Mustard Seed Thoughts: Stephen: Receive My Spirit

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Stephen: Receive My Spirit
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Acts 7:59 NIV

Stephen was one of the greatest Christian martyrs of the early church. May you and I never have to suffer that way for the sake of our call! But, may we be willing to, should the need arise!

Stephen was not ashamed of the gospel. In the 7th chapter of Acts, we read one of the greatest sermons in the New Testament. Stephen reminds the Sanhedrin, the Jewish rulers, how God had called Abraham to go to a land he could not see. He told of Moses and the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. And, he told about Jesus, the prophesized Messiah, who had come to save His people from their sins. Stephen also told them that they were the ones who sentenced Jesus to death on the cross.

His words were powerful, direct, and true! It was a toe-stomping, finger-pointing, shoe-fitting delivery of the gospel! The Sanhedrin were not pleased. At once they started to s tone Stephen severely, eventually causing his death.

However, Stephen stood firm, even praising God in the midst of the brutality. What a testimony! What a picture of faith! When it was the worst of days for Stephen, he was still looking Heavenward! Can you imagine the coming-home victory celebration Heaven had for Stephen?

What about you (and me)? When life is stoning us-- when the bills are piling up, when your marriage is failing, when your children are rebelling, when your health is drifting away, whatever the stones in your life are-- do you still keep your eyes looking for our Redeemer? Are you still clinging to the Cross?

As the stones come this week, may we still say, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Reluctant Leadership?, by Mike Barres

After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent
them two by two before His face into every city and place where He
Himself was about to go. Then He said to them, "The harvest truly
is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the
harvest to send out laborers into His harvest" (Luke 10:1-2 NKJV).

The need is great in the time in which we find ourselves. The message
of hope in Jesus Christ is our only answer. And as the scripture quoted
above describes, we need far more laborers to go out and do the
Father's work. And we need leaders to help make that happen. But,
leaders are in short supply!

Moses appointed leaders. King David appointed leaders. The Church at
Jerusalem had leaders. The books of 1 Timothy and Titus talk about the
qualifications of leaders. In fact, any time in scripture that there
are groups of people, we also find a great need for leaders to
coordinate, encourage and give direction to those people. Many folks,
in every era including today, have been reluctant to lead.

Guess what? These reluctant leaders are in good company.

God is not just looking at our ability, but also at our availability.

Gideon felt that he lacked what was needed to be a leader. Moses
mentioned his weaknesses and his poor public speaking along with his
doubt about his leadership potential. Saul tried to hide. Samuel nearly
overlooked King David.

There seems to be a leadership shortage today. This is not new, either.
Paul mentions this problem in describing Timothy as his son in the
faith:

I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I
also may be encouraged when I know your state. For I have no one
like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek
their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus (Philippians
2:19-21).

God is not just looking at our ability, but also at our availability.
If we walk in humility before God, trusting in His power to help and
sustain us, He can use us. The best kind of leader is a servant leader,
one who really cares about others as the Lord does. Sometimes others
see leadership potential in us and we don't see it. So if someone asks
you to lead, in a task great or small, prayerfully consider it. The
need is great. We don't want to self-appoint ourselves to leadership,
but we should all have a willingness to do whatever the Lord wants us
to do. If we follow His lead, He can use us to lead!

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 67:6 and Psalms 10:16

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, April 27, 2009

MORNING:

"God, even our own God."
-- Psalms 67:6

It is strange how little use we make of the spiritual blessings which
God gives us, but it is stranger still how little use we make of God
himself. Though he is "our own God," we apply ourselves but little to
him, and ask but little of him. How seldom do we ask counsel at the
hands of the Lord! How often do we go about our business, without
seeking his guidance! In our troubles how constantly do we strive to
bear our burdens ourselves, instead of casting them upon the Lord, that
he may sustain us! This is not because we may not, for the Lord seems
to say, "I am thine, soul, come and make use of me as thou wilt; thou
mayst freely come to my store, and the oftener the more welcome." It is
our own fault if we make not free with the riches of our God. Then,
since thou hast such a friend, and he invites thee, draw from him
daily. Never want whilst thou hast a God to go to; never fear or faint
whilst thou hast God to help thee; go to thy treasure and take whatever
thou needest-there is all that thou canst want. Learn the divine skill
of making God all things to thee. He can supply thee with all, or,
better still, he can be to thee instead of all. Let me urge thee, then,
to make use of thy God. Make use of him in prayer. Go to him often,
because he is thy God. O, wilt thou fail to use so great a privilege?
Fly to him, tell him all thy wants. Use him constantly by faith at all
times. If some dark providence has beclouded thee, use thy God as a
"sun;" if some strong enemy has beset thee, find in Jehovah a "shield,"
for he is a sun and shield to his people. If thou hast lost thy way in
the mazes of life, use him as a "guide," for he will direct thee.
Whatever thou art, and wherever thou art, remember God is just what
thou wantest, and just where thou wantest, and that he can do all thou
wantest.

