Today's Verse : 1 John 4:16

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 9, 2009

VERSE:
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.
Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

-- 1 John 4:16
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+4:16

THOUGHT:
We can be sure that God loves us. He wants us to live in and be
blessed by his love. That love is more than just the grace that
reaches us when we are saved. God's love extends through us. His
love is redemptive in our loving behavior to others. His presence
is seen in our loving attitudes and deeds. God wants his love to be
shared by us to others. In this way, his love blesses us when we
receive it and also when we share it!

PRAYER:
Father in heaven, I rely on your love. I cannot imagine my life
without it; I would be completely lost -- literally and eternally.
However, I know you love me Father. I am confident about my future,
full of joy in this moment, and standing on tiptoe until your love
is fully realized in your presence at Jesus' coming. Thank you for
loving me. In Jesus' name I thank you. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Better than the Super Bowl, by Rubel Shelly

Last Sunday's football game between the Arizona Cardinals and the
Pittsburgh Steelers was billed as the Super Bowl. It deserves the
title. It is the game toward which everything in the NFL seasons
points. The team that wins gets bragging rights as best of the best for
the year. So hats off to Pittsburgh for its 27-23 win.

But you'll have to pardon me for thinking a much bigger game was played
last November 7 in Grapevine, Texas. It was high school kids. Faith
Christian School, sporting a strong 7-2 record, went up against
Gainesville State School. Gainesville was 0-8 coming in and had scored
a total of two touchdowns all year. Yet it was a "super" game -- the
brainchild of Faith's head coach, Kris Hogan.

Gainesville State is a maximum-security correctional facility that
houses adolescents who have had few breaks and lots of run-ins with the
law. They have convictions for robbery, assault, and drugs. Many have
no family members who keep in touch with them -- and have nowhere to go
when their sentences end.

Here was Coach Hogan's idea: Let's play the kids from Gainesville
State, show them the love of Christ, let them know they are just as
valuable as anybody else on Planet Earth, and pray it will help them
see life a bit differently.

Some of his own players were struggling to get it. "Imagine if you
didn't have a home life," he explained. "Imagine if everybody has
pretty much given up on you. Now imagine what it would mean for
hundreds of people to suddenly believe in you." He thought it might
make a difference -- in both teams.

Now that was a super football game.

For that wonderful night in Texas, half of Faith's students, parents,
and fans sat on the opponent's side to cheer for them. Those 200-plus
souls cheered, shouted encouragement to the Gainesville players by
name, and otherwise did everything possible to make them feel special.

Wearing their seven-year-old shoulder pads and outdated helmets, the
boys on the field sensed something special. Accustomed to being feared
and avoided, they were being supported. "I never in my life thought I'd
hear people cheering for us to hit their kids," said Isaiah,
Gainesville's quarterback.

When the game ended -- with Faith Christian winning 33-14 -- the teams
gathered in the middle of the field. It was Isaiah's turn to surprise
everybody by asking to lead a prayer. "Lord, I don't know how this
happened, so I don't know how to say Thank You," he said, "but I never
would've known there was so many people in the world that cared about
us." The kids were taken to their team bus in handcuffs to go back to
jail. Each was handed a bag from a Faith player -- a bag that had a
burger, some fries, a soft drink, a Bible, and a personal note.

Now that was a super football game. A super night. A super way for some
young men to meet Jesus in a most unusual way.

Morning & Evening -- Matthew 1:21 and Matthew 1:21

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, February 8, 2009

MORNING:

"Thou shalt call his name Jesus."
-- Matthew 1:21

When a person is dear, everything connected with him becomes dear for
his sake. Thus, so precious is the person of the Lord Jesus in the
estimation of all true believers, that everything about him they
consider to be inestimable beyond all price. "All thy garments smell of
myrrh, and aloes, and cassia," said David, as if the very vestments of
the Saviour were so sweetened by his person that he could not but love
them. Certain it is, that there is not a spot where that hallowed foot
hath trodden-there is not a word which those blessed lips have
uttered-nor a thought which his loving Word has revealed-which is not
to us precious beyond all price. And this is true of the names of
Christ-they are all sweet in the believer's ear. Whether he be called
the Husband of the Church, her Bridegroom, her Friend; whether he be
styled the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world-the King, the
Prophet, or the Priest-every title of our Master-Shiloh, Emmanuel,
Wonderful, the Mighty Counsellor-every name is like the honeycomb
dropping with honey, and luscious are the drops that distil from it.
But if there be one name sweeter than another in the believer's ear, it
is the name of Jesus. Jesus! it is the name which moves the harps of
heaven to melody. Jesus! the life of all our joys. If there be one name
more charming, more precious than another, it is this name. It is woven
into the very warp and woof of our psalmody. Many of our hymns begin
with it, and scarcely any, that are good for anything, end without it.
It is the sum total of all delights. It is the music with which the
bells of heaven ring; a song in a word; an ocean for comprehension,
although a drop for brevity; a matchless oratorio in two syllables; a
gathering up of the hallelujahs of eternity in five letters.

