Today's Verse : 2 Peter 1:5-7

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 5, 2008

VERSE:
Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to
goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to
self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to
godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
-- 2 Peter 1:5-7

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Peter+1:5-7

THOUGHT:
Sometimes we get so frightened by the thought of "works-won"
salvation that we forget that love and grace ultimately call us to
action, and not just reflection. Action means effort. That's
exactly what Peter is calling us to make -- "every effort." Peter
explains why this effort is important in the next few verses. "If
we possess these qualities in increasing measure," they help us be
productive in our knowledge of Jesus! Let's be productive! As we
make "every effort," we can be assured that the Holy Spirit is the
power at work producing the fruit that makes effectiveness
possible! (cf. Galatians 5:22-25)

PRAYER:
Mold me and make me, Father, more perfectly conformed to your
will and more perfectly consistent with your character. I do not
pray this for my glory, but so that you can more effectively use me
to share your blessings and grace with those around me. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Temple 3

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Temple 3
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
God said: "Then if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from Heaven and will forgive their sins and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 NLT

Okay, you already know this verse. God promises to hear from Heaven and heal our lands, if we will humple ourselves and pray. You know that promise, but having read the verses that precede it, is it any clearer to you today?

You see, God was pleased with the temple Solomon had built. More than that, He was pleased with Solomon. Solomon had unselfeshly built this temple to honor the Living God! He had recognized that no building would adequately reflect the Holiness or Awesomeness of the LORD. God loved the attitude in which Solomon constructed the temple.

As pleased as God was, He knew that soon Solomon would struggle. He knew that although right now Solomon was fully focussed on the attributes of God, someday Solomon would falter again. If you know the story of Solomon, then you know that Solomon became quite worldly. As King, when Solomon sinned, so did his country. God knew that hard times would come for Solomon, and that Solomon would need help regaining this closeness to God.

So, God prepares Solomon and his people for the struggling times of life, by providing a way to return to Him. In fact, as we saw yesterday, God would even allow the tough times to come and this would all happen so that God's people might "humble themselves and pray and seek His face and turn from their wicked ways".

Are there tough times in your life today? Don't be too surprised, God said there would be. But just as His promise was for Solomon and his kingdom, so they are for you and me. If you can be called one of "My people", then God will indeed "hear from Heaven, and heal our land"!

A new year has begun. Let's begin now praying 2 Chronicles 7:14! Let's watch how God delivers!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Treadmill of Life, by Teresa Bell Kindred

One of my New Year's resolutions is the same one I make every year:
take better care of myself. In an effort to firm up the body parts that
tend to be losing their elasticity, I joined a gym for women last
January. At first I was attending regularly, at least three times a
week, but then something happened and I missed one week, then two, then
three. Well, you know how it goes

I talked to a friend of mine and mentioned my membership at the gym.
She asked which gym and when I told her she replied, "I don't belong to
that one, but I do belong to three others." "Wow, I'm impressed," I
said. "Don't be. I don't go to any of them on a regular basis," she
said. "You're kidding." "No, I'm not. I have really good intentions but
those intentions don't get me very far," she said.

I did get back to the gym and went back to working out three times a
week. Then I started having dental problems, lots of dental problems.
What began as replacing a lost filling escalated to a root canal, and
then several weeks later, an abscessed tooth. It took four hours and
three people to remove that tooth. I took it home and slept with it
under my pillow for a week, but the tooth fairy never came.

After that episode, I got back in the saddle again, or should I say
back on the treadmill again, only to come down with a sinus infection.
I recovered from that; then we decided to build a house, sold ours, and
the packing up and moving process began.

During that chaos, I had a root canal followed by mysterious pain in my
face and jaw for three weeks, and then another root canal. Because I
couldn't identify exactly where the pain was coming from, we did the
wrong tooth the first time. That's right -- two root canals in one
month.

That's right -- two root canals in one month.

One of the walls at the gym is the Wall of Fame with pictures of
members who have achieved their goals. I ran into the owner of the gym
the other day and suggested she create a Wall of Shame next to it with
my picture beneath it.

If my goal is to take better care of myself, shouldn't I include
spiritual goals as well? Many of us want to get in better shape
physically, but what about spiritually? Like my friend who joined three
gyms, I'm afraid many of us have good intentions that don't carry us
very far. We join a church and start out full of enthusiasm, only to
find that the daily business of living distracts us from Bible study,
attending services and prayer. Getting in shape physically takes time
and effort and so does being a Christian.

So again this year, my New Year's resolution is to take better care of
myself, physically and spiritually … and to take out more dental
insurance!

Happy New Year, friends.

So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and steady, always
enthusiastic about the Lord's work, for you know that nothing you
do for the Lord is ever useless (1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT).

