=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Can You Hear the Music?, by Rubel Shelly

It was an experiment set up more than a year ago now by the Washington
Post. I don't know how I missed it, and most of you may have seen the
online video clip of the event already. In case you haven't, you can
get more details and see what I am about to describe online. (Click the
link if you are on the website or go to the first article listed
below!)

In what the paper dubbed "an experiment in context, perception and
priorities," the newspaper enlisted the aid of an internationally
famous virtuoso musician. Joshua Bell (image from JoshuaBell.com), who
would shortly play to a standing-room-only audience in the Washington
area, played some of the world's most beautiful classical music at a
Metro station. As more than a thousand people walked through, he played
for just over 40 minutes. And hardly anyone noticed or cared.

The violinist played Bach and Schubert. He played them on a
Stradivarius for which he had paid $3.5 million. With his violin case
open before him and a few bills tossed in to prime the pump, his
45-minute concert took in a total of some $32 from a grand total of 27
donors. And that for a man who gets paid at the rate of $1000 per
minute to perform in packed symphony halls.

What are we to make of such an event? I'm not sure. Maybe it means too
many of us are too busy to notice people -- their skills, their place
in our world, their value to God.

Maybe it underscores how poorly we assign value in life. Several people
walked by with their iPods on and never even turned their heads to the
music being played for them. At a level deeper than the aesthetic,
money, sex, and power trump just about everything – including virtue,
self-discipline, and purity.

There is always more beauty in this world than most of us take the time
to appreciate.

Perhaps it means that we humans are sometimes so self-absorbed that we
diminish others -- in their own eyes. Bell said the experience made him
terribly uncomfortable. The man accustomed to standing ovations heard
only thunderous silence and shuffling feet as a piece came to its end.

For today, however, let me suggest this as a primary meaning for your
reflection: There is always more beauty in this world than most of us
take the time to appreciate. There are the manifold beauties of nature
-- sunrise and sunset, falling snow and blooming flowers, majestic
mountains and roaring oceans; they are God's gifts for our
appreciation, enjoyment, and stewardship.

Yes, there is music -- classical, country, jazz, and rock. There is
rest at the end of a hard day's work. There is conversation between
friends, playful time spent with laughing children, and a walk with
someone you know loves you.

With eyes to see and ears to hear, God will show you so much beauty.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.

They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.

Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world (Psalm 19:1-4 TNIV).

Morning & Evening -- 2 Kings 7:3 and Genesis 8:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, March 13, 2008

MORNING:

"Why sit we here until we die?"
-- 2 Kings 7:3

Dear reader, this little book was mainly intended for the edification
of believers, but if you are yet unsaved, our heart yearns over you:
and we would fain say a word which may be blessed to you. Open your
Bible, and read the story of the lepers, and mark their position, which
was much the same as yours. If you remain where you are you must
perish; if you go to Jesus you can but die. "Nothing venture, nothing
win," is the old proverb, and in your case the venture is no great one.
If you sit still in sullen despair, no one can pity you when your ruin
comes; but if you die with mercy sought, if such a thing were possible,
you would be the object of universal sympathy. None escape who refuse
to look to Jesus; but you know that, at any rate, some are saved who
believe in him, for certain of your own acquaintances have received
mercy: then why not you? The Ninevites said, "Who can tell?" Act upon
the same hope, and try the Lord's mercy. To perish is so awful, that if
there were but a straw to catch at, the instinct of self-preservation
should lead you to stretch out your hand. We have thus been talking to
you on your own unbelieving ground, we would now assure you, as from
the Lord, that if you seek him he will be found of you. Jesus casts out
none who come unto him. You shall not perish if you trust him; on the
contrary, you shall find treasure far richer than the poor lepers
gathered in Syria's deserted camp. May the Holy Spirit embolden you to
go at once, and you shall not believe in vain. When you are saved
yourself, publish the good news to others. Hold not your peace; tell
the King's household first, and unite with them in fellowship; let the
porter of the city, the minister, be informed of your discovery, and
then proclaim the good news in every place. The Lord save thee ere the
sun goes down this day.

EVENING:

"Then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in
unto him into the ark."
-- Genesis 8:9

Wearied out with her wanderings, the dove returns at length to the ark
as her only resting place. How heavily she flies-she will drop-she will
never reach the ark! But she struggles on. Noah has been looking out
for his dove all day long, and is ready to receive her. She has just
strength to reach the edge of the ark, she can hardly alight upon it,
and is ready to drop, when Noah puts forth his hand and pulls her in
unto him. Mark that: "pulled her in unto him." She did not fly right in
herself, but was too fearful, or too weary to do so. She flew as far as
she could, and then he put forth his hand and pulled her in unto him.
This act of mercy was shown to the wandering dove, and she was not
chidden for her wanderings. Just as she was she was pulled into the
ark. So you, seeking sinner, with all your sin, will be received. "Only
return"-those are God's two gracious words-"only return." What! nothing
else? No, "only return." She had no olive branch in her mouth this
time, nothing at all but just herself and her wanderings; but it is
"only return," and she does return, and Noah pulls her in. Fly, thou
wanderer; fly thou fainting one, dove as thou art, though thou thinkest
thyself to be black as the raven with the mire of sin, back, back to
the Saviour. Every moment thou waitest does but increase thy misery;
thine attempts to plume thyself and make thyself fit for Jesus are all
vanity. Come thou to him just as thou art. "Return, thou backsliding
Israel." He does not say, "Return, thou repenting Israel" (there is
such an invitation doubtless), but "thou backsliding one," as a
backslider with all thy backslidings about thee, Return, return,
return! Jesus is waiting for thee! He will stretch forth his hand and
"pull thee in"-in to himself, thy heart's true home.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Abandonment Of God"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 13, 2008

THE ABANDONMENT OF GOD

God so loved the world that He gave...

