Defeating the Subtleties of the Pharisees and Herodians

Defeating the Subtleties of the Pharisees and Herodians
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 20:22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
(23) But He perceived their craftiness and said to them, (24)
Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?
And they said, Caesar's. (25) And He said to them, Therefore
render the things that are Caesar's to Caesar, and the things
that are God's to God. (26) And they were not able to lay hold
of a saying of His in the presence of the people; and marveling
at His answer, they kept silent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the chief priests scribes, and elders were defeated by
the Man-Savior, the Pharisees and the Herodians tested Him
[cf Matt 22:16] . The Pharisees, a religious party, were
patriotic and faithful to the Jewish community. The Herodians
took sides with King Herod's regime and took part with him in
infiltrating the Jews with Grecian and Roman manners of life.
They sided with the Sadducees, but were opposed to the
Pharisees. But here they joined with the Pharisees to ensnare
the Lord Jesus. They worked together in the attempt to carry
out a plot to trap the Man-Savior.

According to verse 21, the Herodians and the Pharisees
questioned the Lord, saying, "Teacher, we know that you speak
and teach correctly, and do not accept man's person, but teach
the way of God in truth. Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to
Caesar, or not?" This was truly an ensnaring question. Paying
taxes to Caesar was opposed by the Jews. If the Lord Jesus said
that it was lawful to do this, He would offend the Pharisees.
But if He said that it was not lawful, He would give the
Herodians, who stood with the Roman government, ground to
accuse Him. By asking the Lord such a question they exposed
themselves as being base, dishonest, and insidious.

In handling this dilemma the Lord was again honest, pure, and
wise. Considering their craftiness, He said to them, "Show Me a
denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have? And they
said, Caesar's. And He said to them, Therefore pay the things
of Caesar to Caesar and the things of God to God." To pay the
things of Caesar to Caesar is to pay tribute to Caesar
according to his governmental regulation. To pay the things of
God to God is to pay the half shekel to God according to Exodus
30:11-16 and to offer all the tithes to God according to the
law of God.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Color of Grace, by Alan Smith

Ralph Milton tells of a teacher who asked the kids one day, "If all the
bad children were painted red and all the good children were painted
green, which color would you be?"

One child answered the teacher: "Striped."

No matter what you may think of an exercise like this done with kids,
it's an important question for us as adults. Think about it. What color
would you be? Red? Green? Striped? It's a really tough question when
you have only two options and one of them isn't striped!

When we compare ourselves with God, we realize that we're not "good" by
divine standards -- as Jesus said, "There is no one good but God alone"
(Mark 10:18). Those of us who follow Christ know that we're far from
perfect. ("If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the
truth is not in us" -- 1 John 1:8 TNIV.) The apostle Paul reminds us
that we've all fallen short of God's righteousness and holiness.
("There is no one who is righteous, not even one; ... since all have
sinned and fall short of the glory of God" -- Romans 3:9-23.)

I once had an elder who got upset every time I referred to Christians
as "sinners," but even the apostle Paul said, "I am the chief of
sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15). I know he was trying to emphasize that we've
all been forgiven, but the fact remains, I stumble and sin. So am I
good? Not when compared to God!

But, am I bad?

Hmm, that's an interesting question!

Hmm, that's an interesting question! The apostle John draws a definite
distinction between those who truly follow Jesus and those who continue
to live in (persist in) sin. "The one who practices sin is of the devil
.." (1 John 3:8 NASB) and they either deny their sin, claim their sin
doesn't matter, or that they have no guilt for their sin so they just
keep on with the lifestyle (1 John 1:5-10). Those following Jesus have
honestly come clean about their sinfulness and have been forgiven and
cleansed of all their sin (1 John 1:5-2:2). The focus of their lives is
not sin and ungodliness, but righteousness and holiness. Those
following Jesus are trying to put off the "old person" of their sinful
past along with its "former conduct" (Ephesians 4:22). While they
struggle with temptation, and sometimes even fail, are they bad?

No, I don't believe so. God forgives, cleanses, and restores them
because of what Jesus has done (1 John 5:7).

So which color would you be?

Were it not for a dear Friend who died in my stead, I would have no
choice but to paint myself red. But, because Jesus Christ took on the
color red -- in a very literal way -- and because of my obedient trust
in Him, He has transferred His righteousness to me, and I can proudly
wear the color green!

"God made him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in
him we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21
TNIV).

