Christ’s Death Exposed both Religion and Politics (1)

Christ's Death Exposed both Religion and Politics (1)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 23:1 And the entire multitude of them rose up and led Him
before Pilate. (2) And they began to accuse Him, saying, We
found this man perverting our nation and forbidding people to
pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a
King. (3) And Pilate asked Him, saying, Are You the King of the
Jews? And answering him, He said, It is as you say. (4) And
Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, I find no
fault in this man. (5) But they were vehement, saying, He stirs
up the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea,
beginning from Galilee even to this place. (6) And when Pilate
heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. (7) And
when he realized that He was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent
Him up to Herod, who also himself was in Jerusalem in those
days. (8) And when Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly, for he
had wanted to see Him for a considerable time, because he had
heard about Him, and was hoping to see some sign done by Him.
(9) And he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him
nothing. (10) And the chief priests and the scribes stood by,
vehemently accusing Him. (11) And Herod with his soldiers,
having despised Him and mocked Him, threw around Him splendid
clothing and sent Him back to Pilate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Part 1 of 2)
Realizing that according to Roman law they did not have the
power to execute anyone, the religious leaders transferred the
Man-Savior to Pilate. Pilate was a Roman procurator, an agent
of Caesar Tiberius in Judea, A.D. 26-35. Not long after he
unjustly delivered the Lord Jesus up to be crucified, his
government ended abruptly. He was banished and later committed
suicide. Under God's sovereignty the Man-Savior was judged not
only by the Jewish leaders as a sheep before the shearers (Isa.
53:7), but also by the Roman governor as a criminal before the
accusers. He was judged in this way so that He might die to
save sinners with His life as a ransom (Mark 10:45). not only
for the Jews represented by the Jewish leaders, but also for
the Gentiles, represented by the Roman governor.

Pilate was not able to find any fault in the Man-Savior. Pilate
was a politician. As an officer working for the Roman Empire,
he was afraid to offend the Jewish people among whom he was
working. When Pilate realized that the Lord Jesus was of the
jurisdiction of Herod, "he sent Him up to Herod, who also
himself was in Jerusalem in those days" (v. 7). Pilate,
therefore, transferred this problem to Herod. Herod questioned
the Lord "with many words; but He answered him nothing" (v. 9).
The Lord's not answering Herod was a fulfillment of Isaiah
53:7.

Herod may have been disappointed when the Man-Savior did not
answer his questions. "Herod with his soldiers, despising Him
and mocking, threw around Him splendid clothing and sent Him
back to Pilate" (v. 11). We need to be impressed with the fact
that the One who was despised and mocked, the One who was sent
from Pilate to Herod and back again, was God Himself in a man.
The Lord Jesus was not merely a man; He was the God-man, the
complete God and a perfect man. Nevertheless, this One was
mocked. Pilate, Herod, and the soldiers played with Him like
children playing with a toy. (Continued tomorrow)

Today's Verse : James 1:12

VERSE:
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he
has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has
promised to those who love him.
-- James 1:12

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=James+1:12

THOUGHT:
I don't know about you, but it is hard for me to appreciate our
need to go through trials. In fact, trials in life are just plain
hard to tolerate! This is especially true when we are in the middle
of them. But as believers in Jesus, we have some key spiritual
reasons to persevere under trials. One of the very best reasons to
hang in there when things are tough spiritually is God's promise to
give us the crown of life that can't be taken away from us.

PRAYER:
Gracious God, thank you for promising the victor's crown of life
to me. Empower me to persevere through the power of your Holy
Spirit. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: 100 Part 1

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Psalm100:1 NIV

"Where's your joy?" A good friend asked me that question once as I was in the middle of a "pity party". He wasn't trying to be rude or uncaring; he was just trying to remind me where my hope comes from. The reason the Psalmist tells us to shout for joy to the Lord, is because it is in the Lord that we find the strength to have joy; even in the midst of trials.

