THOUGHT:
No matter the temporary apparent benefits of wicked schemes and
evil power, all these efforts end at the grave. They are swept
away, leaving the wicked with nothing to show for their efforts and
no Savior to plead their case as they stand before the
righteousness and justice of the one true and holy God.

PRAYER:
Dear Father, please help me resist the temptation to idolize or
exalt those who succeed through evil devices, schemes, methods or
plans. Help my heart seek your Kingdom and righteousness. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.

Preparing for Heroism, by Rubel Shelly

A great many people seem to crave celebrity. If a child's answer to
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" was doctor, missionary, or
teacher half a century ago, lately it has been pro athlete, rock star,
or simply "famous." Because it is so hard to master even athletic or
musical giftedness, more and more are settling for famous -- and
compete to do bizarre things just to be on TV. Witness shows such as
Fear Factor, Survivor, Biggest Loser, and other "reality" series.

Last week we saw the emergence of a new hero in the public eye. Capt.
Chesley B. Sullenberger III, a veteran US Airways pilot, handled what
most aviation experts say is one of the most severe jeopardies a
commercial jet can face. The common assumption has been that ditching a
plane in water would inevitably result in catastrophe and yield
multiple fatalities.

Sully, as his friends call him, lifted off his Airbus A320 from
LaGuardia Airport in New York. As the jetliner left the ground, both
its engines were disabled after apparently hitting a flock of geese.
About to crash over a major metropolitan area, Capt. Sullenberger
guided a violently shaking plane away from skyscrapers and heavy
population, kept it from hitting the George Washington Bridge, and
glided to an amazing water landing on the Hudson River.

All 155 passengers and the plane's crew survived the ordeal. Without
the loss of a single life, what most had thought impossible happened.
And everyone from president to governor to TV news anchors hailed Sully
a hero.

Capt. Sullenberger did what he had trained to do for his entire career
as a pilot. He studied the manuals and spent time in simulators. In
fact, he helped write some of the manuals on safety procedures. He is a
licensed glider pilot. Hoping never to be in such a situation, he had
prepared for it diligently.

"True heroism is ... the urge to serve others whatever the cost."

Sully did his part and trusted everyone else to do theirs. The flight
crew, air traffic controllers, passengers, Coast Guard, NYC police,
private tugs working on the Hudson River -- all had roles to play to
pull off this feat.

There is no seminar to attend for becoming a hero. It isn't a status
achieved by setting out to be one. It is the role for which you prepare
every day of life by honoring your duties, being diligent with
preparation, learning to function as a team player, and behaving
unselfishly. "True heroism is not the urge to surpass all others at
whatever cost," said the late Arthur Ashe, "but the urge to serve
others at whatever cost."

That's the person you want flying your plane -- and the one you want to
be.

MORNING:

"And of his fulness have all we received."
-- John 1:16

These words tell us that there is a fulness in Christ. There is a
fulness of essential Deity, for "in him dwelleth all the fulness of the
Godhead." There is a fulness of perfect manhood, for in him, bodily,
that Godhead was revealed. There is a fulness of atoning efficacy in
his blood, for "the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanseth us from
all sin." There is a fulness of justifying righteousness in his life,
for "there is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ
Jesus." There is a fulness of divine prevalence in his plea, for "He is
able to save to the uttermost them that come unto God by him; seeing he
ever liveth to make intercession for them." There is a fulness of
victory in his death, for through death he destroyed him that had the
power of death, that is the devil. There is a fulness of efficacy in
his resurrection from the dead, for by it "we are begotten again unto a
lively hope." There is a fulness of triumph in his ascension, for "when
he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and received gifts
for men." There is a fulness of blessings of every sort and shape; a
fulness of grace to pardon, of grace to regenerate, of grace to
sanctify, of grace to preserve, and of grace to perfect. There is a
fulness at all times; a fulness of comfort in affliction; a fulness of
guidance in prosperity. A fulness of every divine attribute, of wisdom,
of power, of love; a fulness which it were impossible to survey, much
less to explore. "It pleased the Father that in him should all fulness
dwell." Oh, what a fulness must this be of which all receive! Fulness,
indeed, must there be when the stream is always flowing, and yet the
well springs up as free, as rich, as full as ever. Come, believer, and
get all thy need supplied; ask largely, and thou shalt receive largely,
for this "fulness" is inexhaustible, and is treasured up where all the
needy may reach it, even in Jesus, Immanuel-God with us.

EVENING:

"But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her
heart."

