VERSE:
The arrogance of man will be brought low and the pride of men
humbled; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day, and the idols
will totally disappear.
-- Isaiah 2:17-18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Isaiah+2:17-18

THOUGHT:
Sometimes when we get "too big for our britches," we find
ourselves humbled by a natural disaster, world war, incurable
disease, economic depression, or widespread social disorder. Our
arrogance can be a predictor of our own impending disasters. Is
there a general principle of our universe at work here? ("Pride
goes before a fall.") Or is this the active discipline of God at
work? I guess the answer is "Yes!" to both of these questions. Both
God and his world remind us that there is so much about our lives
we can't control. This passage, however, goes beyond the general
principles and it promises an ultimate day when human arrogance
will be eliminated and all false gods disappear. On that day, God's
children will rejoice and be glad! Until then, let's walk humbly
with our God.

PRAYER:
Dear Father in heaven, please humble me gently. I don't want to
lose my keen sense of your presence by becoming too full of myself.
Neither do I want to bring disaster upon myself or those I love.
Give me an undivided heart of devotion to you out of appreciation
for your grace. In the name of the Lord Jesus I pray. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

But Do You Trust Him?, by Bill Sherrill

So much is written in the Scriptures concerning faith. It was Abraham's
faith that led him to the land of promise and allowed him to be called
"the father of the faithful." He, along with many others, is given as
an example of faith in the Hebrew letter. It is there that the
statement is written, "And without faith, it is impossible to please
God ..." (Hebrews 11:6 NRS). The explanation is given, "for whoever
would approach him must believe that he exists and that he rewards
those who seek him." Jesus is quoted again and again as saying "If you
have faith ..." or "unless your faith ..." In the most important
reference of all, we are told, "He who believes [has faith] and is
baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned"
(Mark 16:16 NKJV).

What is the source of this faith?

The Scriptures claim, "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by
the word of God" (Romans 10:17 NKJV). My concern is whether or not each
of us has the faith written about in the Word. I am not thinking of
whether or not we believe in God, but rather, whether or not we believe
God. There is a significant difference.

James writes, "The demons believe -- and tremble" (James 2:19 NKJV). In
other words, one can believe in the existence of God without giving any
respect to what He says. Even those who profess to be Christians can do
that as well, can't we?

Do you live with the evidences of a life of trust?

To believe God is to accept His nature and the truth of what He tells
us. The world is filled with those who do not believe that there is a
god, or at least don't believe that Yahweh is the one true God. That is
a tragedy in its own right, but the greater tragedy is that many who do
accept God and profess belief in His Word, fail to show evidence of
that belief (Matthew 7:21-29).

Perhaps my point will be clearer if I use the phrase "trust completely"
for the idea of faith. To "trust completely" is more than mental
assent. It is to respond to that assent with actions that show the
trust. In a time when one of the greatest maladies seen in individuals
is anxiety, it is obvious that many have not laid hold of the teaching
of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5 through 7) when
the Lord said, "Be not anxious about anything." His explanation of
God's care for the lilies of the fields and the birds of the air falls
on ears deafened by the cares of the world. Or again when he said,
"Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness."

Do you live with the evidences of a life of trust? It is often
difficult, but always absolutely necessary. The struggle is real, but
the promise is greater. We, like the man who was told his son would be
healed if he would only believe, may often cry out "I believe, help my
unbelief" (Mark 9:24); but at least we are struggling in the right
direction.

Morning & Evening -- Philippians 4:11 and Nehemiah 9:20

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, February 16, 2008

MORNING:

"I have learned, in whatever state I am, therewith to be
content."
-- Philippians 4:11

These words show us that contentment is not a natural propensity of
man. "Ill weeds grow apace." Covetousness, discontent, and murmuring
are as natural to man as thorns are to the soil. We need not sow
thistles and brambles; they come up naturally enough, because they are
indigenous to earth: and so, we need not teach men to complain; they
complain fast enough without any education. But the precious things of
the earth must be cultivated. If we would have wheat, we must plough
and sow; if we want flowers, there must be the garden, and all the
gardener's care. Now, contentment is one of the flowers of heaven, and
if we would have it, it must be cultivated; it will not grow in us by
nature; it is the new nature alone that can produce it, and even then
we must be specially careful and watchful that we maintain and
cultivate the grace which God has sown in us. Paul says, "I have
learned ... to be content;" as much as to say, he did not know how at
one time. It cost him some pains to attain to the mystery of that great
truth. No doubt he sometimes thought he had learned, and then broke
down. And when at last he had attained unto it, and could say, "I have
learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content," he was an
old, grey-headed man, upon the borders of the grave-a poor prisoner
shut up in Nero's dungeon at Rome. We might well be willing to endure
Paul's infirmities, and share the cold dungeon with him, if we too
might by any means attain unto his good degree. Do not indulge the
notion that you can be contented with learning, or learn without
discipline. It is not a power that may be exercised naturally, but a
science to be acquired gradually. We know this from experience.
Brother, hush that murmur, natural though it be, and continue a
diligent pupil in the College of Content.

