Today's Verse : 2 Timothy 1:3

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 13, 2007

VERSE:
I [Paul] thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a
clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you
[Timothy] in my prayers.
-- 2 Timothy 1:3

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Timothy+1:3

THOUGHT:
Paul is near the end of his life, facing persecution in a
horrible prison. Many of the young men whom he had mentored have
left the faith or have turned against him. How can he give thanks?
Paul speaks of his confidence in his own victorious future with
Jesus and in his son in the faith, Timothy. What makes this special
is that he communicates it to Timothy. He's not content to just
give thanks to God in prayer! He also tells Timothy in this letter
how precious he is and how the old apostle prays for his son in the
faith, Timothy. When was the last time you sent a note of thanks to
the people you appreciate, letting them know they give you reason
to rejoice before the throne of God?

PRAYER:
Matchless Father of all grace, thank you! Thank you for every
spiritual blessing I have in Christ. Thank you today for the
special people who are such a blessing to me in my walk of faith
.. (take a minute and just say their names before the Father).
Help me grow in my ability to show my appreciation and approval of
these precious people, so that they can know what a blessing they
are to me. In Jesus' name I thank you. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Abraham One

The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you." Genesis 12:1

As we are privileged to read God's Word concerning Abram, he is already a hero of the faith. Notice the verse says "The Lord HAD said". It was past tense, because as it is written, the act has already occurred. God told Abram to go, he obeyed, and we read about it in retrospect.

As we study the man of faith for the next few days, we are reading history. It certainly didn't happen yesterday. The chronicle of his life, and all the others in the Bible, are there to point us to an awesome God. We are to study Abram (Abraham), not so we can be impressed with him, even though we are, but so his God can impress us. Abram left his country not on some whim, but because he had been visited by the Creator. He had met up with the Lovely One whose presence was unlike any Abram had ever met before. Abram could go into unchartered territory, because he had an encounter with the Living God!

From day one in Abram's journey with God we learn that life as Abram has known it will never be the same. Always before Abram had been able to plan his own way. He had been able to make real decisions, which would affect his future. Now, if he were going to follow God, he would go where God told him to go. He would do what God told him to do, and he would trust God to provide for him along the way.

As you and I desire to learn from this history of Abram, we must decide now that we will allow His plan to be our own. We must set about to trust and obey our God, just as Abram decided to do. We must place our faith firmly in the same God Abram chose to follow.

This fabulous piece of our history will remain that, just a good story, unless we personally apply and implement it into our individual lives. This week, that is my personal goal. Will you open your heart to what God wants to do through the story of Abram?

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Respect Your Mother!, by Phil Ware

Note:

This is one of several letters Phil is sending to his grown children,
Zachary and Megan, to help them know about their grandfather, called
Daddy Al. You can find a link at the bottom of the page to take you to
a list of all the other of these letters.

Dear Megan and Zachary,

When all this began two months ago, I wanted to share with you seven
principles your grandfather, Daddy Al, taught me. I know that you never
knew him, but I hope knowing these principles helps you know a little
more about him.

The final principle is very simple and clear: treat your mother -- and
all women, for that matter -- with respect.

If your uncles, Byron and Gordon, and I wanted to get in really deep
trouble with Daddy Al, all we had to do was hint at talking back or
showing disrespect to our mom. Whoa baby, it didn't take many times to
learn this was a real no-no! Of course, he had always taught us this
principle, but sometimes boys need a reminder or two.

Part of the reason for Daddy Al's strong feelings about this is that he
had grown up in an era when women weren't always treated with respect
-- this was especially true if they were not in positions of power or
were single. This concept, of course, was part of the reason for
principle six that we covered last week.

A second reason that Daddy emphasized this important principle is
because it is strongly taught throughout Scripture. God demands, Jesus
re-emphasizes, and the apostle Paul stresses, that children must obey
their parents and honor them (Exodus 20:16; Matthew 15:1-9; Ephesians
6:1). This is important to their spiritual character and to their own
well being.

Another part of this demand to respect your mother has to do with a
sense of family. If you don't respect your mother, you are
disrespecting yourself and your family.

