Today's Verse : John 1:4-5

VERSE:
In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light
shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it.
-- John 1:4-5

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=John+1:4-5

THOUGHT:
Life! Not just living, but true, genuine life. Life that gives
us light that darkness cannot steal away. That's why God sent
Jesus! Thankfully that light still shines and all of Satan's horses
and all of Satan's men cannot put their deepest darkest darkness
together again! Hallelujah!

PRAYER:
For every good and perfect gift, for the light I have even in my
moments of deepest darkness, for the hope I have of living with you
in glorious and unapproachable light, I thank you and praise you
with eternal joy, now and forevermore. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Who Me? 1

But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" Exodus 3:11 NIV

Throughout the Bible, men were confronted with a valid quandary. When they had considered who God is, and what God had done, they were forced to then consider who they are in light of who God is. Today, thousands of years later, you and I are faced with the same questions.

God had called out to Moses through the burning bush experience. Moses had such a powerful testimony of God's grace including the time his mother placed him in a basket to hide him from Pharaoh's wrath to the time of hiding because he was a known murderer. We can see, looking at the totality of Moses' life how God had prepared him for service, but in the midst of the wilderness, Moses could only question God's plan. Why would God call an outcast to a position of such honor that required so much leadership ability. Moses had never demonstrated that kind of leadership before.

God often calls the unlikely to tasks of greatness. Please remember that principle. If you will faithfully serve Christ, there will be times in your life when God will ask to do something that will seem to you to be more difficult than what you can handle. If God is the One calling you, however, He will be the One to equip you for these works of greatness. Doing the impossible through you will give God the greatest glory.

Moses was humbled, actually even scared, that God would call him to such an awesome task. He was willing, after God's encouragement, to step forward and do the work God had called him to do. When God calls you, will He find you as willing?

You know how it is -- you say the same words, yet they mean

people soak up your touch; others wipe it off. You might look at
these situations and get discouraged: "Fine! I just won't do

Jesus.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

It IS More Blessed!, by Phil Ware

This was one of those God-timed emails. It arrived at just the right
moment for several of us at the church office. The email was sent from
one our middle school teachers. Her name is Jasa. Several days ago, the
talk among students in her class turned to things they wanted for
Christmas. Jasa tells the rest of the story this way:

One of my students said, "Well, I am getting one free thing that I
need and one free thing that I want."

Another student asked, "What are you talking about?"

Then the student said, "There is this church in town that gives
free stuff to families that don't have money -- you get to put down
one thing you need and another thing that you want."

Then you could see it hit the faces of the other 8th graders … this
student does not live in the same situation that most of them do
... to get 2 things at Christmas is a really big deal for him.

Finally one student said, "That sounds like a pretty cool church!"

I never said anything -- but I sit here at my desk smiling and
thanking God that I am apart of "that cool church"!

Each year we do what we call "The Giving Tree." You probably know the
routine. Folks take paper ornaments from a tree -- in our case, from
two trees -- with gifts needed by unnamed people. Our folks buy and
wrap their gifts, then bring them back with the ornaments so that they
can be shared with the folks who need them. Each ornament has a
clothing item and a fun item so each recipient gets a gift they "need"
and a gift they "want." We have been blessed to help 217 families and
434 individuals this year.

It reminds us of what Jesus said!

That, however, is not the point. The point is that when we read the
email from Jasa, there wasn't a dry eye in the office. Our
administrative staff works very hard to make "The Giving Tree" work.
Many of our members delight in helping in this way. So often, we don't
know exactly the impact these gifts have on others. So to hear a story
about how such a simple thing can make a big difference in the life of
a kid who may have nothing ... well, it reminds us of what Jesus said,
"It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).

With all the commercialization and busyness of the season, let's not
forget the real truth: our richest blessings come from giving ...
especially when given to bless others and to share the good news of
Jesus and his transforming grace.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

What are some gifts you can remember giving that have blessed you
because of the reaction of those who received it?

