=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Of Grasshoppers and Giants, by Russ Lawson

I was reading in the Bible recently, going over the story of the
Children of Israel as the traveled through the wilderness (Numbers 13).
They had reached a point where God basically says, "It's time for you
to stop wandering and head to the land I promised you."

You're probably familiar with the story. Moses sends 12 spies into the
land of Canaan to check it out. Actually the word translated as "spies"
could literally be translated as those who would survey the land in
preparation for dividing it between the Israelite tribes.

But as you probably also know, things didn't work out so well with
those spies. They returned after 40 days and 10 of them were scared to
death. While they carried back wonderful proclamations and examples of
what a wonderful land it was, they forgot God. They said, "There we saw
the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were
like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight" (Numbers
13:33 NKJV).

Another translation puts it this way, "We even saw giants there, the
descendants of Anak. We felt like grasshoppers next to them, and that's
what we looked like to them!" (NLT)

That statement may not sound earth-shattering to you, but these men
swayed the thinking of a million people by those few words. The people
of Israel rebelled and refused to accept this great opportunity God had
given them. Their fear caused them to forget God.

They forgot the plagues he brought upon Egypt. They forgot God's
preservation of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In short they forgot their
family history. They forgot the parting of the Red Sea, They forgot the
Manna and quail and most importantly they forgot their relationship
with the creator of the Universe

What is it that you fear?

Is it enough to cause you to forget the power of the creator?

Some of the most powerful words ever written!

Is it enough to cause you to stop trusting the one who gives you life
eternal?

I wonder how far we could travel, how many enemies we could conquer, if
we would only put fear aside?

Our problem is often that of the Israelite spies, "We feel like
grasshoppers next to them." We need to go ahead in spite of the
pounding in the heart that says, "Turn Back!"

Let me encourage you to reach down into your soul and find the faith
and trust in God to face your next challenge, knowing that God is by
your side. The apostle Paul wrote gives us some of the most powerful
words ever written regarding God being on our side! Notice just some of
what he says:

Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is
God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died
-- more than that, who was raised to life -- is at the right hand
of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from
the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or
famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: "For your
sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be
slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors
through him who loved us (Romans 8:33-37 NIV).

We are "more than conquerors through him who loved us!" Let's not cave
in to fear, but step out and claim the promise!

Morning & Evening -- Revelation 21:23 and Luke 8:42

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, August 3, 2008

MORNING:

"The Lamb is the light thereof."
-- Revelation 21:23

Quietly contemplate the Lamb as the light of heaven. Light in Scripture
is the emblem of joy. The joy of the saints in heaven is comprised in
this: Jesus chose us, loved us, bought us, cleansed us, robed us, kept
us, glorified us: we are here entirely through the Lord Jesus. Each one
of these thoughts shall be to them like a cluster of the grapes of
Eshcol. Light is also the cause of beauty. Nought of beauty is left
when light is gone. Without light no radiance flashes from the
sapphire, no peaceful ray proceedeth from the pearl; and thus all the
beauty of the saints above comes from Jesus. As planets, they reflect
the light of the Sun of Righteousness; they live as beams proceeding
from the central orb. If he withdrew, they must die; if his glory were
veiled, their glory must expire. Light is also the emblem of knowledge.
In heaven our knowledge will be perfect, but the Lord Jesus himself
will be the fountain of it. Dark providences, never understood before,
will then be clearly seen, and all that puzzles us now will become
plain to us in the light of the Lamb. Oh! what unfoldings there will be
and what glorifying of the God of love! Light also means manifestation.
Light manifests. In this world it doth not yet appear what we shall be.
God's people are a hidden people, but when Christ receives his people
into heaven, he will touch them with the wand of his own love, and
change them into the image of his manifested glory. They were poor and
wretched, but what a transformation! They were stained with sin, but
one touch of his finger, and they are bright as the sun, and clear as
crystal. Oh! what a manifestation! All this proceeds from the exalted
Lamb. Whatever there may be of effulgent splendour, Jesus shall be the
centre and soul of it all. Oh! to be present and to see him in his own
light, the King of kings, and Lord of lords!

EVENING:

"But as he went."
-- Luke 8:42

Jesus is passing through the throng to the house of Jairus, to raise
the ruler's dead daughter; but he is so profuse in goodness that he
works another miracle while upon the road. While yet this rod of Aaron
bears the blossom of an unaccomplished wonder, it yields the ripe
almonds of a perfect work of mercy. It is enough for us, if we have
some one purpose, straightway to go and accomplish it; it were
imprudent to expend our energies by the way. Hastening to the rescue of
a drowning friend, we cannot afford to exhaust our strength upon
another in like danger. It is enough for a tree to yield one sort of
fruit, and for a man to fulfil his own peculiar calling. But our Master
knows no limit of power or boundary of mission. He is so prolific of
grace, that like the sun which shines as it rolls onward in its orbit,
his path is radiant with lovingkindness. He is a swift arrow of love,
which not only reaches its ordained target, but perfumes the air
through which it flies. Virtue is evermore going out of Jesus, as sweet
odours exhale from flowers; and it always will be emanating from him,
as water from a sparkling fountain. What delightful encouragement this
truth affords us! If our Lord is so ready to heal the sick and bless
the needy, then, my soul, be not thou slow to put thyself in his way,
that he may smile on thee. Be not slack in asking, if he be so abundant
in bestowing. Give earnest heed to his word now, and at all times, that
Jesus may speak through it to thy heart. Where he is to be found there
make thy resort, that thou mayst obtain his blessing. When he is
present to heal, may he not heal thee? But surely he is present even
now, for he always comes to hearts which need him. And dost not thou
need him? Ah, he knows how much! Thou Son of David, turn thine eye and
look upon the distress which is now before thee, and make thy suppliant
whole.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Big Compelling Of God"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

August 3, 2008

THE BIG COMPELLING OF GOD

Behold, we go up to Jerusalem.

Luke 18:31
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+18:31&sr=1

Jerusalem stands in the life of Our Lord as the place where He
reached the climax of His Father's will. "I seek not Mine own will,
but the will of the Father which hath sent Me." That was the one
dominating interest all through our Lord's life, and the things He
met with on the way, joy or sorrow, success or failure, never
deterred Him from His purpose. "He steadfastly set His face to go to
Jerusalem."

The great thing to remember is that we go up to Jerusalem to fulfil
God's purpose, not our own. Naturally, our ambitions are our own; in
the Christian life we have no aim of our own. There is so much said
to-day about our decisions for Christ, our determination to be
Christians, our decisions for this and that, but in the New Testament
it is the aspect of God's compelling that is brought out. "Ye have
not chosen Me, but I have chosen you." We are not taken up into
conscious agreement with God's purpose, we are taken up into God's
purpose without any consciousness at all. We have no conception of
what God is aiming at, and as we go on it gets more and more vague.
God's aim looks like missing the mark because we are too short
sighted to see what He is aiming at. At the beginning of the
Christian life we have our own ideas as to what God's purpose is - 'I
am meant to go here or there,' 'God has called me to do this special
work'; and we go and do the thing, and still the big compelling of
God remains. The work we do is of no account, it is so much
scaffolding compared with the big compelling of God. "He took unto
Him the twelve," He takes us all the time. There is more than we have
got at as yet.

WORK AND DISCIPLINE

2 Thessalonians 3:6-15
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Thessalonians+3:6-15

Dear Father, God who worked to create all things,

Guide us and empower us to do our work in quietness, to avoid
idleness, and to earn our own living. Help us not to grow weary in
well-doing.

Help us to follow the example of your emissaries, of Paul and the
others, who did not seize some economic advantage from their
positions, but worked to provide for their own needs. Help us to
encourage and enforce a good work ethic among Christians so that we
may be highly regarded among all people.

Help us to be disciplined among ourselves, to exhort and warn each
other, but also to be kind and loving and to treat each other as
beloved brothers and sisters in Christ.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Have Mercy on Me! -- Mark 10:46-47

Have Mercy on Me!

Then they came to the town of Jericho. Jesus was leaving that
town with his followers and many other people. A blind man
named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting by the road.
This man was always begging for money. The blind man heard
that Jesus from Nazareth was walking by. The blind man
shouted, "Jesus, Son of David, please help me!"

-- Mark 10:46-47 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
So often we let pride and social convention keep us from asking from
God what we most need from him and what he is often most willing to
give us -- mercy. Let's not be shamed into silence. When we realize we
need mercy, grace, and forgiveness, let's not be shy about humbly
asking for it from our generous and loving Father.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, without your mercy and grace I would surely fail to find my
way into your holiness presence. Thank you for lavishing your gifts of
grace and the Holy Spirit upon me. Let me never forget your mercy,
love, and grace. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Romans 8:3-4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

August 3, 2008

VERSE:
For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by
the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness
of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in
sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law
might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful
nature but according to the Spirit.
-- Romans 8:3-4
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+8:3-4

THOUGHT:
God gives us two gifts that fulfill the Law's righteous demands,
but which the Law itself could never give us. First, he gives us
the perfect sin offering -- his Son Jesus -- to forgive, cleanse,
and redeem us from our sin. Second, he gives us his Spirit to
empower us to be what he wants us to be. God gives us in the New
Covenant what the Law and the Prophets promised was coming. Praise
God for his plan, his promises, and his gifts!

PRAYER:
Thank you, Heavenly Father, for your incomparable kindness and
grace in giving me your great and perfect gifts of your precious
and perfect Son and the blessed Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, and by
the intercession of the Holy Spirit, I praise and thank you dear
Father. Amen.
