THOUGHT:
I usually "speed read" through the "begats" (you know, through
the genealogies in the Bible). But, let's take time today to go
back and read Matthew 1:1-17 and be reminded that God's love,
mercy, and faithfulness not only continued through all of those
generations, but also blessed and nurtured each of those
generations. As he has done in the past, God will do so even more
in the days ahead as we await the glorious return of his Son and
our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER:
In a world of change and undependability, thank you, dear
Father, for being sure, steadfast, and faithful. In a time when
everyone seems to want something from me or out of me, thank you,
dear Father, for repeatedly and consistently blessing me. Thank you
for being more enduring than the mountains and more glorious than
the most beautiful sunrise. In the name of Jesus, your Son and my
glory. Amen.

When He had said this Jesus called in a loud voice, �Lazarus, come out!� The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, �Take off the grave clothes and let him go.� John 11:43-44 NIV

Jesus had just raised Lazarus from the grave. You and I love the story because it shows the power of the Savior whom we love. We know that if He can raise the dead to life, we can trust Him to help us make our house payment or whatever struggles our life may hold.

This event, so full of truths, triggered the Pharisees to crucify Jesus. Lazarus had been dead four days. Jewish tradition prompted the family to bury soon after death, but the Jews also believed the spirit hovered over the dead body for up to three days. This time too had passed. Lazarus was a fully dead man! It was a real miracle to bring him back to life, and this was too much for the Pharisees.

What the Pharisees underestimat ed was that this power would continue to be exhibited in the life of Christians for thousands of years to come. You and I (if you are a child of God) have been brought from death unto life. A pastor once said that it is a good thing Jesus said �Lazarus, come out,� or everybody ever buried would have been risen! Jesus has power over death!

We need to remember that today. Jesus has power over death! Is there anything in your life that He can't handle? Jesus came to give us life! Jesus told Lazarus to take off His grave clothes, to quit �living� like he was dead. Shouldn't we do the same thing? Have you accepted Jesus? Is your name recorded in Heaven as a child of God? Have the angels sung �Glory� over your salvation? Have you personally, without reservation, believed that Jesus died for your sins, and that the only way you will enter Heaven is through the saving grace of His shed blood on the cross?

Well, then, TAKE OFF YOUR GRAVE CLOTHES! Quit �living� among the dead. Look alive! Jesus saved you by grace, through faith, not unto death, but unto life! Shouldn't that make a noticeable difference in your life today? SO LIVE! Don't let this world steal your joy. Don't let Satan rob you of your peace. Stop worrying over tomorrow.

Start living! Walk boldly into the throne room of the Lord. Receive mercy and grace in your time of need. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him. Let Him direct your paths!

You are His child, precious in His sight! Take off your grave clothes and LIVE!

Future Gas Prices, by Steve Ridgell


It is still a hot topic of discussion almost everywhere I go. How much
will we pay for gas in the future? The price we pay to drive our
vehicles has been at the center of much of the financial news of the
past year. You remember the shock you felt the first time you paid $2 a
gallon, then $3, and occasionally even $4 a gallon. It was unreal. You
sometimes had to use your credit card twice at the pump because the
automatic price cut-off kicked in before you had filled up. I heard
university students over the holidays talking excitedly about the cheap
gas they were finding at only $1.50 per gallon.

If they only knew. I guess I must be really old but I remember the
shock of paying $1 per gallon for the first time. I remember being able
to buy gas a few times at 19 cents per gallon. I could go for several
days on a quarter's worth of gas. Who would have dreamed the price of
gas would go so high, then so low, then so high? How do you budget
travel expense? What will the price of gas be this year? And why does
no one seem to know?

I am sure that I do not know the future. Smarter people than me are
having a hard time figuring out gas prices, housing markets,
international politics, environmental issues, and a whole lot more. So
how does one live in uncertain times? How does one find joy, peace,
hope, and security when the future is so unclear?

I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation,
whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
Actually I stole this last sentence from a man named Paul who lived
almost 2000 years ago. But I have learned the secret also. The secret
is to find something you can be certain about. Something that you can
count on no matter how bad -- or how good -- things turn out in the
future.

It's Jesus. That may seem too simplistic, too "churchy" to say that,
but it is true. I do not put my trust in the economy, or in the
forecasts of economic trends, or in the price of gas next year, or even
in the next decade. I will trust Jesus. He has a track record I can
count on ... in history, but also in my life. He has, and he will, see
me through whatever comes in this life. More importantly, he is my
guarantee that this life is not all there is. I will live forever.

I have to know there is something I can count on both now and in the
future.

And that is the future I am certain of.

MORNING:

"Mighty to save."
-- Isaiah 63:1

By the words "to save" we understand the whole of the great work of
salvation, from the first holy desire onward to complete
sanctification. The words are multum in parro: indeed, here is all
mercy in one word. Christ is not only "mighty to save" those who
repent, but he is able to make men repent. He will carry those to
heaven who believe; but he is, moreover, mighty to give men new hearts
and to work faith in them. He is mighty to make the man who hates
holiness love it, and to constrain the despiser of his name to bend the
knee before him. Nay, this is not all the meaning, for the divine power
is equally seen in the after-work. The life of a believer is a series
of miracles wrought by "the Mighty God." The bush burns, but is not
consumed. He is mighty to keep his people holy after he has made them
so, and to preserve them in his fear and love until he consummates
their spiritual existence in heaven. Christ's might doth not lie in
making a believer and then leaving him to shift for himself; but he who
begins the good work carries it on; he who imparts the first germ of
life in the dead soul, prolongs the divine existence, and strengthens
it until it bursts asunder every bond of sin, and the soul leaps from
earth, perfected in glory. Believer, here is encouragement. Art thou
praying for some beloved one? Oh, give not up thy prayers, for Christ
is "mighty to save." You are powerless to reclaim the rebel, but your
Lord is Almighty. Lay hold on that mighty arm, and rouse it to put
forth its strength. Does your own case trouble you? Fear not, for his
strength is sufficient for you. Whether to begin with others, or to
carry on the work in you, Jesus is "mighty to save;" the best proof of
which lies in the fact that he has saved you. What a thousand mercies
that you have not found him mighty to destroy!

