Quotemeal: "If the devil were wise ..."

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / QUOTEMEAL from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

If the devil were wise enough and would stand by in silence and
let the gospel be preached, he would suffer less harm. For when
there is no battle for the gospel it rusts and it finds no cause
and no occasion to show its vigor and power. Therefore, nothing
better can befall the gospel than that the world should fight it
with force and cunning.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Forgiveness?, by Ron Rose

She came in complaining about my sermons always being about forgiveness
and grace ... I needed to come down harder on the sinners and in her
words, "nail them."

After her rant, I asked, "So, you've got forgiveness and grace all
worked out in your own life?"

"Well, Ron, there are some things you can't turn loose of, things that
don't deserve grace, or forgiveness. That's just the way it is. I know
it's that way in my family."

She leaned over my desk and revealed a heart hardened by resentment and
bitterness, "No, forgiveness is not an option. I've been hurt too
much."

The grudge was too embedded. And her spiritual life was powerless and
trapped in the wilderness. Lack of forgiveness had turned in a
critical, spirit of judgment.

She wanted me to make everyone else as miserable as she was ... as long
as she was in charge, of course.

A year later she left the church ... looking for harder preaching.

On the other side of her story is Reginald Denny. Remember him?

Forgiveness doesn't make sense!

Years ago, Reginald Denny drove his truck into the riots of South
Central Los Angeles and the video cameras captured every detail of two
men smashing his truck window with a brick, hauling him from the cab
and beating him with a broken bottle and kicking him until the side of
his face was caved in.

Then at the trial, in spite of protests from his own lawyers, Denny
walked over to the mothers of the two defendants, hugged them and told
them he forgave them. The mothers responded with hugs and tears.

How could he do that? One commentator stated, "Well you know, Denny did
suffer some brain damage."

Forgiveness doesn't make sense: sometimes it just seems like nothing is
more important than hanging on to the grudge ... sometimes "turning
loose" is nothing but a slogan. But, then God steps in and a miracle
happens ... Turning loose becomes an experience.

Don't forget three basics:

1. Forgiveness doesn't mean that you condone what was done.

2. Forgiveness doesn't depend on the other person's apology ... it's
the experience of finding inner peace.

3. Forgiveness is a gift for you ... by offering it, your life is no
longer controlled by what someone else has done. The weight of hurt
and resentment and bitterness are released and you are finally
free.

God has forgiven ... so what are you going to do?

Morning & Evening -- Judges 16:6 and Psalms 25:5

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

MORNING:

"Tell me I pray thee wherein thy great strength lieth."
-- Judges 16:6

Where lies the secret strength of faith? It lies in the food it feeds
on; for faith studies what the promise is-an emanation of divine grace,
an overflowing of the great heart of God; and faith says, "My God could
not have given this promise, except from love and grace; therefore it
is quite certain his Word will be fulfilled." Then faith thinketh, "Who
gave this promise?" It considereth not so much its greatness, as, "Who
is the author of it?" She remembers that it is God who cannot lie-God
omnipotent, God immutable; and therefore concludeth that the promise
must be fulfilled; and forward she advances in this firm conviction.
She remembereth, why the promise was given,-namely, for God's glory,
and she feels perfectly sure that God's glory is safe, that he will
never stain his own escutcheon, nor mar the lustre of his own crown;
and therefore the promise must and will stand. Then faith also
considereth the amazing work of Christ as being a clear proof of the
Father's intention to fulfil his word. "He that spared not his own Son,
but freely delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also
freely give us all things?" Moreover faith looks back upon the past,
for her battles have strengthened her, and her victories have given her
courage. She remembers that God never has failed her; nay, that he
never did once fail any of his children. She recollecteth times of
great peril, when deliverance came; hours of awful need, when as her
day her strength was found, and she cries, "No, I never will be led to
think that he can change and leave his servant now. Hitherto the Lord
hath helped me, and he will help me still." Thus faith views each
promise in its connection with the promise-giver, and, because she does
so, can with assurance say, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life!"

EVENING:

"Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of
my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day."
-- Psalms 25:5

When the believer has begun with trembling feet to walk in the way of
the Lord, he asks to be still led onward like a little child upheld by
its parent's helping hand, and he craves to be further instructed in
the alphabet of truth. Experimental teaching is the burden of this
prayer. David knew much, but he felt his ignorance, and desired to be
still in the Lord's school: four times over in two verses he applies
for a scholarship in the college of grace. It were well for many
professors if instead of following their own devices, and cutting out
new paths of thought for themselves, they would enquire for the good
old ways of God's own truth, and beseech the Holy Ghost to give them
sanctified understandings and teachable spirits. "For thou art the God
of my salvation." The Three-One Jehovah is the Author and Perfecter of
salvation to his people. Reader, is he the God of your salvation? Do
you find in the Father's election, in the Son's atonement, and in the
Spirit's quickening, all the grounds of your eternal hopes? If so, you
may use this as an argument for obtaining further blessings; if the
Lord has ordained to save you, surely he will not refuse to instruct
you in his ways. It is a happy thing when we can address the Lord with
the confidence which David here manifests, it gives us great power in
prayer, and comfort in trial. "On thee do I wait all the day." Patience
is the fair handmaid and daughter of faith; we cheerfully wait when we
are certain that we shall not wait in vain. It is our duty and our
privilege to wait upon the Lord in service, in worship, in expectancy,
in trust all the days of our life. Our faith will be tried faith, and
if it be of the true kind, it will bear continued trial without
yielding. We shall not grow weary of waiting upon God if we remember
how long and how graciously he once waited for us.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Will To Loyalty"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 8, 2008

THE WILL TO LOYALTY

Choose you this day whom ye will serve.

