Today's Verse : Ruth 1:16

VERSE:
Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from
you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your
people will be my people and your God my God."
-- Ruth 1:16

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ruth+1:16

THOUGHT:
This beautiful statement of loyalty makes its way into thousands
of weddings each year. Incredibly, this wasn't originally a pledge
of a bride or groom. Instead, it was the pledge of Ruth to her
mother-in-law -- some would call her an ex-mother-in-law since
Ruth's husband, Naomi's son, had died, but Ruth never treats Naomi
as an "ex" of any kind. God loves loyalty and bestows his blessing
and favor when we are loyal to others. In an era where people are
thrown away as readily as paper plates and napkins, let's remember
that loyalty is a quality that God not only loves, but it is also a
quality that he defines for us in Jesus. So let's see loyalty to
friends, to family, and to other followers of Jesus as a crucial
commitment.

PRAYER:
Almighty and faithful God, thank you for your loyalty to your
covenant promises to Israel. Thank you for not giving up on your
people or your promises despite the fickleness and unfaithfulness
of your people. Bless us today as we seek to be a loyal and
honorable people, your true children in a turbulent and treacherous
world. May the light of faithfulness that is seen through us beckon
others to find stability and hope in your grace and in your people.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Bird Brain

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Bird Brain
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds! Proverbs 1:17 NIV

Birds are too smart for that, are you?

If you are going to catch birds with a net, you don't won't them to see you laying out the net. If they do...you won't catch many birds.

In the Biblical days of Solomon, bird hunters would spread a net on the ground, baited with food for the birds. As the birds would fly down for dinner, the hunters would pull up the nest quickly, capturing many of the birds. Birds are smatter than you think, though. If they saw the hunters laying down the nets, they wouldn't land...and so they wouldn't be caught by the trap.

You and I are beginning another year. What it holds for us, we don't know. There will be stuggles, as well as triumphs, if this year is like all the previous ones. The progress we make in our spiritual life will be in large degree directly proportional to the amount of abiding we do in Christ.

One thing also is for sure, we will take on the characteristics of the places we go, the people we hang around, and the thoughts we place in our minds. You and I are much a product of our environment!

Which brings me back to those birds. See, they were smart enough not to get tangled in a "known" trap! The question of the day is this: Are you and I that smart? We know those things, places and people that cause us to sin; that keep us from being more like Jesus.....

...so are we smart enough to avoid the trap?

This year, lets watch for those nets of sin that are already laying on the ground!

Now that you've read Today's Mustard Seed Thought, go to the Web and try the Word Search Game. It's always based the current Mustard Seed Thought.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Specialty of the House, by Rubel Shelly

Starbucks® does lots of things right. For one thing, the company's core
product is still coffee; Starbucks does what it knows best. For
another, it knows how to place its stores strategically; they prefer to
be near dry cleaners, because customers make both a drop-off and
pick-up visit to the same location.

The something special with Starbucks that drives its expansion and
popularity, however, may be summed up most simply in the words of
Howard Schultz. "We're not in the coffee business serving people," he
insists. "We're in the people business serving coffee."

It seems so obvious that you'd think everybody would follow suit with
this principle that generates success in business. I know! Every
business would insist that its first priority is the customer, but we
customers know better. Practically having to slap a clerk to get his
attention or having to wait through an obviously personal cell phone
call to pay a cashier is exasperating. Then getting a sullen stare
rather than a "May I help you?" doesn't help. And then there is the
seldom-heard line as you relinquish your hard-earned money for items
you almost feel were arm-wrestled from the people getting paid to sell
them: "Thank you!"

Maybe I'm a case for some psychologist to study for her doctoral
project. Perhaps the problem is altogether with me as a customer. But
my father supported his family selling hardware and taught his sons to
treat customers as important people. Where is that sentiment in the
stores I frequent?

It's time we made the effort.

It has become a game with me. Coming to the cashier, I will not accept
"Cash or charge?" or "Paper or plastic?" as a greeting. My response is
a smiling "Hello!" If there is a repeat of the "Cash or charge?" or
simply (as once last week) a glowering stare, I do it a second time.
"Hi! How are you today?" I've never had the courage to try it three
times in a row for fear of being slapped. I just plink down my money,
shake my head, and leave -- vowing never to go back there.

It helps that Starbucks not only trains its employees to pay attention
to people, but treats them well. For example, the company provides full
health benefits even for its part-time workers. In fact, I confess to
having disliked Starbucks -- and derisively calling it "Fourbucks" --
until my wife told me the company spends more on health care for its
workers than for coffee. People who are treated well by management are
more likely to treat customers well.

Hey, not every Starbucks worker gets it right. I can take you to at
least one location that makes a mockery of the Schultz credo about "the
people business." For the most part, though, they really seem to get
it.

For the rest of us who deal with the public, it's time we made the
effort.

[Jesus said] "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the
least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me" (Matthew
5:19 TNIV).