EVENING:

"Beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me."
-- Matthew 14:30

Sinking times are praying times with the Lord's servants. Peter
neglected prayer at starting upon his venturous journey, but when he
began to sink his danger made him a suppliant, and his cry though late
was not too late. In our hours of bodily pain and mental anguish, we
find ourselves as naturally driven to prayer as the wreck is driven
upon the shore by the waves. The fox hies to its hole for protection;
the bird flies to the wood for shelter; and even so the tried believer
hastens to the mercy seat for safety. Heaven's great harbour of refuge
is All-prayer; thousands of weather-beaten vessels have found a haven
there, and the moment a storm comes on, it is wise for us to make for
it with all sail.

Short prayers are long enough. There were but three words in the
petition which Peter gasped out, but they were sufficient for his
purpose. Not length but strength is desirable. A sense of need is a
mighty teacher of brevity. If our prayers had less of the tail feathers
of pride and more wing they would be all the better. Verbiage is to
devotion as chaff to the wheat. Precious things lie in small compass,
and all that is real prayer in many a long address might have been
uttered in a petition as short as that of Peter.

Our extremities are the Lord's opportunities. Immediately a keen sense
of danger forces an anxious cry from us the ear of Jesus hears, and
with him ear and heart go together, and the hand does not long linger.
At the last moment we appeal to our Master, but his swift hand makes up
for our delays by instant and effectual action. Are we nearly engulfed
by the boisterous waters of affliction? Let us then lift up our souls
unto our Saviour, and we may rest assured that he will not suffer us to
perish. When we can do nothing Jesus can do all things; let us enlist
his powerful aid upon our side, and all will be well.

CALLED OF GOD

Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I,
Here am I; send me.

Isaiah 6:8

God did not address the call to Isaiah; Isaiah overheard God saying,
"Who will go for us?" The call of God is not for the special few, it
is for everyone. Whether or not I hear God's call depends upon the
state of my ears; and what I hear depends upon my disposition. "Many
are called but few are chosen," that is, few prove themselves the
chosen ones. The chosen ones are those who have come into a
relationship with God through Jesus Christ whereby their disposition
has been altered and their ears unstopped, and they hear the still
small voice questioning all the time, "Who will go for us?" It is not
a question of God singling out a man and saying, "Now, you go." God
did not lay a strong compulsion on Isaiah; Isaiah was in the presence
of God and he overheard the call, and realized that there was nothing
else for him but to say, in conscious freedom, "Here am I, send me."
Get out of your mind the idea of expecting God to come with
compulsions and pleadings. When our Lord called His disciples there
was no irresistible compulsion from outside. The quiet passionate
insistence of His "Follow Me" was spoken to men with every power wide
awake. If we let the Spirit of God bring us face to face with God, we
too shall hear something akin to what Isaiah heard, the still small
voice of God; and in perfect freedom will say, "Here am I; send me."

All praise is due you, Father. Our boasting is totally excluded.
Our justification is not by our works, but through our faith in
you. So we are convinced by Paul that a person is justified by
faith and not by works of the law.

You are God not only of the Jews but of all other nations also.
You are the one God, the only God, the God of all people
everywhere.

On the basis of whether people put their trust in you instead of
themselves you justify people from every nation and race. What a
wonderful God! Thank you for putting faith in my heart and
accepting me.

In the name of Jesus we ask all this and lay claim to the grace
which you have so generously extended. Amen.

Slaying the Innocents


Herod saw that the wise men had fooled him. Herod was very,
very angry. So Herod gave an order to kill all the boys in
Bethlehem and in all the area around Bethlehem. Herod had
learned from the wise men the time {the baby was born}. It
was now two years from that time. So Herod said to kill all
the boys that were two years old and younger. So the thing
God said through the prophet Jeremiah happened: "A sound was
heard in Ramah. It was bitter crying and much sadness. Rachel
cries for her children; and she cannot be comforted, because
her children are dead."

KEY THOUGHT:
I don't know about you, but I don't like this story. It spoils the
sentimentality of the birth story of Jesus. But, at a more primal level
of truth, this story of Herod's brutal paranoia shocks us awake, and
helps us understand why Jesus had to come. Without a reverence for God
and his Word, we human beings have shown a remarkable propensity for
brutality, as culture loses sight of the preciousness of each person
created in the image of God. The slaying of the innocents reminds us of
how easily we slip into a mentality that puts personal protection,
reputation, and position above the rights of those who are vulnerable
and powerless. Just because Jesus is Immanuel, God with us, doesn't
mean he came to a safe and pristine world, or was somehow insulated
from the realities of evil unleashed among us. This brutal world
awaited him. That's the core of the story. Even the innocents are not
protected, even if that Innocent is God among us -- as later events in
Jesus life will reveal.


TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, please forgive us for the slaying of innocents today -- this is
especially true when we do such things to maintain appearances while we
extinguish any unexpected and unwanted "surprises." Thank you for
sending Jesus in a time and in a way that exposed him to the brutality
of the world, a brutality that still haunts us to this day. Thank you
that his blood will cleanse any repentant sinner, even those who have
been a part of the brutality. Father, please forgive me for the times I
have looked at others without your love for them in my heart. In Jesus'
precious name I pray. Amen.
