VERSE:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present
evil age...
-- Galatians 1:3-4

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+1:3-4

THOUGHT:
Jesus comes to our rescue! Why? Because he knows the times in
which we live aren't easy. He knows that the world in which we live
is caught up in wickedness. That, however, is not the only reality.
He gives us great victory through his Cross. No wonder we can greet
each other with grace and peace. He purchased them for us.

PRAYER:
Father, please help me distinguish between good and evil as I
confront them daily in my life. Make evil repulsive to me despite
the many ways that Satan tries to make it look seductive. Thank
you, Jesus, for coming to my rescue when I was a sinner, unable to
save myself. Thank you for sharing your grace and giving me peace.
Through the blessed Holy Spirit I offer my thanks and praise in
Jesus' name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Nativity 1

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:6-7 NIV

As we move closer to the day of Christmas I want to focus our attention on the nativity scene. Many of us will have in our homes ceramic or wood statues representing the images we have of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago. Recently I saw a nativity set made by Nomads out of sheep's wool.

As we look at the nativity scene, I want to individually see who was there. If you think about it, this was the first Christmas; the first opportunity the world had to have "God with Us".

Before we look at who was there, however, maybe it would be a good idea to see who wasn't. So for the next few days, join with me as we examine those who missed that first Christmas.

The term "innkeeper" doesn't actually appear in the story of the birth of Jesus. Yes, it does say there was an inn, but it doesn't mention the inn's keeper. Logic would tell us there must have been someone in control. Obviously someone turned Mary and Joseph away. Perhaps it was an innkeeper. It is really hard to judge the innkeeper. Scripture doesn't say the innkeeper was mean, just that there was no room.

Whoever it was, they missed Christmas! They failed to recognize the awesomeness of what was about to occur. Had they known, can you only imagine the publicity? If you owned an inn, how would you like a plaque on the wall that read "Inn of Bethlehem; Birth Place of the Savior to the World!".

Yes, the innkeepers of Bethlehem missed Christmas. They turned away the Savior. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords was not given the best available that He deserved, He was given the left-overs; all so that you and I might feel He is approachable to us.

There was "no room" for Jesus in the homes of Bethlehem that first Christmas. Does He have a room in your home this Christmas?

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Mary's Choice, by Phil Ware

The story is familiar, maybe to the point that we have forgotten how
incredible it is. Some have trouble accepting the virgin conception and
birth of Jesus because it is so outside our experience. Since we
believe that God created and ordered a universe beyond our
comprehension, it is not so difficult to believe he could create a
child in the womb of a virgin. What is truly amazing to me is that this
young, peasant, pious, small-town Jewish virgin would accept such an
awesome and challenging task.

Let's read the story again with just a few questions and comments to
help us hear the story again and rejoice.

Do you think Mary ever imagined an angel would speak to her personally?
(Luke 1:26-29 TNIV)

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel
Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be
married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's
name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who
are highly favored! The Lord is with you."

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of
greeting this might be.

How could Mary think God would notice a poor girl like her from
despised Nazareth? Even the Bible itself reminds us that people of
Mary's day asked, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Why would God
notice her, in this out of the way place, among a group of people with
no claim to power or position? (Luke 1:30-33;John 1:46)

But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found
favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you
are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son
of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his
father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever;
his kingdom will never end."

Legend has it that Jewish women often prayed that they could be the
mother of the Messiah. But could Mary actually dare to pray such a
prayer? What right, what claim, did she have to even be able to utter
these words? The angel's word pull back the curtain of life and help us
see God's grace at ork. (Luke 1:34-37)

"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the
power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be
born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is
going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be
unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will
ever fail."

How could she believe God would bless her so when it appeared in every
way that he hadn't? After all, she was poor, her country under the heel
of the Roman boot and a people under subjugation for hundreds of years.
Mary had no financial or legal claim to expect God would bless her in
this way. Yet Mary believes that God has seen her situation and has
come to bless her! (Luke 1:46-49)

And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord

and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

for he has been mindful

of the humble state of his servant.

From now on all generations will call me blessed,

for the Mighty One has done great things for me -- holy is his
name.

