Today's Verse : John 8:12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 6, 2007

VERSE:
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light
of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but
will have the light of life."
-- John 8:12

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=John+8:12

THOUGHT:
Are you walking in light or darkness? Can you clearly see your
path, or do you find yourself stumbling along an uncertain path?
Jesus wants us to boldly follow him. The way may not always be
easy, but the destination is assured, and your way can be certain.
Most of all, you won't ever have to have a night light -- you're
assured that even in the deepest darkness, you will have his light,
the only light that gives life.

PRAYER:
Wonderful and tender Shepherd, please give me a faithful heart.
Even in my deepest moments of darkness and despair, I want to be
able to find your Light and to share his life with others. In the
name of the One who is never darkness, Jesus the Light of the
world, I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Motivation 3

And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18:3 NIV

Did you know you may need to change? I'm not trying to upset you, but Jesus said the disciples needed to change. They had spent years with Him by the time He told them this. They were in the presence of the King of kings 24/7 and yet they needed to change if they wanted to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. They had to change to become like a little child. I don't think I have many children who read this devotional, so unless you are a child, you may need to change and become like one.

I wonder what Jesus meant? In other places of the Bible maturity is encouraged. Certainly we need to grow up and face life someday. We can't remain "childlike" in handling the things of this world. Yet Jesus tells us to become childlike.

I wonder if Jesus is trying to tell us about our attitude. Perhaps this verse means more than just speaking of eternity. After all, Jesus often talked about the Kingdom of God in the present tense. We don't have to wait for the Kingdom of heaven when we die; the Kingdom of heaven is here! Perhaps to fully grasp and understand the Kingdom of God; to really get in on all the Kingdom of heaven has for us, we must become like a little child.

Children are filled with wonder, excitement, astonishment, and awe of life. Recently I was at a big national toy store. One of the families from our church was coming out as I was walking in the store. I heard the 4 year old son loudly ask his mother, "Can we come back here every day?" Who hasn't watched a little child get more enjoyment out of a box than the toy inside the box?

I wonder if Jesus wasn't thinking those kinds of thoughts when He said, "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."

Lord, help me have the wonder of a child when it comes to things of YOU!

Quotemeal: "Why is purity such a ..."

Why is purity such a struggle? Why is it so difficult to order
our lives in a way that allows Christ to shine through us? ...
We destroy purity by equating it with legalism and forgetting
that it is first and foremost a work of the heart. Reducing it
to a set of rules trivializes the purpose of purity and creates
a veneer of purity without the genuine, underlying character.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Is That All There Is?, by Tim Archer

I remember the football game I wanted so badly. At a time when
computers were unknown in homes, it was "computerized." My favorite
football player appeared on the box, assuring me that it was so
realistic that pros could train with it. I knew the game would be
wonderful.

I dreamed about that football game, of the fun I would have playing it.
I imagined myself passing wonderful hours with this realistic
simulation. Finally, after months of longing and pleading, I got the
game I wanted. Excitedly I took it out of the box and discovered that
I'd been misled. There was nothing computerized about this game, except
in the loosest sense of the word. There were two moving sticks with a
light attached to them; the light would illuminate different numbers
according to how the sticks were moved. That was the extent of the
"computerization" of this "realistic" game. I was left looking at the
game thinking, "Is that all there is to it?"

I'd like to say that was the only time in my life that I experienced
that feeling, but it wouldn't be true. In fact, I've lived through the
same thing time and again. I see something and come to want it,
dreaming about it, anticipating the satisfaction I'll feel when I
finally get it. Then I obtain the object of my desire and find myself
thinking, "Is that all there is to it?"

If we're not careful, we go through our whole lives thinking "Is that
all there is? Isn't there anything more?" We hear the promises, the
sales pitches, the call of endless temptations: buy this and you'll be
happy; start a relationship with this person and all your dreams will
come true; get that dream job and live happily ever after. Then we get
home and discover that we've just bought two sticks connected to a
light. "Is that all there is?"

Over and over, the question arises: "Is that all there is?"

In the book of Genesis, a man named Jacob describes his life as
follows: "The days of the years of my sojourning are 130 years. Few and
evil have been the days of the years of my life" (Genesis 47:9). 130
years, and Jacob calls them "few and evil." I can almost hear him say,
"Is that all there is to it?"

Only God can meet our deepest needs, only He can satisfy that longing
we have. When we receive His gifts, we'll never say, "Is that all there
is?" When He gives us the gift of salvation, when He pours out His
grace in our lives, we'll never be left looking for more. God keeps His
promises. His gifts have no equal. No one can satisfy our longings like
the living God.

I'd like to share with you more about what God has to offer to us. Just
write me at tim@hopeforlife.org. Or visit our blog at
www.hopeforlife.org/blog. I promise that when you understand what God
has to give, you won't be looking for more.