One of the things I have always appreciated in both of you is your
respect for your mom. You were taught this from the time you were
young, in large measure because your Daddy Al insisted that I learn it.
However, if you all don't proactively demand this with your children,
it could be lost to future generations.

I know you guys will carry this principle with you.

Zach, it is crucial that when the Lord gives you children that you
teach this principle to them so they will always respect Mandy. Megan,
it is crucial that when God brings that special man into your life, you
need to be sure that he will respect you and expect your children to
respect you. This is one of those principles that is much harder for a
mom to demand of her children than it is for the dad to demand and
demonstrate to his children.

I know you guys will carry this principle with you the rest of your
lives, but I wanted to remind you just how important this principle was
for your Daddy Al, how important it is to me, and how seriously God
takes it. I pray that you will teach it to your children and to your
grandchildren. If you do, I know our legacy of faith that already spans
multiple generations will live on for years to come.

Love you both for who you are and what God is in you.

Dad

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you were to pass on some values from your mom or dad to your
children or grandchildren, what would they be?

Let's help each other build a legacy list for the future! Share your
ideas on my blog.

Morning & Evening -- 1 Peter 1:7 and Luke 6:12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, November 12, 2007

MORNING:

"The trial of your faith."
-- 1 Peter 1:7

Faith untried may be true faith, but it is sure to be little faith, and
it is likely to remain dwarfish so long as it is without trials. Faith
never prospers so well as when all things are against her: tempests are
her trainers, and lightnings are her illuminators. When a calm reigns
on the sea, spread the sails as you will, the ship moves not to its
harbour; for on a slumbering ocean the keel sleeps too. Let the winds
rush howling forth, and let the waters lift up themselves, then, though
the vessel may rock, and her deck may be washed with waves, and her
mast may creak under the pressure of the full and swelling sail, it is
then that she makes headway towards her desired haven. No flowers wear
so lovely a blue as those which grow at the foot of the frozen glacier;
no stars gleam so brightly as those which glisten in the polar sky; no
water tastes so sweet as that which springs amid the desert sand; and
no faith is so precious as that which lives and triumphs in adversity.
Tried faith brings experience. You could not have believed your own
weakness had you not been compelled to pass through the rivers; and you
would never have known God's strength had you not been supported amid
the water-floods. Faith increases in solidity, assurance, and
intensity, the more it is exercised with tribulation. Faith is
precious, and its trial is precious too.

Let not this, however, discourage those who are young in faith. You
will have trials enough without seeking them: the full portion will be
measured out to you in due season. Meanwhile, if you cannot yet claim
the result of long experience, thank God for what grace you have;
praise him for that degree of holy confidence whereunto you have
attained: walk according to that rule, and you shall yet have more and
more of the blessing of God, till your faith shall remove mountains and
conquer impossibilities.

EVENING:

"And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a
mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God."
-- Luke 6:12

If ever one of woman born might have lived without prayer, it was our
spotless, perfect a Lord, and yet none was ever so much in supplication
as he! Such was his love to his Father, that he loved much to be in
communion with him: such his love for his people, that he desired to be
much in intercession for them. The fact of this eminent prayerfulness
of Jesus is a lesson for us-he hath given us an example that we may
follow in his steps. The time he chose was admirable, it was the hour
of silence, when the crowd would not disturb him; the time of inaction,
when all but himself had ceased to labour; and the season when slumber
made men forget their woes, and cease their applications to him for
relief. While others found rest in sleep, he refreshed himself with
prayer. The place was also well selected. He was alone where none would
intrude, where none could observe: thus was he free from Pharisaic
ostentation and vulgar interruption. Those dark and silent hills were a
fit oratory for the Son of God. Heaven and earth in midnight stillness
heard the groans and sighs of the mysterious Being in whom both worlds
were blended. The continuance of his pleadings is remarkable; the long
watches were not too long; the cold wind did not chill his devotions;
the grim darkness did not darken his faith, or loneliness check his
importunity. We cannot watch with him one hour, but he watched for us
whole nights. The occasion for this prayer is notable; it was after his
enemies had been enraged-prayer was his refuge and solace; it was
before he sent forth the twelve apostles-prayer was the gate of his
enterprise, the herald of his new work. Should we not learn from Jesus
to resort to special prayer when we are under peculiar trial, or
contemplate fresh endeavours for the Master's glory? Lord Jesus, teach
us to pray.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Transfigured Life"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 12, 2007

THE TRANSFIGURED LIFE

If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old
things are passed away; behold, all things are become
new.

