Today's Verse : Colossians 1:13-14

January 13, 2008

VERSE:
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought
us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have
redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
-- Colossians 1:13-14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+1:13-14

THOUGHT:
Rescued! Redeemed! Forgiven! Those are the three concepts in
this short passage. But, maybe the most important one of all is
represented by the phrase, "Son he loves." God didn't save us with
a plan, or a message, or a clean and immaculate process. Instead,
he took what was most precious to him and offered Jesus up as our
salvation. The cost was enormous. The love involved was
overwhelming. The result is our greatest gift.

PRAYER:
Almighty God and Loving Father, neither my words nor my deeds
could ever repay the gift you have given me in Jesus. Jesus, my
appreciation for your sacrifice moves me to tears of joyful
thanksgiving. For all that you have done, for all that you have
made me, and for all that it cost you, I praise you and offer my
life as a sacrifice of praise. In your name, Lord Jesus, I offer up
my praise. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

I Never Make Misakes, by Russ Lawson

Have you ever read that one saying that seems to perfectly sum up your
life? I did this past week through the avenue of email. Someone sent me
an email with various sayings on it and this one special one was the
one which stood out above all the rest as applying to my life. It read
simply: "I never make misakes!"

That little saying is perfect for my life, because it shows my
inability to get some things right no matter how hard I try or how
simple they seem to be. It goes beyond the mistakes in spelling and
grammar you often find in my writings; I have trouble getting things
right in almost any area of my life.

I remember one of the situations from the old television comedy, "The
Odd Couple." In this particular scene that I often remember, Oscar had
a gambling problem. He had lost most of his money to a friend in a
"friendly" game of cards. The friend really didn't want the money, he
wanted to help Oscar. So, he told Oscar he would give him a chance to
win all of the money back. Oscar said, "OK, what do you want to bet?"

The friend said, "I'll bet you all of your money that you can't type
your name correctly in ten seconds." Oscar was smiling from ear to ear!
He was a professional writer and had typed his name thousands of times.
Oscar sits down in front of the typewriter and tries to type his name
and fails to get it right. His friend offers him another chance and he
blows it again, then another chance and he still can't get it right.

You see, that is me! I am Oscar in that story! Like you, I try. I
really do try to do things in the best possible way. However, sometimes
no matter how much I try I just can't do it. Each morning I pray that
God will lead me and give me the wisdom to recognize his leading. I
pray that he will give me wisdom to make the right decisions in my
daily life and in the areas where my life touches the lives of others.

The truth is that I do make mistakes! In fact, it seems that if you or
I were keeping account, I would have more mistakes than positive
successes.

You may be like me, but I hope you do a better job at life than I do!
If you are like me, you may be wondering, "What's the use? Why even
try? I make mistakes! I say the wrong things. I do the wrong thing! I
have the wrong thoughts and I tend to keep account of those things in
my own heart."

This is the bottom line!

A couple of passages come to mind regarding this kind of struggle. The
apostle Paul talks about how he longs to do the right thing and live by
the law of God. Yet, no matter how hard tries, he fails:

Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life
that is dominated by sin? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ
our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey
God's law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin. So
now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
For the power of the life giving Spirit has freed you through
Christ Jesus from the power of sin that leads to death (Romans
7:24-8:2 NLT).

The apostle John wrote something powerfully similar in his first
letter:

If we say we have no sin [never make a mistake], we are only
fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. But if we
confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and
to cleanse us from every wrong (1 John 1:8-9 NLT).

Along with these Scriptures, let me point out that realizing that we
are all bound to have weaknesses is not an excuse to stop trying to do
what is right. It does not justify our intentional involvement in
disobedience to God's word. John also writes:

If someone says, "I belong to God," but doesn't obey God's
commandments, that person is a liar and does not live in the truth.
But those who obey God's word really do love him. That is the way
to know whether or not we live in him. Those who say they live in
God should live their lives as Christ did (1 John 2:4-6 NLT).

This is the bottom line: No matter how badly you mess up trying to live
for God, no matter how many mistakes you make, God will forgive you if
you are truly trying to obey Him.

You may not even be able to type your name without making a "misake."
But God so loved the world -- including you -- that Christ, His Son,
died to save you. How much incentive does that give you to hang in
there and try a little harder? If you are like me you can say, "I never
make misakes"! And even as you say it, you know that it is God who
makes it true!

Morning & Evening -- 1 Corinthians 3:23 and Job 36:2

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, January 12, 2008

MORNING:

"Ye are Christ's."
-- 1 Corinthians 3:23

"Ye are Christ's." You are his by donation, for the Father gave you to
the Son; his by his bloody purchase, for he counted down the price for
your redemption; his by dedication, for you have consecrated yourself
to him; his by relation, for you are named by his name, and made one of
his brethren and joint-heirs. Labour practically to show the world that
you are the servant, the friend, the bride of Jesus. When tempted to
sin, reply, "I cannot do this great wickedness, for I am Christ's."
Immortal principles forbid the friend of Christ to sin. When wealth is
before you to be won by sin, say that you are Christ's, and touch it
not. Are you exposed to difficulties and dangers? Stand fast in the
evil day, remembering that you are Christ's. Are you placed where
others are sitting down idly, doing nothing? Rise to the work with all
your powers; and when the sweat stands upon your brow, and you are
tempted to loiter, cry, "No, I cannot stop, for I am Christ's. If I
were not purchased by blood, I might be like Issachar, crouching
between two burdens; but I am Christ's, and cannot loiter." When the
siren song of pleasure would tempt you from the path of right, reply,
"Thy music cannot charm me; I am Christ's." When the cause of God
invites thee, give thy goods and thyself away, for thou art Christ's.
Never belie thy profession. Be thou ever one of those whose manners are
Christian, whose speech is like the Nazarene, whose conduct and
conversation are so redolent of heaven, that all who see you may know
that you are the Saviour's, recognizing in you his features of love and
his countenance of holiness. "I am a Roman!" was of old a reason for
integrity; far more, then, let it be your argument for holiness, "I am
Christ's!"

