=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Restored to Sanity, by Rubel Shelly

There is an old hymn that begins with this stanza:

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways!
Reclothe us in our rightful mind;
In purer lives thy service find,
In deeper reverence praise.

The process called "redemption" or "salvation" in Holy Scripture is
about this very thing. We humans are messed up in the way we think. We
need God to remake our rational processes. Salvation is not fire
insurance for people worried about dying. It is healthy thinking for
people who want to live meaningfully.

There are so many conflicting and discordant sounds in our ears. Many
of them rationalize the stupidest things you can imagine.

* Taking what isn't yours.

* Having an affair.

* Spending irresponsibly.

* Spreading gossip.

* Sneaking a quick look at porn.

* Self-medication with street drugs.

* Justifying a foul temper.

Reflect the image of our God into the world.

* Slacking off at your job.

You can finish the list, can't you?

Lectures and scoldings won't break those negative patterns. Guilt and
self-hatred practically guarantee they will continue. Choices become
compulsions, compulsions become addictions, and addictions wind up
killing you.

Alcoholism is a paradigm illustration of how the process works. A
woman's choice becomes a compulsion and soon turns into an addiction.
That's why Alcoholics Anonymous speaks so freely of and urges
participants to pray about "sanity." It's the same thing biblical
language calls being set free, being renewed in our minds, or putting
off the old person.

At the start of any given day, it is not a bad idea to pray for a fresh
touch of God's grace to keep you sane for what lies ahead. Pray not to
live in the past, lick old wounds, or nurse grudges. Those things will
drive you crazy! Pray instead for the ability to focus on what is
positive, honorable, and upright. These things bring you peace! And ask
God to let you be authentically and truly human.

To be "authentically and truly human" is to be what God created you to
be. Reflect the image of our God into the world. Think sane thoughts
about your own worth and dignity. Treat others as you would like to be
treated. Be true to your commitments. Give your best to every task. And
spread some joy in your world.

Here is the way the apostle Paul said it long ago:

Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God
transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then
you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and
pleasing and perfect (Romans 12:2 NLT).

Morning & Evening -- 1 John 2:6 and Isaiah 41:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, May 17, 2008

MORNING:

"So to walk even as he walked."
-- 1 John 2:6

Why should Christians imitate Christ? They should do it for their own
sakes. If they desire to be in a healthy state of soul-if they would
escape the sickness of sin, and enjoy the vigour of growing grace, let
Jesus be their model. For their own happiness' sake, if they would
drink wine on the lees, well refined; if they would enjoy holy and
happy communion with Jesus; if they would be lifted up above the cares
and troubles of this world, let them walk even as he walked. There is
nothing which can so assist you to walk towards heaven with good speed,
as wearing the image of Jesus on your heart to rule all its motions. It
is when, by the power of the Holy Spirit, you are enabled to walk with
Jesus in his very footsteps, that you are most happy, and most known to
be the sons of God. Peter afar off is both unsafe and uneasy. Next, for
religion's sake, strive to be like Jesus. Ah! poor religion, thou hast
been sorely shot at by cruel foes, but thou hast not been wounded
one-half so dangerously by thy foes as by thy friends. Who made those
wounds in the fair hand of Godliness? The professor who used the dagger
of hypocrisy. The man who with pretences, enters the fold, being nought
but a wolf in sheep's clothing, worries the flock more than the lion
outside. There is no weapon half so deadly as a Judas-kiss.
Inconsistent professors injure the gospel more than the sneering critic
or the infidel. But, especially for Christ's own sake, imitate his
example. Christian, lovest thou thy Saviour? Is his name precious to
thee? Is his cause dear to thee? Wouldst thou see the kingdoms of the
world become his? Is it thy desire that he should be glorified? Art
thou longing that souls should be won to him? If so, imitate Jesus; be
an "epistle of Christ, known and read of all men."

EVENING:

"Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee."
-- Isaiah 41:9

If we have received the grace of God in our hearts, its practical
effect has been to make us God's servants. We may be unfaithful
servants, we certainly are unprofitable ones, but yet, blessed be his
name, we are his servants, wearing his livery, feeding at his table,
and obeying his commands. We were once the servants of sin, but he who
made us free has now taken us into his family and taught us obedience
to his will. We do not serve our Master perfectly, but we would if we
could. As we hear God's voice saying unto us, "Thou art my servant," we
can answer with David, "I am thy servant; thou hast loosed my bonds."
But the Lord calls us not only his servants, but his chosen ones-"I
have chosen thee." We have not chosen him first, but he hath chosen us.
If we be God's servants, we were not always so; to sovereign grace the
change must be ascribed. The eye of sovereignty singled us out, and the
voice of unchanging grace declared, "I have loved thee with an
everlasting love." Long ere time began or space was created God had
written upon his heart the names of his elect people, had predestinated
them to be conformed unto the image of his Son, and ordained them heirs
of all the fulness of his love, his grace, and his glory. What comfort
is here! Has the Lord loved us so long, and will he yet cast us away?
He knew how stiffnecked we should be, he understood that our hearts
were evil, and yet he made the choice. Ah! our Saviour is no fickle
lover. He doth not feel enchanted for awhile with some gleams of beauty
from his church's eye, and then afterwards cast her off because of her
unfaithfulness. Nay, he married her in old eternity; and it is written
of Jehovah, "He hateth putting away." The eternal choice is a bond upon
our gratitude and upon his faithfulness which neither can disown.