2 Corinthians 5:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2co+5:17&sr=1

What idea have you of the salvation of your soul? The experience of
salvation means that in your actual life things are really altered,
you no longer look at things as you used to; your desires are new,
old things have lost their power. One of the touchstones of
experience is - Has God altered the thing that matters? If you still
hanker after the old things, it is absurd to talk about being born
from above, you are juggling with yourself. If you are born again,
the Spirit of God makes the alteration manifest in your actual life
and reasoning, and when the crisis comes you are the most amazed
person on earth at the wonderful difference there is in you. There is
no possibility of imagining that you did it. It is this complete and
amazing alteration that is the evidence that you are a saved soul.

What difference has my salvation and sanctification made? For
instance, can I stand in the light of 1 Corinthians 13, or do I have
to shuffle? The salvation that is worked out in me by the Holy Ghost
emancipates me entirely, and as long as I walk in the light as God is
in the light, He sees nothing to censure because His life is working
out in every particular, not to my consciousness, but deeper than my
consciousness.

Praying with Paul : "Prepared to Fight"

PREPARED TO FIGHT

Ephesians 6:14-17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+6:14-17

Dear Father, my support in battle,

Help me stand, having put on my body the garments of TRUTH and the
bullet-proof vest of the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF JESUS, having put on my
feet the combat boots of PREPARATION IN THE GOOD NEWS OF PEACE, and
besides these, having taken in hand the shield of TRUST IN GOD. (I
feel like I need a gas mask of DISCERNMENT to protect me from the
poison of Satan's propaganda.) Give me the wisdom that comes with
the helmet of SALVATION and the zeal to take up the assault weapon
of the SPIRIT, THE SPOKEN WORD OF GOD.

With all these in place, let me stand my ground . . . and fight!

In the name of Jesus, the forger of our armor, I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Rejected! -- Luke 19:41-44

Rejected!

Jesus came near Jerusalem. He saw the city and began to cry
for it. Jesus spoke to Jerusalem. He said, "I wish you knew
today what would bring you peace! But you can't know it,
because it is hidden from you. A time is coming when your
enemies will build a wall around you. Your enemies will hold
you on all sides. They will destroy you and all your people.
Not one stone of your buildings will stay on top of another.
All this will happen because you did not know the time when
God came to save you."

-- Luke 19:41-44 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
So often, we assume that if an opportunity is presented to us, then we
will have many other chances to respond to the same opportunity.
However, experience eventually teaches most of us what God had tried to
get us to see much earlier: opportunities are offered and then pass by
us never to be offered quite the same way again. Jerusalem stood on the
brink of history. Accepting Jesus as the way to peace offered great
opportunity. Rejecting Jesus as the way of peace led to the destruction
that would follow. Unfortunately this same rejection plays itself out
repeatedly on a much smaller scale in the lives of so many people. They
reject the way of the Lord in their youth, or in a time of rebellion,
and think that he will be there for them to follow whenever and however
they may choose. While they may eventually come to the Lord, they will
waste much time, and they will also forfeit much peace as the
consequences of their rebellion and procrastination bring them
heartache after heartache. In addition, some can have their hearts
become so hardened that they never wish to return to the Lord. Let's
live and act with great urgency in the lives of those we love and ask
God to help us reach them for Jesus so their lives and their eternities
will not be squandered on what is not peace!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, give me wisdom and "urgent patience" to know how best to share
Jesus with those I love who do not know him as their Lord. I do not
want to rush them in ways that close their hearts to him. At the same
time, dear Father, I don't want to be lackadaisical in my approach to
them either. Help me be a peace-bringer as I seek to share the Lord. In
Jesus' name I ask it. Amen.
