Today's Verse : Luke 12:23

December 23, 2008

VERSE:
Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
-- Luke 12:23
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Luke+12:23

THOUGHT:
In the rush of the holiday season and the grab at getting and
giving gifts, it is very important to remember that life is much
more than even the most basic things we think we need. If we lose
sight of God, his work and his will in our lives, then what do we
have? Not much and it won't last long! My prayer for you, and for
me, during this holiday season is that we are reminded of what is
most important, most valuable, and most enduring.

PRAYER:
Sweet and precious God, almighty and awesome in glory, yet so
near and so concerned about my heart, thank you for knowing and
loving me with an everlasting love. Please give me the wisdom to
see beyond the transitory things of life and find you and your
sustaining presence. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Immanuel One

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Immanuel One
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. In addition, he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant--the Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:27-28 NIV

Moses was a prepared person. If you will remember Moses' birth, Moses should not have been in the world. The Pharaoh was killing Israelite babies under the age of two. Moses' mother, out of love for her son, and, I think, the leading of God's Spirit, hid Moses in a basket and floated him in the river. Pharaohs daughter found the baby Moses, took him as her own to raise, and hired Moses' mother to be his nanny. Some may say that Moses was "lucky". I call that divine intervention.

Moses was raised under the ways of the Pharaoh, but the Israelite in him never left. Once when he saw an Israelite being abused by and Egyptian so ldier, Moses killed the soldier. He fled Egypt and hid out in the desert for forty years. God did not forsake him, however, and later appeared to Moses through the burning bush. After leading his people out of Egypt, Moses shepherds the Israelites for forty years in the wilderness.

So why the history lesson? Because Moses was prepared to receive the Ten Commandments from God. Too many times we, as Christians, want God to "give us all His blessings" at once. In a world of instant everything, from popcorn to full microwave meals, we expect immediate performance. God works over time to create in us something He can use. He molds us through the experiences of life towards His ultimate goal to make us like Christ.

Before God came near to Moses, using him in such a powerful way, God tested him, He shaped him, and He prepared Moses in a wonderful way. As we will see over the next few days, such is the way God has prepared the world...so that God could come near!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Smell of Sheep, by Phil Ware

In December of 2006, just off highway 36, in Brazoria, Texas, someone
stole baby Jesus and His manger. Well, it wasn't exactly the real
Jesus; it was the figurine of Jesus from the town's nativity scene. It
was stolen and everyone in town was depressed about it. So when they
set up the nativity display in 2007, there was no baby Jesus or manger.

The folks in Brazoria aren't alone. The problem is called the "Stolen
Baby Jesus Syndrome"! It happens every year. Baby Jesus is stolen out
of nativity sets all around the country. In fact, stories about the
disappearance of baby Jesus are found in newspapers and local TV news
all around the world. Inevitably, the person reporting this story will
say something like, "Who would do such a thing?"

This Christmas, we have much bigger problems than a plastic baby Jesus
figurine being stolen out of a fake manger in a public nativity
display. And if we are honest with ourselves, the real Jesus is also
frequently hijacked out of our Christmas experience for many reasons.
Sometimes it's our own stress, travel, and preparations for the
holidays that rob us of Jesus. Sometimes it's the pressure of political
correctness that removes Jesus out of the season and replaces Him with
snowmen, reindeer, and holly. Sometimes, it's the hype, posturing, and
rudeness of so-called Christian folks who steal Jesus away from the
holiday season. That's why God included shepherds in the story (Luke
2:8-20).

Shepherds once enjoyed "most favored status" in the stories of
Scripture. Great heroes of the faith -- Abraham, Moses, and David --
were shepherds. One of the most loved psalms speaks of God as a
shepherd (Psalm 23). By the time Jesus was born, however, shepherds had
suffered several centuries of bad PR. They were poor. They lived
outdoors. They were not refined. They were not educated. Worst of all,
they smelled like sheep. The technical term used in Jesus' day to
describe shepherds and other less than acceptable people was "'am
haaretz" -- meaning "common folks," or "people of the land." Let me
assure you, being classified "'am haaretz" was no compliment in Jesus
day.

The "people of the land" were not considered good candidates to be
religious. They were considered unclean, uncouth, and unkempt. They
didn't have time to study all the religious traditions, so they
couldn't live up to the legalistic standards of religious
righteousness. They were too busy doing dirty work to be considered
pure enough to be religiously desirable. They were too poor to go on
the religious pilgrimages to the sacred places of worship, so the
religious would never consider them faithful to God. The last place to
expect God to reveal His glory was among a bunch of these wool chasing,
tick picking, social castoffs.

