A Cup of Cool Water, by Phil Ware

California Wildfires from Space. NASA Photo.

The devastation of the California fires has brought unspeakable horror
to thousands of people. Many of those have insurance and will have the
ability to make some recovery of basic goods -- of course pictures,
keepsakes, pets, heirlooms, and other sorts of irreplaceable items can
never be replaced and the loss of life can never be compensated. In
addition, many who live in apartments, single parents without insurance
and much margin in life, older adults who have no place to go, and many
others, will lose everything without any resources to begin again. In
other words, many have no safety net in this hour of crisis.

Many have no safety net in this hour of crisis.

Some of the early relief has simply been to get water into the hands of
displaced people. This reminds me of Jesus' statement, "And if anyone
gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is known
to be my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly be
rewarded" (Matthew 10:42 TNIV).

You may have already donated to this need. If not, we would encourage
you to find ways to donate and help relieve the suffering of those who
are facing hardship.

Here are three options we feel confident will help folks in need:

Option One: Disaster Relief Organization
Disaster Relief led by Whites Ferry Road Church of Christ disaster
relief program. This is an experienced group that has helped folks
in time of disaster again and again. This link will take you to
their PayPal donation site.

Option Two: Church Near the Disaster
The other resource is a church in San Diego much nearer the fire
zone: Mail checks to:
Canyon View Church
Memo: Disaster Relief

Option Three: American Red Cross

Morning & Evening -- 2 Timothy 2:11 and Isaiah 64:6

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, October 27, 2007

MORNING:

"It is a faithful saying."
-- 2 Timothy 2:11

Paul has four of these "faithful sayings." The first occurs in 1
Timothy 1:15, "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all
acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners."
The next is in 1 Timothy 4:6, "Godliness is profitable unto all things,
having the promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to
come. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation." The
third is in 2 Timothy 2:12, "It is a faithful saying-If we suffer with
him we shall also reign with him"; and the fourth is in Titus 3:3,
"This is a faithful saying, that they which have believed in God might
be careful to maintain good works." We may trace a connection between
these faithful sayings. The first one lays the foundation of our
eternal salvation in the free grace of God, as shown to us in the
mission of the great Redeemer. The next affirms the double blessedness
which we obtain through this salvation-the blessings of the upper and
nether springs-of time and of eternity. The third shows one of the
duties to which the chosen people are called; we are ordained to suffer
for Christ with the promise that "if we suffer, we shall also reign
with him." The last sets forth the active form of Christian service,
bidding us diligently to maintain good works. Thus we have the root of
salvation in free grace; next, the privileges of that salvation in the
life which now is, and in that which is to come; and we have also the
two great branches of suffering with Christ and serving with Christ,
loaded with the fruits of the Spirit. Treasure up these faithful
sayings. Let them be the guides of our life, our comfort, and our
instruction. The apostle of the Gentiles proved them to be faithful,
they are faithful still, not one word shall fall to the ground; they
are worthy of all acceptation, let us accept them now, and prove their
faithfulness. Let these four faithful sayings be written on the four
corners of my house.

EVENING:

"We are all as an unclean thing."
-- Isaiah 64:6

The believer is a new creature, he belongs to a holy generation and a
peculiar people-the Spirit of God is in him, and in all respects he is
far removed from the natural man; but for all that the Christian is a
sinner still. He is so from the imperfection of his nature, and will
continue so to the end of his earthly life. The black fingers of sin
leave smuts upon our fairest robes. Sin mars our repentance, ere the
great Potter has finished it, upon the wheel. Selfishness defiles our
tears, and unbelief tampers with our faith. The best thing we ever did
apart from the merit of Jesus only swelled the number of our sins; for
when we have been most pure in our own sight, yet, like the heavens, we
are not pure in God's sight; and as he charged his angels with folly,
much more must he charge us with it, even in our most angelic frames of
mind. The song which thrills to heaven, and seeks to emulate seraphic
strains, hath human discords in it. The prayer which moves the arm of
God is still a bruised and battered prayer, and only moves that arm
because the sinless One, the great Mediator, has stepped in to take
away the sin of our supplication. The most golden faith or the purest
degree of sanctification to which a Christian ever attained on earth,
has still so much alloy in it as to be only worthy of the flames, in
itself considered. Every night we look in the glass we see a sinner,
and had need confess, "We are all as an unclean thing, and all our
righteousnesses are as filthy rags." Oh, how precious the blood of
Christ to such hearts as ours! How priceless a gift is his perfect
righteousness! And how bright the hope of perfect holiness hereafter!
Even now, though sin dwells in us, its power is broken. It has no
dominion; it is a broken-backed snake; we are in bitter conflict with
it, but it is with a vanquished foe that we have to deal. Yet a little
while and we shall enter victoriously into the city where nothing
defileth.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Method Of Missions"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 27, 2007

THE METHOD OF MISSIONS

Go ye therefore, and teach (disciple) all nations.