There was an exercise, on the part of this blessed woman, of three
powers of her being: her memory-she kept all these things; her
affections-she kept them in her heart; her intellect-she pondered them;
so that memory, affection, and understanding, were all exercised about
the things which she had heard. Beloved, remember what you have heard
of your Lord Jesus, and what he has done for you; make your heart the
golden pot of manna to preserve the memorial of the heavenly bread
whereon you have fed in days gone by. Let your memory treasure up
everything about Christ which you have either felt, or known, or
believed, and then let your fond affections hold him fast for evermore.
Love the person of your Lord! Bring forth the alabaster box of your
heart, even though it be broken, and let all the precious ointment of
your affection come streaming on his pierced feet. Let your intellect
be exercised concerning the Lord Jesus. Meditate upon what you read:
stop not at the surface; dive into the depths. Be not as the swallow
which toucheth the brook with her wing, but as the fish which
penetrates the lowest wave. Abide with your Lord: let him not be to you
as a wayfaring man, that tarrieth for a night, but constrain him,
saying, "Abide with us, for the day is far spent." Hold him, and do not
let him go. The word "ponder," means to weigh. Make ready the balances
of judgment. Oh, but where are the scales that can weigh the Lord
Christ? "He taketh up the isles as a very little thing:"-who shall take
him up? "He weigheth the mountains in scales"-in what scales shall we
weigh him? Be it so, if your understanding cannot comprehend, let your
affections apprehend; and if your spirit cannot compass the Lord Jesus
in the grasp of understanding, let it embrace him in the arms of
affection.

LOOK AGAIN AND THINK

Take no thought for your life.

Matthew 6:25

A warning which needs to be reiterated is that the cares of this
world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust of other things
entering in, will choke all that God puts in. We are never free from
the recurring tides of this encroachment. If it does not come on the
line of clothes and food, it will come on the line of money or lack
of money; of friends or lack of friends; or on the line of difficult
circumstances. It is one steady encroachment all the time, and unless
we allow the Spirit of God to raise up the standard against it, these
things will come in like a flood.

"Take no thought for your life." "Be careful about one thing only,"
says our Lord - "your relationship to Me." Common sense shouts loud
and says - "That is absurd, I must consider how I am going to live, I
must consider what I am going to eat and drink." Jesus says you must
not. Beware of allowing the thought that this statement is made by
One Who does not understand our particular circumstances. Jesus
Christ knows our circumstances better than we do, and He says we must
not think about these things so as to make them the one concern of
our life. Whenever there is competition, be sure that you put your
relationship to God first.

"Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." How much evil has
begun to threaten you to-day? What kind of mean little imps have been
looking in and saying - Now what are you going to do next month -
this summer? "Be anxious for nothing," Jesus says. Look again and
think. Keep your mind on the "much more" of your heavenly Father.

iniquity, so now I yield them to you for righteousness and
sanctification.

Thank you for setting me free from sin and making me your slave,
your rich slave, because the return I get is sanctification and its
result, eternal life.

Thank you for your free gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus, my
Lord.

In the name of Jesus I thank you for your wonderful grace and all
your gifts. Amen.

I Won't Play Your Game

Then the devil led Jesus to the holy city (Jerusalem). The
devil put Jesus on a very high place on the temple. The devil
said, "If you are the Son of God, jump off. Why? Because it
is written {in the Scriptures}, 'God will command his angels
for you, and their hands will catch you, so that you will not
hit your foot on a rock.'" Jesus answered him, "It also says
{in the Scriptures}, 'You must not test (doubt) the Lord your
God.'"

KEY THOUGHT:
Is Jesus really sure God is with him? Is he truly Immanuel, "God with
us"? One sure place to know and to show this was the Temple. Throughout
the Old Testament, the Tabernacle and later the Temple represented
God's presence and protection for his people. Once again, Satan tempts
Jesus like he tempted the Israelites -- to make God's protection and
care the condition on which loyalty was to be established. Jesus would
not play Satan's game! Jesus was committed to honor his Father and to
be faithful to him even if it meant the path of suffering and death.
The reason these early temptations of Jesus are so important is that
they reveal that Jesus will not chose ANY shortcut to obedience!
Whether Satan realizes it or not, when Jesus walks out of the desert
victorious over him and his temptations, Jesus has demonstrated that
Satan's doom is assured. Jesus will choose God's plan even if it means
suffering, death, and personal ridicule on a cross. What is the cost of
my following God? Will I choose faithfulness over ... ?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty Deliverer and Faithful God, in light of your centuries of
faithfulness to your people, your preservation of them in the face of
great calamity and struggle, I recognize my inconsistency and weakness.
Give me a heart to recognize the long-term consequences of my decisions
about Satan's "small" challenges. Please empower me to choose
faithfulness. I believe you are my Rock and my Salvation, so I rest my
hope in you. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