Yet when God chose for angels to announce Jesus' birth, God sent His
angels to shepherds who were out in the fields tending their sheep!
Think of it: dirty, stinky, shepherds camping out and watching their
sheep heard the joyous praise of angels and came running to see the
newborn baby Jesus. Not many hospitals would have allowed them into the
waiting room, much less the delivery room. But God made sure that the
shepherds felt at home when they found baby Jesus. He was lying in a
feed trough in the place where animals were kept -- a place any ol'
shepherd would feel at home.

So right in the middle of the birth of the Son of God, with all the
good sweet folks praying for God's deliverance and with the Romans busy
ruling the empire and with the religious folks trying to protect their
traditions, God placed His Son in a manger surrounded by a bunch of
wool chasing, tick picking, social cast offs known as shepherds. The
smell of sheep and the smoke of their campfires still clung heavily to
their clothes when they arrived to greet the newborn King.

The story of the shepherds is God's reminder that no one can steal His
grace from us. No matter where we've been or how we smell or what
people call us, there's room at the manger with baby Jesus, for all of
us.

That's why I think I love the story about the stolen baby Jesus in
Brazoria. After a big wind blew down much of the nativity scene Sunday
morning December 16, 2007, some folks showed up after church to put the
nativity display back together. Guess what they found? Yep, baby Jesus
was back where he belonged. Jesus had been returned to the manger.
Joseph and Mary were once again surrounded by animals and shepherds as
they bowed before their King.

For me, this is God's little reminder that all are welcome to His gift
of grace. We are welcome at this manger. Even if we stink with the odor
of our bad choices and bad reputations, we are still welcome. And if we
are willing, the Wind of heaven can blow through the destruction of our
lives and bring Jesus back to us again.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord
shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to
them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that
will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has
been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign
to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a
manger" (Luke 2:9-12 TNIV).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

What does the presence of the shepherds in the story of Jesus' birth
say to you?

What group of folks in the story of Jesus' birth most closely
characterizes you?

That's why I love the story.

Why do you think Luke mentions shepherds and Matthew mentions the Magi
in their accounts of Jesus' early years?

Does it make any difference to your answer to know that Shepherds were
considered "stinky hicks" that no one wanted around and Magi were
foreigners who practiced a false religion?

Do you think Luke's reminder of Jesus' words in Acts 1:8 and
Matthew's reminder of Jesus' Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20
has anything to do with us meeting shepherds and wise men in the
story of Jesus' birth?

How can we steal the real Jesus from the story of His life and
substitute our own version of Jesus?

What could you point to in Jesus' birth, and also His life, that would
help you answer a person who said, "I'm not sure I'd fit with Jesus,
I'm not very religious?"

What do you think Jesus would say to these folks?

What Scriptures could you point to that would help you speak about
God's true love for them?

I'd love to hear your response to these ideas on my blog:

Morning & Evening -- Isaiah 41:10 and Deuteronomy 32:5

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, December 22, 2008

MORNING:

"I will strengthen thee."
-- Isaiah 41:10

God has a strong reserve with which to discharge this engagement; for
he is able to do all things. Believer, till thou canst drain dry the
ocean of omnipotence, till thou canst break into pieces the towering
mountains of almighty strength, thou never needest to fear. Think not
that the strength of man shall ever be able to overcome the power of
God. Whilst the earth's huge pillars stand, thou hast enough reason to
abide firm in thy faith. The same God who directs the earth in its
orbit, who feeds the burning furnace of the sun, and trims the lamps of
heaven, has promised to supply thee with daily strength. While he is
able to uphold the universe, dream not that he will prove unable to
fulfil his own promises. Remember what he did in the days of old, in
the former generations. Remember how he spake and it was done; how he
commanded, and it stood fast. Shall he that created the world grow
weary? He hangeth the world upon nothing; shall he who doth this be
unable to support his children? Shall he be unfaithful to his word for
want of power? Who is it that restrains the tempest? Doth not he ride
upon the wings of the wind, and make the clouds his chariots, and hold
the ocean in the hollow of his hand? How can he fail thee? When he has
put such a faithful promise as this on record, wilt thou for a moment
indulge the thought that he has outpromised himself, and gone beyond
his power to fulfil? Ah, no! Thou canst doubt no longer.

O thou who art my God and my strength, I can believe that this promise
shall be fulfilled, for the boundless reservoir of thy grace can never
be exhausted, and the overflowing storehouse of thy strength can never
be emptied by thy friends or rifled by thine enemies.