EVENING:

"I have yet to speak on God's behalf."
-- Job 36:2

We ought not to court publicity for our virtue, or notoriety for our
zeal; but, at the same time, it is a sin to be always seeking to hide
that which God has bestowed upon us for the good of others. A Christian
is not to be a village in a valley, but "a city set upon a hill;" he is
not to be a candle under a bushel, but a candle in a candlestick,
giving light to all. Retirement may be lovely in its season, and to
hide one's self is doubtless modest, but the hiding of Christ in us can
never be justified, and the keeping back of truth which is precious to
ourselves is a sin against others and an offence against God. If you
are of a nervous temperament and of retiring disposition, take care
that you do not too much indulge this trembling propensity, lest you
should be useless to the church. Seek in the name of him who was not
ashamed of you to do some little violence to your feelings, and tell to
others what Christ has told to you. If thou canst not speak with
trumpet tongue, use the still small voice. If the pulpit must not be
thy tribune, if the press may not carry on its wings thy words, yet say
with Peter and John, "Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have
give I thee." By Sychar's well talk to the Samaritan woman, if thou
canst not on the mountain preach a sermon; utter the praises of Jesus
in the house, if not in the temple; in the field, if not upon the
exchange; in the midst of thine own household, if thou canst not in the
midst of the great family of man. From the hidden springs within let
sweetly flowing rivulets of testimony flow forth, giving drink to every
passer-by. Hide not thy talent; trade with it; and thou shalt bring in
good interest to thy Lord and Master. To speak for God will be
refreshing to ourselves, cheering to saints, useful to sinners, and
honouring to the Saviour. Dumb children are an affliction to their
parents. Lord, unloose all thy children's tongue.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Have You Ever Been Alone With God?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 12, 2008

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ALONE WITH GOD?

When they were alone, He expounded all things to His
disciples.

Mark 4:34

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mr+4:34&sr=1

Our Solitude with Him. Jesus does not take us alone and expound
things to us all the time; He expounds things to us as we can
understand them. Other lives are parables. God is making us spell out
our own souls. It is slow work, so slow that it takes God all time
and eternity to make a man and woman after His own purpose. The only
way we can be of use to God is to let Him take us through the crooks
and crannies of our own characters. It is astounding how ignorant we
are about ourselves! We do not know envy when we see it, or laziness,
or pride. Jesus reveals to us all that this body has been harbouring
before His grace began to work. How many of us have learned to look
in with courage?

We have to get rid of the idea that we understand ourselves, it is
the last conceit to go. The only One Who understands us is God. The
greatest curse in spiritual life is conceit. If we have ever had a
glimpse of what we are like in the sight of God, we shall never say -
"Oh, I am so unworthy," because we shall know we are, beyond the
possibility of stating it. As long as we are not quite sure that we
are unworthy, God will keep narrowing us in until He gets us alone.
Wherever there is any element of pride or of conceit, Jesus cannot
expound a thing. He will take us through the disappointment of a
wounded pride of intellect, through disappointment of heart. He will
reveal inordinate affection - things over which we never thought He
would have to get us alone. We listen to many things in classes, but
they are not an exposition to us yet. They will be when God gets us
alone over them.

Praying with Paul : "None Righteous"

NONE RIGHTEOUS

Romans 2:25-3:20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+2:25-3:20

Dear Father, holy God,

Allow me to bear the marks of your covenant in my heart and my
mind. May I be a spiritual descendant of Abraham. Let my praise be
not from men but from you!

Help me understand that all human beings are under the power of
sin, as it is written, "None is righteous, no not one!"

I ask forgiveness for all my sins by reason of your perfect
expiation put forth in Christ Jesus. Clothe me with his
righteousness, not my own. Having nothing to claim for myself, I
put my trust in him.

In the name of Jesus, the all-sufficient sacrifice for sin and my
holy intercessor, I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- The Near Kingdom -- Mark 1:14-15

The Near Kingdom

After this, John was put into prison. Jesus went into Galilee
and told people the Good News from God. Jesus said, "The
right time is now here. The kingdom of God is near. Change
your hearts and lives and believe the Good News!"

-- Mark 1:14-15 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Mark wants us to see that Jesus' baptism by John, Jesus' temptations in
the wilderness, and John's arrest lead to the beginning of Jesus'
ministry. Jesus goes to Galilee, the place of ministry in Mark's
Gospel. He begins to preach "God's Good News" about the nearness of
God's Kingdom. This nearness of the Kingdom and this presentation of
Good News mean people must respond by turning away from their sins.
God's will must reign in our hearts if we are to receive this Kingdom.
God's Good News must call us from our sin if we are to experience the
power of this Kingdom in our own lives. So the question comes to you
and to me: have I welcomed the Good News and turned from my sins?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and righteous Father, God of mercy and grace, I believe that your
Son has brought me your Good News. I believe you want to have the power
of your Kingdom reign in my heart and to be seen in the fruit of
righteousness produced in my life. I gladly offer you my heart, soul,
strength, and mind to show you my love for you and my desire to honor
you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