Joshua 24:15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=jos+24:15&sr=1

Will is the whole man active. I cannot give up my will, I must
exercise it. I must will to obey, and I must will to receive God's
Spirit. When God gives a vision of truth it is never a question of
what He will do, but of what we will do. The Lord has been putting
before us all some big propositions, and the best thing to do is to
remember what you did when you were touched by God before - the time
when you were saved, or first saw Jesus, or realized some truth. It
was easy then to yield allegiance to God; recall those moments now as
the Spirit of God brings before you some new proposition.

"Choose you this day whom ye will serve." It is a deliberate
calculation, not something into which you drift easily; and
everything else is in abeyance until you decide. The proposition is
between you and God; do not confer with flesh and blood about it.
With every new proposition other people get more and more "out of
it," that is where the strain comes. God allows the opinion of His
saints to matter to you, and yet you are brought more and more out of
the certainty that others understand the step you are taking. You
have no business to find out where God is leading, the only thing God
will explain to you is Himself.

Profess to Him - 'I will be loyal.' Immediately you choose to be
loyal to Jesus Christ, you are a witness against yourself. Don't
consult other Christians, but profess before Him - I will serve Thee.
Will to be loyal - and give other people credit for being loyal too.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Watch for the Little Ones

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Watch for the Little Ones
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in Heaven always see the face of my Father in Heaven." Matthew 18:10 NIV

Jesus wasn't kidding. He was being very serious when He told the disciples and others to watch after the "little ones". He had already said that it would be better for one to have a large stone tied around your neck and drown in the ocean than to cause a younger Christian to sin. And He said that in order to be saved, we must come like a little child.

Jesus put great emphasis on child-like faith, because a child has a trusting heart. When my boys were smaller they thought I was the smartest man in the world. When I told them something, they believed it. It was so easy for me to hurt their feelings or disappoint them at that time of their life, because they believe so easily and trusted so greatly. If I said we "might" go to the movies, we were as good as there. Jesus wants that kind of faith from u s today. We need to trust Him as a child trusts a mother or father.

But, we, as "mature" Christians, need to be very careful not to influence our new brothers and sisters the wrong way. You have heard the joke before. A new member joins the church eager to get started serving. Some of the elder people of the church get a little resentful, thinking that this new person comes in seeking all the attention. Then one of the senior members says to the rest of his friends, "Don't worry, give him some time and he'll come around. Once he's been here a while, he'll quit doing anything just like the rest of us."

We need to watch that we don't cause another to stumble or assign someone a lower status, just because of their "seniority" in the church (there is none you know). This verse says that "their" angels are always close to God. That sounds like a pretty high status to me.

Jesus wasn't kidding. We need to take very serious how we treat newer Christians. We may even need to become disciplers. What a concept? Bringing someone along in the faith; walking with them; teaching them so that they may grow to be more like Christ. Great idea! I wonder Who thought of that? (Perhaps Jesus?)

Watch out for the little ones! The angels are!

Praying with Paul : "The Fruit of the Spirit"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

Galatians 5:22-26

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+5:22-26

Dear Father, grower of spiritual fruit,

Let the fruit of the Spirit blossom, mature, and ripen in my life:
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these. Let me
possess them!

Since I belong to Christ, I have crucified the flesh with its
passions and desires. Let me live by the Spirit. Let me walk by the
Spirit!

Let me show no self-conceit, give no provocation, have no envy
toward anyone else. Let me live in, through, and for Christ Jesus,
as he lives in, through, and for me and his whole church.

In the name of Jesus I ask you to perfect us, whatever that may
take, and give us the grace to endure your renovation process.
Amen.

God Joined

"God has joined those two people together. So no person
should separate them."

-- Mark 10:9 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
God has the power to make two people one. Marriage is not about a
wedding, but about a man and a woman entering into a covenant
relationship with God. God is the greater party in the covenant. The
man and the woman give their highest allegiance and commitment to God
when they marry. There will be times when their spouse will
unfortunately disappoint them or let them down. But, God wants them to
remember that their highest priority is not treating their spouse as he
or she deserves, but as God would have them be treated. Honoring God in
the way they treat each other is the key to marriage as God sees it.
God wants husbands and wives to understand that breaking a marriage
apart is an offense against God -- he is the one who makes couples one
and the one with whom they enter into covenant relationship. God hates
covenants made with him to be broken.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, please give your people a deeper appreciation of what it means
to enter into covenant with you when they marry. I worry about all the
money we spend on wedding ceremonies when there is so little
appreciation for the covenant relationship that begins when a couple is
married. Help me, O God, to be a covenant-keeper and a person who
encourages others to be loyal to you and the covenants they make with
you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Ezekiel 7:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 8, 2008

VERSE:
"I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger
against you; I will judge you according to your conduct and repay
you for all your detestable practices."
-- Ezekiel 7:8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ezekiel+7:8

THOUGHT:
Because God's people had repeatedly rebelled and chosen to turn
an unhearing ear toward his will, God is about to let them face the
consequences of their own sinfulness. He is ready to judge them
using the harshest of standards because of their entrenched
rebellion. We must remember that he wants us to be a holy people
just as much as he did his Old Testament people. Let's be faithful
to him, no matter the values of our culture.

PRAYER:
O God, please do not rebuke me in your wrath, but encourage me
to live for you no matter my circumstances or my culture. I want to
be faithful to you in all I do, say, and think. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.
