Today's Verse : Philippians 2:14-15

\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 29, 2007

VERSE:
Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may
become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a
crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in
the universe.
-- Philippians 2:14-15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+2:14-15

THOUGHT:
I guess it's only natural to think that the problems of our own
time in history are due to the pervasive depravity of our own time.
Thankfully the Bible repeatedly reminds us that God's people have
always had to swim upstream against culture. As children of God, we
are to be bright stars in the dark night sky of our secular
culture. Rather than constantly complaining about our worldly
culture or our time in history, let's light the path for others to
see another way to live.

PRAYER:
Almighty God, thank you for calling me to such a high and holy
task. I want to shine like a star against the darkness of the
culture around me. Please help me as I seek to live a holy life
that has a redemptive influence on those around me who do not know
Jesus. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Pray 3

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Matthew 6:7 NIV

One of the verses I often keep in mind is Ecclesiastes 5:2b which says "God is in Heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few." It's a healthy reminder of my position as it relates to God. I'm reminded concerning prayer that I can't impress God with my words. What can I say that would impress God? Could I explain the way the moon rotates around the sun? Could I expand upon the ozone layer, or examine for Him the speed of sound as it relates to modern technology?

No, I can't impress God with my prayers. I believe this misunderstanding is why so many people are afraid to pray in public. They don't want to "mess up" and "say the wrong things". They don't want to embarrass themselves in front of other people. This is really, though, a wrong view of prayer. Prayer is not something we do for others, it is something we do with God. Prayer is our link to our Creator. If we don't have any problem speaking to our closest friend, we shouldn't have any problem speaking to our Heavenly Father.

Is there something in your life for which you could use prayer? Too many times I witness people asking everyone else to pray for them, but failing to pray for themselves. God wants to hear from us personally. He loves us and cares for us beyond what we can imagine. Prayer is an opportunity He has given us to come boldly into His presence. We have an invitation to visit with the One who Fathers the rain! What an awesome thought!

Oh, Lord, teach us to pray!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

KEEPING THE CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS, by Steve Ridgell

The Christmas season is here and I already hear some of the Christian
community beginning the annual discussions. Who took the Christ out of
Christmas? Or, "Jesus: the reason for the season". So maybe it is time
for a few reflections about this time of year. I do not think that most
people view Christmas as a religious holiday. After all, most people
are not really Christian. I know that most of the world sing the
religious songs (Silent Night, Away in a Manger, O Holy Night), and
many people go to church the Sunday before Christmas (second in
attendance only to Easter). We even see lots of manger scenes and hear
talk about baby Jesus and his birthday.

I am afraid that it becomes very easy and convenient to focus on the
Christ in Christmas and then live like every one else the rest of the
year. Christianity is not the celebration of a season, but a commitment
to a lifestyle. We are about peace on earth, giving and family every
day of the year. Maybe Christians are the ones that do not need to
celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. Jesus is the reason for
December 25, and July 12, and March 5, and September 22, and every day
of my life as a Christian. Celebrating a birthday does not make a
family. The other 364 days together make a family. The real good news
for our world is not that we should celebrate this special time of
thinking about Jesus, but to hear that Christmas is just one of a
lifetime of days to celebrate. And if the world is thinking about Jesus
during this time, then we have even more opportunities to testify to
the real good news.

Maybe Christians are the ones that do not need to celebrate Christmas
as a religious holiday.

So will I think about Jesus this Christmas? Yes I will; just like I
will think about him and celebrate his life, death, and resurrection
every day till he comes back to take me home. If you want to make
Christmas a religious holiday, be sure it is not the only time you
celebrate Jesus.

If you want to know more about the Jesus of life, not just a holiday,
write me at steve@hopeforlife.org.

Morning & Evening -- 3 John 3 and Esther 10:3

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

MORNING:

"For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified
of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the
truth."
-- 3 John 3

The truth was in Gaius, and Gaius walked in the truth. If the first had
not been the case, the second could never have occurred; and if the
second could not be said of him the first would have been a mere
pretence. Truth must enter into the soul, penetrate and saturate it, or
else it is of no value. Doctrines held as a matter of creed are like
bread in the hand, which ministers no nourishment to the frame; but
doctrine accepted by the heart, is as food digested, which, by
assimilation, sustains and builds up the body. In us truth must be a
living force, an active energy, an indwelling reality, a part of the
woof and warp of our being. If it be in us, we cannot henceforth part
with it. A man may lose his garments or his limbs, but his inward parts
are vital, and cannot be torn away without absolute loss of life. A
Christian can die, but he cannot deny the truth. Now it is a rule of
nature that the inward affects the outward, as light shines from the
centre of the lantern through the glass: when, therefore, the truth is
kindled within, its brightness soon beams forth in the outward life and
conversation. It is said that the food of certain worms colours the
cocoons of silk which they spin: and just so the nutriment upon which a
man's inward nature lives gives a tinge to every word and deed
proceeding from him. To walk in the truth, imports a life of integrity,
holiness, faithfulness, and simplicity-the natural product of those
principles of truth which the gospel teaches, and which the Spirit of
God enables us to receive. We may judge of the secrets of the soul by
their manifestation in the man's conversation. Be it ours to-day, O
gracious Spirit, to be ruled and governed by thy divine authority, so
that nothing false or sinful may reign in our hearts, lest it extend
its malignant influence to our daily walk among men.

