Today's Verse : John 1:1

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 23, 2007

VERSE:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God.
-- John 1:1

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=John+1:1

THOUGHT:
God's Message of salvation was with him at creation. In fact, by
nature, the one who was the Message was God himself. John wants us
to know that Jesus, God's Word and ultimate Message, was with God
from the very beginning. The one who turns water to wine, feeds the
5000, and raises Lazarus didn't make his human appearance on earth
until he was born in Bethlehem, but he has always been there. He is
God with us, as Matthew puts it (Matthew 1:23). He is God come to
visit us as Luke tells us (Luke 7:16). He is the Son of God as Mark
reminds (Mark 1:1). He is God's ultimate and final Word (Hebrews
1:1-2)!

PRAYER:
Father, help me better know your Message, both in print and in
life. Please teach me more about Jesus and his heart for people and
his love for you. May he be my Lord in word, deed, and motivation.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Are We Missing Something?, by Tom Norvell

It is 1:00 on Saturday afternoon not too long before Christmas. The
kids are with their friends and will be well cared for until the
evening hours. You and your spouse decide this is the perfect time to
finish up your holiday shopping. "Let's go to the mall and get this
done," she says gleefully. "Okay," you respond with a little less glee.
Off you go.

You only live five minutes from the mall on a normal day. However, on
this particular Saturday afternoon, it takes you fifteen minutes to get
to where you can see the mall. Traffic is crazy. When you see the line
of cars waiting to turn into the mall, it is backed up for more than
two blocks. It's at this point that you have your first thought that
this might not have been such a good idea to go shopping. Not wanting
to appear to be lacking in Christmas cheer, you do not dare to reveal
these feelings to your spouse. So, you wait.

The light changes four times before you get close to the entrance.
Finally, it's your turn. You are ready to turn, except the driver in
front of you sits there talking on the phone as the light turns green
and then turns red again. Just as the light changes, the driver
realizes what's happening and guns it, just making it through and
almost being broadsided by cars coming from the other direction.
Several friendly drivers honk to encourage the move.

Finally, you, along with several thousand other shoppers, reach the
inner circle of the mall and you are all looking for the same parking
space. You've been down every aisle near the food court and are finally
working your way over to the Sears lawn and garden area. At least you
can see the lawn and garden area. You see a place and are just about to
pull in when your wife says, "Oooh. It's so cold. Let's look for one
just a little closer." You cannot believe it, but you don't want her to
know you are just a little frustrated. So, on you drive. Ah!!! After
three more loops you find one. As you walk toward the mall entrance,
you count and you are a whopping three spaces closer than you were
earlier. But, she's thrilled at how the space "opened up just for us."
So, you say nothing.

You are inside the mall, and now the real "fun" begins. People are
everywhere. Lots and lots of people. Mobs of people. Busy people.
Hurried people. Weary people. Stressed-out people. Children. Thousands
of children. Children who are looking for Santa. Children who have seen
Santa, had lots of candy, not had a nap, and are now ready to go home.
Moms and Dads who stopped having fun a long time ago. These people are
everywhere!

All these people are now standing in line. Lines in the stores. Lines
at the coffee shop. Lines at the food court. Lines in the restroom. One
line seemed to be a line you had to stand in until it was your turn to
stand in the other line. Guess what? The old idea that the left line
moves faster is not true. None of these lines move quickly.

Long lines. Crowded stores. Tired and fussy children. Tired and fussy
parents. And the music playing over the loud speakers is a jazzed-up
version of the elevator-music-style of what sounded like "I'll Be Home
for Christmas."

You turn to your wife and say ...

You and your wife are almost to the breaking point, when you look at
her and she looks at you. She smiles at you and you smile at her. The
she says the words you've longed to hear, "Let's go home!"

You successfully exit the mall, find your car, and get in the long line
of cars leaving the mall -- at least that's where you hope you are
going. You both sit quietly wondering what it was you just did. You
turn on the radio and hear a choir softly singing, "All is calm, all is
.. Sleep in heavenly peace." You turn to your wife and say, "Do you
suppose we are missing something?"

You recall these words from the grand ol' story: "Glory to God in the
highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests" (Luke 2:14
NIV).

You still have time to not miss the real meaning of the season.

Morning & Evening -- Isaiah 41:10 and Deuteronomy 32:5

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, December 22, 2007

MORNING:

"I will strengthen thee."
-- Isaiah 41:10

God has a strong reserve with which to discharge this engagement; for
he is able to do all things. Believer, till thou canst drain dry the
ocean of omnipotence, till thou canst break into pieces the towering
mountains of almighty strength, thou never needest to fear. Think not
that the strength of man shall ever be able to overcome the power of
God. Whilst the earth's huge pillars stand, thou hast enough reason to
abide firm in thy faith. The same God who directs the earth in its
orbit, who feeds the burning furnace of the sun, and trims the lamps of
heaven, has promised to supply thee with daily strength. While he is
able to uphold the universe, dream not that he will prove unable to
fulfil his own promises. Remember what he did in the days of old, in
the former generations. Remember how he spake and it was done; how he
commanded, and it stood fast. Shall he that created the world grow
weary? He hangeth the world upon nothing; shall he who doth this be
unable to support his children? Shall he be unfaithful to his word for
want of power? Who is it that restrains the tempest? Doth not he ride
upon the wings of the wind, and make the clouds his chariots, and hold
the ocean in the hollow of his hand? How can he fail thee? When he has
put such a faithful promise as this on record, wilt thou for a moment
indulge the thought that he has outpromised himself, and gone beyond
his power to fulfil? Ah, no! Thou canst doubt no longer.

