Today's Verse : Galatians 6:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 18, 2009

VERSE:
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we
will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

-- Galatians 6:9
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+6:9

THOUGHT:
Weariness is a part of life. Weariness is a part of ministry.
Weariness is definitely something that overtakes us when we set our
hearts on doing good for others. The wonderful blessing of God,
however, is that he will renew us and sustain us and rekindle us.
He does it through the encouraging word of a friend. He does it
through his presence, the Holy Spirit in us. He does it through
songs that lift our hearts. He does it through Scripture and
prayer. So while our bodies and spirits may get weary, let's not
let our hands fall idle. If we will serve with faithfulness,
discipline, and integrity, God's grace will empower us to do what
he has called us to do.

PRAYER:
Holy and righteous Father, as I face the challenges of life, I
need your strength. Please empower me through your Spirit who lives
within me. Give me the courage to continue when I am tired,
discouraged, and confused. I trust that as I seek to honor you, you
will bless me with the strength I need to continue as I live to
bring honor to you. In Jesus' name I ask this. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Beware the Quick Fix, by Rubel Shelly

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know
that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and
character, hope (Romans 5:3-4 TNIV).

Careful planning puts you ahead in the long run; hurry and scurry
puts you further behind (Proverbs 21:5 MSG).

Although our intellects know better, something about human beings
continues to make us suckers to the idea of a quick fix. So
entrepreneurial hucksters regularly come along with goofy ideas that
garner millions. Then they move on and leave no forwarding address.

Western obsession with weight and appearance seems to make us
particularly susceptible to claims about products that promise fitness
without effort, weight loss without sweat. One company made big money
selling its anti-cellulite sneakers. Another touts electrical muscle
stimulation and weight-loss water. People love to think they've found
an easy way to their goals.

Doctors and fitness experts tell us that healthy eating combined with
regular exercise is the best way to slim down. One requires
self-discipline, and the other is work. Who wants to pay the price of
either, when there is a no-strain, no-pain alternative? Who doesn't
want to think there is an easier way?

In other contexts, it is the person who deceives himself into thinking
he can continue to drink after a couple of DUIs and a job loss. It is
the one who tells herself that an "innocent flirtation" at the office
means nothing. It is parents who refuse to take seriously their child's
brush with the law. It is a family trying to get all it wants with
credit cards instead of saving. It is the person who won't own up to
responsibility and apologize for betraying a confidence and hurting a
friend.

Want to know why counseling doesn't work for many troubled marriages?
It turns up areas of the relationship that need work over time. But
immature and selfish people want a quick fix.

Perseverance over time in pursuit of a noble and worthwhile goal.

Want to know why so many companies fail? It will take too much hard
work over too long a period of time to correct problems, replace
incompetent people, and penetrate new markets. Lacking a quick fix,
there is bankruptcy.

Want to know why once-thriving churches die? Somebody gets hooked on
the notion that spirituality is a new program or gimmick rather than
fruit-bearing by the gentle presence of the Holy Spirit. So members go
church-hopping again.

One of the virtues that gets too little attention these days is
persistence. Not stubbornness. Not "pig-headedness" and inflexibility.
But perseverance over time in pursuit of a noble and worthwhile goal.

It is interesting to me that the Bible places perseverance midway
between suffering and character (Romans 5:3-4). There's just no
shortcut from one to the other.

Morning & Evening -- Genesis 25:11 and Ezekiel 35:10

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

MORNING:

"Isaac dwelt by the well Lahai-roi."
-- Genesis 25:11

Hagar had once found deliverance there and Ishmael had drank from the
water so graciously revealed by the God who liveth and seeth the sons
of men; but this was a merely casual visit, such as worldlings pay to
the Lord in times of need, when it serves their turn. They cry to him
in trouble, but forsake him in prosperity. Isaac dwelt there, and made
the well of the living and all-seeing God his constant source of
supply. The usual tenor of a man's life, the dwelling of his soul, is
the true test of his state. Perhaps the providential visitation
experienced by Hagar struck Isaac's mind, and led him to revere the
place; its mystical name endeared it to him; his frequent musings by
its brim at eventide made him familiar with the well; his meeting
Rebecca there had made his spirit feel at home near the spot; but best
of all, the fact that he there enjoyed fellowship with the living God,
had made him select that hallowed ground for his dwelling. Let us learn
to live in the presence of the living God; let us pray the Holy Spirit
that this day, and every other day, we may feel, "Thou God seest me."
May the Lord Jehovah be as a well to us, delightful, comforting,
unfailing, springing up unto eternal life. The bottle of the creature
cracks and dries up, but the well of the Creator never fails; happy is
he who dwells at the well, and so has abundant and constant supplies
near at hand. The Lord has been a sure helper to others: his name is
Shaddai, God All-sufficient; our hearts have often had most delightful
intercourse with him; through him our soul has found her glorious
Husband, the Lord Jesus; and in him this day we live, and move, and
have our being; let us, then, dwell in closest fellowship with him.
Glorious Lord, constrain us that we may never leave thee, but dwell by
the well of the living God.

