=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Failure of List-keeping, by Bill Denton

Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and
said, "Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For
they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."

And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress
the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? (Matthew
15:1-3 NASB)

There's something comfortable about reducing Christianity to a list
of do's and don'ts, whether your list comes from mindless
fundamentalism or mindless liberalism: you always know where you
stand, and this helps reduce anxiety. Do's-and-don'ts-ism has the
advantage that you don't need wisdom. You don't have to think
subtly or make hard choices. You don't have to relate personally to
a demanding and loving Lord. (Robert C. Roberts in The Reformed
Journal [Feb. 1987], quoted in Christianity Today, Vol. 31, no. 9.)

If your faith is only the practice of a list of do's and don't's, you
are cheating yourself out of what really counts -- a relationship with
Jesus Christ and the Father, himself. Those who are caught up in that
never-ending, never-succeeding list keeping, are quite often
frustrated, unhappy, and overly critical of themselves and others.

Nobody is suggesting that God has nothing to say about human behavior.
If you read your Bible closely, you'll discover that God is very
concerned that we do some things and that we don't do some others.
Failure to do (or not do, as the case may be) is the simple definition
of sin. Years ago, we heard a lot about sins of "omission" and sins of
"commission." Essentially, they were sins of failing to do what we were
supposed to do, or doing what we ought not to do. So, if you think
anybody is saying God doesn't care about what you do (or don't do)
you're mistaken.

God wants us to obey his will!

It's just that people can get so hung up on lists of do's and don't's
that they miss the whole thing about faith in Jesus Christ. Get into a
conversation about salvation and you may hear what I'm talking about.
When the conversation focuses more on what we must do to be saved
instead of what God has done to save us, you might be hearing evidence
of a list-keeper, not a believer. I know that sounds harsh, but at some
point we must deal with this issue.

For too long, some have put such emphasis on our obedience to what God
wants us to do that they have simply misplaced responsibility for
salvation. To hear some talk, salvation is mostly accomplished by their
obedience. Oh, yeah, sure, there was Jesus, but it's almost as if Jesus
is an afterthought, that he needed our help because he couldn't quite
get it done himself.

Does God want us to obey his will? Yes, he does. That said, faith isn't
about list-keeping: it's about believing in, and trusting, the person
of Jesus Christ. It's about seeing his death on the cross as the
singular forgiveness event of all time. It's about seeing his
resurrection from the dead as the declaration that death has lost its
grip on humankind and life reigns. It's about loving God and responding
to His free-gift of grace and unabashed mercy. It's recognizing no
merit in ourselves, while basking in the merit of our Savior. [Editors
note: See 1 Corinthians 15 and Romans 6 for the Biblical declaration of
these points!] List-keepers will never appreciate these things.

Morning & Evening -- Jonah 4:9 and Psalms 56:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, July 13, 2008

MORNING:

"God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry?"
-- Jonah 4:9

Anger is not always or necessarily sinful, but it has such a tendency
to run wild that whenever it displays itself, we should be quick to
question its character, with this enquiry, "Doest thou well to be
angry?" It may be that we can answer, "YES." Very frequently anger is
the madman's firebrand, but sometimes it is Elijah's fire from heaven.
We do well when we are angry with sin, because of the wrong which it
commits against our good and gracious God; or with ourselves because we
remain so foolish after so much divine instruction; or with others when
the sole cause of anger is the evil which they do. He who is not angry
at transgression becomes a partaker in it. Sin is a loathsome and
hateful thing, and no renewed heart can patiently endure it. God
himself is angry with the wicked every day, and it is written in His
Word, "Ye that love the Lord, hate evil." Far more frequently it is to
be feared that our anger is not commendable or even justifiable, and
then we must answer, "NO." Why should we be fretful with children,
passionate with servants, and wrathful with companions? Is such anger
honourable to our Christian profession, or glorifying to God? Is it not
the old evil heart seeking to gain dominion, and should we not resist
it with all the might of our newborn nature? Many professors give way
to temper as though it were useless to attempt resistance; but let the
believer remember that he must be a conqueror in every point, or else
he cannot be crowned. If we cannot control our tempers, what has grace
done for us? Some one told Mr. Jay that grace was often grafted on a
crab-stump. "Yes," said he, "but the fruit will not be crabs." We must
not make natural infirmity an excuse for sin, but we must fly to the
cross and pray the Lord to crucify our tempers, and renew us in
gentleness and meekness after His own image.

