=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Repair Men Love Me, by Steve Ridgell

It's true. Repair men love me, at least the ones who charge by the
hour. Any one hour repair job can become a four hour job at my house.
The reason is always the same: before I call the repair experts, I fix
it myself. So the one hour job is now complicated by the two hours of
work to undo my repair.

By now you may think I am an idiot. My wife would sometimes agree. Why
waste so much time and effort on what is obviously a doomed attempt to
fix something myself. I really have no expertise to apply to most of my
do it yourself efforts. The manufacturer obviously has specifications
and procedures for their product. You would think my track record would
even discourage me from future efforts.

So why do I keep attempting to repair appliances, cars, and house
problems? Am I too proud, too stubborn, or too ignorant? Maybe I just
like the idea of being in control. I know it will not turn out well,
but I do it anyway. It will be time consuming, expensive, frustrating,
and stressful.

Maybe this is a metaphor for life. Why are we so compelled to try to
fix things in our life by ourselves? Most of us have a track record
that proves we do not do well when we are in charge. So many things are
out of our control anyway. Yet we persist in believing we can fix even
our broken relationships. We do it as mates, parents, and friends.

There is someone who can repair broken lives. God made us and he knows
how we work best. He even gave us a repair manual that explains our
relationship with him. He knows what he is doing. I have seen the
results in my life and in others. And I have seen the results of our
efforts to fix things. If I had just realized this earlier, I would
have saved a lot of heartache and not wasted so much time.

God can repair the most important relationship of all … our
relationship with him.

Why do I insist on trying to fix things myself?

If you want to know how to let him repair your broken relationship,
write me at steve@hopeforlife.org.

Morning & Evening -- Numbers 14:2 and Psalms 139:17

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

MORNING:

"And all the children of Israel murmured."
-- Numbers 14:2

There are murmurers amongst Christians now, as there were in the camp
of Israel of old. There are those who, when the rod falls, cry out
against the afflictive dispensation. They ask, "Why am I thus
afflicted? What have I done to be chastened in this manner?" A word
with thee, O murmurer! Why shouldst thou murmur against the
dispensations of thy heavenly Father? Can he treat thee more hardly
than thou deservest? Consider what a rebel thou wast once, but he has
pardoned thee! Surely, if he in his wisdom sees fit now to chasten
thee, thou shouldst not complain. After all, art thou smitten as hardly
as thy sins deserve? Consider the corruption which is in thy breast,
and then wilt thou wonder that there needs so much of the rod to fetch
it out? Weigh thyself, and discern how much dross is mingled with thy
gold; and dost thou think the fire too hot to purge away so much dross
as thou hast? Does not that proud rebellious spirit of thine prove that
thy heart is not thoroughly sanctified? Are not those murmuring words
contrary to the holy submissive nature of God's children? Is not the
correction needed? But if thou wilt murmur against the chastening, take
heed, for it will go hard with murmurers. God always chastises his
children twice, if they do not bear the first stroke patiently. But
know one thing-"He doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children
of men." All his corrections are sent in love, to purify thee, and to
draw thee nearer to himself. Surely it must help thee to bear the
chastening with resignation if thou art able to recognize thy Father's
hand. For "whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son
whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as
with sons." "Murmur not as some of them also murmured and were
destroyed of the destroyer."

EVENING:

"How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God."
-- Psalms 139:17

Divine omniscience affords no comfort to the ungodly mind, but to the
child of God it overflows with consolation. God is always thinking upon
us, never turns aside his mind from us, has us always before his eyes;
and this is precisely as we would have it, for it would be dreadful to
exist for a moment beyond the observation of our heavenly Father. His
thoughts are always tender, loving, wise, prudent, far-reaching, and
they bring to us countless benefits: hence it is a choice delight to
remember them. The Lord always did think upon his people: hence their
election and the covenant of grace by which their salvation is secured;
he always will think upon them: hence their final perseverance by which
they shall be brought safely to their final rest. In all our wanderings
the watchful glance of the Eternal Watcher is evermore fixed upon us-we
never roam beyond the Shepherd's eye. In our sorrows he observes us
incessantly, and not a pang escapes him; in our toils he marks all our
weariness, and writes in his book all the struggles of his faithful
ones. These thoughts of the Lord encompass us in all our paths, and
penetrate the innermost region of our being. Not a nerve or tissue,
valve or vessel, of our bodily organization is uncared for; all the
littles of our little world are thought upon by the great God.

