=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

More than One Way to Hit a Homerun, by Steve Higginbotham

You've probably already heard what happened recently when Central
Washington and Western Oregon faced off against each other in a
softball game -- for video and other links, see the links list at the
bottom of this article. At stake was a bid to the NCAA's Division II
playoffs.

Western Oregon's, Sara Tucholsky came to the plate with two runners on
base. Tucholsky was a lifetime .153 hitter and had never hit a homerun.
However, things were about to change. She connected on a pitch and hit
a three run homer! Due to her excitement, she missed first base. So she
stopped and turned to go back to the base. But when she made the sudden
stop and turn, she collapsed to the ground, having torn her ACL.

The people in the stands were shedding tears.

That's when things got interesting. Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace,
two players on the opposing team offered to carry her around the bases
so that her homerun would not be counted as a single. So these two
players gently picked up Tucholsky, and carried her around the bases,
allowing her to tap each base along the way. After reaching home plate,
these two girls handed Tucholsky off to her own teammates.

The players, the coaches, and the people in the stands were applauding
and shedding tears because of this act of compassion. When asked later
why she did it, Mallory Holtman said that it was senior day and that if
it had happened to her, she would have wanted someone to come to her
aid.

In other words, she was practicing the "Golden Rule" -- "Do unto others
as you would have them do unto you" (Matthew 7:12 paraphrased). Isn't
it amazing how following the common principles of Jesus makes such an
impact for good in our world? Open your eyes to the possibilities
before you. You may not have the opportunity to carry someone around
the bases; but if you look around at school or at your job, you will
find things you can do that can have just as much impact on the lives
of others.

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 138:8 and Isaiah 43:24

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, May 23, 2008

MORNING:

"The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me."
-- Psalms 138:8

Most manifestly the confidence which the Psalmist here expressed was a
divine confidence. He did not say, "I have grace enough to perfect that
which concerneth me-my faith is so steady that it will not stagger-my
love is so warm that it will never grow cold-my resolution is so firm
that nothing can move it; no, his dependence was on the Lord alone. If
we indulge in any confidence which is not grounded on the Rock of ages,
our confidence is worse than a dream, it will fall upon us, and cover
us with its ruins, to our sorrow and confusion. All that Nature spins
time will unravel, to the eternal confusion of all who are clothed
therein. The Psalmist was wise, he rested upon nothing short of the
Lord's work. It is the Lord who has begun the good work within us; it
is he who has carried it on; and if he does not finish it, it never
will be complete. If there be one stitch in the celestial garment of
our righteousness which we are to insert ourselves, then we are lost;
but this is our confidence, the Lord who began will perfect. He has
done it all, must do it all, and will do it all. Our confidence must
not be in what we have done, nor in what we have resolved to do, but
entirely in what the Lord will do. Unbelief insinuates- "You will never
be able to stand. Look at the evil of your heart, you can never conquer
sin; remember the sinful pleasures and temptations of the world that
beset you, you will be certainly allured by them and led astray." Ah!
yes, we should indeed perish if left to our own strength. If we had
alone to navigate our frail vessels over so rough a sea, we might well
give up the voyage in despair; but, thanks be to God, he will perfect
that which concerneth us, and bring us to the desired haven. We can
never be too confident when we confide in him alone, and never too much
concerned to have such a trust.

EVENING:

"Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money."
-- Isaiah 43:24

Worshippers at the temple were wont to bring presents of sweet perfumes
to be burned upon the altar of God: but Israel, in the time of her
backsliding, became ungenerous, and made but few votive offerings to
her Lord: this was an evidence of coldness of heart towards God and his
house. Reader, does this never occur with you? Might not the complaint
of the text be occasionally, if not frequently, brought against you?
Those who are poor in pocket, if rich in faith, will be accepted none
the less because their gifts are small; but, poor reader, do you give
in fair proportion to the Lord, or is the widow's mite kept back from
the sacred treasury? The rich believer should be thankful for the
talent entrusted to him, but should not forget his large
responsibility, for where much is given much will be required; but,
rich reader, are you mindful of your obligations, and rendering to the
Lord according to the benefit received? Jesus gave his blood for us,
what shall we give to him? We are his, and all that we have, for he has
purchased us unto himself -can we act as if we were our own? O for more
consecration! and to this end, O for more love! Blessed Jesus, how good
it is of thee to accept our sweet cane bought with money! nothing is
too costly as a tribute to thine unrivalled love, and yet thou dost
receive with favour the smallest sincere token of affection! Thou dost
receive our poor forget-me-nots and love-tokens as though they were
intrinsically precious, though indeed they are but as the bunch of wild
flowers which the child brings to its mother. Never may we grow
niggardly towards thee, and from this hour never may we hear thee
complain of us again for withholding the gifts of our love. We will
give thee the first fruits of our increase, and pay thee tithes of all,
and then we will confess "of thine own have we given thee."

