Today's Verse : Psalm 69:17-18

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 12, 2007

VERSE:
Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for
I am in trouble. Come near and rescue me; redeem me because of my
foes.
-- Psalm 69:17-18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+69:17-18

THOUGHT:
Jesus came to show God's face and rescue us from our enemies.
But today, in difficult parts of the world and in the places many
would least expect it, Christians are under attack. God sent Jesus
to save us ultimately and totally from sin and its power. Let's
pray that our mighty God will work mightily in our world today to
deliver his children from the clutches of tyranny, poverty,
violence, abuse, and ridicule. Let's also pray that God is praised
for doing so!

PRAYER:
Holy and righteous Father, please strengthen all your beloved
children who find themselves under attack. Make your deliverance
for them known and shown in the display of your mighty power. You
are our Redeemer and Savior. In the name of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Who Me? 2

But David said to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my family or my father's clan in Israel, that I should become the king's son-in-law?" 1 Samuel 18:18 NIV

David, just like we saw in Moses yesterday, was amazed that God would call him to a position of leadership. We see in David, just as we did in the life of Moses, how God would use the experiences David had on the shepherd's field to help him in his role as a warrior and king. Even more than that, however, we see in David a heart that desired to please God, and that in itself appears to be the greatest reason God had for choosing David.

God always uses life experiences for good. We see that played out throughout Scripture. Romans 8:28 says "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." We know that is true, but further examination of David's life reveals there was more going on than just the experiences of David's life. David's heart was God's primary motivation. Consider 1 Samuel 16:7, "But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

So, God is using life experiences, and He is examining hearts, to find those who would do His will, surrender their lives in service to Him, and seek to give Him ultimate glory. WHO AM I? Perhaps you are one like Moses, and like David, desiring in your heart to allow God to work through you?

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Compassion at Christmas, by Teresa Bell Kindred

Her name is Reina and she is 8 years old. She has long dark hair and
big brown eyes. She lives in the mountainous region of Guatemala with
her mother and grandmother. Her mother sells tortillas in an effort to
support them.

I have never met Reina but we have corresponded with each other, with
the help of a translator, since I became her sponsor four years ago
through an organization called Compassion International.

In her letters, Reina tells me about her chickens and asks me to pray
for her mother and her grandmother. She draws me pictures of her house
and colors the sky blue with a yellow sun. I keep her letters and
hand-drawn pictures in a special place and honor her request for
prayer, and I always include Reina in those prayers as well.

If Reina beats the odds and finishes high school, she will probably not
attend college. Only 2 percent of Guatemalans attend universities, and
only half of those graduate. One of the highest paying jobs in her
country is that of a factory worker, where she can earn about $126 per
month.

I learned about Compassion International on Heartlight's Web site and
decided to check it out. I saw Reina's picture on the page of children
waiting to be sponsored. I took one look at her little solemn face and
fell in love. Within minutes, I was signed up as her sponsor.

There are thousands of children waiting for someone like you!

For less than what it costs to fill up my gas tank, Reina receives
medical care, food, encouragement, and support from a school sponsored
by Compassion International.

The dictionary defines the word compassion as "a feeling of deep
sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune,
accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering."

There are thousands of children waiting for someone like you to help
alleviate their suffering. "Somewhere children dance to the joyous
music of life and elsewhere they only cling to existence. They are all
ours," says Laurie Kohl. Why not make a child dance this holiday season
through a sponsorship?

Merry Christmas from the Kindred house to yours!

Morning & Evening -- 1 Thessalonians 5:24 and Colossians 3:24

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

MORNING:

"Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it."
-- 1 Thessalonians 5:24

Heaven is a place where we shall never sin; where we shall cease our
constant watch against an indefatigable enemy, because there will be no
tempter to ensnare our feet. There the wicked cease from troubling, and
the weary are at rest. Heaven is the "undefiled inheritance"; it is the
land of perfect holiness, and therefore of complete security. But do
not the saints even on earth sometimes taste the joys of blissful
security? The doctrine of God's word is, that all who are in union with
the Lamb are safe; that all the righteous shall hold on their way; that
those who have committed their souls to the keeping of Christ shall
find him a faithful and immutable preserver. Sustained by such a
doctrine we can enjoy security even on earth; not that high and
glorious security which renders us free from every slip, but that holy
security which arises from the sure promise of Jesus that none who
believe in him shall ever perish, but shall be with him where he is.
Believer, let us often reflect with joy on the doctrine of the
perseverance of the saints, and honour the faithfulness of our God by a
holy confidence in him.

