=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

How Much Dirt?, by Russ Lawson

How much dirt does it take to make something "Dirty"? Or perhaps I need
to ask, "How dirty does something have to be before you notice it?" Now
I realize that if you are talking about regular dirt most guys see it
differently than do women. But what about this example:

Hygiene is in the eye of the beholder, I've decided. One lunch time
I watched the woman in the sandwich shop spreading mayonnaise on my
bread, and noticed part of her grubby work shirt was dragging
across it. "Excuse me," I ventured, "your sleeve is in the mayo."
"No problem," she reassured me. "I need to wash it anyway." (Via
Belief Net, submitted by Natalie Walker)

"Yuck!" we might think, "that's terrible." Or respond this way: "I
would tell her to make me a new sandwich, I'd sure never eat that one!"

So, just how much dirt makes something dirty?

How much must something be contaminated before you reject it?

We know that our government allows for a certain amount of impurities
to be found in most of the foods sold at the market, yet we still
purchase them. We have learned to overlook those things by thinking,
"They aren't enough to hurt us or the government would have prevented
them from being sold."

Well, how much is too much?

Of course we can make this application to areas of our life other than
just food, can't we? Our televisions and movies are allowed to show
certain things that would have been rejected in the past, yet they are
considered acceptable to those in authority. Language we reject in our
daily life comes into our homes and our minds through what is presented
as "entertainment."

Did you know you can decide what you allow into your life? Our modern
technology has made it possible to know the type of things which are
contained in almost any form of "entertainment" in advance. There are a
large number of television programs and movies which come and go and my
wife and I never watch them. Why? Because we have decided we don't want
filth being dragged through our minds. Each of us even has the ability
to turn channels or shut the thing off, but will we? Will you?

A couple of years ago, someone recommended a movie to my wife and me.
We did not check it out, but just went to see the movie. We stayed for
the first five minutes and got up and walked out. Yes, we had paid for
the ticket, but we refuse to allow ourselves to be subjected to filth
if we have a choice.

Lots and lots of things are being presented in our world right now as
being "OK" or "acceptable" when they really are not acceptable. People
are making and presenting to others "life and lifestyle choices" which
are ungodly.

So what is the solution?

So how much filth does it take to make something filthy?

How much filth is acceptable in your life?

Notice what God says through the Apostle Paul in Romans 1:21-23 about
some folks who thought that "just a little" filth wouldn't hurt them:

They know God, but they do not give him the honor that belongs to
him, nor do they thank him. Instead, their thoughts have become
complete nonsense, and their empty minds are filled with darkness.
They say they are wise, but they are fools; instead of worshiping
the immortal God, they worship images made to look like mortals or
birds or animals or reptiles. And so God has given those people
over to do the filthy things their hearts desire, and they do
shameful things with each other (Romans 1:21-23 GNB).

So, what is the solution? Jesus brother, James, tells us, "So get rid
of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept
the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you" (James
1:21 GNB).

How do you want your sandwich ... or your life? Is having a filthy
sleeve drug through it acceptable or not? Is having just a little filth
drug through your TV room or reading acceptable or not?

You see, ultimately, it doesn't matter what anyone says is acceptable,
except God. Paul gives what is perhaps the best instruction on this
matter, as he focuses on the positive and not the filth: For the rest,
my brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things have honor,
whatever things are upright, whatever things are holy, whatever things
are beautiful, whatever things are of value, if there is any virtue and
if there is any praise, center your thoughts on these things (Philippians
4:8).

Morning & Evening -- Deuteronomy 5:24 and Matthew 12:20

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, July 19, 2008

MORNING:

"The Lord our God hath shewed us his glory."
-- Deuteronomy 5:24

God's great design in all his works is the manifestation of his own
glory. Any aim less than this were unworthy of himself. But how shall
the glory of God be manifested to such fallen creatures as we are?
Man's eye is not single, he has ever a side glance towards his own
honour, has too high an estimate of his own powers, and so is not
qualified to behold the glory of the Lord. It is clear, then, that self
must stand out of the way, that there may be room for God to be
exalted; and this is the reason why he bringeth his people ofttimes
into straits and difficulties, that, being made conscious of their own
folly and weakness, they may be fitted to behold the majesty of God
when he comes forth to work their deliverance. He whose life is one
even and smooth path, will see but little of the glory of the Lord, for
he has few occasions of self-emptying, and hence, but little fitness
for being filled with the revelation of God. They who navigate little
streams and shallow creeks, know but little of the God of tempests; but
they who "do business in great waters," these see his "wonders in the
deep." Among the huge Atlantic-waves of bereavement, poverty,
temptation, and reproach, we learn the power of Jehovah, because we
feel the littleness of man. Thank God, then, if you have been led by a
rough road: it is this which has given you your experience of God's
greatness and lovingkindness. Your troubles have enriched you with a
wealth of knowledge to be gained by no other means: your trials have
been the cleft of the rock in which Jehovah has set you, as he did his
servant Moses, that you might behold his glory as it passed by. Praise
God that you have not been left to the darkness and ignorance which
continued prosperity might have involved, but that in the great fight
of affliction, you have been capacitated for the outshinings of his
glory in his wonderful dealings with you.

