=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

A Step in the Right Direction?, by Rubel Shelly

Some of the things we do in the name of justice don't make a lot of
sense. I was marginally involved several years ago in a case that
serves to illustrate my point. A man who had fraudulently used a credit
card for several hundred dollars was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days
in jail.

The reason behind his use of the credit card made it impossible for him
to make amends or make a deal. (He was flat broke.) His wife and two
children became the responsibility of others. (She was pregnant with
their third child.) And the year in jail both made the marriage harder
to hold together and did nothing to repay the fellow whose card he had
misused. (I don't know if the poor guy ever got his money back or his
credit score cleaned up.)

Why don't we do more things like the Hebrew justice system required? A
man who stole a neighbor's sheep, for example, didn't go to jail for a
year. He had to restore four sheep for every one he took. If he took an
ox, it was a five-for-one restitution that was required. Get the
picture? The community didn't house and feed him in jail for a year.
The thief worked, sacrificed, and lived with the community's awareness
of his sin. Stiff punishment and victim compensation. (For a quick
glance at this subject, check out http://www.SearchGodsWord.org and
search on restitution.)

This concept of making restitution is what makes me appreciate the
thing Adrian and Tiffany McKinnon did a few months back. They had been
gone from their home near Montgomery, Alabama, for a week. When they
got back, the surprise awaiting them was that a burglar had looted the
place.

They entered their home, Mrs. McKinnon saw a practically empty house,
and she burst into tears. Not only were her possessions gone but her
new house had been ransacked. "Tears just rolled down my face," she
said, "as I walked in and saw everything gone and piles of trash all
over my house."

He made the crook clean up the house.

Mr. McKinnon dashed through the house to investigate – and caught the
thief red-handed. He had apparently freelanced the operation and done
it solo. He was making one more trip to the house to pick up a few
remaining items of value and walked into the homeowner – wearing Mr.
McKinnon's hat, no less!

Adrian McKinnon took charge. He held the thief at gunpoint, while
Tiffany called the police. Then he decided there was no need for him
and his wife to have to undo all the chaos the 33-year-old bungling
burglar had wreaked. So he forced him to pick up trash, put broken and
discarded items back in place, and clean up the house he had wrecked in
their absence.

When the police arrived, the thief had the gall to complain about being
forced to clean up the mess he had made. The policeman laughed and told
him that somebody else might have shot him dead. The whining stopped.

Maybe the McKinnon's could make a lecture tour to law schools across
the country to explain the basics of restitution. I think they're onto
something.

Morning & Evening -- Joshua 2:21 and Genesis 32:12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, April 18, 2008

MORNING:

"She bound the scarlet line in the window."
-- Joshua 2:21

Rahab depended for her preservation upon the promise of the spies, whom
she looked upon as the representatives of the God of Israel. Her faith
was simple and firm, but it was very obedient. To tie the scarlet line
in the window was a very trivial act in itself, but she dared not run
the risk of omitting it. Come, my soul, is there not here a lesson for
thee? Hast thou been attentive to all thy Lord's will, even though some
of his commands should seem non-essential? Hast thou observed in his
own way the two ordinances of believers' baptism and the Lord's Supper?
These neglected, argue much unloving disobedience in thy heart. Be
henceforth in all things blameless, even to the tying of a thread, if
that be matter of command.

This act of Rahab sets forth a yet more solemn lesson. Have I
implicitly trusted in the precious blood of Jesus? Have I tied the
scarlet cord, as with a Gordian knot in my window, so that my trust can
never be removed? Or can I look out towards the Dead Sea of my sins, or
the Jerusalem of my hopes, without seeing the blood, and seeing all
things in connection with its blessed power? The passer-by can see a
cord of so conspicuous a colour, if it hangs from the window: it will
be well for me if my life makes the efficacy of the atonement
conspicuous to all onlookers. What is there to be ashamed of? Let men
or devils gaze if they will, the blood is my boast and my song. My
soul, there is One who will see that scarlet line, even when from
weakness of faith thou canst not see it thyself; Jehovah, the Avenger,
will see it and pass over thee. Jericho's walls fell flat: Rahab's
house was on the wall, and yet it stood unmoved; my nature is built
into the wall of humanity, and yet when destruction smites the race, I
shall be secure. My soul, tie the scarlet thread in the window afresh,
and rest in peace.

EVENING:

"And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good."
-- Genesis 32:12

When Jacob was on the other side of the brook Jabbok, and Esau was
coming with armed men, he earnestly sought God's protection, and as a
master reason he pleaded, "And thou saidst, I will surely do thee
good." Oh, the force of that plea! He was holding God to his word-"Thou
saidst." The attribute of God's faithfulness is a splendid horn of the
altar to lay hold upon; but the promise, which has in it the attribute
and something more, is a yet mightier holdfast-"Thou saidst, I will
surely do thee good." And has he said, and shall he not do it? "Let God
be true, and every man a liar." Shall not he be true? Shall he not keep
his word? Shall not every word that cometh out of his lips stand fast
and be fulfilled? Solomon, at the opening of the temple, used this same
mighty plea. He pleaded with God to remember the word which he had
spoken to his father David, and to bless that place. When a man gives a
promissory note, his honour is engaged; he signs his hand, and he must
discharge it when the due time comes, or else he loses credit. It shall
never be said that God dishonours his bills. The credit of the Most
High never was impeached, and never shall be. He is punctual to the
moment: he never is before his time, but he never is behind it. Search
God's word through, and compare it with the experience of God's people,
and you shall find the two tally from the first to the last. Many a
hoary patriarch has said with Joshua, "Not one thing hath failed of all
the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you; all are
come to pass." If you have a divine promise, you need not plead it with
an "if," you may urge it with certainty. The Lord meant to fulfil the
promise, or he would not have given it. God does not give his words
merely to quiet us, and to keep us hopeful for awhile with the
intention of putting us off at last; but when he speaks, it is because
he means to do as he has said.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Readiness"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 18, 2008

