Today's Verse : Proverbs 2:11

VERSE:
Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.
-- Proverbs 2:11

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Proverbs+2:11

THOUGHT:
My greatest mistakes have been made in haste, when I didn't
allow a little prayer time to consider what I was going to do or
say. While discretion and understanding are acquired through
learning and experience, they are also a gift from God. But this
gift doesn't come on demand. It comes from patiently seeking,
trusting, and waiting on the Lord's guidance and from longing to
live for him as a person of character.

PRAYER:
Forgive me Father, for I fear that I am more often a "character"
than I am a person of character. Forgive my selfish desire to play
to the crowd. I confess that I sometimes try to be witty and
popular, rather than being a person of discretion, understanding,
and integrity. Help me please, dear LORD, to see through the
temptation of haste and find your path to integrity. In Jesus' name
I pray. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

We're Off!, by Phil Ware

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life
for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for one another. If
anyone of you has material possessions and sees a brother or sister
in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in you?
Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with
actions and in truth (1 John 3:16-18 TNIV).

I got up early this morning! Not to go do my usual preaching stint at
two services, but to board a plane that will take me from Abilene,
Texas to Dallas Fort Worth to Chicago O'Hair; then somewhere between
Chicago and Brussels, Belgium, Monday will dawn. From Brussels, we fly
to Nairobi and from Nairobi we fly to Kampala, Uganda, where, Lord
willing, we arrive late Monday evening; but that's tomorrow's business.
(For a graphic view of the trip, take a look at my blog on the Uganda
trip.)

Hopefully by mid-afternoon today, I've met most of the other bloggers
and Internet folks headed out on this important trip. We're going for
one simple reason: there are thousands of children whose lives
and eternal futures can be changed for the better. If we can draw
enough attention to the issue to get folks to sponsor children
monthly through Compassion, the difference can be greater than we can
imagine over several generations. My wife, Donna, and I sponsor a
little boy named Estarlin and a little girl I hope to meet in Uganda,
named Doreen. We believe in this possibility, personally!

Heartlight has long partnered with Compassion because we believe in the
mission and because Compassion has a great track record for doing three
things: 1) they make sure the vast majority of the money contributed
goes directly to help children; 2) they encourage a healthy connection
between the sponsor child without dangerous entanglements; and, 3)
these children are given the opportunity to learn about Jesus.

Is the trip long?
Yes, it is a very arduous journey and we are taking it in a short
amount of time.

Is the trip dangerous?
Yes, to some extent it is. But, we've taken our shots and we're going
to try to be responsible and smart about what we do. Yet any trip like
this carries some inherent dangers. Nonetheless, we believe the need is
crucial and that our going will help hundreds of thousands of people
know of a simple, practical way they can help make a forever-difference
in the life of a child for just a little more than a dollar a day.

Are you guys getting paid to go?
No. Compassion is flying us over and putting us up for the nights we're
there, but we paid for all of our immunizations and will pay our own
expenses above those basic costs. We are going at significant expense
to ourselves because we believe in the mission. We sponsor children
with Compassion because we want to make a difference in their lives!

Do you guys know each other?
A few folks know each other, others of us have read each others' blogs
or articles; but for the most part, we come from different walks of
life, have different skill-sets and are part of different circles of
people. But, we all love Jesus, and in the name of Jesus, we want to
help children in poverty have a future. (Take a look at the varied
characters that make up our band of Compassion travelers!)

Will it really make a difference?
Well, so far, before we took off, we believe something near 100
children will have been sponsored because of the trip. However, we're
hoping to add at least 500 more monthly sponsors as a result of this
trip. In many ways, however, those we reach through our blogs,
articles, teaching, and relationships will determine how beneficial the
trip will be to the children we are so much trying to help.

Is there really that great of a need to sponsor kids?
Please, please, I know there has been a bunch of publicity about a few
Movie and TV stars who have done things with children in Africa. Other
groups are working on water wells and other humanitarian efforts in
parts of Africa. We would in no way detract from these efforts. But
please, if you doubt the need, please follow along with the trip
through the blogs and articles this week. Ask for a packet of
information about a boy or girl and discover how a small investment can
reap such a big reward in the life of a child. (If you need more
information on the needs and standard of living in Uganda, please check
out the info page.)