When I see that phrase "all the earth", I'm reminded that not everyone believes in the Lord of the Bible. Yet, while their belief may be different, their need is the same. One day our Lord will return and every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The whole world needs Jesus in order to experience real joy. If that is true, and it is, how much more do you and I, the children of God need Jesus? When Jesus becomes the central part and focus of our life, then we can truly "Shout for joy to the LORD"!

Where's your joy?

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

What Reveals Your Character?, by Phil Ware

Note:
This is one of several letters Phil is sending to his grown children to
help them know about their grandfather, called Daddy Al. You can find a
link at the bottom of the page to take you to a list of all the other
articles associated with this subject.

Dear Zach and Megan,

I want to share with you the sixth principle your Daddy Al tried to
teach me many years ago. What I appreciated is that he demonstrated
this principle in a positive way so many times I was with him. And yes,
he blew it some, too. But, he wanted to do better at this himself and
hoped I would do it better, too. Unfortunately, you've seen some of
those who didn't live this principle. Even more unfortunately, some of
those bad examples have come from me -- but I'm working hard to live
this principle and I want to invite you to do the same.

Let me give you a couple of negative examples before we get to the
positive way to live the sixth principle.

Scenario One:

You've seen the group in the cafe or restaurant. They gather each
week for conversation, friendship, and maybe even a bit of prayer.
It is a sweet time for them and they obviously feel good about
getting together with other believers. This time is their oasis in
the middle of an otherwise tense and challenging work week lived
out among many who do not share their faith.

The wait-staff at the little cafe knows this group, too. They know
the group is made up of professing Christians. They've seen the
group pray. They've overheard the group's spiritual conversation.
They also know that this group will tip less and demand more than
most "non-Christian" groups that they serve -- if you don't believe
this is true, ask ten people who have experience as waiters. They
also know that every-once-in-awhile, one in this "Christian" group
leaves a little spiritual tract or card with messages using
Christian sounding slogans. Sometimes, someone even leaves the
wait-staff an evangelistic booklet on how to become a Christian and
escape their being lost. The wait-staff politely waits until they
are out of the group's line of sight, and then they put that
information in the same place they put the used paper napkins.
They've been mistreated, embarrassed, and short-changed by low tips
too many times to want to have anything to do with a "Christian
group."

Scenario Two:

Going to a "Christian" school, you've unfortunately seen parents go
to your games and embarrass themselves and cause a scene with the
officials. Some of those parents, immediately on arriving at the
game, wince and make comments as they recognize the officials
refereeing the game. The officials are obviously not pleased to be
there, either. The parents feel that the officials are not very
good, maybe even a bit biased against your school.

Chances are, the parents may be correct in that assessment. The
officials don't like being there. One of them, a Christian himself,
is trying to lead his co-official to Christ. Unfortunately, he
knows that this assignment will set back that hope because of the
way his friend will be treated and the things said to him by this
"Christian crowd" of parents and fans. The non-Christian ref is
always amazed at how insulting the crowd can actually be without
using words of profanity. In some ways, it is humorous. In other
ways, it galvanizes him to keep his barriers up against anyone who
claims to be a Christian.

Am I being too harsh?

I don't think so. Not from feedback I've received about these things
from folks in both kinds of situations. As you know, I am sadly guilty
of some of these bad behaviors myself, and I wish that I could take
them back and do those things over again. I promise I would be
different in those situations and I assure you that I am different in
them today.

Aren't there exceptions to these two scenarios?

Absolutely! Unfortunately, not nearly enough exceptions. That's why
your Daddy Al's sixth principle is so crucial. It's one of the most
important that I want to share with you because I believe it is so
important to do things right in this area if we are ever going to
effectively share Jesus with others.

What is this sixth principle?

All these are real people who matter eternally!

It's simple to recite, but hard to live. The sixth principle is this:
your character is most revealed by the way you treat people most folks
don't feel that they have to treat nicely.

Now I know that you're probably saying, "But aren't we supposed to
treat everyone nicely?" And of course the answer to that is a
resounding, "Yes!" Unfortunately, we get in social situations where
social expectations help us to not see people as people, but as the
services they perform for us.

