Work Out Your Own Salvation

Work Out Your Own Salvation

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bible Verses ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Phil 2:12 So then, my beloved, even as you have always
obeyed, not as in my presence only but now much rather in my
absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
(13) For it is God who operates in you both the willing and
the working for His good pleasure.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words of Ministry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How is it possible for us to work out our own salvation? If
we could work out our salvation, would that not make
salvation a matter of our own works? Suppose I fall into a
pit and someone rescues me. That is salvation. But if I
succeed in delivering myself, that is not salvation, but my
own working. Since salvation is not of works, but of grace,
what does Paul mean by telling us to work out our salvation?

The key to understanding Paul's word is to know the meaning
of salvation in this verse. Salvation here is not salvation
from the lake of fire. Rather, it refers to what Paul has
already said about salvation earlier in this Epistle. The
words "so then" in verse 12 indicate that what Paul says in
this verse is a consequence of what has gone before. Working
out our salvation is the result of taking Christ as our
pattern, as seen in the preceding verses. As our pattern,
Christ is our salvation. However, this salvation needs to be
worked out by us.

In order for this to be accomplished in our experience, the
pattern must be subjective to us as well as objective. If it
were only objective, it could not be the salvation worked out
by us. The salvation here is not the salvation we receive; it
is the salvation we work out. The salvation we receive is the
salvation from God's condemnation and from the lake of fire.
There is no need for us to work out that kind of salvation.
The salvation here in Philippians is salvation of another
kind, or of a different degree. It is higher than that
mentioned in Acts 16:31, where the jailer is told that if he
believes in the Lord Jesus Christ, he and his household will
be saved. The salvation in 2:12 is actually a living Person.
This Person is the very Christ whom we live, experience, and
enjoy. A pattern which is only objective could not be our
salvation in this way. The fact that salvation is a living
Person and that this Person is our pattern indicates that the
pattern is subjective as well as objective.

Today's Verse : Psalm 138:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 24, 2009

VERSE:
The LORD will fulfill [his purpose] for me; your love, O LORD,
endures forever -- do not abandon the works of your hands.

-- Psalm 138:8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+138:8

THOUGHT:
First there is conviction: the LORD will finish his work in us!
(cf. Phil. 1:6). Second, there is declaration: the LORD's love
endures and doesn't fail (cf. 1 Cor. 13:8). Finally, there is
supplication: O Lord, don't forget me, your creation (cf. Ps.
139:13-16). What beautiful balance for our walk with the Lord.

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father and LORD of all things, I am confident that you
will accomplish your will and purpose in me. Seeing how you loved
and worked through the centuries with the everyday people I find in
Scripture, I know your love will last long after I am gone from
this place. However, dear LORD, I do face some struggles and
difficulties and I ask you to please intervene with your grace and
power in my life. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Shoes Off Please

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Shoes Off Please
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Then the Lord said to him, Take off your sandals; the place where you are standing is holy ground. Exodus 3:5

Moses had to get out of his sandals to enter into the holy presence of God. You and I must leave some things behind as well if we are to commune with a Holy God.

Moses was in the middle of the desert. No doubt he was tired and hot. His feet were sun scorched, and his sandals were not as fresh as when he first started out. The tassels were torn, and the sand had begun to mount up on the heels, rubbing a bald spot on the sole. This caused a unusual amount of disfiguration in the shoe prints that Moses made in the sand.

Now, I'm just kidding about all that! I don't think it mattered to God the condition of Moses' sandals.

No, I believe God's request of Moses went much deeper to the heart of Moses. I think God, who we know looks at the heart as opposed to the outward appearance, was asking Moses to check his excess spiritual baggage at the door. I think God was telling Moses to leave his past behind as he entered into the presence of a Holy God.

God, who is perfectly Holy, can allow no sin into His presence. Without leaving this part of his life behind, Moses could not enter into God's presence.

Guess what the best news of the day is? Moses was allowed into that very presence. I'm sorry to correct my statement so quickly, but actually, the best news of the day is that you and I are afforded that same opportunity. We can check our dirty, smelly shoes at the door.

Through a personal relationship with His Son Jesus, God will allow us into His Holy presence, not by our reputation; not by our pedigree; not by our social standing; or even by our designer clothing, but by His wonderful mercy and grace.