Is there a way I can help or be a part of this effort?
Yes! Here are several ways you can help, but keep checking the blogs
and I'm sure you can think of others:

* I'll put this first, since it's the goal. Find out what it takes to
sponsor a child, and join with me directly in this effort! (You can
learn specifically about sponsoring a child from Uganda or another
country by following this link: it has all the info and even a
number to call for more!)

Please make this your prayer, too!

* Encourage your friends, Bible class or small group members, church
friends, clubs, to join us on the trip by following along through
Heartlight and the blogs. (You can find out more about the trip on
my blog, by using this link.)

* Pray for us! Please pray the God makes this trip effective and that
we remain healthy and can be a blessing to the people of Uganda. (You
can sign up and be part of the prayer team by going to this page
and leaving a prayer for us in the response area at the bottom of
the page.)

* Pray for world peace, especially peace in Africa! Children suffer
worst in all of the world's disasters and wars. Many countries in
Africa are experiencing unsettling times. The Lord wants us to pray
for peace so that the people will have an opportunity to respond to
the good news about Jesus. So please make this your prayer, too!

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession
and thanksgiving be made for everyone -- for kings and all those in
authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all
godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior,
who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the
truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and human
beings, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself as a ransom
for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time (1
Timothy 2:1-6).

Morning & Evening -- Philippians 4:12 and Isaiah 44:22

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, February 10, 2008

MORNING:

"I know how to abound."
-- Philippians 4:12

There are many who know "how to be abased" who have not learned "how to
abound." When they are set upon the top of a pinnacle their heads grow
dizzy, and they are ready to fall. The Christian far oftener disgraces
his profession in prosperity than in adversity. It is a dangerous thing
to be prosperous. The crucible of adversity is a less severe trial to
the Christian than the refining pot of prosperity. Oh, what leanness of
soul and neglect of spiritual things have been brought on through the
very mercies and bounties of God! Yet this is not a matter of
necessity, for the apostle tells us that he knew how to abound. When he
had much he knew how to use it. Abundant grace enabled him to bear
abundant prosperity. When he had a full sail he was loaded with much
ballast, and so floated safely. It needs more than human skill to carry
the brimming cup of mortal joy with a steady hand, yet Paul had learned
that skill, for he declares, "In all things I am instructed both to be
full and to be hungry." It is a divine lesson to know how to be full,
for the Israelites were full once, but while the flesh was yet in their
mouth, the wrath of God came upon them. Many have asked for mercies
that they might satisfy their own hearts' lust. Fulness of bread has
often made fulness of blood, and that has brought on wantonness of
spirit. When we have much of God's providential mercies, it often
happens that we have but little of God's grace, and little gratitude
for the bounties we have received. We are full and we forget God:
satisfied with earth, we are content to do without heaven. Rest assured
it is harder to know how to be full than it is to know how to be
hungry-so desperate is the tendency of human nature to pride and
forgetfulness of God. Take care that you ask in your prayers that God
would teach you "how to be full."

"Let not the gifts thy love bestows
Estrange our hearts from thee."

EVENING:

"I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions,
and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed
thee."
-- Isaiah 44:22

Attentively observe THE INSTRUCTIVE SIMILITUDE: our sins are like a
cloud. As clouds are of many shapes and shades, so are our
transgressions. As clouds obscure the light of the sun, and darken the
landscape beneath, so do our sins hide from us the light of Jehovah's
face, and cause us to sit in the shadow of death. They are earth-born
things, and rise from the miry places of our nature; and when so
collected that their measure is full, they threaten us with storm and
tempest. Alas! that, unlike clouds, our sins yield us no genial
showers, but rather threaten to deluge us with a fiery flood of
destruction. O ye black clouds of sin, how can it be fair weather with
our souls while ye remain?

Let our joyful eye dwell upon THE NOTABLE ACT of divine mercy-"blotting
out." God himself appears upon the scene, and in divine benignity,
instead of manifesting his anger, reveals his grace: he at once and for
ever effectually removes the mischief, not by blowing away the cloud,
but by blotting it out from existence once for all. Against the
justified man no sin remains, the great transaction of the cross has
eternally removed his transgressions from him. On Calvary's summit the
great deed, by which the sin of all the chosen was for ever put away,
was completely and effectually performed.

