=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Real Perseverance, by Mike Barres

When many of us think of perseverance, we think of things like saying
"Praise the Lord anyway!" when we are having a bad day. Some of us
might think about the need to persevere when people make fun of us for
being a Christian. Recently, however, I read an email about "real
perseverance." This email was from Voice of the Martyrs (www.persecution.com).
This is what it said.

A Sudanese Christian boy has his knees and feet nailed to a board
and he is left to die. When rescued he says he forgives the man who
did this because Jesus was also nailed and forgave him. A
Vietnamese pastor is sentenced to two years in prison. When he is
offered an early release, he declines stating that he has a group
of new Believers in the prison he has to disciple. A Colombian
missionary is kidnapped and told she only has two hours to live.
She tells her captors that if she only has two hours to live, she
wants to spend it telling them about Jesus.

When I compare myself to these people, I don't really know much about
perseverance.

In my quiet time recently, I came across a challenging verse:

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me
His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel
according to the power of God (2 Timothy 1:8 NKJV).

Talk about perseverance!

To many of us that sounds almost contradictory. If we are suffering, we
might think that God is not paying attention in our time of need. This
verse, however, describes suffering "according to the power of God."

In a Bible study we are doing at our church, we focused recently upon a
verse Paul sent to the believers in Colossae:

I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh
what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His
body, which is the church (Colossians 1:24).

Talk about perseverance! Paul was able to rejoice in sufferings.

Some of us are already persevering through sufferings. Others of us
need to ask the Lord to help us develop this for the tough times that
may be ahead. All of us should pray for our brothers and sisters who
are persevering through severe trials and persecutions for the Lord.

Morning & Evening -- 1 Corinthians 11:24 and Revelation 16:15

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, April 26, 2008

MORNING:

"This do in remembrance of me."
-- 1 Corinthians 11:24

It seems then, that Christians may forget Christ! There could be no
need for this loving exhortation, if there were not a fearful
supposition that our memories might prove treacherous. Nor is this a
bare supposition: it is, alas! too well confirmed in our experience,
not as a possibility, but as a lamentable fact. It appears almost
impossible that those who have been redeemed by the blood of the dying
Lamb, and loved with an everlasting love by the eternal Son of God,
should forget that gracious Saviour; but, if startling to the ear, it
is, alas! too apparent to the eye to allow us to deny the crime. Forget
him who never forgot us! Forget him who poured his blood forth for our
sins! Forget him who loved us even to the death! Can it be possible?
Yes, it is not only possible, but conscience confesses that it is too
sadly a fault with all of us, that we suffer him to be as a wayfaring
man tarrying but for a night. He whom we should make the abiding tenant
of our memories is but a visitor therein. The cross where one would
think that memory would linger, and unmindfulness would be an unknown
intruder, is desecrated by the feet of forgetfulness. Does not your
conscience say that this is true? Do you not find yourselves forgetful
of Jesus? Some creature steals away your heart, and you are unmindful
of him upon whom your affection ought to be set. Some earthly business
engrosses your attention when you should fix your eye steadily upon the
cross. It is the incessant turmoil of the world, the constant
attraction of earthly things which takes away the soul from Christ.
While memory too well preserves a poisonous weed, it suffereth the rose
of Sharon to wither. Let us charge ourselves to bind a heavenly
forget-me-not about our hearts for Jesus our Beloved, and, whatever
else we let slip, let us hold fast to him.

EVENING:

"Blessed is he that watcheth."
-- Revelation 16:15

"We die daily," said the apostle. This was the life of the early
Christians; they went everywhere with their lives in their hands. We
are not in this day called to pass through the same fearful
persecutions: if we were, the Lord would give us grace to bear the
test; but the tests of Christian life, at the present moment, though
outwardly not so terrible, are yet more likely to overcome us than even
those of the fiery age. We have to bear the sneer of the world-that is
little; its blandishments, its soft words, its oily speeches, its
fawning, its hypocrisy, are far worse. Our danger is lest we grow rich
and become proud, lest we give ourselves up to the fashions of this
present evil world, and lose our faith. Or if wealth be not the trial,
worldly care is quite as mischievous. If we cannot be torn in pieces by
the roaring lion, if we may be hugged to death by the bear, the devil
little cares which it is, so long as he destroys our love to Christ,
and our confidence in him. I fear me that the Christian church is far
more likely to lose her integrity in these soft and silken days than in
those rougher times. We must be awake now, for we traverse the
enchanted ground, and are most likely to fall asleep to our own
undoing, unless our faith in Jesus be a reality, and our love to Jesus
a vehement flame. Many in these days of easy profession are likely to
prove tares, and not wheat; hypocrites with fair masks on their faces,
but not the true-born children of the living God. Christian, do not
think that these are times in which you can dispense with watchfulness
or with holy ardour; you need these things more than ever, and may God
the eternal Spirit display his omnipotence in you, that you may be able
to say, in all these softer things, as well as in the rougher, "We are
more than conquerors through him that loved us."