Morning & Evening -- John 21:12 and Psalms 36:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

MORNING:

"Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine."
-- John 21:12

In these words the believer is invited to a holy nearness to Jesus.
"Come and dine," implies the same table, the same meat; aye, and
sometimes it means to sit side by side, and lean our head upon the
Saviour's bosom. It is being brought into the banqueting-house, where
waves the banner of redeeming love. "Come and dine," gives us a vision
of union with Jesus, because the only food that we can feast upon when
we dine with Jesus is himself. Oh, what union is this! It is a depth
which reason cannot fathom, that we thus feed upon Jesus. "He that
eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him."
It is also an invitation to enjoy fellowship with the saints.
Christians may differ on a variety of points, but they have all one
spiritual appetite; and if we cannot all feel alike, we can all feed
alike on the bread of life sent down from heaven. At the table of
fellowship with Jesus we are one bread and one cup. As the loving cup
goes round we pledge one another heartily therein. Get nearer to Jesus,
and you will find yourself linked more and more in spirit to all who
are like yourself, supported by the same heavenly manna. If we were
more near to Jesus we should be more near to one another. We likewise
see in these words the source of strength for every Christian. To look
at Christ is to live, but for strength to serve him you must "come and
dine." We labour under much unnecessary weakness on account of
neglecting this percept of the Master. We none of us need to put
ourselves on low diet; on the contrary, we should fatten on the marrow
and fatness of the gospel that we may accumulate strength therein, and
urge every power to its full tension in the Master's service. Thus,
then, if you would realize nearness to Jesus, union with Jesus, love to
his people and strength from Jesus, "come and dine" with him by faith.

EVENING:

"With thee is the fountain of life."
-- Psalms 36:9

There are times in our spiritual experience when human counsel or
sympathy, or religious ordinances, fail to comfort or help us. Why does
our gracious God permit this? Perhaps it is because we have been living
too much without him, and he therefore takes away everything upon which
we have been in the habit of depending, that he may drive us to
himself. It is a blessed thing to live at the fountain head. While our
skin- bottles are full, we are content, like Hagar and Ishmael, to go
into the wilderness; but when those are dry, nothing will serve us but
"Thou God seest me." We are like the prodigal, we love the
swine-troughs and forget our Father's house. Remember, we can make
swine-troughs and husks even out of the forms of religion; they are
blessed things, but we may put them in God's place, and then they are
of no value. Anything becomes an idol when it keeps us away from God:
even the brazen serpent is to be despised as "Nehushtan," if we worship
it instead of God. The prodigal was never safer than when he was driven
to his father's bosom, because he could find sustenance nowhere else.
Our Lord favours us with a famine in the land that it may make us seek
after himself the more. The best position for a Christian is living
wholly and directly on God's grace-still abiding where he stood at
first-"Having nothing, and yet possessing all things." Let us never for
a moment think that our standing is in our sanctification, our
mortification, our graces, or our feelings, but know that because
Christ offered a full atonement, therefore we are saved; for we are
complete in him. Having nothing of our own to trust to, but resting
upon the merits of Jesus-his passion and holy life furnish us with the
only sure ground of confidence. Beloved, when we are brought to a
thirsting condition, we are sure to turn to the fountain of life with
eagerness.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Key To The Master's Orders"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 16, 2007

THE KEY TO THE MASTER'S ORDERS

Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will
send forth labourers into His harvest.

Matthew 9:38

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+9:38&sr=1

The key to the missionary problem is in the hand of God, and that key
is prayer not work, that is, not work as the word is popularly
understood to-day because that may mean the evasion of concentration
on God. The key to the missionary problem is not the key of common
sense, nor the medical key, nor the key of civilization or education
or even evangelization. The key is prayer. "Pray ye therefore the
Lord of the harvest." Naturally, prayer is not practical, it is
absurd; we have to realize that prayer is stupid from the ordinary
common-sense point of view.

There are no nations in Jesus Christ's outlook, but the world. How
many of us pray with out respect of persons, and with respect to only
one Person, Jesus Christ? He owns the harvest that is produced by
distress and conviction of sin, and this is the harvest we have to
pray that labourers may be thrust out to reap. We are taken up with
active work while people all round are ripe to harvest, and we do not
reap one of them, but waste our Lord's time in over-energized
activities. Suppose the crisis comes in your father's life, in your
brother's life, are you there as a labourer to reap the harvest for
Jesus Christ? "Oh, but I have a special work to do!" No Christian has
a special work to do. A Christian is called to be Jesus Christ's own,
one who is not above his Master, one who does not dictate to Jesus
Christ what he intends to do. Our Lord calls to no special work: He
calls to Himself. "Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest," and He
will engineer circumstances and thrust you out.

