Today's Verse : Genesis 2:18

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 18, 2008

VERSE:
The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I
will make a helper suitable for him."
-- Genesis 2:18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Genesis+2:18

THOUGHT:
Two powerful principles are presented here. First, God looks out
for us and blesses us with what we need most. Second, God made us
for relationship: relationship with him and with a life partner.
Yes, Matthew 19 and 1 Corinthians 7 both emphasize that some are
gifted to be single, but most of us are made to be complete with
another. Marriage and a marriage partner are a gift from God. Let's
live like they are!

PRAYER:
Holy God, I want to thank you for looking out for my needs. So
many times I ask you for what I want, not what I need. Thank you
for doing what is best for me and not what I want! Now, dear
Father, please help me treat the significant people in my life as
gifts from you. In the name of Jesus, your ultimate gift, I pray.
Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Impulse Buyer, by Steve Higginbotham

Hello, my name is Steve Higginbotham and I am an impulse buyer. There,
I feel better now. But it's true, I'm the kind of guy for which they
make commercials and design eye-catching packaging. When I go shopping,
if I see something on the shelf I like, I put it in the buggy.
Consequently, my children never miss an opportunity to go shopping with
me, and my wife rarely sends me.

But this "impulse buying" has sometimes led to some very poor
purchases. You see, I don't check the price like I should, and it's not
until I'm at the checkout that I realize how expensive some items are.
Well, at this point, I'm too embarrassed to say anything. I don't want
to hold people up in the line behind me by putting it back. So I
proceed with the purchase that has now lost its luster.

There will be a "checkout" some day!

Now, if I can change subjects, is that not precisely why we choose to
sin? Impulse. If we fully comprehended the cost before the transaction
was made, we wouldn't make it. But we go on our impulse. Immediate
gratification. And we don't worry about the price until we get to the
checkout.

Well friends, let me remind you that there will be a "checkout" some
day, and we will have to pay for our "purchases." Therefore, I would
encourage you, as well as myself, to learn self-discipline, and make
life-choices based, not upon today, but upon eternity.

[Jesus said] "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth
nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for
where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew
6:19-21 NASB).

Morning & Evening -- Genesis 25:11 and Ezekiel 35:10

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, February 17, 2008

MORNING:

"Isaac dwelt by the well Lahai-roi."
-- Genesis 25:11

Hagar had once found deliverance there and Ishmael had drank from the
water so graciously revealed by the God who liveth and seeth the sons
of men; but this was a merely casual visit, such as worldlings pay to
the Lord in times of need, when it serves their turn. They cry to him
in trouble, but forsake him in prosperity. Isaac dwelt there, and made
the well of the living and all-seeing God his constant source of
supply. The usual tenor of a man's life, the dwelling of his soul, is
the true test of his state. Perhaps the providential visitation
experienced by Hagar struck Isaac's mind, and led him to revere the
place; its mystical name endeared it to him; his frequent musings by
its brim at eventide made him familiar with the well; his meeting
Rebecca there had made his spirit feel at home near the spot; but best
of all, the fact that he there enjoyed fellowship with the living God,
had made him select that hallowed ground for his dwelling. Let us learn
to live in the presence of the living God; let us pray the Holy Spirit
that this day, and every other day, we may feel, "Thou God seest me."
May the Lord Jehovah be as a well to us, delightful, comforting,
unfailing, springing up unto eternal life. The bottle of the creature
cracks and dries up, but the well of the Creator never fails; happy is
he who dwells at the well, and so has abundant and constant supplies
near at hand. The Lord has been a sure helper to others: his name is
Shaddai, God All-sufficient; our hearts have often had most delightful
intercourse with him; through him our soul has found her glorious
Husband, the Lord Jesus; and in him this day we live, and move, and
have our being; let us, then, dwell in closest fellowship with him.
Glorious Lord, constrain us that we may never leave thee, but dwell by
the well of the living God.