O thou who art my God and my strength, I can believe that this promise
shall be fulfilled, for the boundless reservoir of thy grace can never
be exhausted, and the overflowing storehouse of thy strength can never
be emptied by thy friends or rifled by thine enemies.

"Now let the feeble all be strong,
And make Jehovah's arm their song."

EVENING:

"The spot of his children."
-- Deuteronomy 32:5

What is the secret spot which infallibly betokens the child of God? It
were vain presumption to decide this upon our own judgment; but God's
word reveals it to us, and we may tread surely where we have revelation
to be our guide. Now, we are told concerning our Lord, "to as many as
received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to
as many as believed on his name." Then, if I have received Christ Jesus
into my heart, I am a child of God. That reception is described in the
same verse as believing on the name of Jesus Christ. If, then, I
believe on Jesus Christ's name-that is, simply from my heart trust
myself with the crucified, but now exalted, Redeemer, I am a member of
the family of the Most High. Whatever else I may not have, if I have
this, I have the privilege to become a child of God. Our Lord Jesus
puts it in another shape. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and
they follow me." Here is the matter in a nutshell. Christ appears as a
shepherd to his own sheep, not to others. As soon as he appears, his
own sheep perceive him-they trust him, they are prepared to follow him;
he knows them, and they know him-there is a mutual knowledge-there is a
constant connection between them. Thus the one mark, the sure mark, the
infallible mark of regeneration and adoption is a hearty faith in the
appointed Redeemer. Reader, are you in doubt, are you uncertain whether
you bear the secret mark of God's children? Then let not an hour pass
over your head till you have said, "Search me, O God, and know my
heart." Trifle not here, I adjure you! If you must trifle anywhere, let
it be about some secondary matter: your health, if you will, or the
title deeds of your estate; but about your soul, your never-dying soul
and its eternal destinies, I beseech you to be in earnest. Make sure
work for eternity.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Drawing Of The Father"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 22, 2007

THE DRAWING OF THE FATHER

No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent
Me draw him.

John 6:44

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+6:44&sr=1

When God draws me, the issue of my will comes in at once - will I
react on the revelation which God gives - will I come to Him?
Discussion on spiritual matters is an impertinence. Never discuss
with anyone when God speaks. Belief is not an intellectual act;
belief is a moral act whereby I deliberately commit myself. Will I
dump myself down absolutely on God and transact on what He says? If I
will, I shall find I am based on Reality that is as sure as God's
throne.

In preaching the gospel, always push an issue of will. Belief must be
the will to believe. There must be a surrender of the will, not a
surrender to persuasive power, a deliberate launching forth on God
and on what He says until I am no longer confident in what I have
done, I am confident only in God. The hindrance is that I will not
trust God, but only my mental understanding. As far as feelings go, I
must stake all blindly. I must will to believe, and this can never be
done without a violent effort on my part to disassociate myself from
my old ways of looking at things, and by putting myself right over on
to Him.

Every man is made to reach out beyond his grasp. It is God who draws
me, and my relationship to Him in the first place is a personal one,
not an intellectual one. I am introduced into the relationship by the
miracle of God and my own will to believe, then I begin to get an
intelligent appreciation and understanding of the wonder of the
transaction.

Praying with Paul : "Extinguishing Evil"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

EXTINGUISHING EVIL

Colossians 3:5-17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+3:5-17

Dear Father,

Help me put to death certain things in my life that are earthly -
inward evils ranging from impurity to covetousness.

Most of all, may I be rid of covetousness, wanting the applause
and possessions of this world, which is really idolatry.

May I extinguish all outward evil ranging from anger to slander
and foul talk.

Keep me from everything that is false. Don't let a lie come to my
mind or my lips.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Remember Me!

But the other criminal stopped him. He said, "You should fear
God! All of us will die soon! You and I are guilty; we should
be killed because we did wrong. But this man (Jesus) has done
nothing wrong!" Then this criminal said to Jesus, "Jesus,
remember me when you begin ruling as king!" Then Jesus said
to him, "Listen! What I say is true: Today you will be with
me in Paradise!"

-- Luke 23:40-43 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus had told his disciples "Remember me!" as they shared in the
Lord's Supper. So for thousands of years, Christians the world over
take the bread and fruit of the vine during the Lord's Supper and
remember Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Ironically, even while
the thief is dying on a cross near Jesus, he confesses Jesus' innocence
and then asks that Jesus "Remember me." So in the horror of his own
crucifixion, Jesus offers this dying man a special moment of grace.
Jesus reassures the dying criminal that he will share paradise with
Jesus. Jesus will remember him! Jesus is faithful and he will not
forget this man's request. Jesus will also remember our confessions of
faith, deeds of kindness done in his name, and our faithfulness to the
Father. "Remember me!" we cry out to the Lord; thankfully, we already
know his answer!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, never ever let me outlive my faith in Jesus and my hope that is
stirred every time I remember what he has done for me. In Jesus' name.
Amen.
