=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Your Half Full Glass, by Rubel Shelly

It dawned on me last Wednesday that I finally understand a string of
words that were spoken before I was born but which I have heard all my
life. They are the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt from his first
inaugural address. He gave the speech on March 4, 1933. It is the one
with the famous line that goes "the only thing we have to fear is fear
itself."

In the context of FDR's famous speech, here is what he said:

This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth,
frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing
conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as
it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let
me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is
fear itself -- nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which
paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every
dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor
has met with that understanding and support of the people
themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you
will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.

Without the experience of the past few months, I'm not sure I could
have grasped what Roosevelt was articulating to an earlier generation.
I've cut way back on listening to or reading "the news" -- in the
conviction that most of what I have been hearing or reading is negative
worldview rather than straightforward fact, negative interpretation
rather than simply news.

It is time to push back the darkness of despair with the light of hope.

You and I have been living a "culture of fear" -- in politics,
business, finance, education, water-cooler conversation, you name it.
We have forgotten the obvious and emphasized the negative. So fear has
been allowed to keep us awake, cloud our decisions, and poison our
relationships.

A fellow once told me his favorite verse in the Bible was this: "And it
came to pass ..." That's the obvious fact we seem to have forgotten.
Bad times don't last. Nothing down here lasts for long. And that's true
of the economic chaos of the past year and a half.

It is time for our own "nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which
paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance" to give way
to realism tempered with optimism. It is time for you to be bold in
planning for the future. It is time to push back the darkness of
despair with the light of hope.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree
of life (Proverbs 13:12 NLT).

That half-empty glass of yours is half-full.

Morning & Evening -- John 17:15 and Hebrews 11:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, May 2, 2009

MORNING:

"I pray not that thou shouldst take them out of the world."
-- John 17:15

It is a sweet and blessed event which will occur to all believers in
God's own time-the going home to be with Jesus. In a few more years the
Lord's soldiers, who are now fighting "the good fight of faith" will
have done with conflict, and have entered into the joy of their Lord.
But although Christ prays that his people may eventually be with him
where he is, he does not ask that they may be taken at once away from
this world to heaven. He wishes them to stay here. Yet how frequently
does the wearied pilgrim put up the prayer, "O that I had wings like a
dove! for then would I fly away and be at rest;" but Christ does not
pray like that, he leaves us in his Father's hands, until, like shocks
of corn fully ripe, we shall each be gathered into our Master's garner.
Jesus does not plead for our instant removal by death, for to abide in
the flesh is needful for others if not profitable for ourselves. He
asks that we may be kept from evil, but he never asks for us to be
admitted to the inheritance in glory till we are of full age.
Christians often want to die when they have any trouble. Ask them why,
and they tell you, "Because we would be with the Lord." We fear it is
not so much because they are longing to be with the Lord, as because
they desire to get rid of their troubles; else they would feel the same
wish to die at other times when not under the pressure of trial. They
want to go home, not so much for the Saviour's company, as to be at
rest. Now it is quite right to desire to depart if we can do it in the
same spirit that Paul did, because to be with Christ is far better, but
the wish to escape from trouble is a selfish one. Rather let your care
and wish be to glorify God by your life here as long as he pleases,
even though it be in the midst of toil, and conflict, and suffering,
and leave him to say when "it is enough."

EVENING:

"These all died in faith."
-- Hebrews 11:13

Behold the epitaph of all those blessed saints who fell asleep before
the coming of our Lord! It matters nothing how else they died, whether
of old age, or by violent means; this one point, in which they all
agree, is the most worthy of record, "they all died in faith." In faith
they lived-it was their comfort, their guide, their motive and their
support; and in the same spiritual grace they died, ending their
life-song in the sweet strain in which they had so long continued. They
did not die resting in the flesh or upon their own attainments; they
made no advance from their first way of acceptance with God, but held
to the way of faith to the end. Faith is as precious to die by as to
live by.

