=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Preaching Your Own Funeral, by Tim Archer

There were two brothers who were the richest men in that small town.
They were also the meanest and most immoral of men. When one of them
died, the other went to the preacher of the local church and asked him
to do the funeral. He said that he would give the church $25,000 if the
preacher would say that his brother was a saint. "But I can't do that!"
said the preacher, "Everyone knows what kind of man your brother was."
But the more he thought about it, he realized that the church really
needed that money. So on the day of the funeral he got up and said,
"This man was a lying, cheating, stealing, wicked old man. But next to
his brother, he was a saint."

Someday, when we're gone, somebody is going to have to stand up and say
a few words about our lives. When they stand up to talk about us, will
it be an easy task or a hard one? Will they struggle to find something
good to say or will they struggle to choose between all of the
uplifting stories told of your life?

I remember when I was a student at Abilene Christian University, Jim
Dotson, the preacher at Brookwood Way Church of Christ in Mansfield,
Ohio, preached a funeral sermon that became famous. His sermon was
videotaped and can still be viewed in the ACU library. Dotson's sermon
did not become famous because of its content nor because of the
outstanding delivery. Dotson's funeral sermon became famous because he
preached his own funeral. Dying of cancer, he videotaped the funeral
sermon. He spoke about the Christian's victory over death.

It's a remarkable thing to preach your own funeral. That is, it's
remarkable to videotape yourself speaking so that everyone hears the
exact words that you wanted them to hear. But the fact is, we all do
our own funeral sermons. By the way we live. No matter what the
minister says at the service itself, our lives will leave behind their
own testimony, for good or for bad.

We're writing our own funeral sermon, day by day

So what does your sermon sound like so far? Is it full of jokes and
stories, but little substance? Is it a shining example of what everyone
would like their life to be? Or, to borrow a phrase from a calendar I
saw, is the main purpose of your life to serve as a warning for others?

Make someone's job a little easier! Don't make them hunt and scrounge
for something good to say. Don't make it hard for them to find words of
comfort for those left behind. Live such a life that your funeral will
be a celebration of triumph, a joyous remembrance of a life well lived.
To know more about how to do that, write to me at tim@hopeforlife.org

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 22:1 and Psalms 28:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

MORNING:

"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
-- Psalms 22:1

We here behold the Saviour in the depth of his sorrows. No other place
so well shows the griefs of Christ as Calvary, and no other moment at
Calvary is so full of agony as that in which his cry rends the air-"My
God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" At this moment physical
weakness was united with acute mental torture from the shame and
ignominy through which he had to pass; and to make his grief culminate
with emphasis, he suffered spiritual agony surpassing all expression,
resulting from the departure of his Father's presence. This was the
black midnight of his horror; then it was that he descended the abyss
of suffering. No man can enter into the full meaning of these words.
Some of us think at times that we could cry, "My God, my God, why hast
thou forsaken me?" There are seasons when the brightness of our
Father's smile is eclipsed by clouds and darkness; but let us remember
that God never does really forsake us. It is only a seeming forsaking
with us, but in Christ's case it was a real forsaking. We grieve at a
little withdrawal of our Father's love; but the real turning away of
God's face from his Son, who shall calculate how deep the agony which
it caused him?

In our case, our cry is often dictated by unbelief: in his case, it was
the utterance of a dreadful fact, for God had really turned away from
him for a season. O thou poor, distressed soul, who once lived in the
sunshine of God's face, but art now in darkness, remember that he has
not really forsaken thee. God in the clouds is as much our God as when
he shines forth in all the lustre of his grace; but since even the
thought that he has forsaken us gives us agony, what must the woe of
the Saviour have been when he exclaimed, "My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?"

EVENING:

"Lift them up for ever."
-- Psalms 28:9

God's people need lifting up. They are very heavy by nature. They have
no wings, or, if they have, they are like the dove of old which lay
among the pots; and they need divine grace to make them mount on wings
covered with silver, and with feathers of yellow gold. By nature sparks
fly upward, but the sinful souls of men fall downward. O Lord, "lift
them up for ever!" David himself said, "Unto thee, O God, do I lift up
my soul," and he here feels the necessity that other men's souls should
be lifted up as well as his own. When you ask this blessing for
yourself, forget not to seek it for others also. There are three ways
in which God's people require to be lifted up. They require to be
elevated in character. Lift them up, O Lord; do not suffer thy people
to be like the world's people! The world lieth in the wicked one; lift
them out of it! The world's people are looking after silver and gold,
seeking their own pleasures, and the gratification of their lusts; but,
Lord, lift thy people up above all this; keep them from being
"muck-rakers," as John Bunyan calls the man who was always scraping
after gold! Set thou their hearts upon their risen Lord and the
heavenly heritage! Moreover, believers need to be prospered in
conflict. In the battle, if they seem to fall, O Lord, be pleased to
give them the victory. If the foot of the foe be upon their necks for a
moment, help them to grasp the sword of the Spirit, and eventually to
win the battle. Lord, lift up thy children's spirits in the day of
conflict; let them not sit in the dust, mourning for ever. Suffer not
the adversary to vex them sore, and make them fret; but if they have
been, like Hannah, persecuted, let them sing of the mercy of a
delivering God.