EVENING:

"The Lord is King for ever and ever."
-- Psalms 10:16

Jesus Christ is no despotic claimant of divine right, but he is really
and truly the Lord's anointed! "It hath pleased the Father that in him
should all fulness dwell." God hath given to him all power and all
authority. As the Son of man, he is now head over all things to his
church, and he reigns over heaven, and earth, and hell, with the keys
of life and death at his girdle. Certain princes have delighted to call
themselves kings by the popular will, and certainly our Lord Jesus
Christ is such in his church. If it could be put to the vote whether he
should be King in the church, every believing heart would crown him. O
that we could crown him more gloriously than we do! We would count no
expense to be wasted that could glorify Christ. Suffering would be
pleasure, and loss would be gain, if thereby we could surround his brow
with brighter crowns, and make him more glorious in the eyes of men and
angels. Yes, he shall reign. Long live the King! All hail to thee, King
Jesus! Go forth, ye virgin souls who love your Lord, bow at his feet,
strew his way with the lilies of your love, and the roses of your
gratitude: "Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all."
Moreover, our Lord Jesus is King in Zion by right of conquest: he has
taken and carried by storm the hearts of his people, and has slain
their enemies who held them in cruel bondage. In the Red Sea of his own
blood, our Redeemer has drowned the Pharaoh of our sins: shall he not
be King in Jeshurun? He has delivered us from the iron yoke and heavy
curse of the law: shall not the Liberator be crowned? We are his
portion, whom he has taken out of the hand of the Amorite with his
sword and with his bow: who shall snatch his conquest from his hand?
All hail, King Jesus! we gladly own thy gentle sway! Rule in our hearts
for ever, thou lovely Prince of Peace.

My Utmost For His Highest : "What Do You Want?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 27, 2009

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Seekest thou great things for thyself?

Jeremiah 14:5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=jer+14:5&sr=1

Are you seeking great things for yourself? Not seeking to be a great
one, but seeking great things from God for yourself. God wants you in
a closer relationship to Himself than receiving His gifts, He wants
you to get to know Him. A great thing is accidental, it comes and
goes. God never gives us anything accidental. There is nothing easier
than getting into a right relationship with God except when it is not
God Whom you want but only what He gives.

If you have only come the length of asking God for things, you have
never come to the first strand of abandonment, you have become a
Christian from a standpoint of your own. "I did ask God for the Holy
Spirit, but He did not give me the rest and the peace I expected."
Instantly God puts His finger on the reason - you are not seeking the
Lord at all, you are seeking something for yourself. Jesus says -
"Ask, and it shall be given you." Ask God for what you want, and you
cannot ask if you are not asking for a right thing. When you draw
near to God, you cease from asking for things. "Your Father knoweth
what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him." Then why ask? That
you may get to know Him.

Are you seeking great things for yourself? "O Lord, baptize me with
the Holy Ghost." If God does not, it is because you are not abandoned
enough to Him, there is something you will not do. Are you prepared
to ask yourself what it is you want from God and why you want it? God
always ignores the present perfection for the ultimate perfection. He
is not concerned about making you blessed and happy just now; He is
working out His ultimate perfection all the time - "that they may be
one even as We are."

THE QUALITIES OF LOVE

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+13:4-7

Dear Father, give me love!

May I one day possess fully all the qualities of love, as did your
son, Jesus, the Messiah!

May I be patient and kind, not jealous or boastful, not arrogant
or rude, not insisting on my own way, not ever irritable or
resentful.

May I rejoice always in what is right, never in anything that is
wrong.

Help me to bear all things and endure whatever I must, to trust in
all circumstances, and to be hopeful in all trials.

By Jesus's authority I come to you, asking. Amen.

WJD! -- Just 12 Men -- Matthew 10:1-4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, April 27, 2009

Just 12 Men

Jesus called his twelve followers together. Jesus gave them
power over evil spirits. Jesus gave them power to heal every
kind of disease and sickness. These are the names of the
twelve apostles : Simon (also called Peter) and his brother
Andrew; James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip
and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector;
James, son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and
Judas Iscariot. Judas is the one that gave Jesus to his
enemies.

-- Matthew 10:1-4 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
What an interesting, amazing, and strange group to choose if your goal
is to forever change the world! But there they are. A dozen men who,
because of Jesus' life and resurrection and the power of the Spirit,
forever changed the history of our planet. We have such a great
temptation to revere these men because of the good they did. While we
must be appreciative of those who were faithful and paid the ultimate
price for their discipleship, we must also realize that the glory of
their service is found in their Master, not in that they were the
Master's servants. What makes them special is that Jesus called them
and gave them authority to do great works to bless others. I wonder
what he wants to do with us? I wonder what role he wants us to play in
his great work of redemption?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O gracious God and Father, give me the heart to follow Jesus, the faith
to expect his great works to be done through me, and the humility to
give him all the glory for what happens that is good. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Psalm 121:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 27, 2009

VERSE:
The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and
forevermore.
-- Psalm 121:8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+121:8

THOUGHT:
Does it matter to anyone that I'm here? Does anyone notice when
I'm gone? Does anybody care if I make it home or never leave the
house? The answers: "Yes! Yes!! Yes!!!" The LORD, the Savior of
Israel and the Father of Jesus knows all about us and our comings
and goings. He will watch over us, now and forevermore.

PRAYER:
Father, thank you that when I rise up, you are not only there,
but even more than that you are watching over me. Almighty God,
thank you that when I return home at the end of my day, you are
there, escorting me home and welcoming me. I thank you most of all,
dear Father, that when I leave this life and go to the next, you
are there to escort me out of this life and welcome me home to life
with you, forever! In Jesus' name I praise you. Amen.