"Jesus, I love thy charming name,
'Tis music to mine ear."

EVENING:

"He shall save his people from their sins."
-- Matthew 1:21

Many persons, if they are asked what they understand by salvation, will
reply, "Being saved from hell and taken to heaven." This is one result
of salvation, but it is not one tithe of what is contained in that
boon. It is true our Lord Jesus Christ does redeem all his people from
the wrath to come; he saves them from the fearful condemnation which
their sins had brought upon them; but his triumph is far more complete
than this. He saves his people "from their sins." Oh! sweet deliverance
from our worst foes. Where Christ works a saving work, he casts Satan
from his throne, and will not let him be master any longer. No man is a
true Christian if sin reigns in his mortal body. Sin will be in us-it
will never be utterly expelled till the spirit enters glory; but it
will never have dominion. There will be a striving for dominion-a
lusting against the new law and the new spirit which God has
implanted-but sin will never get the upper hand so as to be absolute
monarch of our nature. Christ will be Master of the heart, and sin must
be mortified. The Lion of the tribe of Judah shall prevail, and the
dragon shall be cast out. Professor! is sin subdued in you? If your
life is unholy your heart is unchanged, and if your heart is unchanged
you are an unsaved person. If the Saviour has not sanctified you,
renewed you, given you a hatred of sin and a love of holiness, he has
done nothing in you of a saving character. The grace which does not
make a man better than others is a worthless counterfeit. Christ saves
his people, not in their sins, but from them. "Without holiness no man
shall see the Lord." "Let every one that nameth the name of Christ
depart from iniquity." If not saved from sin, how shall we hope to be
counted among his people. Lord, save me now from all evil, and enable
me to honour my Saviour.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Instantaneous And Insistent Sanctification"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 8, 2009

INSTANTANEOUS AND INSISTENT SANCTIFICATION

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1th+5:23-24&sr=1

When we pray to be sanctified, are we prepared to face the standard
of these verses? We take the term sanctification much too lightly.
Are we prepared for what sanctification will cost? It will cost an
intense narrowing of all our interests on earth, and an immense
broadening of all our interests in God. Sanctification means intense
concentration on God's point of view. It means every power of body,
soul and spirit chained and kept for God's purpose only. Are we
prepared for God to do in us all that He separated us for? And then
after His work is done in us, are we prepared to separate ourselves
to God even as Jesus did? "For their sakes I sanctify Myself." The
reason some of us have not entered into the experience of
sanctification is that we have not realized the meaning of
sanctification from God's standpoint. Sanctification means being made
one with Jesus so that the disposition that ruled Him will rule us.
Are we prepared for what that will cost? It will cost everything that
is not of God in us.

Are we prepared to be caught up into the swing of this prayer of the
apostle Paul's? Are we prepared to say - "Lord, make me as holy as
You can make a sinner saved by grace"? Jesus has prayed that we might
be one with Him as He is one with the Father. The one and only
characteristic of the Holy Ghost in a man is a strong family likeness
to Jesus Christ, and freedom from everything that is unlike Him. Are
we prepared to set ourselves apart for the Holy Spirit's
ministrations in us?

CHOSEN FOR GLORY

Romans 9:21-24
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+9:21-24

Dear Father, ruler of the ages,

You, O God, are the potter who has the right over the clay to make
of it whatever you please. What if you, desiring to show your wrath
and to make known your power, have endured with much patience the
objects of wrath made for destruction? What if you put up with sin
in order to make known the riches of your glory to the objects of
mercy prepared for glory?

Thank you for selecting your chosen ones from every nation of the
earth. And thank you for preparing your chosen ones to share in
your glory.

Thank you, O holy and mighty God! I am overwhelmed! In the blessed
name of Jesus, the rock of our salvation, I pray. Amen.

Beyond Mourning

"What great blessings there are for the people that are sad
now! God will comfort them."

-- Matthew 5:4 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Paul told Christians in Rome, "Weep with those who weep" (Rom. 12:15).
Disciples face sadness for many reasons. Discipleship is not about
always being happy. It's about following the path of Jesus who was "a
man of sorrows and acquainted with grief" (Isa. 53:3). He surrendered
his rights to bless others. He surrendered his life to forgive the very
ones crucifying him. He saw through the facades of his culture and felt
the real needs of people whether they were ill, possessed, or simply
blind to the truth. To be a Christian -- a disciple of Jesus -- means
to care about people, their problems, and to "weep with those who
weep." But such mourning means comfort. Our sufferings, hardships, and
struggles will melt away in the eternal light of God's presence and
grace. Our heartbreak for those broken in our world will be replaced
with rejoicing when many we have loved join us at God's side eternally.
Those who mourn, who are deeply sad, they will be comforted!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God of all comfort, thank you for never abandoning me in the dark
hours of grief and pain. Thank you for listening to my complaints and
heartbreak when times are tough. Thank you for loving and not turning
away. I believe, dear Father, that all comfort comes from and is found
in you! So I ask that you help me see others in pain, that I might
share in bringing them your comfort. In Jesus' name. Amen.
