=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Stop Signs, by Ann Voskamp

I think it was because my window was rolled down a few inches that he
bothered to yell at me.

Otherwise, he might have just left it at that disgusted frown and shake
of his head. But his driver's window was cranked down, too. We both
were looking for the relief of breezes from that sun blazing down. So
when we turned north off the 4th line, down at Knapp's corner, our
dusty van barely paused there at the intersection. He didn't even have
to lean over when he hollered at me. "There's a stop sign there, you
know!"

Color, shame, floods my cheeks. But before I can nod, mumble an
apology, he and his diesel pick-up rumble off. "That wasn't very nice
of him. You had stopped, Mom." Joshua's passenger seat defense tries to
soothe. "Why did that man yell that?" Hope turns back after the truck's
dust cloud, looking for answers.

Flustered, I carefully scan to the west, then east, then west again,
before creeping forward through the intersection. And then manage a
feeble explanation. "He was concerned I wasn't going to brake in time.
That I hadn't seen the stop sign. It scared him. And that's fair."

The wind blows through our open windows, our hair. In the rush of
spring, I wonder if each of us replays his words again, the scene,
reading his anger as fear. But maybe they don't, their young faces
silently watching the meadow slip close to the road with its petticoat
of white trilliums. Maybe it's just me thinking about stop signs nearly
missed.

I'm like that. Always rushing, hardly braking in time, off again. In a
hurry. So much to be done. Or so I think.

What hard stops in my life have I been driving through -- or hardly
pausing for?

How often am I mindfully slowing to intersect my time with God? Early,
throughout, and late. Or do I barely make meaningful time at anytime in
my day to commune in lingering, unhurried ways with God? Some days,
yes. Some days, no. There are too many rolling stops.

So I'll stop and linger long.

The meadow retreats and waving fields of greening wheat lap up along
the roadside. The children, hands pointing and voices sure, debate
whether that farmer is planting corn way off in a field on the horizon,
or if he's drilling in beans. And it's just me thinking about stop
signs nearly missed and slowing to meet with God.

I'm listening to the prophet in a pick-up: There are stop signs here,
you know. So I'll stop and linger long in prayer.

To avoid life crashes.

Lord, if life is crashing ... have I been running stop signs?

Today, it's all speeding by so fast, I simply have to stop and pray.

Morning & Evening -- Genesis 7:16 and 1 John 4:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, June 5, 2008

MORNING:

"The Lord shut him in."
-- Genesis 7:16

Noah was shut in away from all the world by the hand of divine love.
The door of electing purpose interposes between us and the world which
lieth in the wicked one. We are not of the world even as our Lord Jesus
was not of the world. Into the sin, the gaiety, the pursuits of the
multitude we cannot enter; we cannot play in the streets of Vanity Fair
with the children of darkness, for our heavenly Father has shut us in.
Noah was shut in with his God. "Come thou into the ark," was the Lord's
invitation, by which he clearly showed that he himself intended to
dwell in the ark with his servant and his family. Thus all the chosen
dwell in God and God in them. Happy people to be enclosed in the same
circle which contains God in the Trinity of his persons, Father, Son,
and Spirit. Let us never be inattentive to that gracious call, "Come,
my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee,
and hide thyself as it were for a little moment until the indignation
be overpast." Noah was so shut in that no evil could reach him. Floods
did but lift him heavenward, and winds did but waft him on his way.
Outside of the ark all was ruin, but inside all was rest and peace.
Without Christ we perish, but in Christ Jesus there is perfect safety.
Noah was so shut in that he could not even desire to come out, and
those who are in Christ Jesus are in him for ever. They shall go no
more out for ever, for eternal faithfulness has shut them in, and
infernal malice cannot drag them out. The Prince of the house of David
shutteth and no man openeth; and when once in the last days as Master
of the house he shall rise up and shut the door, it will be in vain for
mere professors to knock, and cry Lord, Lord open unto us, for that
same door which shuts in the wise virgins will shut out the foolish for
ever. Lord, shut me in by thy grace.

EVENING:

"He that loveth not knoweth not God."
-- 1 John 4:8

The distinguishing mark of a Christian is his confidence in the love of
Christ, and the yielding of his affections to Christ in return. First,
faith sets her seal upon the man by enabling the soul to say with the
apostle, "Christ loved me and gave himself for me." Then love gives the
countersign, and stamps upon the heart gratitude and love to Jesus in
return. "We love him because he first loved us." In those grand old
ages, which are the heroic period of the Christian religion, this
double mark was clearly to be seen in all believers in Jesus; they were
men who knew the love of Christ, and rested upon it as a man leaneth
upon a staff whose trustiness he has tried. The love which they felt
towards the Lord was not a quiet emotion which they hid within
themselves in the secret chamber of their souls, and which they only
spake of in their private assemblies when they met on the first day of
the week, and sang hymns in honour of Christ Jesus the crucified, but
it was a passion with them of such a vehement and all-consuming energy,
that it was visible in all their actions, spoke in their common talk,
and looked out of their eyes even in their commonest glances. Love to
Jesus was a flame which fed upon the core and heart of their being;
and, therefore, from its own force burned its way into the outer man,
and shone there. Zeal for the glory of King Jesus was the seal and mark
of all genuine Christians. Because of their dependence upon Christ's
love they dared much, and because of their love to Christ they did
much, and it is the same now. The children of God are ruled in their
inmost powers by love-the love of Christ constraineth them; they
rejoice that divine love is set upon them, they feel it shed abroad in
their hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto them, and then by
force of gratitude they love the Saviour with a pure heart, fervently.
My reader, do you love him? Ere you sleep give an honest answer to a
weighty question!