Dear reader, is this precious to you? then hold to it. Never be led
astray by those philosophic fools who preach up an impersonal God, and
talk of self-existent, self-governing matter. The Lord liveth and
thinketh upon us, this is a truth far too precious for us to be lightly
robbed of it. The notice of a nobleman is valued so highly that he who
has it counts his fortune made; but what is it to be thought of by the
King of kings! If the Lord thinketh upon us, all is well, and we may
rejoice evermore.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Spontaneity Of Love"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 30, 2008

THE SPONTANEITY OF LOVE

Love suffereth long, and is kind ...

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1co+13:4-8&sr=1

Love is not premeditated, it is spontaneous, i.e., it bursts up in
extraordinary ways. There is nothing of mathematical certainty in
Paul's category of love. We cannot say - "Now I am going to think no
evil; I am going to believe all things." The characteristic of love
is spontaneity. We do not set the statements of Jesus in front of us
as a standard; but when His Spirit is having His way with us, we live
according to His standard with out knowing it, and on looking back we
are amazed at the disinterestedness of a particular emotion, which is
the evidence that the spontaneity of real love was there. In
everything to do with the life of God in us, its nature is only
discerned when it is past.

The springs of love are in God, not in us. It is absurd to look for
the love of God in our hearts naturally, it is only there when it has
been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

If we try to prove to God how much we love Him, it is a sure sign
that we do not love Him. The evidence of our love for Him is the
absolute spontaneity of our love, it comes naturally. In looking back
we cannot tell why we did certain things, we did them according to
the spontaneous nature of His love in us. The life of God manifests
itself in this spontaneous way because the springs of love are in the
Holy Ghost. (Romans 5:5.)

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Early the Next Morning

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Early the Next Morning
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. Genesis 22:3 NIV

As I study this passage of Scripture, where Abraham was called upon by God to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, I get a sense that Abraham had spent a long night in preparation for his trip to the mountains. He got up early the next morning. Have you ever had one of those nights where the stress of life keeps you from sleeping well, so that when morning comes you are the first to rise? I suspect it was much this way with Abraham.

I have always had a mental image of Abraham being so full of faith, and, according to God's Word he was. I also suspect, however, that Abraham was a man, just like me. He was capable of fears, and uncertainties, and struggles of life. He knew a restless night or two. I'm quite sure, as I read the full acco unt of his life, that he had difficulty at times discerning God's direction. I suspect, being called to sacrifice his only son, was one of those trying times. I can't help but wonder if the reason he got up so early was that he had trouble sleeping the night before they left. I know I would have had.

I also notice that he chopped his own wood. This passage certainly could mean that he had his servants chop the wood, but I suspect Abraham did this job himself. Perhaps his mind was so burdened that the time chopping gave him separation from his troubles. Do you suppose Abraham worked up a good sweat and it was somewhat therapeutic? With every chop he may have poured out his heart to God. Sometimes hard work will get our minds off of our troubles.

I guess the reason I want you to think about this human side of Abraham today, is not to lower your opinion of Abraham. No, to the contrary, I hope to build up your opinion of him. This man of faith, the father of the Is raelite nation was a man. He was not a super human. He just served a super God. He learned to place his faith not in his own abilities, but in the abilities of his God. I also suspect that is why God used him in such a mighty way!

When you see Abraham in this way you can see that you and I have the same potential for greatness within the Kingdom of God as did Abraham! Praise God that He uses ordinary men for extra-ordinary tasks. People like Abraham....and you....and me!

ALL THINGS IN ORDER

1 Corinthians 14:26-33

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+14:26-33

Dear Father, God of intelligibility and peace,

When we come together and each of us has something to contribute,
may everything be done to build up the body. Let us do things one
by one, or by pairs or triplets at most, so that all may learn and
be encouraged.