EVENING:

"Whereas the Lord was there."
-- Ezekiel 35:10

Edom's princes saw the whole country left desolate, and counted upon
its easy conquest; but there was one great difficulty in their
way-quite unknown to them-"The Lord was there"; and in his presence lay
the special security of the chosen land. Whatever may be the
machinations and devices of the enemies of God's people, there is still
the same effectual barrier to thwart their design. The saints are God's
heritage, and he is in the midst of them, and will protect his own.
What comfort this assurance yields us in our troubles and spiritual
conflicts! We are constantly opposed, and yet perpetually preserved!
How often Satan shoots his arrows against our faith, but our faith
defies the power of hell's fiery darts; they are not only turned aside,
but they are quenched upon its shield, for "the Lord is there." Our
good works are the subjects of Satan's attacks. A saint never yet had a
virtue or a grace which was not the target for hellish bullets: whether
it was hope bright and sparkling, or love warm and fervent, or patience
all-enduring, or zeal flaming like coals of fire, the old enemy of
everything that is good has tried to destroy it. The only reason why
anything virtuous or lovely survives in us is this, "the Lord is
there."

If the Lord be with us through life, we need not fear for our dying
confidence; for when we come to die, we shall find that "the Lord is
there"; where the billows are most tempestuous, and the water is most
chill, we shall feel the bottom, and know that it is good: our feet
shall stand upon the Rock of Ages when time is passing away. Beloved,
from the first of a Christian's life to the last, the only reason why
he does not perish is because "the Lord is there." When the God of
everlasting love shall change and leave his elect to perish, then may
the Church of God be destroyed; but not till then, because it is
written, JEHOVAH SHAMMAH, "The Lord is there."

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Initiative Against Depression"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 17, 2009

THE INITIATIVE AGAINST DEPRESSION

Arise and eat.

1 Kings 19:5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1ki+19:5&sr=1

The angel did not give Elijah a vision, or explain the Scriptures to
him, or do anything remarkable; he told Elijah to do the most
ordinary thing, viz., to get up and eat. If we were never depressed
we should not be alive; it is the nature of a crystal never to be
depressed. A human being is capable of depression, otherwise there
would be no capacity for exaltation. There are things that are
calculated to depress, things that are of the nature of death; and in
taking an estimate of yourself, always take into account the capacity
for depression.

When the Spirit of God comes He does not give us visions, He tells us
to do the most ordinary things conceivable. Depression is apt to turn
us away from the ordinary commonplace things of God's creation, but
whenever God comes, the inspiration is to do the most natural simple
thing - the things we would never have imagined God was in, and as we
do them we find He is there. The inspiration which comes to us in
this way is an initiative against depression; we have to do the next
thing and do it in the inspiration of God. If we do a thing in order
to overcome depression, we deepen the depression; but if the Spirit
of God makes us feel intuitively that we must do the thing, and we do
it, the depression is gone. Immediately we arise and obey, we enter
on a higher plane of life.

Please give me the mind of Christ and make my body a temple of the
spirit of holiness which is his.

Make me holy through and through. May my whole spirit, soul, and

Jesus Christ.

By the authority of Jesus and in his name I ask for this growth in

Fulfilled!

"Don't think that I have come to destroy the law {of Moses}
or the {teaching of the} prophets. I have not come to destroy
their teachings. I came to give full meaning to their
teachings."

-- Matthew 5:17 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus' statement is shocking! To the devoted Jewish believer, nothing
was more sacred than the Law. But Jesus comes and says he is the
fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. In other words, he is claiming
that the goal of Scripture is found in him. This incredibly audacious
claim of Jesus leaves no middle ground. He is either self-deluded or he
must be taken seriously. If we are to understand the heart, the
character, the holiness, the righteousness, and the will of God, Jesus
claims that we must look to him. He embodies and completes what the Law
had as its goal. He didn't come to offer some cheapened form of grace
(cf. Jude 4 & 2 Tim. 3:2-5). Instead, God wants us to look to Jesus and
see what he intended in his Law -- he wanted to benefit us with his
righteousness and bring us closer to him!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and Righteous God, thank you for sending Jesus. While I can read
and understand your demands for character, holiness, and righteousness
in your Law, in Jesus I see more fully your call to me to be righteous.
Please, dear Lord, work your work of salvation, and conform me to the
character of Christ. In the name of my Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, I
pray. Amen.