Come on, go ahead and share your story, all of our hearts need to be
warmed and reminded about the real heart of the season!

You can share your story on my blog:

Morning & Evening -- 1 Thessalonians 4:17 and Acts 16:14

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, December 10, 2007

MORNING:

"So shall we ever be with the Lord."
-- 1 Thessalonians 4:17

Even the sweetest visits from Christ, how short they are-and how
transitory! One moment our eyes see him, and we rejoice with joy
unspeakable and full of glory, but again a little time and we do not
see him, for our beloved withdraws himself from us; like a roe or a
young hart he leaps over the mountains of division; he is gone to the
land of spices, and feeds no more among the lilies.

"If to-day he deigns to bless us
With a sense of pardoned sin,
He to-morrow may distress us,
Make us feel the plague within."

Oh, how sweet the prospect of the time when we shall not behold him at
a distance, but see him face to face: when he shall not be as a
wayfaring man tarrying but for a night, but shall eternally enfold us
in the bosom of his glory. We shall not see him for a little season,
but

"Millions of years our wondering eyes,
Shall o'er our Saviour's beauties rove;
And myriad ages we'll adore,
The wonders of his love."

In heaven there shall be no interruptions from care or sin; no weeping
shall dim our eyes; no earthly business shall distract our happy
thoughts; we shall have nothing to hinder us from gazing for ever on
the Sun of Righteousness with unwearied eyes. Oh, if it be so sweet to
see him now and then, how sweet to gaze on that blessed face for aye,
and never have a cloud rolling between, and never have to turn one's
eyes away to look on a world of weariness and woe! Blest day, when wilt
thou dawn? Rise, O unsetting sun! The joys of sense may leave us as
soon as they will, for this shall make glorious amends. If to die is
but to enter into uninterrupted communion with Jesus, then death is
indeed gain, and the black drop is swallowed up in a sea of victory.

EVENING:

"Whose heart the Lord opened."
-- Acts 16:14

In Lydia's conversion there are many points of interest. It was brought
about by providential circumstances. She was a seller of purple, of the
city of Thyatira, but just at the right time for hearing Paul we find
her at Philippi; providence, which is the handmaid of grace, led her to
the right spot. Again, grace was preparing her soul for the
blessing-grace preparing for grace. She did not know the Saviour, but
as a Jewess, she knew many truths which were excellent stepping-stones
to a knowledge of Jesus. Her conversion took place in the use of the
means. On the Sabbath she went when prayer was wont to be made, and
there prayer was heard. Never neglect the means of grace; God may bless
us when we are not in his house, but we have the greater reason to hope
that he will when we are in communion with his saints. Observe the
words, "Whose heart the Lord opened." She did not open her own heart.
Her prayers did not do it; Paul did not do it. The Lord himself must
open the heart, to receive the things which make for our peace. He
alone can put the key into the hole of the door and open it, and get
admittance for himself. He is the heart's master as he is the heart's
maker. The first outward evidence of the opened heart was obedience. As
soon as Lydia had believed in Jesus, she was baptized. It is a sweet
sign of a humble and broken heart, when the child of God is willing to
obey a command which is not essential to his salvation, which is not
forced upon him by a selfish fear of condemnation, but is a simple act
of obedience and of communion with his Master. The next evidence was
love, manifesting itself in acts of grateful kindness to the apostles.
Love to the saints has ever been a mark of the true convert. Those who
do nothing for Christ or his church, give but sorry evidence of an
"opened" heart. Lord, evermore give me an opened heart.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Offering Of The Natural"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 10, 2007

THE OFFERING OF THE NATURAL

Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other
by a freewoman.

Galatians 4:22

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ga+4:22&sr=1

Paul is not dealing with sin in this chapter of Galatians, but with
the relation of the natural to the spiritual. The natural must be
turned into the spiritual by sacrifice, otherwise a tremendous
divorce will be produced in the actual life. Why should God ordain
the natural to be sacrificed? God did not. It is not God's order, but
His permissive will. God's order was that the natural should be
transformed into the spiritual by obedience; it is sin that made it
necessary for the natural to be sacrificed.