My Utmost For His Highest : "God's Say-So"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 5, 2008

GOD'S SAY-SO

He hath said ... so that we may boldly say ...

Hebrews 8:5-6

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=heb+8:5-6&sr=1

My say-so is to be built on God's say-so. God says - "I will never
leave thee," then I can with good courage say - "The Lord is my
helper, I will not fear - " I will not be haunted by apprehension.
This does not mean that I will not be tempted to fear, but I will
remember God's say-so. I will be full of courage, like a child
"bucking himself up" to reach the standard his father wants. Faith in
many a one falters when the apprehensions come, they forget the
meaning of God's say-so, forget to take a deep breath spiritually.
The only way to get the dread taken out of us is to listen to God's
say-so.

What are you dreading? You are not a coward about it, you are going
to face it, but there is a feeling of dread. When there is nothing
and no one to help you, say - "But the Lord is my Helper, this
second, in my present outlook." Are you learning to say things after
listening to God, or are you saying things and trying to make God's
word fit in? Get hold of the Father's say-so, and then say with good
courage - "I will not fear." It does not matter what evil or wrong
may be in the way, He has said - "I will never leave thee."

Frailty is another thing that gets in between God's say-so and ours.
When we realize how feeble we are in facing difficulties, the
difficulties become like giants, we become like grasshoppers, and God
becomes a nonentity. Remember God's say-so - "I will in no wise fail
you." Have we learned to sing after hearing God's key-note? Are we
always possessed with the courage to say - "The Lord is my helper,"
or are we succumbing?

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Facing Fear 4

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Facing Fear 4
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven." Genesis 28:17 NIV

There is something about fear and faith working together that intrigues me. It seems, at least in my life, that the times of greatest fear are the times God is calling me to display the greatest faith. I wonder (really I know) if God does this so the attention and glory will not be on me, but on Him who can do all things. Somehow, if I was able to easily accomplish what God asked me to do it wouldnt make God seem that special; even that important.

Of course, God is special. His glory created the Heavens and the earth. He really doesnt need me for anything. He chooses to use me simply to display His glory and honor. To do this, He must do through me things I couldnt do apart from Him. So, He calls me to God-sized tasks that require an increase in faith beyond what I have ever experienced. Each new challeng e grows my faith to another level.

What is God calling you to do today that is bigger than you; that in order to accomplish it will require an even greater display of faith than you have ever displayed before? Is it to end a relationship you know is not God-honoring? Is it to begin a new chapter in your career life? Is it to step out in faith into some ministry opportunity? Is it to simply trust Him with your finances, your family or your future?

Once you know God is calling you to something and you become afraid, the question then is what are you going to do about it? Will you reside in fear or surrender by faith to Gods plan for your life?

That choice, my friend, is yours!

Praying with Paul : "Excellence in Giving"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

EXCELLENCE IN GIVING

2 Corinthians 8:1-7

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+8:1-7

Dear Father,

Show your grace to me and my family by giving us hearts so
generous that we will share liberally with those who need our help.

May we give ourselves first to you, and then to our brethren. Help
us to give of our means, even beyond our means, and of our own free
will. May we earnestly desire to relieve the needs of Christians
who are poor and whose lives are burdened.

Help us not only resolve to do good, but to complete the good we
set out to do.

Help us to excel in everything - in faith, in utterance, in
knowledge, in all earnestness, in love of the brethren - but in
this also, that we share our material wealth, a real measure of
your gracious work within us.

In the name of Jesus I humbly ask for your help in giving us a
generous spirit. Amen.

Only Jesus!

Then Peter, James, and John looked, but they saw only Jesus
there alone with them.

-- Mark 9:8 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
If God's message to Jesus' followers in the previous verse about
listening to Jesus as their primary source of God's revelation was
ignored, then the disappearance of Moses and Elijah made God's point
clear. The Father wanted Jesus to be honored, revered, followed, and
obeyed. Jesus is the one to whom they and we must listen!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, open my heart as well as my ears to the message of your Son.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Romans 6:5

June 5, 2008

VERSE:
If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will
certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.
-- Romans 6:5

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+6:5

THOUGHT:
So, here's the great news: if we have died with Christ, we've
already died the only death that really matters. Our lives are
joined with his and so we will share in his glory when he returns
(Colossians 3:1-4). Even death cannot separate us from his presence
in our lives (Romans 8:35-39) because we have been given the
victory over death through Christ Jesus our Lord (1 Corinthians
15:55-57). We do not have to fear the second death (Revelation
2:11; 20:6) because we have already passed over from death into
life (John 5:24).

PRAYER:
Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God —
through Jesus Christ our Lord! Amen. (Romans 7:24-25)