We may also ask our Lord to lift them up at the last! Lift them up by
taking them home, lift their bodies from the tomb, and raise their
souls to thine eternal kingdom in glory.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Relapse Of Concentration"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 15, 2009

THE RELAPSE OF CONCENTRATION

But the high places were not taken away out of Israel;
nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days.

2 Chronicles 15:17
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2ch+15:17&sr=1

Asa was incomplete in his external obedience, he was right in the
main but not entirely right. Beware of the thing of which you say -
"Oh, that does not matter much." The fact that it does not matter
much to you may mean that it matters a very great deal to God.
Nothing is a light matter with a child of God. How much longer are
some of us going to keep God trying to teach us one thing? He never
loses patience. You say - "I know I am right with God"; but still the
"high places" remain, there is something over which you have not
obeyed. Are you protesting that your heart is right with God, and yet
is there something in your life about which He has caused you to
doubt? Whenever there is doubt, quit immediately, no matter what it
is. Nothing is a mere detail.

Are there some things in connection with your bodily life, your
intellectual life, upon which you are not concentrating at all? You
are all right in the main but you are slipshod; there is a relapse on
the line of concentration. You no more need a holiday from spiritual
concentration than your heart needs a holiday from beating. You
cannot have a moral holiday and remain moral, nor can you have a
spiritual holiday and remain spiritual. God wants you to be entirely
His, and this means that you have to watch to keep yourself fit. It
takes a tremendous amount of time. Some of us expect to "clear the
numberless ascensions" in about two minutes.

Praying with Paul : "Heeding Warnings"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

HEEDING WARNINGS

1 Corinthians 10:1-5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+10:1-5

Dear Father, righteous judge of all mankind,

Help me take to heart the examples of disobedience and punishment
set by your ancient people as they wandered through the wilderness.

Although they were baptized into Moses in the cloud and the sea,
and drank of the spiritual food and spiritual water, flowing
backward through time from that spiritual Rock, which was Christ
himself. In spite of all this, they got lost in the wilderness
because they displeased you.

O Father, let me take to heart these warnings, and not desire
anything evil, as they did, nor to worship idols, as they did, or
to engage in immorality, as they did. May I never put you to the
test or grumble about your providence, as they did.

In the name of Jesus grant me patience to persevere until the end.
Amen.

WJD! -- Authority -- Matthew 9:4-8

Authority

Jesus knew they were thinking this. So Jesus said, "Why are
you thinking such evil thoughts? The Son of Man has power on
earth to forgive sins. But how can I prove this to you? Maybe
you are thinking it was easy for me to say, 'Your sins are
forgiven.' {No one could see if it really happened.} But what
if I say to the man, 'Stand up and walk'? Then you will be
able to see that I really have this power." So Jesus said to
the paralyzed man, "Stand up. Take your mat and go home." And
the man stood up and went home. The people saw this and they
were amazed. The people praised God for giving power like
this to people.

-- Matthew 9:4-8 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus has authority! All authority! Not just on the earth, but in
heaven. While we may be amazed at the miracles of Jesus -- his power
over nature, his power over disease, his power over death, and his
power over sin are of ultimate importance to us. He can liberate us
from sin's hold and set us free. We can be forgiven, cleansed and
delivered from sin. While giving a paralytic back his ability to walk
is amazing, giving us forgiveness of sin is saving!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty God, thank you for sending Jesus to be the atoning sacrifice
for my sin. Thank you that you loved me so much that you emptied heaven
of your sinless Son so he could be the ransom for my sin. Thank you
that I can stand before you without spot or blemish and be free from
any accusation, holy in your sight, because of Jesus' forgiveness. It
is in Jesus precious name I pray. Amen.

VERSE:
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits
of those who have fallen asleep.
-- 1 Corinthians 15:20
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+15:20

THOUGHT:
"Why do you seek the living among the dead?" These words of the
angel to the women who came to Jesus' tomb are also God's words to
us. Jesus is risen! Not only that, he is the firstfruits from the
dead. He is the guarantee that God's harvest will happen; he is our
assurance that we, too, will be raised. Death no longer has a hold
on us! We are God's eternal children and death cannot separate us
from his presence or his love!

PRAYER:
Father God, I praise you for your redeeming grace. I rejoice in
your conquest over Satan and over his power to wound and destroy
through death. I thank you for your power over the grave. Thank you
for raising Jesus from the dead and giving me the assurance of life
forever with you. Please bless me, dear Father, with a life that
reflects the power that you have now working in me. In Jesus' name
I pray. Amen.