Matthew 28:19

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+28:19&sr=1

Jesus Christ did not say - Go and save souls (the salvation of souls
is the supernatural work of God), but - "Go and teach," i.e.,
disciple, "all nations," and you cannot make disciples unless you are
a disciple yourself. When the disciples came back from their first
mission they were filled with joy because the devils were subject to
them, and Jesus said - Don't rejoice in successful service; the great
secret of joy is that you are rightly related to Me. The great
essential of the missionary is that he remains true to the call of
God, and realizes that his one purpose is to disciple men and women
to Jesus. There is a passion for souls that does not spring from God,
but from the desire to make converts to our point of view.

The challenge to the missionary does not come on the line that people
are difficult to get saved, that backsliders are difficult to
reclaim, that there is a wadge of callous indifference; but along the
line of his own personal relationship to Jesus Christ. "Believe ye
that I am able to do this?" Our Lord puts that question steadily, it
faces us in every individual case we meet. The one great challenge is
- Do I know my Risen Lord? Do I know the power of His indwelling
Spirit? Am I wise enough in God's sight, and foolish enough according
to the world, to bank on what Jesus Christ has said, or am I
abandoning the great supernatural position, which is the only call
for a missionary, viz., bound less confidence in Christ Jesus? If I
take up any other method I depart altogether from the methods laid
down by Our Lord - "All power is given unto Me . . , therefore go
ye."

Praying with Paul : "My New Nature Made Alive"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

MY NEW NATURE MADE ALIVE

Ephesians 4:17-21

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+4:17-21

Dear Father, righteous and holy God,

Help me never to be tempted to live as worldly people live: futile
in their thinking - darkened in their understanding - alienated
from you because of the ignorance within them - hard-hearted and
calloused -given over to licentiousness - greedy to practice every
kind of uncleanness.

I did not learn of a Christ like this! I learned of a righteous
and holy Christ.

Help me ever to aspire to live as your holy people live: clear and
decisive in thought - illumined in their understanding - reconciled
to you by knowing your Son - tender-hearted and supple -
self-controlled - hungering and thirsting for righteousness.

Help me to follow him just as I was taught in him - as the truth
is in Jesus.

In his precious name I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- The Danger of Riches -- Luke 18:24-25

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, October 27, 2007

The Danger of Riches

When Jesus saw that the man was sad, he said, "It will be
very hard for rich people to enter the kingdom of God! It
would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!"

-- Luke 18:24-25 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
While material riches can be a great blessing and can be used to bless
many in need and to do great things for the Kingdom, they can also be a
trap to many of us. The Gospel of Luke lets us hear Jesus teach
repeatedly about the danger of riches. Jesus' point here is that riches
can be an incredible danger to the heart of believers. This young man
is the living example of this danger. As the apostle Paul warned, greed
and a desire for riches can become idolatry and destroy us. Let's make
sure that every area of our lives, including our use of wealth, is
yielded to the Lordship of Jesus.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, thank you for your many rich blessings. Help me use these
blessings to your glory. I do not want anything to interfere with my
total devotion to you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : 1 John 2:17

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 27, 2007

VERSE:
The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the
will of God lives forever.
-- 1 John 2:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+2:17

THOUGHT:
So much of what we pursue is fleeting. Once we acquire it, we
have to try to preserve it because we know it will soon be gone.
God has promised us that just as he is eternal and will live
forever, so also are those who pursue a relationship with him and
are committed to do his will. So let's sit down and look at how we
spend our time, our money, and our efforts and ask if what we are
pursuing is really something that is worth having. Then let's ask
one more important question: "Even if it is worth having, is it
going to last long enough to make a difference?"

PRAYER:
Eternal Father, please give me the courage to be honest about
what I am pursuing with my life. I want it to count for your cause.
I want to make a difference for good. Some of that desire, I
confess, is self-serving. However, dear Father, I truly do want to
have a life that impacts others for good and that brings you honor.
I don't want to waste my time chasing after things that won't last
and don't matter. Please give me the spiritual wisdom to follow
your will and find your life rather than chasing the shadow values
of my culture. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's KJV Verse : 1 John 2:17

October 27, 2007

VERSE:
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that
doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
-- 1 John 2:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+2:17&translation=kjv

Amen.