READINESS

God called unto him and he said, Here am I

Exodus 3:4

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ex+3:4&sr=1

When God speaks, many of us are like men in a fog, we give no answer.
Moses' reply revealed that he was somewhere. Readiness means a right
relationship to God and a knowledge of where we are at present. We
are so busy telling God where we would like to go. The man or woman
who is ready for God and His work is the one who carries off the
prize when the summons comes. We wait with the idea of some great
opportunity, something sensational, and when it comes we are quick to
cry - "Here am I." Whenever Jesus Christ is in the ascendant, we are
there, but we are not ready for an obscure duty.

Readiness for God means that we are ready to do the tiniest little
thing or the great big thing, it makes no difference. We have no
choice in what we want to do, whatever God's programme may be we are
there, ready. When any duty presents itself we hear God's voice as
Our Lord heard His Father's voice, and we are ready for it with all
the alertness of our love for Him. Jesus Christ expects to do with us
as His Father did with Him. He can put us where He likes, in pleasant
duties or in mean duties, because the union is that of the Father and
Himself. "That they may be one, even as We are one."

Be ready for the sudden surprise visits of God. A ready person never
needs to get ready. Think of the time we waste trying to get ready
when God has called! The burning bush is a symbol of everything that
surrounds the ready soul, it is ablaze with the presence of God.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Deny Five

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Deny Five
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
"What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it. Acts 4:16 NIV

I have a man in my church people still cant believe is there. He serves. He gives. His life has changed beyond anything I could have dreamed of, but still, I almost would have to show a picture to people for them to believe he is in church. (Thankfully thats the story of many in our church plant!)

You know what! I dont care anymore what others say about him. I dont care the stories they know of his past. I dont care who he used to be. I know who he is today and there is no denying the person God is shaping him to be.

Have you had a hard time convincing people you have changed? Quit telling them and let them see the change. Its impossible to deny a miracle when its right in front of you! Show your miracle life-change! Live a new life in front of them and let God handl e your reputation.

Praying with Paul : "Balance"

BALANCE

1 Corinthians 11:2-16

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+11:2-16

Dear Father, God of the present and the future, but also of the
past,

Make me willing to consider and accept new things. But also help
me to respect and maintain the traditions from the past. May I
acknowledge that Christ is my head and submit myself to him, even
as he acknowledges you as his head.

May Christian wives acknowledge the headship of their own
husbands, and may their husbands honor Christ as their head. Help
husbands and wives live inter-dependently, realizing that they need
each other for mutual support and procreation. May all the women in
your holy church conduct themselves in a way that shows their
devotion to your Word and to their own husbands, and may all
husbands give their wives due honor and genuine love.

Help each of us who follows Christ not to be contentious or
self-willed. Let us adapt ourselves to the traditions of the past
that promote good order.

In the name of Jesus I submit to your authority, asking these
things according to his will. Amen.

WJD! -- Limited Resources? -- Mark 6:37-38

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, April 18, 2008

Limited Resources?

But Jesus answered, "You give them some food to eat." The
followers said to Jesus, "We can't buy enough bread to feed
all these people! We would all have to work a month to earn
enough money to buy that much bread!" Jesus asked the
followers, "How many loaves of bread do you have now? Go and
see." The followers counted their loaves of bread. They came
to Jesus and said, "We have five loaves of bread and two
fish."

-- Mark 6:37-38 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
In the previous verses, Jesus' disciples expressed their concern for
the crowds following Jesus. Now Jesus challenges them to do the
impossible: "You feed them!" At first, they don't get the impossibility
of his command. They are still locked into their normal ways of
handling need. So Jesus tells them to check their available resources
-- 5 loaves and 2 fish. Now they can be certain that the task they face
is impossible for them. At one time or another, nearly everyone of us
is called upon to serve others in an impossible situation: during the
illness of a family member or in a time of real financial pinch or when
we're facing a difficult ministry challenge or in an unfamiliar
environment or ... . No matter what the challenge may be, we realize
that we cannot accomplish our tasks through our own strength. Jesus
wants us to realize exactly where we are: in an impossible situation
unless his provision, his grace, his power, his guidance, and his
providence carry us through. Jesus wants us to know that our resources
are limited ... but his are unlimited.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, I realize that I am not sufficient for the challenges
I face. I confess that my resources are limited and that without your
help, mercy, grace, and power I cannot do what I need to do. Please

Today's Verse : 1 John 4:18

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 18, 2008

VERSE:
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,
because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not
made perfect in love.
-- 1 John 4:18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+4:18

THOUGHT:
Do you remember what Jesus said when he came walking on the
water to his disciples during the storm? He literally told them,
"Do not fear, I Am." In the presence of the holy and awesome Son of
God, we don't have to be afraid. God's grace to us in Jesus takes
away our need for fear because Jesus' sacrifice makes us holy,
without fault, and free from any charge against us (Colossians
1:21-22). Our response? Love! We love our Father for who he is, for
what he has done, for his great sacrifice for us, and most of all,
for making us holy and taking away our fear.

PRAYER:
Dear Father in heaven, you are holy, awesome, and glorious.
These are things I could never be without your grace, yet you have
chosen to give me these blessings through the sacrifice of your Son
Jesus. Thank you. I love you. In Jesus' name I praise you. Amen.