Abraham had to offer up Ishmael before he offered up Isaac. Some of
us are trying to offer up spiritual sacrifices to God before we have
sacrificed the natural. The only way in which we can offer a
spiritual sacrifice to God is by presenting our bodies a living
sacrifice. Sanctification means more than deliverance from sin, it
means the deliberate commitment of myself whom God has saved to God,
and that I do not care what it costs.

If we do not sacrifice the natural to the spiritual, the natural life
will mock at the life of the Son of God in us and produce a continual
swither. This is always the result of an undisciplined spiritual
nature. We go wrong because we stubbornly refuse to discipline
ourselves, physically, morally or mentally. "I wasn't disciplined
when I was a child." You must discipline yourself now. If you do not,
you will ruin the whole of your personal life for God.

God is not with our natural life while we pamper it; but when we put
it out in the desert and resolutely keep it under, then God will be
with it; and He will open up wells and oases, and fulfill all His
promises for the natural.

RECONCILED THROUGH CHRIST

Colossians 1:15-20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+1:15-20

Dear Father,

We are Christ's church and he is head over us, head over his body.
He is the beginning, the first-born of creation and the first-born
from the dead, that in everything he might have the pre-eminence.

How gracious you were and are in your good will toward us that
your very fullness should dwell in him and that through him all
things should be reconciled to you, things on heaven and things on
earth.

Thank you for making peace with us and all your creation by the
blood of your Son's cross.

Let us always glory in it and in him!

Thank you, dear God, for the wonderful salvation you have
provided. In the name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

WJD! -- The Usual Place -- Luke 22:39-46

The Usual Place

Jesus left the city (Jerusalem) and went to the Mount of
Olives. His followers went with him. (Jesus went there
often.) Jesus said to his followers, "Pray for strength
against temptation." Then Jesus went about 50 steps away from
them. He kneeled down and prayed, "Father, if it is what you
want, then let me not have this cup {of suffering}. But do
what you want, not what I want." Then an angel from heaven
appeared. The angel was sent to help Jesus. Jesus was full of
pain; he struggled hard in prayer. Sweat dripped from his
face like he was bleeding. When Jesus finished praying, he
went to his followers. They were asleep. (Their sadness had
made them very tired.) Jesus said to them, "Why are you
sleeping? Get up and pray for strength against temptation."

-- Luke 22:39-46 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus warns his disciples again about the temptation that is about to
engulf them. He does it in "the usual place." This was his place of
prayer. Everything about this event is surrealistic, bizarre, and
horrifying except one: this was his place of prayer. He had walked with
God his entire ministry. Prayer had been his connecting link with his
Father in heaven. It was the place where he re-centered his sense of
ministry, where he gained strength, where he rejoiced, and where he
spoke honestly of his own struggles. So now, at the crucial moment in
his life, he is prepared to face this awful test. For Jesus,
surrendering to God in prayer wasn't some last minute thing used to
dodge this difficult trial. It was an extended conversation, a
continuing walk with the Father to whom he has repeatedly submitted his
will. Jesus could ask that the Father's will would be done because he
had asked it so often before in "the usual place." Do you have a time
carved out in your day where you surrender your will to the Father? Do
you have "the usual place" where you offer your heart to God? It can be
at your computer as you take time each day to draw close to the Father
and offer him your heart. It can be in the quiet of the morning ... or
the evening ... or even at noon. The important thing is that we have
"the usual place" where we meet God and say, "Father ... I want your
will, not mine." When we do, we can be sure he hears us, sends his
angels to attend to us, and works in our lives to ultimately bring us
to his glory.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, thank you for meeting me in "the usual place." I submit my will
and my life to you, trusting in your gracious promises to me and your
glorious future for me. Please give me the courage to follow where you
lead me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