Mustard Seed Thought: God's Promise Seven

being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will
carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6
NIV

If God starts something; He finishes. If you are a Christian you can find
comfort in those words. One day, you will be perfect, sinning no more.
God wants you to experience spiritual growth everyday. You might ask
yourself: Am I more mature in my Christian walk today than I was this
time last year?

I am a teacher. I love to share God's Word with other Christians. When I
teach my goal is to see spiritual growth. I tell people I'm teaching
often that when I cease to see growth, I will look for another audience.
(I realize that is God's decision and not my own, but the statement
reflects my heart.) Praise God there are those who are showing visible
signs of growth.

God wants to conform you into the image of His Son. Sometimes that means He
wants you to spend more time in His Word. Sometimes He will bring
someone into your life that will disciple you and teach you aspects of
God's character. Often times, God will use circumstances of your life to
produce fruit. Trials are one of the chief ways God grows His children.
As we suffer through the hard times of life, we learn to rely on Him and
that apart from Him we can do nothing. God may use a variety of methods,
but in the end, God is working towards spiritual growth in your life if
you are a Christian. God wants you to look like Jesus.

There is a fallacy in the minds of some Christians that once they reach a
certain age, their Christian journey on earth is over. That is simply
not what Scripture teaches. We see the example of Abraham, Moses, and
the Apostle John, who wrote the book of Revelation while on the island
of Patmos, in chains for the gospel, when he was perhaps as old as 90
years of age. Are you on the growth journey? If you will submit your
life fully to Christ, God will work in you to mold you into Christ's
image.

In closing, I'm reminded of the passage in Psalm 92 "The righteous will
flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of
our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and
green"

Oh, Lord, may this be written about my life!

Praying with Paul : "No More Division"

NO MORE DIVISION

Ephesians 2:14-16

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+2:14-16

Dear Father, reconciler of humanity,

Thank you for sending Jesus to break down the dividing wall of
hostility between Jew and non-Jew. By the way he lived and the way
he died - in his flesh - he rendered ineffective the law of
commandments given as "decrees."

He lived a life unto you that went beyond obeying commands. He
yielded himself in truly loving obedience from the heart.

Thank you that he did this to create in himself one new man, one
new humanity instead of the two, one Jewish and one not Jewish.

Thank you for the peace and reconciliation we both have in you in
his one body offered on the cross to bring our enmity to an end.

In the name of Jesus, our Peace. Amen.

Caught Up in the Clouds!

"At the time when I come again, there may be two people
sleeping in one room. One person will be taken and the other
person will be left. There may be two women working together.
One woman will be taken and the other woman will be left."

-- Luke 17:34-36 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
This is often called the rapture, although that term is never used in
the New Testament in this regard. I prefer to call it "caught up in the
clouds!" This phrase comes from Paul's explanation of these events in 1
Thessalonians 4:13-18. When Jesus ascended into heaven, the apostles
were told that Jesus would also return in the clouds. We await this day
of victory and glory that is promised. However, for those who do not
belong to the Lord, this will be a day they are left behind. Meanwhile,
the children of God will receive their ultimate adoption as God's
children and will be ushered into his presence by Jesus in his glory
and in the glory of the angels that accompany him.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, I long for and look forward to the day of Jesus' return. My
only anxiety about that day is that I want all those I know to be ready
and to accompany me into your presence. Please give me the words to say
and the character of life to show these friends, acquaintances, and
loved ones how to be ready and to anticipate this day with joy. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Mark 9:23

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 16, 2007

VERSE:
"`If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who
believes."
-- Mark 9:23

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Mark+9:23

THOUGHT:
Jesus is the ultimate one "who believes." All things ARE
possible for him. Guess what? He longs to do great things through
us, too! In fact, he promised he would do even greater things
through us than he did himself because he is now at the Father's
side helping us! (See John 14:12-14.) So isn't it time that we quit
talking about what we can't do, and start believing in the one who
can do great things? Paul put it this way: God can do "more than we
can ask or imagine by his power at work in us." (Ephesians 3:20-21)

PRAYER:
Great Almighty God, Ruler of the nations, Creator of the
universe, and Lord of all things, please forgive me. Forgive me for
my wimpy and limited prayers. Forgive me for getting involved in
petty quarrels over mundane and irrelevant things. Forgive me for
my spiritual lack of vision. Please stir me by your Spirit. Please
open my eyes so that I can see what you long to do through me.
Please empower me to be a powerful witness to our world trapped in
darkness. Please give me incredible dreams for your Kingdom, then
astound me by doing far more than I ever imagined. In the name of
Jesus, and to your glory, I pray. Amen.