Here are some of those folks to whom I'm referring: referees, maids,
wait-staff, bellhops, ushers, elevator operators, store clerks, check
out people, secretaries, telephone operators, customer service
representatives (especially if they don't speak our language well),
custodians, ticket-takers, nurses, receptionists, sales staff,
convenience store personnel, city staffers, school workers, teachers
and school staff, and the list could go on and on.

Your Daddy Al tried to impress on me that all these people are real
people ... real people who matter ... real people who matter eternally!
And whether or not THEY are kind, considerate, fair, or good to you and
me doesn't negate the fact that WE are to treat them just as we would
like to be treated. The golden rule of Jesus -- "So in everything, do
to others what you would have them do to you!" (Matthew 7:12) -- is not
intended for our use only when it is easy or when it involves people we
like or when the situation pertains to people whom society says are our
equals. The golden rule is for everyone we meet, in every circumstance
we meet them, no matter what.

So this week, as you face the demands of your jobs and you run into
people who try to run over you, ignore you, mistreat you, or ignore
you, let them be a reminder of what you refuse to become. And as you
bump into folks that those around you may mistreat or simply view as
folks who owe them a service, please remember what your Daddy Al tried
to teach us all: your character is most revealed by the way you treat
people most folks don't feel that they have to treat nicely. Living
with this kind of character is what made Jesus so unique. It's what
will make you so special, too!

Love you both!

Love,

Dad

P.S. I do beg the forgiveness of all those referees, umpires,
officials, and spectators who witnessed me failing the character test
on this issue. I'm not all the way there yet, but I assure you, I am
seriously committed to living my dad's sixth principle in my daily
life.

Morning & Evening -- Isaiah 54:17 and Psalms 100:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, November 5, 2007

MORNING:

"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper."
-- Isaiah 54:17

This day is notable in English history for two great deliverances
wrought by God for us. On this day the plot of the Papists to destroy
our Houses of Parliament was discovered, 1605.

"While for our princes they prepare
In caverns deep a burning snare,
He shot from heaven a piercing ray,
And the dark treachery brought to day."

And secondly-to-day is the anniversary of the landing of King William
III, at Torbay, by which the hope of Popish ascendancy was quashed, and
religious liberty was secured, 1688.

This day ought to be celebrated, not by the saturnalia of striplings,
but by the songs of saints. Our Puritan forefathers most devoutly made
it a special time of thanksgiving. There is extant a record of the
annual sermons preached by Matthew Henry on this day. Our Protestant
feeling, and our love of liberty, should make us regard its anniversary
with holy gratitude. Let our hearts and lips exclaim, "We have heard
with our ears, and our fathers have told us the wondrous things which
thou didst in their day, and in the old time before them." Thou hast
made this nation the home of the gospel; and when the foe has risen
against her, thou hast shielded her. Help us to offer repeated songs
for repeated deliverances. Grant us more and more a hatred of
Antichrist, and hasten on the day of her entire extinction. Till then
and ever, we believe the promise, "No weapon that is formed against
thee shall prosper." Should it not be laid upon the heart of every
lover of the gospel of Jesus on this day to plead for the overturning
of false doctrines and the extension of divine truth? Would it not be
well to search our own hearts, and turn out any of the Popish lumber of
self-righteousness which may lie concealed therein?

EVENING:

"Be thankful unto him, and bless his name."
-- Psalms 100:4

Our Lord would have all his people rich in high and happy thoughts
concerning his blessed person. Jesus is not content that his brethren
should think meanly of him; it is his pleasure that his espoused ones
should be delighted with his beauty. We are not to regard him as a bare
necessary, like to bread and water, but as a luxurious delicacy, as a
rare and ravishing delight. To this end he has revealed himself as the
"pearl of great price" in its peerless beauty, as the "bundle of myrrh"
in its refreshing fragrance, as the "rose of Sharon" in its lasting
perfume, as the "lily" in its spotless purity.