If you have called on the God of Israel, the God of the Bible, then the place where you are standing is Holy Ground.

Take off your sandals or leave y our past behind dear friend, you are standing on Holy Ground!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Putting My Life Where My Mouth Is, by Phil Ware

The air is sizzling with tension. Three and a half years work has come
down to this moment of intense conflict. Hatred and jealousy hang like
ripe fruit waiting to drop and spew out their venom and violence. Yet
far from backing down, Jesus has provoked this moment, and He will
incite the crowd further. They must decide. He will allow them no
middle ground. They will have to choose: Is He Savior or charlatan,
Messiah or maniac, Lord or liar.

Jesus has just angered everyone in religious and political power. He
has caused a riot in the Temple as people were getting ready for the
big national celebration of Passover. Jesus' turning over tables,
scattering money, and setting caged animals free was irresponsible
anywhere. To do it in the Temple was incendiary, bordering on
revolutionary. Such action was dangerous. What was Jesus thinking? What
would happen to their Temple-based economy? What would the Romans think
about this and do in response?

The religious and political leaders had repeatedly tried to discredit
Jesus and trap Him in legal questions and technicalities. Instead,
Jesus had embarrassed them with His answers and His mocking questions
in reply. He has the audacity to call them out, labeling them
hypocrites, moneygrubbers, show offs, abusive religious frauds, and
snakes.

Jesus' strong words to the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees during
His last trip to Jerusalem are strong enough to peel the bark of a
hardwood tree (Matthew 23:1-39). I have looked at Jesus' blast of
righteous anger aimed at the heart of the religious leaders from
several angles.

* I've had folks take these critical statements of Jesus and turn
them around and say what the opposite of them would look like.
Those make for pretty good leadership principles.

* I've separated the key statements and tied them to other passages
in Scripture to show how these problems that Jesus confronts are
often the haunts that demons inhabit in religious structures.

* I've talked about the Pharisees and their noble desire to honor God
with holy lives, yet reminded people how easily we sink into a
legalistic institutionalism that suffocates grace, abuses people,
and causes those in power to lose their soul.

Today, however, I want to focus on just one of the statements that
Jesus made:

[Jesus said] "They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on
other people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to
lift a finger to move them" (Matthew 23:4).

Jesus' words haunt me. They sound remarkably similar to the charges
often made today by critics of organized church:

* They don't practice what they preach!

* They weigh people down with burdens and unnecessary rules!

* They don't do anything to help people with their real life
problems!

To put it in cornbread English, most folks view Christians as overly
critical, unhelpful, hypocrites.

We can quarrel all we want about the misperceptions. We can grow
frustrated and cynical ourselves with those who have betrayed Jesus and
the church by their abuses of power. Bottom line, however, as followers
of Jesus, we have the power to do something about this.

To make this change, we don't have to surrender our commitment to the
moral call of God. Neither do we have to give up our commitment to
Scripture or truth or faithfulness. But to make this change, we MUST
help folks lift the burdens they face. We must be about doing good and
sharing God's love and grace in practical ways.

As churches and as followers of Jesus, we are entering a situation
unprecedented in most of our lifetimes. Mounting struggles,
disorientation, fragmentation, unemployment, retirement concerns, and
fear are seeping in around us like a river slowly swelling past it
banks. So what will we DO to help?

Jesus tells us what He doesn't want us to be. He says these words
knowing that they will incite His enemies and galvanize those
determined to kill Him. But He says them anyway to them and to us as a
warning:

"They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people's
shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to
move them" (Matthew 23:4).

Instead of being like those religious leaders, Jesus wants us to be
like Him.

Take a look at the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and see how
He was with people. Notice those with whom He associated -- it is kind
of hard to find someone He wouldn't spend time with if they wanted to
be around Him, isn't it! Notice how He lived among them, heard their
cries, saw their pain, and lifted their burdens. And now, He calls to
us and asks us to be His Body, His presence in the world. When we
gather around His table and take the bread, we are not only remembering
His body on the cross, but we are His bodily presence in the world
today (1 Corinthians 11:16-17). Will we continue to do for others what
He did when He was physically present?

