Today's Verse : Matthew 3:1-2

March 2, 2008

VERSE:
In those days John the Baptist came ... saying, "Repent, for the
kingdom of heaven is near."
-- Matthew 3:1-2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Matthew+3:1-2

THOUGHT:
These words sound strange in a world that is afraid to tell the
truth about sin, wickedness, and evil. Yet every lost person
desperately needs to repent -- to change his or her heart and life,
seek after God, and live for Jesus as Lord. Yes, salvation is given
to us by God's incredible grace. On the other hand, grace that
leaves us unchanged is not true grace. Grace not only forgives us
through Jesus' sacrificial death on the Cross, but it also
liberates us from the empty and destructive life without God and
his guidance.

PRAYER:
Forgive me, dear Heavenly Father, for my sin. I want to turn my
heart to you and live my life according to your will and for your
glory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Love Letters, by Steve Higginbotham

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have
put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I
entrust my life (Psalm 143:8 TNIV).

Not long ago, my wife and I were cleaning out one of our closets. On
the top shelf, in the back of the closet was an unmarked box. So I
pulled it down and was surprised to see that inside of it were all the
"love letters" that I wrote to her while we were dating.

Well, I had forgotten what I had written, so I pulled out a few to
read. Oh my! Talk about corny and embarrassing! Someday my children
will get a kick out of reading Daddy's love letters to Mama.

How well do you cherish God's love for you?

But as I took a break to read some of these letters to my wife, I found
that she remembered them. They weren't strange words to her. While I
had no memory of these letters, and was busy analyzing handwriting
samples to make sure I indeed wrote them, my wife needed no such
analysis. She knew the letters were from me, and she remembered the
very words I had written.

The fact that she remembered my letters so well indicates that those
letters were cherished by her.

Now here's my point: How well do you cherish God's love for you? You do
know that he has written several "love letters" to you, don't you? Have
you forgotten their content? Have you even taken the time to open and
read what He had to say to you? I might go so far as to suggest that
the way we cherish -- or fail to cherish -- His words is an indicator
of the depth of our love for Him. Give it some thought.

Morning & Evening -- Song of Solomon 4:16 and 1 Peter 2:7

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, March 1, 2008

MORNING:

"Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my
garden, that the spices thereof may flow out."
-- Song of Solomon 4:16

Anything is better than the dead calm of indifference. Our souls may
wisely desire the north wind of trouble if that alone can be sanctified
to the drawing forth of the perfume of our graces. So long as it cannot
be said, "The Lord was not in the wind," we will not shrink from the
most wintry blast that ever blew upon plants of grace. Did not the
spouse in this verse humbly submit herself to the reproofs of her
Beloved; only entreating him to send forth his grace in some form, and
making no stipulation as to the peculiar manner in which it should
come? Did she not, like ourselves, become so utterly weary of deadness
and unholy calm that she sighed for any visitation which would brace
her to action? Yet she desires the warm south wind of comfort, too, the
smiles of divine love, the joy of the Redeemer's presence; these are
often mightily effectual to arouse our sluggish life. She desires
either one or the other, or both; so that she may but be able to
delight her Beloved with the spices of her garden. She cannot endure to
be unprofitable, nor can we. How cheering a thought that Jesus can find
comfort in our poor feeble graces. Can it be? It seems far too good to
be true. Well may we court trial or even death itself if we shall
thereby be aided to make glad Immanuel's heart. O that our heart were
crushed to atoms if only by such bruising our sweet Lord Jesus could be
glorified. Graces unexercised are as sweet perfumes slumbering in the
cups of the flowers: the wisdom of the great Husbandman overrules
diverse and opposite causes to produce the one desired result, and
makes both affliction and consolation draw forth the grateful odours of
faith, love, patience, hope, resignation, joy, and the other fair
flowers of the garden. May we know by sweet experience, what this
means.

