The Fleshly Lusts Warring Against the Soul

The Fleshly Lusts Warring Against the Soul

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1Pet 2:11 Beloved, I entreat you as strangers and sojourners
to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul,
1The 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification:
that you abstain from fornication;
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In verse 11 Peter refers to the believers as sojourners and
pilgrims. He begs these sojourners and pilgrims to abstain
from fleshly lusts. This entreaty is a very practical matter
and not merely a doctrine. Here Peter seems to be saying, "I
beg you all to abstain from fleshly lusts. Do you know who
you are? You are not worldly people. You are sojourners and
pilgrims, people who belong to another country and who are
traveling through a foreign country. Actually, you are on
this earth as aliens, for you are not citizens of the earth.
You are heavenly sojourners and spiritual pilgrims. As such
persons, you should live a life that is different from that
of the worldly people. You need to abstain from the vain
manner of life. The vain manner of life is a life that comes
out of fleshly lusts. Therefore, in order to show others that
you are heavenly aliens, you must abstain from fleshly
lusts."

In verse 11 Peter says that the fleshly lusts war against the
soul. The fallen body is fleshly and full of lusts. The
fleshly lusts in the fallen body war against the soul,
against our inner being, that includes the mind, the will,
and the emotion. Often we think good things, love good
things, and decide to do good things. Thinking is in the
mind, loving is in the emotion, and the deciding is in the
will. Nevertheless, the fleshly lusts often war against what
we think in our mind, what we love in our emotion, and what
we decide with our will. The fleshly lusts are contrary to
our good thoughts, intentions, and decisions. Therefore, we
should abstain from the fleshly lusts which war against the
soul

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

At Just the Right Time!, by Tom Norvell

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless,
Christ died for the ungodly (Romans 5:6 NIV).

You see, at just the right time when it appeared that life could not
get any worse, when you felt hopeless and when you wanted to give up,
God stepped in and did something amazing and unexpected.

A friend showed up.

An envelope appeared in your mailbox with the exact amount of money you
needed for that bill. No name. Just money.

Someone you had not heard from in years called because for some strange
reason you were on her mind.

The job offer came.

Your husband realized he and had made a terrible mistake and asked for
another chance.

The contract was accepted.

The call came from your son ... he wants to come home.

Was it a coincidence?

The church you had visited started a ministry that reached out to you.

The urge to drink lessened.

The professor asked you to come by for a chat because he was concerned
about you.

The doctor discovered a treatment he thought would work.

Did these things just happen? Was it a coincidence? Or, was God working
to help you see that He cares and that He is working for good in your
life ... even when you do not realize it. He wants you to see that He
loves you. He wants you to know that He cares about you and is
genuinely concerned about the day-to-day events in your life ... big
and small. Not only is He concerned about you but, you see, He responds
at just the right time. His timing is always right.

The guilt from your sins was so heavy that you wondered if you could be
saved. "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless,
Christ died for the ungodly."

Morning & Evening -- 1 Thessalonians 1:4 and 1 Kings 18:40

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, July 17, 2008

MORNING:

"Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God."
-- 1 Thessalonians 1:4

Many persons want to know their election before they look to Christ,
but they cannot learn it thus, it is only to be discovered by "looking
unto Jesus." If you desire to ascertain your own election;-after the
following manner, shall you assure your heart before God. Do you feel
yourself to be a lost, guilty sinner? go straightway to the cross of
Christ, and tell Jesus so, and tell him that you have read in the
Bible, "Him that cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out." Tell him
that he has said, "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all
acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners."
Look to Jesus and believe on him, and you shall make proof of your
election directly, for so surely as thou believest, thou art elect. If
you will give yourself wholly up to Christ and trust him, then you are
one of God's chosen ones; but if you stop and say, "I want to know
first whether I am elect," you ask you know not what. Go to Jesus, be
you never so guilty, just as you are. Leave all curious inquiry about
election alone. Go straight to Christ and hide in his wounds, and you
shall know your election. The assurance of the Holy Spirit shall be
given to you, so that you shall be able to say, "I know whom I have
believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have
committed to him." Christ was at the everlasting council: he can tell
you whether you were chosen or not; but you cannot find it out in any
other way. Go and put your trust in him, and his answer will be-"I have
loved thee with an everlasting love, therefore with lovingkindness have
I drawn thee." There will be no doubt about his having chosen you, when
you have chosen him.