EVENING:

"When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this
I know; for God is for me."
-- Psalms 56:9

It is impossible for any human speech to express the full meaning of
this delightful phrase, "God is for me." He was "for us" before the
worlds were made; he was "for us," or he would not have given his
well-beloved son; he was "for us" when he smote the Only-begotten, and
laid the full weight of his wrath upon him-he was "for us," though he
was against him; he was "for us," when we were ruined in the fall-he
loved us notwithstanding all; he was "for us," when we were rebels
against him, and with a high hand were bidding him defiance; he was
"for us," or he would not have brought us humbly to seek his face. He
has been "for us" in many struggles; we have been summoned to encounter
hosts of dangers; we have been assailed by temptations from without and
within-how could we have remained unharmed to this hour if he had not
been "for us"? He is "for us," with all the infinity of his being; with
all the omnipotence of his love; with all the infallibility of his
wisdom; arrayed in all his divine attributes, he is "for us,"-eternally
and immutably "for us"; "for us" when yon blue skies shall be rolled up
like a worn out vesture; "for us" throughout eternity. And because he
is "for us," the voice of prayer will always ensure his help. "When I
cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies be turned back." This is no
uncertain hope, but a well grounded assurance-"this I know." I will
direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up for the answer, assured
that it will come, and that mine enemies shall be defeated, "for God is
for me." O believer, how happy art thou with the King of kings on thy
side! How safe with such a Protector! How sure thy cause pleaded by
such an Advocate! If God be for thee, who can be against thee?

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Price Of Vision"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 13, 2008

THE PRICE OF VISION

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord.

Isaiah 6:1

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+6:1&sr=1

Our soul's history with God is frequently the history of the "passing
of the hero." Over and over again God has to remove our friends in
order to bring Himself in their place, and that is where we faint and
fail and get discouraged. Take it personally: In the year that the
one who stood to me for all that God was, died - I gave tip
everything? I became ill? I got disheartened? or - I saw the Lord?

My vision of God depends upon the state of my character. Character
determines revelation. Before I can say "I saw also the Lord," there
must be something corresponding to God in my character. Until I am
born again and begin to see the Kingdom of God, I see along the line
of my prejudices only; I need the surgical operation of external
events and an internal purification.

It must be God first, God second, and God third, until the life is
faced steadily with God and no one else is of any account whatever.
"In all the world there is none but thee, my God, there is none but
thee." Keep paying the price. Let God see that you are willing to
live up to the vision.

Praying with Paul : "Living as a New Creation"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

LIVING AS A NEW CREATION

Galatians 6:12-18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+6:12-18

Dear Father, creator of new creations,

Far be it from me to glory except in the cross of Jesus Christ, by
which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. For
neither circumcision avails anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new
creation!

Let your peace and mercy rain down upon all of us who walk by this
rule, upon the Israel of God, called both from Jews and from
non-Jewish people.

Thank you, Father, for calling me to be part of your holy nation.

Let us take no thought for any identifying marks on our bodies,
except the evidences of our suffering for the sake of Jesus.

Help us never to glory in the flesh, or to give ourselves to be
counted for someone else's glorying, except for this.

In the name of Jesus I ask for his grace to be with our Spirits in
this and in all our petitions. Amen.

A Handful of Blessing

Then Jesus held the children in his arms. Jesus put his hands
on them and blessed them.

-- Mark 10:16 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus frequently touched people. So must we. In a world so devoid of
human contact, especially genuinely affectionate and non-sexual
contact, so many people ache to just be touched. Reach out and touch
someone today.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, thank you for the gift of touch. To receive the affectionate
touch of a friend or loved one is precious. To be able to share my
loving touch with another is such a great gift. Help me to use this
gift generously and wisely I pray. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Matthew 7:13-14

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 13, 2008

VERSE:
[Jesus said] "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the
gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many
enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that
leads to life, and only a few find it."
-- Matthew 7:13-14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Matthew+7:13-14

THOUGHT:
Over two decades ago, Juan Carlos Ortiz criticized European and
American evangelists for offering a carrot stick gospel that
focused on the pay off and not lordship of Jesus. Jesus, especially
in Matthew 7, reminds us that grace does not dismiss discipleship
and mercy does not release us from our need to genuinely repent. We
must accept the grace that is given us and truly let Jesus be Lord
of our lives. It's not an either-or proposition, but a both-and
call from God to receive grace and to follow Jesus as Lord.

PRAYER:
Almighty God, holy and awesome in your majesty and might, I know
that I will never be worthy of your grace. I know that my flesh can
be easily lured away from the path of discipleship. So please help
me as I seek to follow the Good Shepherd on your way of salvation.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
