart desireth.

EVENING:

"I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with
badgers' skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I
covered thee with silk."
-- Ezekiel 16:10

See with what matchless generosity the Lord provides for his people's
apparel. They are so arrayed that the divine skill is seen producing an
unrivalled broidered work, in which every attribute takes its part and
every divine beauty is revealed. No art like the art displayed in our
salvation, no cunning workmanship like that beheld in the righteousness
of the saints. Justification has engrossed learned pens in all ages of
the church, and will be the theme of admiration in eternity. God has
indeed "curiously wrought it." With all this elaboration there is
mingled utility and durability, comparable to our being shod with
badgers' skins. The animal here meant is unknown, but its skin covered
the tabernacle, and formed one of the finest and strongest leathers
known. The righteousness which is of God by faith endureth for ever,
and he who is shod with this divine preparation will tread the desert
safely, and may even set his foot upon the lion and the adder. Purity
and dignity of our holy vesture are brought out in the fine linen. When
the Lord sanctifies his people, they are clad as priests in pure white;
not the snow itself excels them; they are in the eyes of men and angels
fair to look upon, and even in the Lord's eyes they are without spot.
Meanwhile the royal apparel is delicate and rich as silk. No expense is
spared, no beauty withheld, no daintiness denied.

What, then? Is there no inference from this? Surely there is gratitude
to be felt and joy to be expressed. Come, my heart, refuse not thy
evening hallelujah! Tune thy pipes! Touch thy chords!

"Strangely, my soul, art thou arrayed
By the Great Sacred Three!
In sweetest harmony of praise
Let all thy powers agree."

My Utmost For His Highest : "Experience Or Revelation"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 21, 2007

EXPERIENCE OR REVELATION

We have received ... the spirit which is of God; that we
might know the things that are freely given to us of
God.

1 Corinthians 2:12

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1co+2:12&sr=1

Reality is Redemption, not my experience of Redemption; but
Redemption has no meaning for me until it speaks the language of my
conscious life. When I am born again, the Spirit of God takes me
right out of myself and my experiences, and identifies me with Jesus
Christ. If I am left with my experiences, my experiences have not
been produced by Redemption. The proof that they are produced by
Redemption is that I am led out of myself all the time, I no longer
pay any attention to my experiences as the ground of Reality, but
only to the Reality which produced the experiences. My experiences
are not worth anything unless they keep me at the Source, Jesus
Christ.

If you try to dam up the Holy Spirit in you to produce subjective
experiences, you will find that He will burst all bounds and take you
back again to the historic Christ. Never nourish an experience which
has not God as its Source and faith in God as its result. If you do,
your experience is anti-Christian, no matter what visions you may
have had. Is Jesus Christ Lord of your experiences, or do you try to
lord it over Him? Is any experience dearer to you than your Lord? He
must be Lord over you, and you must not pay attention to any
experience over which He is not Lord. There comes a time when God
will make you impatient with your own experience - I do not care what
I experience; I am sure of Him.

Be ruthless with yourself if you are given to talking about the
experiences you have had. Faith that is sure of itself is not faith;
faith that is sure of God is the only faith there is.

Praying with Paul : "Patiently, yet Expectantly"

PATIENTLY, YET EXPECTANTLY

Colossians 3:3-4

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+3:3-4

Dear Father,

My God, I know that I have died and that my life is hid with
Christ. He holds the outcome of my life wholly in his hands; he is
my life.

Grant that I may wait patiently yet expectantly, knowing that when
he appears, I will also appear with him in glory.

Father, I thank you for this blessed hope. Let the joy of it fill
my life every day as I sojourn here on this earth.

Let me put the things of this world in perspective through the
victory that Christ brings.

In the name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

WJD! -- Right Titles, Wrong Hearts -- Luke 23:35-39

Right Titles, Wrong Hearts

The people stood there watching {Jesus}. The Jewish leaders
laughed at Jesus. They said, "If he is God's Chosen One, the
Christ, then let him save himself. He saved other people,
didn't he?" Even the soldiers laughed at Jesus and teased
him. They came to Jesus and offered him some wine. The
soldiers said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save
yourself!" (At the top of the cross these words were written:
"THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.") One of the criminals began
to shout very bad things at Jesus: "Aren't you the Christ?
Then save yourself! And save us too!"

-- Luke 23:35-39 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Isn't it amazing how the mocking crowd, the scoffing leaders, the cruel
soldiers, and the sarcastic criminal on the cross nearby all call Jesus
the right thing, but they don't put their faith in him? Yes, God can
even have the Devil himself confess the truth about Christ, but it
takes a seeking heart to believe, follow, and be saved. The truth is
there if your heart is seeking. Jesus is the one who saves, he is God's
Chosen One, he is the Messiah, and he is King of the Jews. The real
question is not his identity, but whether or not he is your Lord and
mine!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord. I trust that he
died for my sins. I believe that he could have come down off the Cross
but instead chose to suffer death for me and then was raised to life
for my salvation. In Jesus, I put my trust. Thank you in Jesus' name.
Amen.