EVENING:

"He is precious."
-- 1 Peter 2:7

As all the rivers run into the sea, so all delights centre in our
Beloved. The glances of his eyes outshine the sun: the beauties of his
face are fairer than the choicest flowers: no fragrance is like the
breath of his mouth. Gems of the mine, and pearls from the sea, are
worthless things when measured by his preciousness. Peter tells us that
Jesus is precious, but he did not and could not tell us how precious,
nor could any of us compute the value of God's unspeakable gift. Words
cannot set forth the preciousness of the Lord Jesus to his people, nor
fully tell how essential he is to their satisfaction and happiness.
Believer, have you not found in the midst of plenty a sore famine if
your Lord has been absent? The sun was shining, but Christ had hidden
himself, and all the world was black to you; or it was night, and since
the bright and morning star was gone, no other star could yield you so
much as a ray of light. What a howling wilderness is this world without
our Lord! If once he hideth himself from us, withered are the flowers
of our garden; our pleasant fruits decay; the birds suspend their
songs, and a tempest overturns our hopes. All earth's candles cannot
make daylight if the Sun of Righteousness be eclipsed. He is the soul
of our soul, the light of our light, the life of our life. Dear reader,
what wouldst thou do in the world without him, when thou wakest up and
lookest forward to the day's battle? What wouldst thou do at night,
when thou comest home jaded and weary, if there were no door of
fellowship between thee and Christ? Blessed be his name, he will not
suffer us to try our lot without him, for Jesus never forsakes his own.
Yet, let the thought of what life would be without him enhance his
preciousness.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Undeviating Question"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 1, 2008

THE UNDEVIATING QUESTION

Lovest thou Me?

John 21:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+21:17&sr=1

Peter declares nothing now (cf. Matthew 26:33-35). Natural
individuality professes and declares; the love of the personality is
only discovered by the hurt of the question of Jesus Christ. Peter
loved Jesus in the way in which any natural man loves a good man.
That is temperamental love; it may go deep into the individuality,
but it does not touch the centre of the person. True love never
professes anything. Jesus said - "Whosoever shall confess Me before
men," i.e., confess his love not merely by his words, but by
everything he does.

Unless we get hurt right out of every deception about ourselves, the
word of God is not having its way with us. The word of God hurts as
no sin can ever hurt, because sin blunts feeling. The question of the
Lord intensifies feeling, until to be hurt by Jesus is the most
exquisite hurt conceivable. It hurts not only in the natural way but
in the profound personal way. The word of the Lord pierces even to
the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, there is no deception left.
There is no possibility of being sentimental with the Lord's
question; you cannot say nice things when the Lord speaks directly to
you, the hurt is too terrific. It is such a hurt that it stings every
other concern out of account. There never can be any mistake about
the hurt of the Lord's word when it comes to His child; but the point
of the hurt is the great point of revelation.

Praying with Paul : "Pursuing Peace"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

PURSUING PEACE

Romans 14:17-23

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+14:17-23

Dear Father, giver of brotherly love,

How wonderful that your kingdom, your rule in people's lives, is
not a matter of food and drink, but of righteousness and peace and
joy in the Holy Spirit. May I, in serving Christ this way, be
acceptable to you and approved by others.

Let me and all the members of your family pursue what makes for
peace and for mutual uplifting. Let none of us, for the sake of
personal rights, destroy your work of grace in someone else. Help
us to appreciate our rights, but help each of us understand that it
is wrong to make others fall by insisting on them. Guide us to see
that it is right not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that
would make a brother or sister stumble.

The faith that I have, let me keep between you and me. Let me find
happiness in having no reason to judge myself for what I approve.
May I never do anything from the basis of doubt, because not acting
from conviction is sin.

In the name of Jesus I pray all this, asking that you will give me
love for my brothers and sisters. Amen.

Gospel Farmers

The farmer is like a person that plants God's teaching in
people.

-- Mark 4:14 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus explains his parable of the soils. One key component is the
farmer in the story. The farmer is the person who shares God's message,
the good news of God, with others. The question we need to ask is this:
are we farmers?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, help me be more effective as a farmer in your Kingdom. Help me
see opportunities to sow your good news about Jesus. In his name I
pray. Amen.