Morning & Evening -- 2 Samuel 7:25 and Psalms 109:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

MORNING:

"Do as thou hast said."
-- 2 Samuel 7:25

God's promises were never meant to be thrown aside as waste paper; he
intended that they should be used. God's gold is not miser's money, but
is minted to be traded with. Nothing pleases our Lord better than to
see his promises put in circulation; he loves to see his children bring
them up to him, and say, "Lord, do as thou hast said." We glorify God
when we plead his promises. Do you think that God will be any the
poorer for giving you the riches he has promised? Do you dream that he
will be any the less holy for giving holiness to you? Do you imagine he
will be any the less pure for washing you from your sins? He has said
"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins
be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like
crimson, they shall be as wool." Faith lays hold upon the promise of
pardon, and it does not delay, saying, "This is a precious promise, I
wonder if it be true?" but it goes straight to the throne with it, and
pleads, "Lord, here is the promise, 'Do as thou hast said.'" Our Lord
replies, "Be it unto thee even as thou wilt." When a Christian grasps a
promise, if he does not take it to God, he dishonours him; but when he
hastens to the throne of grace, and cries, "Lord, I have nothing to
recommend me but this, 'Thou hast said it;'" then his desire shall be
granted. Our heavenly Banker delights to cash his own notes. Never let
the promise rust. Draw the word of promise out of its scabbard, and use
it with holy violence. Think not that God will be troubled by your
importunately reminding him of his promises. He loves to hear the loud
outcries of needy souls. It is his delight to bestow favours. He is
more ready to hear than you are to ask. The sun is not weary of
shining, nor the fountain of flowing. It is God's nature to keep his
promises; therefore go at once to the throne with "Do as thou hast
said."

EVENING:

"But I give myself unto prayer."
-- Psalms 109:4

Lying tongues were busy against the reputation of David, but he did not
defend himself; he moved the case into a higher court, and pleaded
before the great King himself. Prayer is the safest method of replying
to words of hatred. The Psalmist prayed in no cold-hearted manner, he
gave himself to the exercise-threw his whole soul and heart into
it-straining every sinew and muscle, as Jacob did when wrestling with
the angel. Thus, and thus only, shall any of us speed at the throne of
grace. As a shadow has no power because there is no substance in it,
even so that supplication, in which a man's proper self is not
thoroughly present in agonizing earnestness and vehement desire, is
utterly ineffectual, for it lacks that which would give it force.
"Fervent prayer," says an old divine, "like a cannon planted at the
gates of heaven, makes them fly open." The common fault with the most
of us is our readiness to yield to distractions. Our thoughts go roving
hither and thither, and we make little progress towards our desired
end. Like quicksilver our mind will not hold together, but rolls off
this way and that. How great an evil this is! It injures us, and what
is worse, it insults our God. What should we think of a petitioner, if,
while having an audience with a prince, he should be playing with a
feather or catching a fly?

Continuance and perseverance are intended in the expression of our
text. David did not cry once, and then relapse into silence; his holy
clamour was continued till it brought down the blessing. Prayer must
not be our chance work, but our daily business, our habit and vocation.
As artists give themselves to their models, and poets to their
classical pursuits, so must we addict ourselves to prayer. We must be
immersed in prayer as in our element, and so pray without ceasing.
Lord, teach us so to pray that we may be more and more prevalent in
supplication.

going through a "white funeral" - the burial of the old life. If
there has never been this crisis of death, sanctification is nothing
more than a vision. There must be a "white funeral," - a death that
has only one resurrection - a resurrection into the life of Jesus
Christ. Nothing can upset such a life, it is one with God for one
purpose, to be a witness to Him.

Have you come to your last days really? You have come to them often
in sentiment, but have you come to them really? You cannot go to your
funeral in excitement, or die in excitement. Death means you stop
being. Do you agree with God that you stop being the striving,
earnest kind of Christian you have been? We skirt the cemetery and
all the time refuse to go to death. It is not striving to go to
death, it is dying - "baptized into His death."

Have you had your "white funeral," or are you sacredly playing the
fool with your soul? Is there a place in your life marked as the last
day, a place to which the memory goes back with a chastened and
extraordinarily grateful remembrance - "Yes, it was then, at that
'white funeral,' that I made an agreement with God."

"This is the will of God, even your sanctification." When you realize
what the will of God is, you will enter into sanctification as
naturally as can be. Are you willing to go through that "white
funeral" now? Do you agree with Him that this is your last day on
earth? The moment of agreement depends upon you.

Praying with Paul : "Credited as Righteousness"

CREDITED AS RIGHTEOUSNESS

Romans 4:1-5

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+4:1-5

Dear Father, friend of Abraham,

Thank you for the wonderful relationship you established with
Abraham. Through him you have blessed the world. Through that
relationship you have blessed me. Thank you, Lord, that through it
you will bring even more blessings, now and for ever.

Thank you that Abraham's relationship to you was not something he
earned; it came because "Abraham believed God, and it was credited
to him as righteousness."

To one who works, wages are not a gift but payment due. We thank
you that our relationship is not that of a hired hand. We do not
work for wages. We work for you out of a faith and a love that you
fired in our hearts. We trust you as the one who justifies the
ungodly and who credits our faith as righteousness.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Sabbath Teaching -- Mark 1:21-22

Sabbath Teaching

Jesus and his followers went to Capernaum. On the Sabbath day
Jesus went into the synagogue and taught the people. The
people there were amazed at Jesus' teaching. Jesus did not
teach like their teachers of the law. Jesus taught like a
person that had authority (power).

-- Mark 1:21-22 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus went to church! Well, not exactly church as we know it, but he
did go to the assembly of God's people at the synagogue. Weren't there
hypocrites, sinners, and worse in those meetings? Yes! But Jesus went
to the synagogue because these people were searching for God, despite
their failures and their problems. He used his visits as opportunities
to teach the people. They recognized his authority. Do we? Are we
responding to Jesus' words of comfort, challenge, and conviction?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy God and righteous Father, thank you for Jesus' example of going to
meet with your people and blessing them with your truth. As I go to the
assembly of folks who honor your name and praise Jesus for his
sacrifice, I pray that you will still have Jesus' will and teaching be
heard. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