EVENING:

"Thy good Spirit."
-- Nehemiah 9:20

Common, too common is the sin of forgetting the Holy Spirit. This is
folly and ingratitude. He deserves well at our hands, for he is good,
supremely good. As God, he is good essentially. He shares in the
threefold ascription of Holy, holy, holy, which ascends to the Triune
Jehovah. Unmixed purity and truth, and grace is he. He is good
benevolently, tenderly bearing with our waywardness, striving with our
rebellious wills; quickening us from our death in sin, and then
training us for the skies as a loving nurse fosters her child. How
generous, forgiving, and tender is this patient Spirit of God. He is
good operatively. All his works are good in the most eminent degree: he
suggests good thoughts, prompts good actions, reveals good truths,
applies good promises, assists in good attainments, and leads to good
results. There is no spiritual good in all the world of which he is not
the author and sustainer, and heaven itself will owe the perfect
character of its redeemed inhabitants to his work. He is good
officially; whether as Comforter, Instructor, Guide, Sanctifier,
Quickener, or Intercessor, he fulfils his office well, and each work is
fraught with the highest good to the church of God. They who yield to
his influences become good, they who obey his impulses do good, they
who live under his power receive good. Let us then act towards so good
a person according to the dictates of gratitude. Let us revere his
person, and adore him as God over all, blessed for ever; let us own his
power, and our need of him by waiting upon him in all our holy
enterprises; let us hourly seek his aid, and never grieve him; and let
us speak to his praise whenever occasion occurs. The church will never
prosper until more reverently it believes in the Holy Ghost. He is so
good and kind, that it is sad indeed that he should be grieved by
slights and negligences.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Inspiration Of Spiritual Initiative"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 16, 2008

THE INSPIRATION OF SPIRITUAL INITIATIVE

Arise from the dead.

Ephesians 5:14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=eph+5:14&sr=1

All initiative is not inspired. A man may say to you - "Buck up, take
your disinclination by the throat, throw it overboard, and walk out
into the thing!" That is ordinary human initiative. But when the
Spirit of God comes in and says, in effect, "Buck up," we find that
the initiative is inspired.

We all have any number of visions and ideals when we are young, but
sooner or later we find that we have no power to make them real. We
cannot do the things we long to do, and we are apt to settle down to
the visions and ideals as dead, and God has to come and say - "Arise
from the dead." When the inspiration of God does come, it comes with
such miraculous power that we are able to arise from the dead and do
the impossible thing. The remarkable thing about spiritual initiative
is that the life comes after we do the "bucking up." God does not
give us overcoming life; He gives us life as we overcome. When the
inspiration of God comes, and He says - "Arise from the dead," we
have to get up; God does not lift us up. Our Lord said to the man
with the withered hand - "Stretch forth thy hand," and as soon as the
man did so, his hand was healed, but he had to take the initiative.
If we will do the overcoming, we shall find we are inspired of God
because He gives life immediately.

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+12:1-2

Dear Father, all worthy God,

I present my body to you, O Lord, as a living sacrifice. May it be
holy and pleasing to you.

Let this be my spiritual act of worship, not done at set times of
remembrance, but constantly, moment by moment, day by day, night by
night.

Let me not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world,
which is doomed to pass away. Instead, let me be transformed by the
renewing of my mind, so that I may be able to test and approve what
your holy will for me is - what is good, pleasing, and perfect.

By the authority of Jesus and in his name I ask for this growth in
grace. Amen.

Checking Out Jesus

Jesus went away with his followers to the lake. Many people
from Galilee followed him. Many, many people also came from
Judea, from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from the area across the
Jordan River, and from the area around Tyre and Sidon. These
people came because they heard about all the things Jesus was
doing.

-- Mark 3:7-8 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
So often the people who think they don't believe in Jesus have never
been exposed to Jesus. Jesus meets us in many ways, but there are at
least two ways that are crucial for most unbelievers. One of the most
important ways for folks to meet Jesus is by experiencing him through
the Gospel stories. (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John contain these Gospel
stories in the New Testament.) A second way for outsiders to experience
Jesus is through the presence of Jesus in the world today -- through
the compassion, care, and character of Jesus' Body, the people of his
church. In both of these cases, the invitation is nearly always the
same: "Come. See for yourself!" One of our biggest opportunities to
bring people to Christ is to invite them to meet Jesus and not just
trust what they've heard about him. So let's invite people to do this
by giving away free copies of the Gospels to others (The Bible
societies offer these very economically!), inviting them to appropriate
movies, or giving them historically accurate video copies of Jesus'
life. Let's invite folks to come "meet" Jesus and "see him for
themselves."

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, use me to invite people to come meet Jesus. Open my eyes to see
those searching for him and fashion my life so that it is an
appropriate example to them in their search. I pray this in Jesus'
name. Amen.