Practically let us obey THE GRACIOUS COMMAND, "return unto me." Why
should pardoned sinners live at a distance from their God? If we have
been forgiven all our sins, let no legal fear withhold us from the
boldest access to our Lord. Let backslidings be bemoaned, but let us
not persevere in them. To the greatest possible nearness of communion
with the Lord, let us, in the power of the Holy Spirit, strive mightily
to return. O Lord, this night restore us!

My Utmost For His Highest : "Is Your Imagination Of God Starved?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 10, 2008

IS YOUR IMAGINATION OF GOD STARVED?

Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created
these things.

Isaiah 40:26

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+40:26&sr=1

The people of God in Isaiah's day had starved their imagination by
looking on the face of idols, and Isaiah made them look up at the
heavens, that is, he made them begin to use their imagination aright.
Nature to a saint is sacramental. If we are children of God, we have
a tremendous treasure in Nature. In every wind that blows, in every
night and day of the year, in every sign of the sky, in every
blossoming and in every withering of the earth, there is a real
coming of God to us if we will simply use our starved imagination to
realize it.

The test of spiritual concentration is bringing the imagination into
captivity. Is your imagination looking on the face of an idol? Is the
idol yourself? Your work? Your conception of what a worker should be?
Your experience of salvation and sanctification? Then your
imagination of God is starved, and when you are up against
difficulties you have no power, you can only endure in darkness. If
your imagination is starved, do not look back to your own experience;
it is God Whom you need. Go right out of yourself, away from the face
of your idols, away from everything that has been starving your
imagination. Rouse yourself, take the gibe that Isaiah gave the
people, and deliberately turn your imagination to God.

One of the reasons of stultification in prayer is that there is no
imagination, no power of putting ourselves deliberately before God.
We have to learn how to be broken bread and poured out wine on the
line of intercession more than on the line of personal contact.
Imagination is the power God gives a saint to posit himself out of

Praying with Paul : "I Confess!"

I CONFESS!

Romans 10:1-8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+10:1-8

Dear Father,

Thank you that Christ is the end of the law to those who have
faith. Thank you that I am justified by faith in him, not by some
system of merit.

May I not think of Christ as being so high in heaven that he is
inaccessible to us, or, like unbelievers, think of him as being
dead and not available.

May I continually confess with my mouth the belief that is in my
heart: Jesus is Lord! And God raised him from the dead!

Help me rather to know that he is nearer than breathing!

In Jesus' name. Amen.

For the Benefit of People

Jesus answered, "You have read what David did when he and the
people with him were hungry and needed food. It was during
the time of Abiathar the high priest. David went into God's
house and ate the bread that was offered to God. And the law
{of Moses} says that only priests can eat that bread. David
also gave some of the bread to those people with him." Then
Jesus said to the Pharisees, "The Sabbath day was made to
help people. People were not made to be ruled by the Sabbath
day."

-- Mark 2:25-27 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Did God need a day to be honored or did his human creations need a day
to rest? Well, God doesn't "need" anything. It seems clear that the
Sabbath was a day to remember and recognize the blessings and
providence God has placed into the Israelites' lives. At the same time,
we human creatures need to rest. Without rest, we make ourselves
vulnerable to temptation due to fatigue and exhaustion. Without rest,
we can cause damage to our own physical health. Most of all, without
rest, we are tempted to forget the one from whom we've received all of
our many blessings. Then we feel that everything depends upon just us
and this feeling puts more pressure on us to perform. God gave the
Sabbath as a gift to his human creations. So God didn't make the
Sabbath for himself, but for people to have a day to rest from labor,
to remember that God provides them every good and perfect gift, and to
renew their bodies and their spirits. While many don't keep the literal
Sabbath (the seventh day, or Saturday) as a religious observance, we
would do well to remember this Sabbath principal as the rhythm of God's
universe and take time to rest, remember, and refresh.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Forgive me, dear Father, for trying to cram too much into my short
days. I confess that I am sometimes overly anxious to do too many
things. I am honestly seeking your help so that I can live a more
balanced and holy life. Help me as I seek to find time of rest that you
have created for me and my spiritual, physical, and emotional needs. In
Jesus' name. Amen.