My Utmost For His Highest : "His Ascension And Our Union"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 17, 2008

HIS ASCENSION AND OUR UNION

And it came to pass, while He blessed them, He was
parted from them, and carried up into heaven."

Luke 24:51

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+24:51&sr=1

We have no corresponding experience to the events in Our Lord's life
after the Transfiguration. From then onwards Our Lord's life' was
altogether vicarious. Up to the time of the Transfiguration He had
exhibited the normal perfect life of a man; from the Transfiguration
onwards - Gethsemane, the Cross, the Resurrection - everything is
unfamiliar to us. His Cross is the door by which every member of the
human race can enter into the life of God; by His Resurrection He has
the right to give eternal life to any man, and by His Ascension Our
Lord enters heaven and keeps the door open for humanity.

On the Mount of Ascension the Transfiguration is completed. If Jesus
had gone to heaven from the Mount of Transfiguration, He would have
gone alone; He would have been nothing more to us than a glorious
Figure. But He turned His back on the glory, and came down from the
Mount to identify Himself with fallen humanity.

The Ascension is the consummation of the Transfiguration. Our Lord
does now go back into His primal glory; but He does not go back
simply as Son of God; He goes back to God as Son of Man as well as
Son of God. There is now freedom of access for anyone straight to the
very throne of God by the Ascension of the Son of Man. As Son of Man
Jesus Christ deliberately limited omnipotence, omnipresence and
omniscience in Himself. Now they are His in absolute full power. As
Son of Man Jesus Christ has all power at the throne of God. He is
King of kings and Lord of lords from the day of His Ascension until
now.

Praying with Paul : "Christ, Our Yes"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

CHRIST, OUR YES

2 Corinthians 1:12-20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+1:12-20

Amen! Yes! Abba, Dear Father,

Let me find pride in this - that my conscience testifies that I
live my life in this world with holiness and godly sincerity, not
by earthly wisdom but by your graciousness.

Help me not to vacillate as I make my plans. Don't let me be like
those who are worldly, ready to say "Yes" and "No" at the same
time, talking out of both sides of their mouth.

As surely as you, God, are faithful, let me act in good faith
toward others. For your Son, Jesus Christ, in whom I believe by the
preaching of the Good News, was not Yes and No, but was Yes! For
all your promises find your Yes through him. So through him we
utter the Yes, the Amen, at the close of our prayers - to your
glory.

In the name of Jesus I ask this and utter my Yes! my Amen!
according to his will. Yes! Amen!

Open Your Eyes!

The followers had only one loaf of bread with them in the
boat. They forgot to bring more bread. Jesus warned them, "Be
careful! Guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the
yeast of Herod." The followers discussed the meaning of this.
They said, "He said this because we have no bread." Jesus
knew that the followers were talking about this. So Jesus
asked them, "Why are you talking about having no bread? You
still don't see or understand? Are you not able to
understand? Do you have eyes that can't see? Do you have ears
that can't hear? Remember what I did before, when we did not
have enough bread?"

-- Mark 8:14-18 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Worry is a sign we've forgotten the great blessings and providence of
God in our past. That is why the praise we offer to God for what he has
done for us is so important. Praise is a time when we rehearse and
remember the great things God has done and remember the great God he
has been in the past and has promised to be in our future. It helps us
acknowledge that God is and was and will be the great provider and
Shepherd for his sheep.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O LORD God, you are my Great Shepherd. I recognize that every good
thing I have comes from you. Forgive me for the times in the past when
I have doubted your active providence in my life and worried about your
sustaining grace for the future. I know that you can bless, support and
sustain. Thank you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : 2 Corinthians 5:17

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 17, 2008

VERSE:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old
has gone, the new has come!
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+5:17

THOUGHT:
"New and Improved!" That should be stamped across the forehead
of every Christian! When we come to Christ, he makes us new and he
cleanses us of all our sins. Incredibly, this grace can be "new
every morning" because of God's faithfulness and transforming
power. God's grace and power are given to us through his Holy
Spirit. We are new and improved, and will continue to be that way
until we are completely transformed to be like Jesus! (See 2
Corinthians 3:18)

PRAYER:
Holy Father, have your way with my heart, my will, my life, and
my time. I want to yield myself to you so that you can make me new
and improved. I don't want to be satisfied with where you have
brought me. No, dear Father, I want to become more like Jesus
today, and each day of my life that follows. Thank you for your
empowering grace. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

VERSE:
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+5:17&translation=kjv

Amen.