It is world changing.

Jesus was the opposite of those who gave folks heavy burdens and
refused to help them carry those burdens. And now, in times like ours,
we have to decide. He allows us no middle ground. We have to choose: Is
He Savior or charlatan, Messiah or maniac, Lord or liar.

And if we decide that Jesus is our hero, we are going to live with
others and for others like He did! And as we do, the Lord has given us
this promise: "As you serve others in My name, you are serving me" (Matthew
25:40, loose paraphrase). Jesus becomes real to others through our
actions. Jesus becomes real to us through the people we serve.

Such a calling is not easy ... not in our hostile and confused world.
It is, however, world changing. And I can't think of a time in my life
when our world needed more changing and more grace.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

LIFE Questions and Blog Responses:

Do you think the three things listed above are really how most
non-believers see church goers? (That they are hypocrites who lay
burdens and guilt trips on people and don't do much to help the
brokenness in the world.)

Why do you think they believe this about believers?

Do you think this is a fair estimation of how religious people are
portrayed today?

What can you do to change people's impressions of Jesus' followers
today?

What is one specific thing your church or small group or group of
friends do to help serve the broken in your community?

What is one specific thing you could do to help serve those with whom
you work, go to school, or meet in daily life?

What are things that Christ followers you know are doing today to serve
the community around them? (This is to help share ideas with other
believers of things we can do to help today!)

Morning & Evening -- Hebrews 13:5 and Mark 10:21

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, February 23, 2009

MORNING:

"I will never leave thee."
-- Hebrews 13:5

No promise is of private interpretation. Whatever God has said to any
one saint, he has said to all. When he opens a well for one, it is that
all may drink. When he openeth a granary- door to give out food, there
may be some one starving man who is the occasion of its being opened,
but all hungry saints may come and feed too. Whether he gave the word
to Abraham or to Moses, matters not, O believer; he has given it to
thee as one of the covenanted seed. There is not a high blessing too
lofty for thee, nor a wide mercy too extensive for thee. Lift up now
thine eyes to the north and to the south, to the east and to the west,
for all this is thine. Climb to Pisgah's top, and view the utmost limit
of the divine promise, for the land is all thine own. There is not a
brook of living water of which thou mayst not drink. If the land
floweth with milk and honey, eat the honey and drink the milk, for both
are thine. Be thou bold to believe, for he hath said, "I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee."In this promise, God gives to his people
everything. "I will never leave thee." Then no attribute of God can
cease to be engaged for us. Is he mighty? He will show himself strong
on the behalf of them that trust him. Is he love? Then with
lovingkindness will he have mercy upon us. Whatever attributes may
compose the character of Deity, every one of them to its fullest extent
shall be engaged on our side. To put everything in one, there is
nothing you can want, there is nothing you can ask for, there is
nothing you can need in time or in eternity, there is nothing living,
nothing dying, there is nothing in this world, nothing in the next
world, there is nothing now, nothing at the resurrection-morning,
nothing in heaven which is not contained in this text-"I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee."

EVENING:

"Take up the cross, and follow me."
-- Mark 10:21

You have not the making of your own cross, although unbelief is a
master carpenter at cross-making; neither are you permitted to choose
your own cross, although self-will would fain be lord and master; but
your cross is prepared and appointed for you by divine love, and you
are cheerfully to accept it; you are to take up the cross as your
chosen badge and burden, and not to stand cavilling at it. This night
Jesus bids you submit your shoulder to his easy yoke. Do not kick at it
in petulance, or trample on it in vain-glory, or fall under it in
despair, or run away from it in fear, but take it up like a true
follower of Jesus. Jesus was a cross-bearer; he leads the way in the
path of sorrow. Surely you could not desire a better guide! And if he
carried a cross, what nobler burden would you desire? The Via Crucis is
the way of safety; fear not to tread its thorny paths.