Morning & Evening -- Matthew 7:7 and Zechariah 1:20

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

MORNING:

"Ask, and it shall be given you."
-- Matthew 7:7

We know of a place in England still existing, where a dole of bread is
served to every passerby who chooses to ask for it. Whoever the
traveller may be, he has but to knock at the door of St. Cross
Hospital, and there is the dole of bread for him. Jesus Christ so
loveth sinners that he has built a St. Cross Hospital, so that whenever
a sinner is hungry, he has but to knock and have his wants supplied.
Nay, he has done better; he has attached to this Hospital of the Cross
a bath; and whenever a soul is black and filthy, it has but to go there
and be washed. The fountain is always full, always efficacious. No
sinner ever went into it and found that it could not wash away his
stains. Sins which were scarlet and crimson have all disappeared, and
the sinner has been whiter than snow. As if this were not enough, there
is attached to this Hospital of the Cross a wardrobe, and a sinner
making application simply as a sinner, may be clothed from head to
foot; and if he wishes to be a soldier, he may not merely have a
garment for ordinary wear, but armour which shall cover him from the
sole of his foot to the crown of his head. If he asks for a sword, he
shall have that given to him, and a shield too. Nothing that is good
for him shall be denied him. He shall have spending-money so long as he
lives, and he shall have an eternal heritage of glorious treasure when
he enters into the joy of his Lord.

If all these things are to be had by merely knocking at mercy's door, O
my soul, knock hard this morning, and ask large things of thy generous
Lord. Leave not the throne of grace till all thy wants have been spread
before the Lord, and until by faith thou hast a comfortable prospect
that they shall be all supplied. No bashfulness need retard when Jesus
invites. No unbelief should hinder when Jesus promises. No
cold-heartedness should restrain when such blessings are to be
obtained.

EVENING:

"And the Lord shewed me four carpenters."
-- Zechariah 1:20

In the vision described in this chapter, the prophet saw four terrible
horns. They were pushing this way and that way, dashing down the
strongest and the mightiest; and the prophet asked, "What are these?"
The answer was, "These are the horns which have scattered Israel." He
saw before him a representation of those powers which had oppressed the
church of God. There were four horns; for the church is attacked from
all quarters. Well might the prophet have felt dismayed; but on a
sudden there appeared before him four carpenters. He asked, "What shall
these do?" These are the men whom God hath found to break those horns
in pieces. God will always find men for his work, and he will find them
at the right time. The prophet did not see the carpenters first, when
there was nothing to do, but first the "horns," and then the
"carpenters." Moreover, the Lord finds enough men. He did not find
three carpenters, but four; there were four horns, and there must be
four workmen. God finds the right men; not four men with pens to write;
not four architects to draw plans; but four carpenters to do rough
work. Rest assured, you who tremble for the ark of God, that when the
"horns" grow troublesome, the "carpenters" will be found. You need not
fret concerning the weakness of the church of God at any moment; there
may be growing up in obscurity the valiant reformer who will shake the
nations: Chrysostoms may come forth from our Ragged Schools, and
Augustines from the thickest darkness of London's poverty. The Lord
knows where to find his servants. He hath in ambush a multitude of
mighty men, and at his word they shall start up to the battle; "for the
battle is the Lord's," and he shall get to himself the victory. Let us
abide faithful to Christ, and he, in the right time, will raise up for
us a defence, whether it be in the day of our personal need, or in the
season of peril to his Church.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Temple Of The Holy Ghost"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 5, 2007

THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY GHOST

Only in the throne will I be greater than thou.

Genesis 41:40

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ge+41:40&sr=1

I have to account to God for the way in which I rule my body under
His domination. Paul said he did not "frustrate the grace of God" -
make it of no effect. The grace of God is absolute, the salvation of
Jesus is perfect, it is done for ever. I am not being saved, I am
saved; salvation is as eternal as God's throne; the thing for me to
do is to work out what God works in. "Work out your own salvation," I
am responsible for doing it. It means that I have to manifest in this
body the life of the Lord Jesus, not mystically, but really and
emphatically. "I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection."
Every saint can have his body under absolute control for God. God has
made us to have government over all the temple of the Holy Spirit,
over imaginations and affections. We are responsible for these, and
we must never give way to inordinate affections. Most of us are much
sterner with others than we are in regard to ourselves; we make
excuses for things in ourselves whilst we condemn in others things to
which we are not naturally inclined.

"I beseech you," says Paul, "present your bodies a living sacrifice."
The point to decide is this - "Do I agree with my Lord and Master
that my body shall be His temple?' If so, then for me the whole of
the law for the body is summed up in this revelation, that my body is
the temple of the Holy Ghost.

WJD! -- The Greatness of Our Lord -- Luke 22:24-27

The Greatness of Our Lord

Later the apostles began to argue about which one of them was
the most important. But Jesus said to them, "The kings of the
world rule over their people. Men who have authority over
other people make the people call them 'great helpers of the
people.' But you must not be like that. The greatest person
should become like the youngest person! Leaders should be
like servants. Who is more important: the person sitting at
the table or the person serving him? You think the person
sitting at the table is more important. But I am like a
servant among you!"

-- Luke 22:24-27 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
You can usually tell who the important people are by those who wait on
them and by those to whom they can give orders. Not in Jesus' Kingdom!
Jesus reminds his disciples (including us today) that as the Master and
Lord, he could order folks around, but instead he serves them. That is
the definition of greatness in Jesus' Kingdom. So let's honestly ask
ourselves how well we stack up on the greatness scale of the Master!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Righteous and merciful Father, I confess to you that I sometimes use
the wrong criteria when evaluating the importance of a person. This
causes me to desire status, rank, and recognition rather then leading
me to serve others without drawing attention to myself. Please forgive
me. Mold my heart by your Holy Spirit to serve others just as your Son
has served and blessed me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