"Sons we are through God's election,
Who in Jesus Christ believe."

EVENING:

"Let not one of them escape."
-- 1 Kings 18:40

When the prophet Elijah had received the answer to his prayer, and the
fire from heaven had consumed the sacrifice in the presence of all the
people, he called upon the assembled Israelites to take the priests of
Baal, and sternly cried, "Let not one of them escape." He took them all
down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there. So must it be with our
sins-they are all doomed, not one must be preserved. Our darling sin
must die. Spare it not for its much crying. Strike, though it be as
dear as an Isaac. Strike, for God struck at sin when it was laid upon
his own Son. With stern unflinching purpose must you condemn to death
that sin which was once the idol of your heart. Do you ask how you are
to accomplish this? Jesus will be your power. You have grace to
overcome sin given you in the covenant of grace; you have strength to
win the victory in the crusade against inward lusts, because Christ
Jesus has promised to be with you even unto the end. If you would
triumph over darkness, set yourself in the presence of the Sun of
Righteousness. There is no place so well adapted for the discovery of
sin, and recovery from its power and guilt, as the immediate presence
of God. Job never knew how to get rid of sin half so well as he did
when his eye of faith rested upon God, and then he abhorred himself,
and repented in dust and ashes. The fine gold of the Christian is oft
becoming dim. We need the sacred fire to consume the dross. Let us fly
to our God, he is a consuming fire; he will not consume our spirit, but
our sins. Let the goodness of God excite us to a sacred jealousy, and
to a holy revenge against those iniquities which are hateful in his
sight. Go forth to battle with Amalek, in his strength, and utterly
destroy the accursed crew: let not one of them escape.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Faith Really Is...1

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Faith Really Is...1
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. Hebrews 11:1-2 NIV

Today we begin a series exploring the Biblical definition of faith. We don't have to wonder what faith is. Hebrews 11:1 very plainly explains it to us. Many times, however, I think we don't fully comprehend what faith means in the life of a Christian.

I remember several times as a business owner waiting for a check to come in the mail. Being a small business owner, many days everything you do depends on the cash flow situation at that time. (I know several of you identify in these economic times.) According to the definition of faith, if I believed strongly enough that a check would be there, would it be? If no check was in the mail, was that a direct relation to my lack of faith? In other words, would God have allowed or not allowed me to receive a check based on the strength or lack thereof of my faith?

T his is where we sometimes fall into confusion. I can't tell you how many times I have heard well meaning people struggle because they don't feel they have enough faith to see God work in their life. Christ said if we have faith as small as a mustard seed we can move mountains. He also said that if we believe we receive what we ask for.

Was Jesus saying our faith gives us power to name our blessings? I don't think so. We must always be careful that we line individual verses of scripture with all other scripture. Remember that Jesus said "apart from me you can do nothing". There is no power in us. The power is in Christ. Jesus also said that "in this world you will have trouble", but thankfully He went on to say "But take heart! I have overcome the world." Our faith is not to be placed in our ability to have faith, but in God and what He will do in our lives through Jesus Christ.

No, I believe that faith, in its truest form, is believing that God has been, is now and will always be God, even when we can't see Him. It is believing that what Christ does through us and for us and with us will be what is best and right for our lives. Faith is knowing that in the end, God works all things together for those who love Him and are called according to His Name. Faith is believing these things, even when the situations and circumstances of life would tempt us to believe otherwise. There will always be times in this fallen world where life throw us curve balls, but faith allows us to trust in Him even still.