For you, our God, are not like the pagan gods, a god of confusion
and hysteria, but are a god of peace. Let us honor you by doing
things decently and in order.

Submitting to your commands of peace and order, I ask this in
Jesus' name. Amen.

From Within: The Heart Inside

And Jesus said, "The things that come from a person are the
things that make that person wrong.

-- Mark 7:20 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Wow! What a powerful message in today's world where we deliberately
expose ourselves to so many forms of hurtful images and thoughts. Jesus
stressed the importance of being pure -- not just in our actions, but
especially in our hearts and minds! Let's hear clearly Jesus' demand
that we be righteous body, soul, and spirit!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy Father, my loving God, please forgive me of secret sin. Especially
forgive and strengthen me so that I can throw off any influence that
would pull me away from you and the holiness that you long to share
with me. Help me keep my thoughts pure. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Ephesians 4:30-31

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 30, 2008

VERSE:
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were
sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage
and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
-- Ephesians 4:30-31

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+4:30-31

THOUGHT:
Don't make God's Spirit sad! But how do we do that? By harboring
bitterness, unleashing anger driven rage, fighting with others and
slandering their name while plotting to harm them. These things are
the exact opposite of the qualities the Spirit is seeking to
produce in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23). No wonder it makes him
sad!

PRAYER:
Almighty Father, please make me more like Jesus by the power of
your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

A Tact Attack, by Rubel Shelly

My wife tells me I'm seriously deficient in the tact department. I tend
to be direct, clear, and forthright. (Those are my terms.) She thinks I
am inclined to err on the side of being a bit abrupt and blunt. (At
least, she fears that my candid manner can be perceived in those
negative ways.)

Even so, I don't think I'm quite as bad as one fellow I heard about.
When Fred went to Europe, he left his beloved dog with his brother Ed.
Three days into his trip, Fred called back to check on things.

"So how is my dog?" he asked.

"He's dead!" replied Ed. No nonsense. Straight to the point.

"What?" screamed Fred. "You can't just hit somebody with news like
that! You have to ease your way into it. Lay some groundwork for it.
Use some tact."

"Explain what you mean," said his brother.

"Maybe you could have said something about Old Fido being up on the
roof. You reassure me you have it under control and that everything is
going to be fine. When I call the next day, maybe you could say he
jumped off and broke his leg, but the vet said he would make a complete
recovery. He's just going to have to spend a few days at the clinic,"
he explained. Are you following me?"

"Sure," said Ed. "I'm not stupid, you know!"

"Okay," Fred continued. "When I call back the next day, you could say
there were complications and that my dog had died. That way it wouldn't
be such a blow. That way you could have gotten me ready for bad news.
Understand?"

"Yes, I've got it," he told him. "I'll try to do better from now on."

Care enough to speak the truth.

"Good," said Fred. "I'm glad that's settled. So how's Aunt Helen?"

"Well," Ed began hesitantly, "she's out on the roof right now."

Some news is hard to receive or to communicate. Some facts are simply
unpleasant. And all of us need a couple of friends who care enough
about us to be really and truly honest with us – and to hold us
accountable. Like Fred, though, all of us would appreciate a modicum of
tact and gentleness thrown in.

If you're struggling today with unpleasant or painful truth that needs
to be shared, you are not doing anyone a favor by avoiding the task.
But think before you speak. Don't use a cover such as "brutal honesty"
to mask what everyone else will see as "honest brutality." No swatting
the fly on a friend's forehead with a meat cleaver! Think and pray
before you speak. Then speak with gentleness.

Solomon had it right: "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an
enemy multiplies kisses" (Proverbs 27:6 NIV). Nobody benefits from
false flattery. Being a "yes man" (or woman) to a person who needs
accountability and loving criticism is a sophistry that will come back
to haunt you.

Be kind and have the right motive. But care enough to speak the truth.

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you
may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And
over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together
in perfect unity (Colossians 3:12-14 TNIV).