EVENING:

"Whereas the Lord was there."
-- Ezekiel 35:10

Edom's princes saw the whole country left desolate, and counted upon
its easy conquest; but there was one great difficulty in their
way-quite unknown to them-"The Lord was there"; and in his presence lay
the special security of the chosen land. Whatever may be the
machinations and devices of the enemies of God's people, there is still
the same effectual barrier to thwart their design. The saints are God's
heritage, and he is in the midst of them, and will protect his own.
What comfort this assurance yields us in our troubles and spiritual
conflicts! We are constantly opposed, and yet perpetually preserved!
How often Satan shoots his arrows against our faith, but our faith
defies the power of hell's fiery darts; they are not only turned aside,
but they are quenched upon its shield, for "the Lord is there." Our
good works are the subjects of Satan's attacks. A saint never yet had a
virtue or a grace which was not the target for hellish bullets: whether
it was hope bright and sparkling, or love warm and fervent, or patience
all-enduring, or zeal flaming like coals of fire, the old enemy of
everything that is good has tried to destroy it. The only reason why
anything virtuous or lovely survives in us is this, "the Lord is
there."

If the Lord be with us through life, we need not fear for our dying
confidence; for when we come to die, we shall find that "the Lord is
there"; where the billows are most tempestuous, and the water is most
chill, we shall feel the bottom, and know that it is good: our feet
shall stand upon the Rock of Ages when time is passing away. Beloved,
from the first of a Christian's life to the last, the only reason why
he does not perish is because "the Lord is there." When the God of
everlasting love shall change and leave his elect to perish, then may
the Church of God be destroyed; but not till then, because it is
written, JEHOVAH SHAMMAH, "The Lord is there."

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Initiative Against Depression"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 17, 2008

THE INITIATIVE AGAINST DEPRESSION

Arise and eat.

1 Kings 19:5

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1ki+19:5&sr=1

The angel did not give Elijah a vision, or explain the Scriptures to
him, or do anything remarkable; he told Elijah to do the most
ordinary thing, viz., to get up and eat. If we were never depressed
we should not be alive; it is the nature of a crystal never to be
depressed. A human being is capable of depression, otherwise there
would be no capacity for exaltation. There are things that are
calculated to depress, things that are of the nature of death; and in
taking an estimate of yourself, always take into account the capacity
for depression.

When the Spirit of God comes He does not give us visions, He tells us
to do the most ordinary things conceivable. Depression is apt to turn
us away from the ordinary commonplace things of God's creation, but
whenever God comes, the inspiration is to do the most natural simple
thing - the things we would never have imagined God was in, and as we
do them we find He is there. The inspiration which comes to us in
this way is an initiative against depression; we have to do the next
thing and do it in the inspiration of God. If we do a thing in order
to overcome depression, we deepen the depression; but if the Spirit
of God makes us feel intuitively that we must do the thing, and we do
it, the depression is gone. Immediately we arise and obey, we enter
on a higher plane of life.

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

A HOLY TEMPLE

Romans 12:1-2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+12:1-2

Dear Father, dweller of my temple,

Please give me the mind of Christ and make my body a temple of the
spirit of holiness which is his.

Make me holy through and through. May my whole spirit, soul, and
body be kept blameless by your power until the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ.

I trust you to do this because you are the one who has called me,
and you are faithful. Your word says that you will do it!

By the authority of Jesus and in his name I ask for this growth in
grace. Amen.

More Than a Title

Jesus saw the many people. So he told his followers to get a
small boat and make it ready for him. Jesus wanted the boat
so that the many, many people would not push against him.
Jesus had healed many people. So all the sick people were
pushing toward him to touch him. Some people had evil spirits
{from the devil} inside them. When the evil spirits saw
Jesus, they bowed before him and shouted, "You are the Son of
God!" But Jesus commanded the spirits strongly not to tell
people who he was.

-- Mark 3:9-12 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus is more than a miracle maker and was never a title seeker.
Instead, Jesus ministers to show God's love and compassion, yet does
not want his ministry of preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom thwarted
by those who think they know who he is. So often today, we know Jesus
by his titles as Christian insiders. In times of distress, we want him
to be our miracle maker. Jesus, however, is Lord and Master. We come to
him and receive his grace, mercy, salvation, comfort, life, and Spirit.
Yet Jesus is still Lord. He is not our servant boy and he is much more
than any title. He will define who he is by what he does. In Mark's
Gospel, this means that he will go to the Cross and define what it
means to be Son of God and the Christ (Messiah). In the process, he
also sets us an example for how we should live -- a life of sacrificial
service to bring others to God. So if Jesus is to be more than a title
for us, then his life must be seen in us!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and loving God, my Abba Father, let the beauty, passion,
conviction, love, commitment, and obedience of your Son be seen in my
life. Teach me what it means for Jesus not only to be my Savior, but
also to be my Lord. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