EVENING:

"Seeking the wealth of his people."
-- Esther 10:3

Mordecai was a true patriot, and therefore, being exalted to the
highest position under Ahasuerus, he used his eminence to promote the
prosperity of Israel. In this he was a type of Jesus, who, upon his
throne of glory, seeks not his own, but spends his power for his
people. It were well if every Christian would be a Mordecai to the
church, striving according to his ability for its prosperity. Some are
placed in stations of affluence and influence, let them honour their
Lord in the high places of the earth, and testify for Jesus before
great men. Others have what is far better, namely, close fellowship
with the King of kings, let them be sure to plead daily for the weak of
the Lord's people, the doubting, the tempted, and the comfortless. It
will redound to their honour if they make much intercession for those
who are in darkness and dare not draw nigh unto the mercy seat.
Instructed believers may serve their Master greatly if they lay out
their talents for the general good, and impart their wealth of heavenly
learning to others, by teaching them the things of God. The very least
in our Israel may at least seek the welfare of his people; and his
desire, if he can give no more, shall be acceptable. It is at once the
most Christlike and the most happy course for a believer to cease from
living to himself. He who blesses others cannot fail to be blessed
himself. On the other hand, to seek our own personal greatness is a
wicked and unhappy plan of life, its way will be grievous and its end
will be fatal.

Here is the place to ask thee, my friend, whether thou art to the best
of thy power seeking the wealth of the church in thy neighbourhood? I
trust thou art not doing it mischief by bitterness and scandal, nor
weakening it by thy neglect. Friend, unite with the Lord's poor, bear
their cross, do them all the good thou canst, and thou shalt not miss
thy reward.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Bounty Of The Destitute"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 28, 2007

THE BOUNTY OF THE DESTITUTE

Being justified freely by His grace...

Romans 3:24

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ro+3:24&sr=1

The Gospel of the grace of God awakens an intense longing in human
souls and an equally intense resentment, because the revelation which
it brings is not palatable. There is a certain pride in man that will
give and give, but to come and accept is another thing. I will give
my life to martyrdom, I will give myself in consecration, I will do
anything, but do not humiliate me to the level of the most
hell-deserving sinner and tell me that all I have to do is to accept
the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

We have to realize that we cannot earn or win anything from God; we
must either receive it as a gift or do without it. The greatest
blessing spiritually is the knowledge that we are destitute; until we
get there Our Lord is powerless. He can do nothing for us if we think
we are sufficient of ourselves, we have to enter into His Kingdom
through the door of destitution. As long as we are rich, possessed of
anything in the way of pride or independence, God cannot do anything
for us. It is only when we get hungry spiritually that we receive the
Holy Spirit. The gift of the essential nature of God is made
effectual in us by the Holy Spirit, He imparts to us the quickening
life of Jesus, which puts "the beyond" within, and immediately "the
beyond" has come within, it rises up to "the above," and we are
lifted into the domain where Jesus lives. (John 3:5.)

Praying with Paul : "My Joy and Crown"

MY JOY AND CROWN

Philippians 4:1

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+4:1

Dear Father,

Help me to stand firm in the Lord, not only for my own sake but
because I am someone's joy and crown, the object of their love and
longing.

May I reach out to others to call them to follow the example
Christ. Let them become my joy and crown, the objects of my love
and longing.

Especially, Father, let me influence my family - spouse, children,
in-laws, grandchildren - to walk in your way and to long for your
day.

I love them dearly and long for their salvation. Draw them to your
heart of love.

In the name of Jesus I ask these things. Amen.

WJD! -- His Lasting Word -- Luke 21:29-33

His Lasting Word

Then Jesus told this story: "Look at all the trees. The fig
tree is a good example. When it becomes green (grows buds),
you know that summer is near. It is the same with these
things I told you would happen. When you see all these things
happening, then you will know that God's kingdom is coming
very soon. "I tell you the truth. All these things will
happen while people of this time are still living! The whole
world, earth and sky, will be destroyed; but the words I have
said will never be destroyed!"

-- Luke 21:29-33 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
While the Temple will become rubble, Jerusalem will be destroyed, and
the heavens and the earth will pass away, one thing will last forever:
Jesus' word! His promises are faithful and secure. His words are true
and lasting. So let's give thanks for his word and for his sharing it
with us.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, thank you for the message of Jesus and for every word he
spoke and every promise he made. Help me as I seek to learn them, to
incorporate them into my daily life, and to build my future upon their
truths and promises. In Jesus' name. Amen.