John 3:16

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+3:16&sr=1

Salvation is not merely deliverance from sin, nor the experience of
personal holiness; the salvation of God is deliverance out of self
entirely into union with Himself. My experimental knowledge of
salvation will be along the line of deliverance from sin and of
personal holiness; but salvation means that the Spirit of God has
brought me into touch with God's personality, and I am thrilled with
something infinitely greater than myself, I am caught up into the
abandonment of God.

To say that we are called to preach holiness or sanctification, is to
get into a side eddy. We are called to proclaim Jesus Christ. The
fact that He saves from sin and makes us holy is part of the effect
of the wonderful abandonment of God.

Abandonment never produces the consciousness of its own effort,
because the whole life is taken up with the One to Whom we abandon.
Beware of talking about abandonment if you know nothing about it, and
you will never know anything about it until you have realized that
John 3:16 means that God gave Himself absolutely. In our abandonment
we give ourselves over to God just as God gave Himself for us,
without any calculation. The consequence of abandonment never enters
into our outlook because our life is taken up with Him.

Praying with Paul : "The Authority of the Cross"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

THE AUTHORITY OF THE CROSS

1 Corinthians 1:22-25

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+1:22-25

Dear Father, confounder of worldly wisdom,

What you have caused us to preach is "Christ crucified," a
stumbling block to tradition-followers, like the Jews, and folly to
philosophy-lovers, like the Greeks. But to us who are called, he is
your power and your wisdom. For we believe that your foolishness is
wiser than our wisdom, and your weakness is stronger than our
strength.

I am thankful that you have taken most of us from the lower
echelons of society. Not many of us are wise according to worldly
standards, not many are powerful, not many are of noble birth.

You chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, what is
weak to shame the strong, what is low and despised, even things
that don't yet exist, to bring to nothing the things that are.

May my weakness and foolishness be transformed into usefulness
through your strength and wisdom. In the name of Jesus and by his
wisdom and authority I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Alone to Mentor and Explain -- Mark 4:35-36

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

Alone to Mentor and Explain

That day, at evening, Jesus said to his followers, "Come with
me across the lake." Jesus and the followers left the people
there. They went in the same boat that Jesus was already
sitting in. There were also other boats with them.

-- Mark 4:35-36 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Some things need to be shared in private. God's servants can't be all
public all the time. Jesus often withdrew to pray. In addition, he
pulled away from the crowds so his apostles could rest and rekindle
their spirits. He also left the crowds behind so he could more fully
teach these people he would soon leave to continue his work. One
dimension of teaching is preparing other teachers. That requires us to
leave the crowds and spend focused time on those whom the church needs
for the future. While we may want to simply dismiss this practice as a
cultural phenomenon, we should take notice that John the Baptist,
Jesus, Barnabas, and Paul all used this same basic method of teaching
and training. We ignore their example at our own risk. Even if we are
not skilled public teachers, we all have people whom we influence --
friends and family -- that we can teach and train by our words and by
our character in our private times with them.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, use my life and my words to prepare others to know
your Son and share your truth. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: God's Comfort Four

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
God's Comfort Four
Comforting Words By: Ron Edmondson
As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem." Isaiah 66:13 NIV

There is nothing quite like seeing a young child comforted by his mother. I was in grocery recently and witnessed a little boy falling. He wasnt hurt that much, but he started to cry. I tried to offer help to him, but he didnt want me. He wanted his mother. When Momma arrived everything was okay. She knew how to comfort her little boy.

Who do you think taught that mother how to comfort? Did she read it in a book? Was she taught in Mommas School? Did she learn it on Oprah? Of course a mothers love is instinctive. It comes naturally. I have watched many of the young mothers in our Sunday School class before their first child. Many times they worry about how they will be as a mother. When it comes to comforting their children, however, Ive yet to find a mother that didnt know how.

That instinct could have only come from the mothe rs designer. God created a mothers love. God designed a mother to comfort her child? Dont you think God, who came up with the idea of a mothers comfort, should know something about comforting?

I dont know where you are struggling in your life right now. If the statistics among the readers of Mustard Seeds holds true, then the chances are very good that if you are reading this, then you are in the middle of a trial right now. You could use comforting. I might remind you that God knows how to comfort; even better than a mother knows how to comfort her hurting child.

Today's Verse : Galatians 3:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 13, 2008

VERSE:
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse
for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a
tree."
-- Galatians 3:13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+3:13

THOUGHT:
Cursed! Not just in the sense that he was mocked and his
detractors cursed at him, but in the sense that he received the
curse of death because of our sin. He did what was hideous and
scandalous; he died on a Cross -- hung to a tree in front of a
jeering mob, executed like sub-human scum. But the beauty of his
shame and disgrace is that God made it our redemption. Jesus'
ridicule and curse bought us freedom from the curse of our own
sins. Praise God! Praise Jesus!

PRAYER:
Almighty Father, I can't even pretend to fathom your ways and
why you would require of yourself such a horrific sacrifice to
redeem me. Precious Savior, I can't imagine what it was like to
hang before a mob carrying the sin of the whole world. All I can do
is ask the Holy Spirit to make my thoughts and words convey the
gratitude of my heart as he intercedes for me now. Thank you!
Praise you! May my life truly honor you! In the mighty name of
Jesus, I praise. Amen.

Today's KJV Verse : Galatians 3:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 13, 2008

VERSE:
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a
curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth
on a tree:
-- Galatians 3:13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+3:13&translation=kjv

THOUGHT:

Amen.