EVENING:

"A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he
not quench."
-- Matthew 12:20

What is weaker than the bruised reed or the smoking flax? A reed that
groweth in the fen or marsh, let but the wild duck light upon it, and
it snaps; let but the foot of man brush against it, and it is bruised
and broken; every wind that flits across the river moves it to and fro.
You can conceive of nothing more frail or brittle, or whose existence
is more in jeopardy, than a bruised reed. Then look at the smoking
flax-what is it? It has a spark within it, it is true, but it is almost
smothered; an infant's breath might blow it out; nothing has a more
precarious existence than its flame. Weak things are here described,
yet Jesus says of them, "The smoking flax I will not quench; the
bruised reed I will not break." Some of God's children are made strong
to do mighty works for him; God has his Samsons here and there who can
pull up Gaza's gates, and carry them to the top of the hill; he has a
few mighties who are lion-like men, but the majority of his people are
a timid, trembling race. They are like starlings, frightened at every
passer by; a little fearful flock. If temptation comes, they are taken
like birds in a snare; if trial threatens, they are ready to faint;
their frail skiff is tossed up and down by every wave, they are drifted
along like a sea bird on the crest of the billows-weak things, without
strength, without wisdom, without foresight. Yet, weak as they are, and
because they are so weak, they have this promise made specially to
them. Herein is grace and graciousness! Herein is love and
lovingkindness! How it opens to us the compassion of Jesus-so gentle,
tender, considerate! We need never shrink back from his touch. We need
never fear a harsh word from him; though he might well chide us for our
weakness, he rebuketh not. Bruised reeds shall have no blows from him,
and the smoking flax no damping frowns.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Mastery Over The Believer"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 19, 2008

MASTERY OVER THE BELIEVER

Ye call Me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I
am.

John 13:13
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+13:13&sr=1

Our Lord never insists on having authority; He never says - Thou
shalt. He leaves us perfectly free - so free that we can spit in His
face, as men did; so free that we can put Him to death, as men did;
and He will never say a word. But when His life has been created in
me by His Redemption I instantly recognize His right to absolute
authority over me. It is a moral domination - "Thou art worthy . . ."
It is only the unworthy in me that refuses to bow down to the worthy.
If when I meet a man who is more holy than myself, I do not recognize
his worthiness and obey what comes through him, it is a revelation of
the unworthy in me. God educates us by means of people who are a
little better than we are, not intellectually but "holily," until we
get under the domination of the Lord Himself, and then the whole
attitude of the life is one of obedience to Him.

If Our Lord insisted upon obedience He would become a taskmaster, and
He would cease to have any authority. He never insists on obedience,
but when we do see Him we obey Him instantly, He is easily Lord, and
we live in adoration of Him from morning till night. The revelation
of my growth in grace is the way in which I look upon obedience. We
have to rescue the word "obedience" from the mire. Obedience is only
possible between equals; it is the relationship between father and
son, not between master and servant. "I and My Father are one."
"Though He were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which
He suffered." The Son's obedience was as Redeemer, because He was
Son, not in order to be Son.

Praying with Paul : "Care for Absent Loved Ones"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

CARE FOR ABSENT LOVED ONES

1 Thessalonians 3:1-13
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+3:1-13

Dear Father, our partner in caring,

How hard it is to be far away from those we want to encourage to
walk in your ways. We leave them in your hands, Lord, and ask you
to send your angels to guard their ways. Keep those that we love
from the power of the tempter. Grant us good news from them. We
long to hear that they are learning more and more of your will and
growing in your grace. Let us know that they are standing firm in
truth.

What thanksgiving we send before your throne, what joy we feel
for them before you, our God. What a torrent of prayer we pour out
before you that whatever is lacking in their faith may be supplied!

Make us the agents who will supply their spiritual needs. Let
there be many times for us and our loved ones to be together for
times of refreshment in your word and in prayer.

In the name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

Sadly Away

Jesus looked at the man. Jesus felt love for him. Jesus said,
"There is still one more thing you need to do. Go and sell
everything you have. Give the money to the poor people. You
will have a reward in heaven. Then come and follow me." The
man was very sorry to hear Jesus say this, and he left. The
man was sad because he was very rich {and wanted to keep his
money}.

-- Mark 10:21-22 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The Bible has heart-wrenching stories of men and women who came to know
the will of the Lord and yet were not willing to respond because
something was holding them back. I'm sure you know someone -- that
someone may even be you -- who has something holding him or her back
from totally surrendering to the will and grace of God. Please pray for
them today. While we cannot ensure these people will ever respond to
God's offer of grace, at least we can pray that they will be lovingly
confronted with the decision to accept or reject the will of the Lord.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O LORD God Almighty, I confess that there are times when I want you to
more forcefully reveal yourself to friends of mine who will not
surrender to your grace. I know that you will not overpower their
wills. I know that you want our hearts and not a forced, coerced, or
manipulated and shallow response to your offer of salvation in Jesus.
So please use me and my influence to be a helpful, tender, and clear
example to my friends who have not decided to follow your Son. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Deuteronomy 7:19

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 19, 2008

VERSE:
You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the miraculous
signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which
the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the
same to all the peoples you now fear.
-- Deuteronomy 7:19
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Deuteronomy+7:19

THOUGHT:
So often we look at the past work of God and think we will not
see the display of his power like our predecessors did. But, just
as God reminded a new generation of his people that he would go
with them and empower them like he had their parents, we also need
to expect him to do more than all we can ask or even imagine by his
power at work within us! (cf. Ephesians 3:20)

PRAYER:
Almighty God who is infinitely able to work with power and
might, we ask that you use your power to call the unsaved to Jesus
in our generation. Please use us to be your tools and do in our day
the great work of redemption, reconciliation, and revival like you
have done in years gone by. Father, we believe in your power and
your desire to save. Please act mightily to redeem our generation.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