Beloved, the cross is not made of feathers, or lined with velvet, it is
heavy and galling to disobedient shoulders; but it is not an iron
cross, though your fears have painted it with iron colours, it is a
wooden cross, and a man can carry it, for the Man of sorrows tried the
load. Take up your cross, and by the power of the Spirit of God you
will soon be so in love with it, that like Moses, you would not
exchange the reproach of Christ for all the treasures of Egypt.
Remember that Jesus carried it, and it will smell sweetly; remember
that it will soon be followed by the crown, and the thought of the
coming weight of glory will greatly lighten the present heaviness of
trouble. The Lord help you to bow your spirit in submission to the
divine will ere you fall asleep this night, that waking with
to-morrow's sun, you may go forth to the day's cross with the holy and
submissive spirit which becomes a follower of the Crucified.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Determination To Serve"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 23, 2009

THE DETERMINATION TO SERVE

The Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to
minister.

Matthew 20:28
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+20:28&sr=1

Paul's idea of service is the same as Our Lord's: "I am among you as
He that serveth;" "ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake." We have
the idea that a man called to the ministry is called to be a
different kind of being from other men. According to Jesus Christ, he
is called to be the "door-mat" of other men; their spiritual leader,
but never their superior. "I know how to be abased," says Paul. This
is Paul's idea of service - "I will spend myself to the last ebb for
you; you may give me praise or give me blame, it will make no
difference." So long as there is a human being who does not know
Jesus Christ, I am his debtor to serve him until he does. The
mainspring of Paul's service is not love for men, but love for Jesus
Christ. If we are devoted to the cause of humanity, we shall soon be
crushed and broken-hearted, for we shall often meet with more
ingratitude from men than we would from a dog; but if our motive is
love to God, no ingratitude can hinder us from serving our fellow
men.

Paul's realization of how Jesus Christ had dealt with him is the
secret of his determination to serve others. "I was before a
perjurer, a blasphemer, an injurious person" - no matter how men may
treat me, they will never treat me with the spite and hatred with
which I treated Jesus Christ. When we realize that Jesus Christ has
served us to the end of our meanness, our selfishness, and sin,
nothing that we meet with from others can exhaust our determination
to serve men for His sake.

Praying with Paul : "No Debt Except . . ."

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

NO DEBT EXCEPT . . .

Romans 13:8-10
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+13:8-10

Dear Father, senior partner in my business,

Help me get completely out of debt and stay out! Let me follow
your word, "Owe no man anything! . . . except to love one another."

Help me be a good steward of my business affairs. Spur me on to
work smart as well as hard. Let me be very wise, even shrewd, in
the way I order my business. While conserving resources, let me
move forward, even taking risks when such is best.

Help me, Father, to see you as the senior partner in what I do.
And may I always render a generous portion of my income to do your
work in the world.

In the name of Jesus and with the Spirit's help, I ask these
things. Amen.

WJD! -- Reconcile! -- Matthew 5:25-26

Reconcile!

"If your enemy is taking you to court, then become friends
with him quickly. You should do that before you go to court.
If you don't become his friend, then he might give you to the
judge. And the judge might give you to a guard to put you in
jail. And I tell you that you will not leave that jail until
you have paid everything you owe."

-- Matthew 5:25-26 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
As Jesus helps us to better understand God's intent, character, and
will revealed in the Law, he also shines the light of truth into all
the corners we so often try to keep hidden from him. Jesus moves from
our human sense of worship into matters of everyday life with his
radical call for reconciliation with our enemies. He wants us to
reconcile quickly before we get into legal proceedings with them,
otherwise matters can escalate out of control and damage us as well as
our influence. Jesus emphasizes the urgency of making things right.
Second, as God's human children, we have always found it easy to
falsely segment our lives into sacred and secular compartments, to make
worship a weekly event rather than an everyday lifestyle. To keep us
from thinking that reconciliation is only a "church rule" and not a
"life rule," Jesus reminds us that reconciliation involves all of life,
not just the "religious part." Jesus is serious about forgiveness,
mercy, and reconciliation as the way of God and the lifestyle of his
children.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty God, please forgive me for segmenting my life into little
pieces and not allowing your character and will to transform me through
and through. I want you to rule over every part of my life, especially
my relationships. I want to walk in harmony with my brothers and
sisters and in cordial concern with those who are not part of your
kingdom. Empower me to forgive and release my grievance before
embarrassing my Kingdom Family or causing division in your people. In
the name of the Lord Jesus I pray. Amen.