Morning & Evening -- Jeremiah 17:17 and Psalms 149:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

MORNING:

"Thou art my hope in the day of evil."
-- Jeremiah 17:17

The path of the Christian is not always bright with sunshine; he has
his seasons of darkness and of storm. True, it is written in God's
Word, "Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace;"
and it is a great truth, that religion is calculated to give a man
happiness below as well as bliss above; but experience tells us that if
the course of the just be "As the shining light that shineth more and
more unto the perfect day," yet sometimes that light is eclipsed. At
certain periods clouds cover the believer's sun, and he walks in
darkness and sees no light. There are many who have rejoiced in the
presence of God for a season; they have basked in the sunshine in the
earlier stages of their Christian career; they have walked along the
"green pastures" by the side of the "still waters," but suddenly they
find the glorious sky is clouded; instead of the Land of Goshen they
have to tread the sandy desert; in the place of sweet waters, they find
troubled streams, bitter to their taste, and they say, "Surely, if I
were a child of God, this would not happen." Oh! say not so, thou who
art walking in darkness. The best of God's saints must drink the
wormwood; the dearest of his children must bear the cross. No Christian
has enjoyed perpetual prosperity; no believer can always keep his harp
from the willows. Perhaps the Lord allotted you at first a smooth and
unclouded path, because you were weak and timid. He tempered the wind
to the shorn lamb, but now that you are stronger in the spiritual life,
you must enter upon the riper and rougher experience of God's
full-grown children. We need winds and tempests to exercise our faith,
to tear off the rotten bough of self-dependence, and to root us more
firmly in Christ. The day of evil reveals to us the value of our
glorious hope.

EVENING:

"The Lord taketh pleasure in his people."
-- Psalms 149:4

How comprehensive is the love of Jesus! There is no part of his
people's interests which he does not consider, and there is nothing
which concerns their welfare which is not important to him. Not merely
does he think of you, believer, as an immortal being, but as a mortal
being too. Do not deny it or doubt it: "The very hairs of your head are
all numbered." "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he
delighteth in his way." It were a sad thing for us if this mantle of
love did not cover all our concerns, for what mischief might be wrought
to us in that part of our business which did not come under our
gracious Lord's inspection! Believer, rest assured that the heart of
Jesus cares about your meaner affairs. The breadth of his tender love
is such that you may resort to him in all matters; for in all your
afflictions he is afflicted, and like as a father pitieth his children,
so doth he pity you. The meanest interests of all his saints are all
borne upon the broad bosom of the Son of God. Oh, what a heart is his,
that doth not merely comprehend the persons of his people, but
comprehends also the diverse and innumerable concerns of all those
persons! Dost thou think, O Christian, that thou canst measure the love
of Christ? Think of what his love has brought thee-justification,
adoption, sanctification, eternal life! The riches of his goodness are
unsearchable; thou shalt never be able to tell them out or even
conceive them. Oh, the breadth of the love of Christ! Shall such a love
as this have half our hearts? Shall it have a cold love in return?
Shall Jesus' marvellous lovingkindness and tender care meet with but
faint response and tardy acknowledgment? O my soul, tune thy harp to a
glad song of thanksgiving! Go to thy rest rejoicing, for thou art no
desolate wanderer, but a beloved child, watched over, cared for,
supplied, and defended by thy Lord.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Graciousness Of Uncertainty"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 29, 2008

THE GRACIOUSNESS OF UNCERTAINTY

It doth not yet appear what we shall be.

1 John 3:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1jo+3:2&sr=1

Naturally, we are inclined to be so mathematical and calculating that
we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing. We imagine that we have to
reach some end, but that is not the nature of spiritual life. The
nature of spiritual life is that we are certain in our uncertainty,
consequently we do not make our nests anywhere. Common sense says -
"Well, supposing I were in that condition . . ." We cannot suppose
ourselves in any condition we have never been in. Certainty is the
mark of the common-sense life: gracious uncertainty is the mark of
the spiritual life. To be certain of God means that we are uncertain
in all our ways, we do not know what a day may bring forth. This is
generally said with a sigh of sadness, it should be rather an
expression of breathless expectation. We are uncertain of the next
step, but we are certain of God. Immediately we abandon to God, and
do the duty that lies nearest, He packs our life with surprises all
the time. When we become advocates of a creed, something dies; we do
not believe God, we only believe our belief about Him. Jesus said,
"Except ye become as little children." Spiritual life is the life of
a child. We are not uncertain of God, but uncertain of what He is
going to do next. If we are only certain in our beliefs, we get
dignified and severe and have the ban of finality about our views;
but when we are rightly related to God, life is full of spontaneous,
joyful uncertainty and expectancy.