Dying in faith has distinct reference to the past. They believed the
promises which had gone before, and were assured that their sins were
blotted out through the mercy of God. Dying in faith has to do with the
present. These saints were confident of their acceptance with God, they
enjoyed the beams of his love, and rested in his faithfulness. Dying in
faith looks into the future. They fell asleep, affirming that the
Messiah would surely come, and that when he would in the last days
appear upon the earth, they would rise from their graves to behold him.
To them the pains of death were but the birth-pangs of a better state.
Take courage, my soul, as thou readest this epitaph. Thy course,
through grace, is one of faith, and sight seldom cheers thee; this has
also been the pathway of the brightest and the best. Faith was the
orbit in which these stars of the first magnitude moved all the time of
their shining here; and happy art thou that it is thine. Look anew
to-night to Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith, and thank him
for giving thee like precious faith with souls now in glory.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Passion Of Patience"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 2, 2009

THE PASSION OF PATIENCE

Though it tarry, wait for it.

Habakkuk 2:3
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=hab+2:3&sr=1

Patience is not indifference; patience conveys the idea of an
immensely strong rock withstanding all onslaughts. The vision of God
is the source of patience, because it imparts a moral inspiration.
Moses endured, not because he had an ideal of right and duty, but
because be had a vision of God. He "endured, as seeing Him Who is
invisible." A man with the vision of God is not devoted to a cause or
to any particular issue; he is devoted to God Himself. You always
know when the vision is of God because of the inspiration that comes
with it; things come with largeness and tonic to the life because
everything is energized by God. If God gives you a time spiritually,
as He gave His Son actually, of temptation in the wilderness, with no
word from Himself at all, endure, and the power to endure is there
because you see God.

"Though it tarry, wait for it." The proof that we have the vision is
that we are reaching out for more than we have grasped. It is a bad
thing to be satisfied spiritually. "What shall I render unto the
Lord?" said the Psalmist. "I will take the cup of salvation." We are
apt to look for satisfaction in ourselves - "Now I have got the
thing; now I am entirely sanctified; now I can endure." Instantly we
are on the road to ruin. Our reach must exceed our grasp. "Not as
though I had already attained, either were already perfect." If we
have only what we have experienced, we have nothing; if we have the
inspiration of the vision of God, we have more than we can
experience. Beware of the danger of relaxation spiritually.

Praying with Paul : "The Good News"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

THE GOOD NEWS

1 Corinthians 15:1-4
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+15:1-4

Dear Father, God of the living,

Thank you for the Good News that Jesus Christ, your Son, is risen
from the dead. Thank you that by it I am saved and in it I stand,
if I hold it fast - unless I believed in vain - which I did not.

Thank you for the important message we received - that Christ died
for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, - thank you, Lord!
- that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in
accordance to the Scriptures, - thank you, Lord! - and that he
appeared to many, many eyewitnesses - thank you, Lord! Praise your
name!

In the name of Jesus I thank you for your resurrection power and
ask that I may live so as to always have hope of sharing in it.
Amen.

Choices

"And if a home or town refuses to welcome you or listen to
you, then leave that place. Shake their dust off your feet. I
tell you the truth. On the judgment day it will be worse for
that town than for the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah."

-- Matthew 10:14-15 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Matthew will constantly remind us that our decisions about Jesus and
the lifestyle he calls us to embrace have eternal consequences. To
reject Jesus' disciples and their message of the Gospel is to bring
judgement. While this is not a popular message today, it is still the
truth. Jesus came to save us from judgement, but if we reject him, we
have given up the basis of our hope.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Righteous and Almighty God, please forgive me when I have not told the
lost about your love. Please help me past my discouragement when people
won't heed your message of grace. Please forgive me most of all for
forgetting that the Gospel is so necessary for salvation that to reject
it is to reject hope. Please give me wisdom and passion to share that
Gospel story boldly and with gentleness and respect. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.

-- Proverbs 10:12
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Proverbs+10:12

THOUGHT:
Our worst tendencies want to repay evil with evil, spite for
spite, pettiness with pettiness, and hatred with hatred. God has
always wanted his people to be the redemptive influence in their
world, society, and relationships. Paul reminded the Christians in
Rome to "not repay evil with evil" (Rom. 12:17). Here, God's wise
man teaches us a similar truth. Love removes the teeth out of
difficult situations, while hatred only turns up the flames of
bitterness and hate. We're called to be a different kind of people
that leave the world a better place. It isn't always easy, but it
is always powerful.

PRAYER:
Father, I confess that when I'm wronged it makes me angry and
I'm tempted to strike back in kind. Please, remove the baser side
of my character through the cleansing and redeeming influence of
your Holy Spirit and the love your Spirit inspires. In Jesus' name
I pray. Amen.