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Supreme Climb"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 26, 2008

THE SUPREME CLIMB

Take now thy son . . and offer him there for a
burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will
tell thee of.

Genesis 22:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ge+22:2&sr=1

Character determines how a man interprets God's will (cf. Psalm
18:25-26). Abraham interpreted God's command to mean that he had to
kill his son, and he could only leave this tradition behind by the
pain of a tremendous ordeal. God could purify his faith in no other
way. If we obey what God says according to our sincere belief, God
will break us from those traditions that misrepresent Him. There are
many such beliefs to be got rid of, e.g., that God removes a child
because the mother loves him too much - a devil's lie! and a travesty
of the true nature of God. If the devil can hinder us from taking the
supreme climb and getting rid of wrong traditions about God, he will
do so; but if we keep true to God, God will take us through an ordeal
which will bring us out into a better knowledge of Himself.

The great point of Abraham's faith in God was that he was prepared to
do anything for God. He was there to obey God, no matter to what
belief he went contrary. Abraham was not a devotee of his
convictions, or he would have slain Isaac and said that the voice of
the angel was the voice of the devil. That is the attitude of a
fanatic. If you will remain true to God, God will lead you straight
through every barrier into the inner chamber of the knowledge of
Himself; but there is always this point of giving up convictions and
traditional beliefs. Don't ask God to test you. Never declare as
Peter did - "I will do anything, I will go to death with Thee."
Abraham did not make any such declaration, he remained true to God,
and God purified his faith.

Praying with Paul : "The Qualities of Love"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

THE QUALITIES OF LOVE

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+13:4-7

Dear Father, give me love!

May I one day possess fully all the qualities of love, as did your
son, Jesus, the Messiah!

May I be patient and kind, not jealous or boastful, not arrogant
or rude, not insisting on my own way, not ever irritable or
resentful.

May I rejoice always in what is right, never in anything that is
wrong.

Help me to bear all things and endure whatever I must, to trust in
all circumstances, and to be hopeful in all trials.

By Jesus's authority I come to you, asking. Amen.

WJD! -- Spiritually Unclean! -- Mark 7:6-8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Spiritually Unclean!

Jesus answered, "You are all hypocrites. Isaiah was right
when he spoke about you. Isaiah wrote, 'These people say they
honor me, but they don't really make me an important part of
their lives. Their worship of me is for nothing. The things
they teach are only rules that people have made.' You have
stopped following the commands of God. Now you follow the
rules you got from other people."

-- Mark 7:6-8 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
We try to be nice in today's politically correct environment. However,
some truth -- God's truth -- is just simply the real truth. When people
fake their religious devotion or when they bend God's Word to justify
the way they want to live, then it is hypocrisy no matter who they are.
Jesus hates hypocrisy. Jesus will not let folks sink into hypocrisy and
pretend with them that they are righteous. So what do we do with these
harsh words from Jesus? First, we need to ask ourselves if we are
guilty of the sin Jesus condemns! After all, in one way of viewing
things, aren't we the religious ones today? If we are guilty, then
let's change and put our lives where our mouths are! Second, we need to
not be so bashful with each other when hypocrisy creeps into our lives.
We need to lovingly and humbly help each other identify and correct any
hypocrisy. Hypocrisy destroys our hearts and ruins the influence of
Jesus' people on the world!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, always righteous and yet boundlessly merciful, please forgive
me. I confess that I have sometimes sinned because I'm weak and have
stumbled. However, there have been times when I've been criticizing
others for their sin, yet allowed myself to do what I know was not
right. Correct me gently and humble me tenderly so I can serve you
without hypocrisy. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Ephesians 4:26-27

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 26, 2008

VERSE:
"In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you
are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.
-- Ephesians 4:26-27

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+4:26-27

THOUGHT:
Pent up anger is an explosion waiting to happen. Sooner or
later, the pent up frustration will explode, either in our own life
or into the life of someone else. Jesus taught us to forgive and to
reconcile (Matthew 18). Anger must be dealt with. Otherwise the
devil will use it to abuse us as well as others in our lives. Don't
give him a foothold in your life. If you give him an inch (2.54
cm), he'll take a mile (1.61 km)!

PRAYER:
Father in heaven, thank you for the ability to get angry at the
things that anger you. Please help me channel that emotion in ways
that are productive and help me to be repulsed at evil. Please stir
my heart to reconciliation, especially when that anger is against
one of your children. By the power of your Holy Spirit, help me to
forgive as you have forgiven me. In the name of Jesus, my Lord, I
pray. Amen.

Today's KJV Verse : Ephesians 4:26-27

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 26, 2008

VERSE:
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your
wrath: Neither give place to the devil.
-- Ephesians 4:26-27

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+4:26-27&translation=kjv

In the name of Jesus, my Lord, I
pray. Amen.