"Believe also in Me," said Jesus, not - "Believe certain things about
Me." Leave the whole thing to Him, it is gloriously uncertain how He
will come in, but He will come. Remain loyal to Him.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Ascribing Worth

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Ascribing Worth
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." Genesis 22:5 NIV

God tested Abraham. He was called to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. He had finished his three plus day journey to the mountain, and now he tells his servants to stay behind, because he and Isaac were going to worship.

(Please let me say in advance that I am not trying to be funny or irreverent here.)

I suppose that Abraham and Isaac went up to the mountain, said a couple of prayers, sang three songs and the doxology, took up an offering, listened to a sermon, gave an invitation, and then went home. After all, he said he was going to worship! Isn't that what we call worship?

As I read today's verse, I understand more than ever that worship is not a single event that we can do in an hour. Oh, that is a part of worship, an important part. But, worship is so much more. Abraham was going to the mountain to worship, because he was going to be obedient to his God. He was giving his God first place in his life. That is real worship.

Worship, in its truest sense, is ascribing worth. We do that not only by what we do, but also by who we are. We worship by offering ourselves completely to our God. We worship when we put him ahead of everything else in our life.

God is looking for that kind of worship from you and me today!

Praying with Paul : "Speaking Truth"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

SPEAKING TRUTH

1 Corinthians 14:13-25

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+14:13-25

Dear Father, God of intelligibility and peace,

Let our praying, singing, and preaching be aimed at informing the
minds and spirits of others, that they may be built up and respond,
"Amen."

Give us the attitude of Paul, who said, "I would rather speak five
words with my mind, in order to instruct others, than ten thousand
words in a tongue."

Let us be babies when it comes to evil, but not in our thinking.
In our thinking, may we be mature, and may we speak your message in
such a way that those who hear will be called to account, will have
the secrets of the heart disclosed, will fall on their faces to
worship you, and will declare that you are really among us.

Submitting to your commands of peace and order, I ask this in
Jesus' name. Amen.

WJD! -- Food Won't Defile -- Mark 7:17-19

Food Won't Defile

Then Jesus left the people and went into the house. The
followers asked Jesus about this story. Jesus said, "You
still have trouble understanding? Surely you know that
nothing that enters a person from the outside can make him
wrong. Food does not go into a person's mind. Food goes into
the stomach. Then that food goes out of the body." (When
Jesus said this, he meant that there is no food that is wrong
for people to eat.)

-- Mark 7:17-19 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Once again, Jesus wants his closest followers to know that the issues
of genuine faith focus on our heart-driven actions and not on the
cosmetic ones. Luke and Mark add the powerful commentary about making
all food clean -- a truth that took some time to sink in among Jesus'
early followers. The declaration is radical, not just because he
declared all food clean, but because he wanted us to look at our hearts
instead of having a perfunctory religious check off list of good deeds
that never demanded anything of our hearts.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, please make my deeds helpful and genuine and my heart pure. I
want to love you, and I want to love others, in deeds and truth as well
as in words and speech. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Deuteronomy 4:29

\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 29, 2008

VERSE:
But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him
if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.
-- Deuteronomy 4:29

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Deuteronomy+4:29

THOUGHT:
When was the last time you truly searched after God? I'm not
talking about an obscure theological insight about God or another
best selling book about God. When was the last time you sought
after the Father so that you could know him better and appreciate
him more? Let's open our hearts and go on the Great Quest to find
God. Like the prodigal son in Luke 15, we will find he's waiting
and watching for us to come home!

PRAYER:
Precious Heavenly Father, majestic in glory, awesome in might,
and ever near with your loving presence, please bless me with a
deeper and more personal knowledge and experience of you in my
life. Until the day I can see you face to face in heaven, please
draw me closer and closer to you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