May our God bring home to you a sense of your safety in Christ Jesus!
May he assure you that your name is graven on his hand; and whisper in
your ear the promise, "Fear not, I am with thee." Look upon him, the
great Surety of the covenant, as faithful and true, and, therefore,
bound and engaged to present you, the weakest of the family, with all
the chosen race, before the throne of God; and in such a sweet
contemplation you will drink the juice of the spiced wine of the Lord's
pomegranate, and taste the dainty fruits of Paradise. You will have an
antepast of the enjoyments which ravish the souls of the perfect saints
above, if you can believe with unstaggering faith that "faithful is he
that calleth you, who also will do it."

EVENING:

"Ye serve the Lord Christ."
-- Colossians 3:24

To what choice order of officials was this word spoken? To kings who
proudly boast a right divine? Ah, no! too often do they serve
themselves or Satan, and forget the God whose sufferance permits them
to wear their mimic majesty for their little hour. Speaks then the
apostle to those so-called "right reverend fathers in God," the
bishops, or "the venerable the archdeacons"? No, indeed, Paul knew
nothing of these mere inventions of man. Not even to pastors and
teachers, or to the wealthy and esteemed among believers, was this word
spoken, but to servants, aye, and to slaves. Among the toiling
multitudes, the journeymen, the day labourers, the domestic servants,
the drudges of the kitchen, the apostle found, as we find still, some
of the Lord's chosen, and to them he says, "Whatsoever ye do, do it
heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye
shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord
Christ." This saying ennobles the weary routine of earthly employments,
and sheds a halo around the most humble occupations. To wash feet may
be servile, but to wash his feet is royal work. To unloose the
shoe-latchet is poor employ, but to unloose the great Master's shoe is
a princely privilege. The shop, the barn, the scullery, and the smithy
become temples when men and women do all to the glory of God! Then
"divine service" is not a thing of a few hours and a few places, but
all life becomes holiness unto the Lord, and every place and thing, as
consecrated as the tabernacle and its golden candlestick.

"Teach me, my God and King, in all things thee to see;
And what I do in anything to do it as to thee.
All may of thee partake, nothing can be so mean,
Which with this tincture, for thy sake, will not grow bright and clean.
A servant with this clause makes drudgery divine;
Who sweeps a room, as for thy laws, makes that and the action fine."

My Utmost For His Highest : "Individuality"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 11, 2007

INDIVIDUALITY

If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself.

Matthew 16:24

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+16:24&sr=1

Individuality is the husk of the personal life. Individuality is all
elbows, it separates and isolates. It is the characteristic of the
child and rightly so; but if we mistake individuality for the
personal life, we will remain isolated. The shell of individuality is
God's created natural covering for the protection of the personal
life; but individuality must go in order that the personal life may
come out and be brought into fellowship with God. Individuality
counterfeits personality as lust counterfeits love. God designed
human nature for Himself; individuality debases human nature for
itself.

The characteristics of individuality are independence and
self-assertiveness. It is the continual assertion of individuality
that hinders our spiritual life more than anything else. If you say -
"I cannot believe," it is because individuality is in the road;
individuality never can believe. Personality cannot help believing.
Watch yourself when the Spirit of God is at work. He pushes you to
the margins of your individuality, and you have either to say - "I
shan't," or to surrender, to break the husk of individuality and let
the personal life emerge. The Holy Spirit narrows it down every time
to one thing (cf. Matthew 5:23-24). The thing in you that will not be
reconciled to your brother is your individuality. God wants to bring
you into union with Himself, but unless you are willing to give up
your right to yourself He cannot. "Let him deny himself" - deny his
independent right to himself, then the real life has a chance to
grow.

to reconcile us to yourself through his body of flesh offered in
death on the cross.

You wanted me to be holy and blameless and without reproach, so
you made it possible! Thank you, Father.

In the name of your holy Son. Amen.

Betrayal

While Jesus was speaking, a group of people came. One of the
twelve apostles was leading the group. He was Judas. Judas
came close to Jesus so that he could kiss Jesus. But Jesus
said to him, "Judas, are you using the kiss {of friendship}
to give the Son of Man {to his enemies}?"

-- Luke 22:47-48 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The phrase that hurts me most for Jesus in this verse is "one of his
twelve disciples." Jesus is betrayed by "one of his own." Not only
that, he was betrayed by an act of loving greeting. Everything about
this event is hurtful and horrifying. How can someone with whom you've
shared your most intimate moments and deepest truths give you up to
those who hate you? Unfortunately, it happens all too frequently.
However, when we go through such trials, we can be assured that Jesus
knows our pain and lovingly draws alongside us to comfort us. He has
been there. He has suffered excruciating pain all set up by the
betrayal of one of his closest friends. So in our hurt, let us draw
near to him and know that he is there to help us make it through our
hours of deepest darkness and despair.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, thank you for being so close and personal. Thank you for not
being far off and detached. Thank you for experiencing our earthly pain
when Jesus was one of us. I now draw near to receive your grace and
help in my time of need. In the name of Jesus, my faithful friend,
Lord, and Savior I pray. Amen.