"Now let the feeble all be strong,
And make Jehovah's arm their song."

EVENING:

"The spot of his children."
-- Deuteronomy 32:5

What is the secret spot which infallibly betokens the child of God? It
were vain presumption to decide this upon our own judgment; but God's
word reveals it to us, and we may tread surely where we have revelation
to be our guide. Now, we are told concerning our Lord, "to as many as
received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to
as many as believed on his name." Then, if I have received Christ Jesus
into my heart, I am a child of God. That reception is described in the
same verse as believing on the name of Jesus Christ. If, then, I
believe on Jesus Christ's name-that is, simply from my heart trust
myself with the crucified, but now exalted, Redeemer, I am a member of
the family of the Most High. Whatever else I may not have, if I have
this, I have the privilege to become a child of God. Our Lord Jesus
puts it in another shape. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and
they follow me." Here is the matter in a nutshell. Christ appears as a
shepherd to his own sheep, not to others. As soon as he appears, his
own sheep perceive him-they trust him, they are prepared to follow him;
he knows them, and they know him-there is a mutual knowledge-there is a
constant connection between them. Thus the one mark, the sure mark, the
infallible mark of regeneration and adoption is a hearty faith in the
appointed Redeemer. Reader, are you in doubt, are you uncertain whether
you bear the secret mark of God's children? Then let not an hour pass
over your head till you have said, "Search me, O God, and know my
heart." Trifle not here, I adjure you! If you must trifle anywhere, let
it be about some secondary matter: your health, if you will, or the
title deeds of your estate; but about your soul, your never-dying soul
and its eternal destinies, I beseech you to be in earnest. Make sure
work for eternity.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Drawing Of The Father"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 22, 2008

THE DRAWING OF THE FATHER

No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent
Me draw him.

John 6:44
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+6:44&sr=1

When God draws me, the issue of my will comes in at once - will I
react on the revelation which God gives - will I come to Him?
Discussion on spiritual matters is an impertinence. Never discuss
with anyone when God speaks. Belief is not an intellectual act;
belief is a moral act whereby I deliberately commit myself. Will I
dump myself down absolutely on God and transact on what He says? If I
will, I shall find I am based on Reality that is as sure as God's
throne.

In preaching the gospel, always push an issue of will. Belief must be
the will to believe. There must be a surrender of the will, not a
surrender to persuasive power, a deliberate launching forth on God
and on what He says until I am no longer confident in what I have
done, I am confident only in God. The hindrance is that I will not
trust God, but only my mental understanding. As far as feelings go, I
must stake all blindly. I must will to believe, and this can never be
done without a violent effort on my part to disassociate myself from
my old ways of looking at things, and by putting myself right over on
to Him.

Every man is made to reach out beyond his grasp. It is God who draws
me, and my relationship to Him in the first place is a personal one,
not an intellectual one. I am introduced into the relationship by the
miracle of God and my own will to believe, then I begin to get an
intelligent appreciation and understanding of the wonder of the
transaction.

Praying with Paul : "No Distinctions"

NO DISTINCTIONS

Colossians 3:5-10
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+3:5-10

Dear Father,

Let me live in the light of your truth about myself - that my old
nature has been put off, with its baggage of practices, and that I
have put on a new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after
the image of its creator.

Help us to make no distinctions regarding origins, heredity, or
traditions, but to see Christ in all believers.

Help us to let Christ be in us, to transform and renew every fiber
of our being and of our relationships.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Where His Body Was Placed -- Mark 15:47

Where His Body Was Placed

Mary from Magdala and Mary the mother of Joses saw the place
where Jesus was put.

-- Mark 15:47 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus' death was assured -- it was confirmed by those in authority.
Jesus' burial was done by friends -- Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus
took him down off the cross, wrapped his body, and buried him -- and
his tomb was secured. The women who had faithfully accompanied Jesus
through his whole ordeal now saw his lifeless body placed in the tomb.
His followers felt that all hope was gone. The full reality of Jesus'
death had settled into the hearts of his followers. There are no doubts
about any of the harsh realities of his life's end.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, the witness of these women helps make Jesus' death and burial
emotionally real to me. I can only imagine their heartbreak and their
deep sense of loss. However, dear Lord, this heartbreak also makes
their testimony to Jesus' resurrection even more powerful. Thank you
for their faithful witness which makes the anguish they bore a reason
for hope and not a hopeless end. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