As a help to high thoughts of Christ, remember the estimation that
Christ is had in beyond the skies, where things are measured by the
right standard. Think how God esteems the Only Begotten, his
unspeakable gift to us. Consider what the angels think of him, as they
count it their highest honour to veil their faces at his feet. Consider
what the blood-washed think of him, as day without night they sing his
well deserved praises. High thoughts of Christ will enable us to act
consistently with our relations towards him. The more loftily we see
Christ enthroned, and the more lowly we are when bowing before the foot
of the throne, the more truly shall we be prepared to act our part
towards him. Our Lord Jesus desires us to think well of him, that we
may submit cheerfully to his authority. High thoughts of him increase
our love. Love and esteem go together. Therefore, believer, think much
of your Master's excellencies. Study him in his primeval glory, before
he took upon himself your nature! Think of the mighty love which drew
him from his throne to die upon the cross! Admire him as he conquers
all the powers of hell! See him risen, crowned, glorified! Bow before
him as the Wonderful, the Counsellor, the mighty God, for only thus
will your love to him be what it should.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Partakers Of His Sufferings"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 5, 2007

PARTAKERS OF HIS SUFFERINGS

Rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's
sufferings.

1 Peter 4:13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1pe+4:13&sr=1

If you are going to be used by God, He will take you through a
multitude of experiences that are not meant for you at all, they are
meant to make you useful in His hands, and to enable you to
understand what transpires in other souls so that you will never be
surprised at what you come across. Oh, I can't deal with that person.
Why not? God gave you ample opportunity to soak before Him on that
line, and you barged off because it seemed stupid to spend time in
that way.

The sufferings of Christ are not those of ordinary men. He suffered
"according to the will of God," not from the point of view we suffer
from as individuals. It is only when we are related to Jesus Christ
that we can understand what God is after in His dealings with us. It
is part of Christian culture to know what God's aim is. In the
history of the Christian Church the tendency has been to evade being
identified with the sufferings of Jesus Christ; men have sought to
procure the carrying out of God's order by a short cut of their own.
God's way is always the way of suffering, the way of the "long, long
trail."

Are we partakers of Christ's sufferings? Are we prepared for God to
stamp our personal ambitions right out? Are we prepared for God to
destroy by transfiguration our individual determinations? It will not
mean that we know exactly why God is taking us that way, that would
make us spiritual prigs. We never realize at the time what God is
putting us through; we go through it more or less misunderstandingly;
then we come to a luminous place, and say - ' 'Why, God has girded
me, though I did not know it!"

Praying with Paul : "Living in the Spirit"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

LIVING IN THE SPIRIT

Ephesians 5:15-18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+5:15-18

Dear Father,

Help me to be careful about how I live. May I behave not as an
unwise person but as a wise one.

Help me make the most of every opportunity, because the days of
this age are evil. I don't want to be foolish. I want to understand
what the will of the Lord is.

May I never use or abuse alcohol or drugs, which would lead to an
undisciplined and wasted life. Instead, let me be drunk with your
Spirit.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

WJD! -- Repentance Means Change! -- Luke 19:8-9

Repentance Means Change!

Zacchaeus said to the Lord (Jesus), "I want to do good. I
will give half of my money to the poor. If I have cheated any
person, I will pay that person back four times more!" Jesus
said, "Today is the day for this family to be saved from sin.
Yes, even this tax collector is one of God's chosen people!

-- Luke 19:8-9 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Zacchaeus is a living example of repentance in this passage. Repentance
is a change of heart that leads to a change of life. Zacchaeus was so
touched by the Lord's loving presence, his heart was changed and he
made a commitment to change his lifestyle. That kind of change is the
mark of salvation and the guarantee of a new person!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, thank you for the joy your salvation brings. I praise you for
the joy and hope my salvation has brought to me. Please empower me with
your Spirit to produce the fruit of repentance, a life that blesses
others and brings glory to you. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord, I
pray. Amen.