Looking at the horrid political situation of her time -- couple with
the religious hypocrisy and power struggle -- how could Mary think of
of Herod and the Romans, yet still pray for God's deliverance? God's
deliverance seemed blocked the the power-mongers and the dishonest in
the system. Yet Mary proclaims: (Luke 1:50-52)

His mercy extends to those who fear him,

from generation to generation.

He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;

he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.

He has brought down rulers from their thrones

but has lifted up the humble.

How could she believe God would bless her so?

Don't you think it caught in her throat when she saw Pharisees &
Sadducees gloating in their rich and religious arrogance? But, Mary
reminds us that God is going to turn the tables and make things (Luke
1:53-55)

He has filled the hungry with good things

but has sent the rich away empty.

He has helped his servant Israel,

remembering to be merciful

to Abraham and his descendants forever,

just as he promised our ancestors."

Most of all, didn't Mary realize the mess she would be in by accepting
this challenge? Didn't she understand that she could lose her betrothed
husband, her friends, and her reputation as the rumors associated with
her son — like going to live with Elizabeth or Jesus being called
"Mary's Boy" because the (Joel 1:8)

Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth grieving for the betrothed of her
youth.

What makes Mary's partnership with the Holy Spirit of God so powerful?
When given the open challenge of bearing the Messiah miraculously
conceived in her womb by God's Holy Spirit, Mary said yes. She said yes
to the challenges and joys, surprises and wounds, the precious moments
with her baby and a horrifying moments as he was crucified before a
hardened and mocking mob. Had to be crushing. Hearing her son being
called Mary's boy had to be an embarrassment.

One verse, the miracle verse of the whole story comes out when Mary
answers the Lord with these incredible words of pledge: "I am the
Lord's servant ... May it be to me according to your word." (Luke 1:38)
Then the angel left her.

The miracle of Christmas certainly has to do with God creating his Son
in human flesh so he could be one of us. But equally a part of that
miracle are the words of a young, pious, jewish, woman to believe it
when she said it:

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me
according to your word." Then the angel left her.

Such is the stuff of miracle and grace. The stuff of character that
forms us to be like the Savior.

Morning & Evening -- Jeremiah 2:2 and John 10:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, December 17, 2007

MORNING:

"I remember thee."
-- Jeremiah 2:2

Let us note that Christ delights to think upon his Church, and to look
upon her beauty. As the bird returneth often to its nest, and as the
wayfarer hastens to his home, so doth the mind continually pursue the
object of its choice. We cannot look too often upon that face which we
love; we desire always to have our precious things in our sight. It is
even so with our Lord Jesus. From all eternity "His delights were with
the sons of men"; his thoughts rolled onward to the time when his elect
should be born into the world; he viewed them in the mirror of his
foreknowledge. "In thy book," he says, "all my members were written,
which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of
them" (Ps. 139:16). When the world was set upon its pillars, he was
there, and he set the bounds of the people according to the number of
the children of Israel. Many a time before his incarnation, he
descended to this lower earth in the similitude of a man; on the plains
of Mamre (Gen. 18), by the brook of Jabbok (Gen. 32:24-30), beneath the
walls of Jericho (Jos. 5:13), and in the fiery furnace of Babylon (Dan.
3:19, 25), the Son of Man visited his people. Because his soul
delighted in them, he could not rest away from them, for his heart
longed after them. Never were they absent from his heart, for he had
written their names upon his hands, and graven them upon his side. As
the breastplate containing the names of the tribes of Israel was the
most brilliant ornament worn by the high priest, so the names of
Christ's elect were his most precious jewels, and glittered on his
heart. We may often forget to meditate upon the perfections of our
Lord, but he never ceases to remember us. Let us chide ourselves for
past forgetfulness, and pray for grace ever to bear him in fondest
remembrance. Lord, paint upon the eyeballs of my soul the image of thy
Son.

EVENING:

"I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved,
and shall go in and out, and find pasture."
-- John 10:9

Jesus, the great I AM, is the entrance into the true church, and the
way of access to God himself. He gives to the man who comes to God by
him four choice privileges.

1. He shall be saved. The fugitive manslayer passed the gate of the
city of refuge, and was safe. Noah entered the door of the ark, and was
secure. None can be lost who take Jesus as the door of faith to their
souls. Entrance through Jesus into peace is the guarantee of entrance
by the same door into heaven. Jesus is the only door, an open door, a
wide door, a safe door; and blessed is he who rests all his hope of
admission to glory upon the crucified Redeemer.