Morning & Evening -- 2 Peter 3:18 and Genesis 42:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, January 4, 2008

MORNING:

"Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ."
-- 2 Peter 3:18

"Grow in grace"-not in one grace only, but in all grace. Grow in that
root-grace, faith. Believe the promises more firmly than you have done.
Let faith increase in fulness, constancy, simplicity. Grow also in
love. Ask that your love may become extended, more intense, more
practical, influencing every thought, word, and deed. Grow likewise in
humility. Seek to lie very low, and know more of your own nothingness.
As you grow downward in humility, seek also to grow upward -having
nearer approaches to God in prayer and more intimate fellowship with
Jesus. May God the Holy Spirit enable you to "grow in the knowledge of
our Lord and Saviour." He who grows not in the knowledge of Jesus,
refuses to be blessed. To know him is "life eternal," and to advance in
the knowledge of him is to increase in happiness. He who does not long
to know more of Christ, knows nothing of him yet. Whoever hath sipped
this wine will thirst for more, for although Christ doth satisfy, yet
it is such a satisfaction, that the appetite is not cloyed, but
whetted. If you know the love of Jesus-as the hart panteth for the
water-brooks, so will you pant after deeper draughts of his love. If
you do not desire to know him better, then you love him not, for love
always cries, "Nearer, nearer." Absence from Christ is hell; but the
presence of Jesus is heaven. Rest not then content without an
increasing acquaintance with Jesus. Seek to know more of him in his
divine nature, in his human relationship, in his finished work, in his
death, in his resurrection, in his present glorious intercession, and
in his future royal advent. Abide hard by the Cross, and search the
mystery of his wounds. An increase of love to Jesus, and a more perfect
apprehension of his love to us is one of the best tests of growth in
grace.

EVENING:

"And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him."
-- Genesis 42:8

This morning our desires went forth for growth in our acquaintance with
the Lord Jesus; it may be well to-night to consider a kindred topic,
namely, our heavenly Joseph's knowledge of us. This was most blessedly
perfect long before we had the slightest knowledge of him. "His eyes
beheld our substance, yet being imperfect, and in his book all our
members were written, when as yet there was none of them." Before we
had a being in the world we had a being in his heart. When we were
enemies to him, he knew us, our misery, our madness, and our
wickedness. When we wept bitterly in despairing repentance, and viewed
him only as a judge and a ruler, he viewed us as his brethren well
beloved, and his bowels yearned towards us. He never mistook his
chosen, but always beheld them as objects of his infinite affection.
"The Lord knoweth them that are his," is as true of the prodigals who
are feeding swine as of the children who sit at the table.

But, alas! we knew not our royal Brother, and out of this ignorance
grew a host of sins. We withheld our hearts from him, and allowed him
no entrance to our love. We mistrusted him, and gave no credit to his
words. We rebelled against him, and paid him no loving homage. The Sun
of Righteousness shone forth, and we could not see him. Heaven came
down to earth, and earth perceived it not. Let God be praised, those
days are over with us; yet even now it is but little that we know of
Jesus compared with what he knows of us. We have but begun to study
him, but he knoweth us altogether. It is a blessed circumstance that
the ignorance is not on his side, for then it would be a hopeless case
for us. He will not say to us, "I never knew you," but he will confess
our names in the day of his appearing, and meanwhile will manifest
himself to us as he doth not unto the world.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Why Cannot I Follow Thee Now?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 4, 2008

WHY CANNOT I FOLLOW THEE NOW?

Peter said unto Him, Lord, why cannot I follow Thee now?

John 13:37

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+13:37&sr=1

There are times when you cannot understand why you cannot do what you
want to do. When God brings the blank space, see that you do not fill
it in, but wait. The blank space may come in order to teach you what
sanctification means, or it may come after sanctification to teach
you what service means. Never run before God's guidance. If there is
the slightest doubt, then He is not guiding. Whenever there is doubt
- don't.

In the beginning you may see clearly what God's will is - the
severance of a friendship, the breaking off of a business
relationship, something you feel distinctly before God is His will
for you to do, never do it on the impulse of that feeling. If you do,
you will end in making difficulties that will take years of time to
put right. Wait for God's time to bring it round and He will do it
without any heartbreak or disappointment. When it is a question of
the providential will of God, wait for God to move.

Peter did not wait on God, he forecast in his mind where the test
would come, and the test came where he did not expect it. "I will lay
down my life for Thy sake." Peter's declaration was honest but
ignorant. "Jesus answered him ...The cock shall not crow, till thou
hast denied Me thrice." This was said with a deeper knowledge of
Peter than Peter had of himself. He could not follow Jesus because he
did not know himself, of what he was capable. Natural devotion may be
all very well to attract us to Jesus, to make us feel His
fascination, but it will never make us disciples. Natural devotion
will always deny Jesus somewhere or other.

Praying with Paul : "Mutual Faith"

MUTUAL FAITH

Romans 1:16-17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+1:16-17

Dear Father,

Help us never to be ashamed of the Good News but to have great
pride in it, since it is your power of salvation for everyone, the
Jew first, then the non-Jew.

In it you revealed your righteousness from one degree of faith to
another. As your prophet Habakkuk declared, "The just shall live by
faith."

Grant me, Father, to be filled with faith and to show it in my
faithfulness. In fact, I am able to live every day by my trust in
you! I am sustained by my trust in you!

Thank you for being worthy of my trust! In the name of Jesus.
Amen.

WJD! -- From All Over -- Mark 1:5

From All Over

All the people from Judea and Jerusalem went out to John.
These people told the sins they had done, and then they were
baptized by John in the Jordan River.

-- Mark 1:5 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
John didn't choose the most accessible location to do his ministry.
Instead, he was located in the wilderness. Yet, people came from all
over to hear him. Why? Because they were hungry for spiritual food.
They longed to hear the voice of God through one of his servants, a
true prophet. Distance was no barrier. Confession of their sins and
baptism were not barriers. They were hungry for God. Are we hungry for
God today? What barriers do we let keep us away from seeking God with
all of our hearts?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, help me hunger to know you better and serve you more
faithfully. Please help me destroy any barriers that I have put between
your grace and my need for it. Please, dear Father, never let my pride
ever keep me from hearing your call in my life. In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.