My Utmost For His Highest : "Careful Infidelity"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 23, 2008

CAREFUL INFIDELITY

Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or
what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body what ye shall
put on.

Matthew 6:25

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+6:25&sr=1

Jesus sums up common-sense carefulness in a disciple as infidelity.
If we have received the Spirit of God, He will press through and say
- Now where does God come in in this relationship, in this mapped out
holiday, in these new books? He always presses the point until we
learn to make Him our first consideration. Whenever we put other
things first, there is confusion.

"Take no thought . . ." don't take the pressure of forethought upon
yourself. It is not only wrong to worry, it is infidelity, because
worrying means that we do not think that God can look after the
practical details of our lives, and it is never any thing else that
worries us. Have you ever noticed what Jesus said would choke the
word He puts in? The devil? No, the cares of this world. It is the
little worries always. I will not trust where I cannot see, that is
where infidelity begins. The only cure for infidelity is obedience to
the Spirit.

The great word of Jesus to His disciples is abandon.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Heaven Five

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Heaven Five
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?" But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or even look inside. Revelation 5:2-5 NIV

Can you imagine the predicament John was in? Here he had been granted the vision of Heaven. He had been given a rare opportunity to see a glimmer of eternity and report back to us. His writings are so descriptive and not specific, because he can't come up with words that adequately portray what he has seen. What an awesome opportunity!

But then, oh man, what is he going to do? Before him, right before his very eyes is the scroll, the deed to all of Earth, the rights to our eternity, rolled up and sealed. Our future, and the future of the world, were in this scroll. John knew this full well, but the devestating part is that no one...not one s oul...could be found worthy to open the scroll. It would be like going to the reading of your wealthy aunt's will, only to find that the cover letter said she had to open it (and she's dead).

John couldn't handle it. He broke down. What would you do? Everything John had preached and taught that one day we as Christians would reign with Christ forever and ever. And now, that dream, rolled up in a scroll, and no one is worthy to open it. How would you feel?

But then, there came the Lamb, the precious Lamb, looking as if He had been slain. The Lamb, Jesus Christ, the precious son of God; He is worthy to open the scroll. (vs 6) Praise God, Jesus is worthy! Have no fear John! We are saved through the Lamb!

Worthy is the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world! The Lamb of God is worthy of all your praise today!

Praying with Paul : "My Life, God's Message"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

MY LIFE, GOD'S MESSAGE

2 Corinthians 3:3-6

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+3:3-6

Dear Father, all-sufficient God,

Let me be a letter from Christ written to people who need to hear
the Good News, written not on paper with ink but on hearts with my
loving attitudes and actions.

I claim no self-sufficiency, but I believe the sufficiency of your
grace qualifies me to serve as a spokesman for your new covenant. I
hope through Christ that you might use me this way. Grant me this
sufficiency as I rely totally on you.

Thank you that the covenant itself is not a written code that
kills but a life-giving communication of the Spirit.

In the name of Jesus, confident of his sufficiency, I make these
requests. Amen.

WJD! -- You Are the Messiah! -- Mark 8:29

You Are the Messiah!

Then Jesus asked, "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You
are the Christ."

-- Mark 8:29 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
This is the key question that Jesus asks each of us: "Who do you say I
am?" Our answer is crucial! Our whole life hangs in the balance as we
answer this question. Yes, Peter says, "You are the Messiah." However,
Jesus is much more than the Messiah; he is our Lord; he is our Savior;
he is our brother; he is our King; he is our High Priest; ... So who do
you say that Jesus is? (Today, especially, please read the cross
referenced Scriptures to this devotional and be reminded of how
important Jesus is to you!)

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O LORD God Almighty, my Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus. He is so
much more than words can capture. He exhausts the meaning of every
title. I praise you for your plan and purpose in sending him. In Jesus'
name I offer my prayer and my life to you. Amen.

VERSE:
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and
through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at
the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
-- 1 Thessalonians 5:23

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+5:23

THOUGHT:
We know that true righteousness and holiness are qualities
possessed perfectly by only God. Amazingly, God uses his Spirit to
make those qualities a growing reality in our lives when we will
yield to his leadership. Yesterday, we committed to let the Spirit
work on maturing us in our weakest areas. Let's take an extra five
or ten minutes sometime today, open God's Word, and read several
passages of Scripture that apply to our specific vulnerabilities.
Then, let's ask God's Spirit to transform us in these areas to be
more like Christ!

PRAYER:
Dear Father, may Jesus come soon with grace and glory! May I be
found blameless on that day, dear Father, not by my power and
effort, but because of your transforming power at work within me.
In Jesus' name I ask this. Amen.