2. He shall go in. He shall be privileged to go in among the divine
family, sharing the children's bread, and participating in all their
honours and enjoyments. He shall go in to the chambers of communion, to
the banquets of love, to the treasures of the covenant, to the
storehouses of the promises. He shall go in unto the King of kings in
the power of the Holy Spirit, and the secret of the Lord shall be with
him.

3. He shall go out. This blessing is much forgotten. We go out into the
world to labour and suffer, but what a mercy to go in the name and
power of Jesus! We are called to bear witness to the truth, to cheer
the disconsolate, to warn the careless, to win souls, and to glorify
God; and as the angel said to Gideon, "Go in this thy might," even thus
the Lord would have us proceed as his messengers in his name and
strength.

4. He shall find pasture. He who knows Jesus shall never want. Going in
and out shall be alike helpful to him: in fellowship with God he shall
grow, and in watering others he shall be watered. Having made Jesus his
all, he shall find all in Jesus. His soul shall be as a watered garden,
and as a well of water whose waters fail not.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Redemption Creates The Need It Satisfies"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 17, 2007

REDEMPTION CREATES THE NEED IT SATISFIES

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the
Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him.

1 Corinthians 2:14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1co+2:14&sr=1

The Gospel of God creates a sense of need of the Gospel. Paul says -
"If our gospel be hid, it is hid" - to those who are blackguards? No,
"to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded
the minds of them which believe not." The majority of people have
their morality well within their own grasp, they have no sense of
need of the Gospel. It is God Who creates the need of which no human
being is conscious until God manifests Himself. Jesus said - "Ask,
and it shall be given you," but God cannot give until a man asks. It
is not that He withholds, but that that is the way He has.
constituted things on the basis of Redemption. By means of our
asking, God gets processes into work whereby He creates the thing
that is not in existence until we do ask. The inner reality of
Redemption is that it creates all the time. As the Redemption creates
the life of God in us, so it creates the things belonging to that
life. Nothing can satisfy the need but that which created the need.
This is the meaning of Redemption - it creates and it satisfies.

"I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me." We
preach our own experiences and people are interested, but no sense of
need is awakened by it. If once Jesus Christ is lifted up, the Spirit
of God will create a conscious need of Him. Behind the preaching of
the Gospel is the creative Redemption of God at work in the souls of
men. It is never personal testimony that saves men. "The words that I
speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life."

Praying with Paul : "In Christ, the Fullness of Deity"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

IN CHRIST, THE FULLNESS OF DEITY

Colossians 2:8-9

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+2:8-9

Dear Father,

May I never be impressed with the philosophy and empty deceit that
comes out of human traditions which do not agree with Christ.

Keep me from being enticed by teachings that root their knowledge
in the elemental spirits of the universe, the laws of nature, and
in scientism, but not in Christ.

Help us to understand what it means that the very fullness of
deity dwells in our Lord bodily and that we have come to the
fullness of life in him and that he is the head of all rule and
authority.

Help us to hold fast to Christ, who is our head, in whose name I
pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Nothing! -- Luke 23:13-16

Nothing!

Pilate called all the people together with the leading
priests and the {Jewish} leaders. Pilate said to them, "You
brought this man (Jesus) to me. You said that he was trying
to change the people. But I judged him before you all. I
found no wrong that he had done. Jesus is not guilty of the
things you say. Also, Herod found nothing wrong with him;
Herod sent Jesus back to us. Look, Jesus has done nothing
wrong. He should not be killed. So, after I punish him a
little, I will let him go free."

-- Luke 23:13-16 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
"Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty." That pretty
much settles it. Jesus didn't deserve to die. He was falsely arrested,
falsely accused, falsely tried, and falsely executed. He doesn't die
for crimes he committed, but for our sins so we could be set free and
made children of God.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, thank you for your grace. Precious Lord and Savior,
thank you for your willing sacrifice for my sins. Holy Spirit, thank
you for your transforming work in my life. May my life never be an
affront to the grace given me, the sacrifice made for me, and the
Spirit that lives in me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