Can you say you have FAITH today? Not that you have all that you have asked for. Many times (really most times it seemed) I didn't get the check I wanted. Do you have faith in a God who is right now, even while you can't see Him, working everything out for your ultimate good.

That is faith!

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Miracle Of Belief"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 17, 2008

THE MIRACLE OF BELIEF

My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1co+2:1-5&sr=1

Paul was a scholar and an orator of the first rank; he is not
speaking out of abject humility; but saying that he would veil the
power of God if, when he preached the gospel, he impressed people
with his "excellency of speech." Belief in Jesus is a miracle
produced only by the efficacy of Redemption, not by impressiveness of
speech, not by wooing and winning, but by the sheer unaided power of
God. The creative power of the Redemption comes through the preaching
of the Gospel, but never because of the personality of the preacher.
The real fasting of the preacher is not from food, but rather from
eloquence, from impressiveness and exquisite diction, from everything
that might hinder the gospel of God being presented. The preacher is
there as the representative of God - "as though God did beseech you
by us." He is there to present the Gospel of God. If it is only
because of my preaching that people desire to be better, they will
never get anywhere near Jesus Christ. Anything that flatters me in my
preaching of the Gospel will end in making me a traitor to Jesus; I
prevent the creative power of His Redemption from doing its work.

"I, if I be lifted up . . . , will draw all men unto Me."

Praying with Paul : "Holy and Blameless"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

HOLY AND BLAMELESS

1 Thessalonians 2:5-12
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+2:5-12

Dear Father,

Keep all your preachers from using words of flattery, any cloak of
greed, or from seeking glory for themselves, even though they have
certain rights of support in the gospel. Let them reach out to
people with care and gentleness, like a nurse caring for infants.
Help them to be willing to share not only the gospel but their very
selves.

May your witnesses exhibit holy, blameless, and righteous
behavior, showing the care of a father, even as you do, as they
exhort and encourage and charge people to lead lives worthy of you,
the great wonderful and loving God who calls men into his own
kingdom and glory.

In the holy name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- I'm Perfect! -- Mark 10:19-20

I'm Perfect!

"{But I will answer your question.} You know the commands:
'You must not murder anyone, you must not do the sin of
adultery, you must not steal, you must not lie, you must not
cheat, you must honor (respect) your father and mother ...'"
The man said, "Teacher, I have obeyed all these commands
since I was a boy."

-- Mark 10:19-20 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Here's a guy pretty sure that he has mastered it all ... and he even
began as a child. Oops! This is where his spiritual "heart problems"
begin to show through his veneer of legalistic righteousness. Instead
of keeping the Law to honor God, this fellow was using his law-keeping
as leverage to exalt his status before God. That misses the point. The
pride of law-keeping becomes the false god that shatters the whole
point.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, you are holy and majestic. I know that my attempts to
be holy are going to be met with failure. I commit to work at being a
holy person, but I know that my own efforts, even on my best days, are
going to fall short. I thank you for giving me a righteousness beyond
my abilities, works, and efforts. Thank you for Jesus, whose sacrifice
for me makes me righteous and thank you for the Holy Spirit whose power
works on transforming me into your character and holiness. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Revelation 7:17

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 17, 2008

VERSE:
For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd;
he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe
away every tear from their eyes.
-- Revelation 7:17
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Revelation+7:17

THOUGHT:
What a beautiful picture! The One who died for us will nourish
and refresh us. The One upon whom all eternity hinges will take
time to personally comfort us. No wonder Paul could say that he did
not consider his present sufferings worth comparing to the glory
that would be revealed to us! (Romans 8:18)

PRAYER:
Father God and Sovereign Lord of all Creation, thank you for
your incredible love for me. While I know I don't deserve your
overwhelming and generous grace, I rejoice in it. While I know my
best attempts at honoring you fall short, thank you for promising
to welcome me into your presence, care for me, and comfort me when
I come home to you. Your love, O Lord, is beyond my comprehension
and exhausts my appreciation while filling my heart with wonder and
praise. In Jesus' name I praise you. Amen.
